Nice!!! There's so little information on HDR PQ. My R8 shoots both. So far it seems like HDR PQ does better when I need to protect my shadows and LOG if I need to protect my highlights. I'm going to run some more tests and make a vid, but that's what I've noticed so far. I'm doing PQ at iso 200 and exposing for shadows / LOG at iso 800 and exposing for the highlights... That's given me the best results and dynamic range.
Probably.. You were using a saturated PP while shooting in HDR PQ mode on the other cameras.Yes. While shootning in HDR PQ you should still pick a Canon Picture Profile. That's what all log shooters are dismissing. And my choice is faithful because it has true colors(hence the name). Drop the saturation/contrast/sharpness if you wish so. And you have a killer 10 bit video in st2084 gamut. Expose to protect the highlights and recover the shadows at post.. You will see it is even better than clog in many scenarios. Both R50 and R10 are super at HDR PQ but you should expose PQ totally different than Clog3 too.
Finally somebody is talking about HDR PQ on Canon. I shot this on my R6MK2 and R5 when I don't have an ND and want to use 200 ISO with very dynamic scenes. I do enable Highlight Tone Priority D+ otherwise ZEBRAs dont work on the screen with these 2 bodies. I use it on TV mode so shutter priority with Auto ISO and about 1 stop over exposed. But yes this doesn't protect the highlights as well as CLOG3 but works fine on the run. I convert to PRORES with ffmpeg and this way I can edit on Davinci Resolve Free version.

I think maybe because the ISO that caused HDR PQ so worse in R7. Clog has a minimum ISO of 800 while HDR PQ has 100, so Clog can preserve more detail in low light. Set highlight tone priority to D+2 will make the minimum ISO to be 200 and can therefore preserve more details for highlight areas.
That is quite possible, I don’t have either of the cameras anymore at this point. Once canon starts to release better aps-c lenses I’ll be back on the system
So it seems the HDRPQ is quite a bit better on the R50. It seems like it also survives conversion to rec709 There are a few more hotspots on the HDRPQ compared to the CLOG3. I'm not really ready to draw a conclusion but it seems the R50 could be the most affordable 10 bit 422 solution that can get near or over 12 stops of DR. I think in General HDR does have hotspots as it is meant for HDR display.
If you are a professional who cares about that kind of stuff, the R7 is still the best cheap professional option because of clog3. If you are a beginner or on a crazy low budget I think the fact the R50 can do decent 10bit is impressive but yeah like you noted isn’t perfect

does r10 hdr pq have same results as the r50? the R50 look way better, I really hope it's the same because sometimes my hdr pq clips don't look that good
It’s a great option, however be careful it has been discontinued due to Viltrox making the adapter without permission from Canon, so it’s possible on any firmware update that comes out for the cameras that they disable the use of the adapter electronically

Appreciate your advice as I'm deciding if it's worth the upgrade from M50 (with 32mm f1.4 lens)

Thank you! I would get an R7 in that situation, reason being it’s easier to match with clog3 on the R7 and R6. The R50 works great when it’s your only camera or running multiple R50’s
The electronic stabilization is “ok” on the R50. Since the R7 has IBIS it’s a bit better. If you need stabilization on the R50 I highly recommend getting lenses with stabilization built in vs using digital image stabilization
What about stabilization? I’m really about to decide on buying an r50 but the stabilization on r7 with ibis is outstanding and best bang for the buck compared to Sony, Bkackmagic, etc… I suppose.

It all depends on the lenses you want to own. The overall image is actually slightly better on the R7 but if you have full frame glass already the R6 is great
@@ReachFilms i have rf 35, 50, 85 at the moment (those cheaper versions 1.8-2.0) but no body.. so still thinking between R8 and R6mII… and yea no native glass for R7 i mean like 1.4 etc… or at least rf22mm 2.0 even this they still doesnt make 🤦🏻♂️ (when somebody dont want to use any adapter for example…)

C-log is not as good as HDR-PQ, which is why when I upgraded my equipment for shooting real estate, I chose the R50 and the Nisi 9mm f/2.8 RF lens which is a 13.5mm full frame equivalent. This has been an amazing combo for my business. There is absolutely no need to waste thousands more on unnecessary equipment. I spent under $1k for this set up and it paid for itself after just 2 shoots! I agree with Ken Rockwell, the R50 is every bit as good as a full frame at a third of the cost. And when you shoot in 4k @30fps, slow it down to 24fps for buttery smooth video, looks amazing for real estate.
none of this is HDR, you've uploaded in SDR so any HDR would be tone-mapped to the smaller colour space, making this video completely pointless. Imagine testing different colour modes then uploading the footage in black and white and comparing them, that's what you have done here.
yes that is true, however for anyone who uses the camera for video like I do in this video, needing a battery grip isnt really needed as I just use Power Delivery devices

One thing to remember is I shot at iso 800 on both cameras tho, so regardless the R50 performed better at 800

Just a quick question, what about the external flashes ? How is the process? The only way is with adapter?
If you are using older flashes you may need the adapter, newer devices should work without one
Im thinking of grabbing a Viltrox speed booster to pair with this camera and all my EF lenses

how do you colour grade the HDR PQ footage? is it the same as using a default picture profile

It all has to be done in post. The only way to monitor it on consumer/prosumer canon cameras is to buy an external monitor with those capabilities

The r50 doesn’t have ibis, the r7 has decent ibis but it isn’t game changing, it’s on par with Sony, not quite as good as lumix
And because it is soo light you can get a gimbal on a really good price. And stabilization done.

Canon DO NOT produce any battery grip for the R7. Only third party do and then its not the original type batteries but stupid 18650 batteries....
