Leon was only 22 in this clip. He had an enormous influence on music. Renaissance man on the piano. He could play a multitude of genres, and excelled at every one. Regretting that I only saw him once, near the end of his career. His music has given me a lot of joy.
When Leon was in his 20s and 30s he was very handsome...and had a presense ...a musician's musician...who let his fellow musicians get the accolades..but he knew who he was..

And Gary Busey. Graduating class of Will Rogers High School in 1959. By the way my brother was in that class too. We lived on the same street as the Buseys.
And Mr. Elvin Bishop I believe was there. It's really a very very cool Art Deco high school built when Tulsa was "Oil Capital of the World". Great talent and architecture named after a great Oklahoman!

In '71, Leon sat in to play piano on a particular studio cut, asked to do so by George Harrison. The song, already mostly together, played, and as it did, Leon just sat, staring ahead of him. 'What's he doing?' some of the band wanted to know. Tryin' to hear it, or some such, he answered after the three minutes. On the second play-through, Leon laid his part down, full and whole. The cut? The evergreen, 'Day After Day', by Badfinger.
Wow, didn't know that LR added so much to that song then. The piano nails the sweetness of the tune! Badfinger was certainly amazing and would have done so much. Stan Polley... another example of the usual parasites preying on talent.
Was listening to that in 64, "my Mom" watched it on TV, loved his music and followed him for many years. Now I'm sixty nine and still love listening to him on my collection of CD"s. You can tell it's him by his style and voice.
I'm 79......and saw him live in up-state NY in the mid 90's. Dude was always cool. In 1964 when he played this I was still in the Army, just back from Korea. We danced to this in the dives outside Ft Benning GA. Great memories.

The scope of talent on this show is enormous - from the house band, the Shindogs, the legendary Blossoms, as the female back-up vocals, and of course, the terrific dancing, with choreography by Mr. Dave Winters, assisted by Toni Basil, and amongst the dancers, was their friend, and a fixture in Elvis movies, as well as one of Dave Letterman's best guests (and she also did Star Trek, TOS, as 'Roberta Lincoln), the one and only, Ms. TerrI Garr (who's visible behind Mr. Russell, beginning at 1.33 ''til she and the others Pony off-camera, stage left, at). R.I.P, Mr. Russell, and thanks for the music.
There are a lot of good musician/entertainers, but only a few stand alone because of their talent, their commitment and their unique sound. Leon Russel's songs draw you in like few do. His 60 year career speaks to that. Simply irreplaceable. Thank you, Mr. Russel, for all of the mellow.

Been a huge fan of Leon Russell since the late 60's and had the pleasure of seeing him and his wife in '77 at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. Seating capacity was 3000 at that time so virtually every seat was a good seat.
I've seen Leon Russell live 4 times. First time was In Riverside CA at Raincross Square around 1980 or '81. Acouple of years later as an opening act for Hank Williams Jr at Pacific Amphitheatre. Then saw him twice in Nevada City, CA. One time was for a fund raiser for the land trust and then at a small club in town. Loved Leon and his music. So under appreciated.
Lucky me. Got into Leon in 1972. Did a lot of orange sunshine and purple microdot that year. Tremendous talent and HUGE part of The Sixties as well as the Sixties, as we see here from 1964,

I saw him a year before he died. He used a scooter to get to the piano. “Uh-oh,” I thought to myself, “…I should have seen him 40 years ago.” However he plunked down on that bench and gave an amazing, looong show and I’m sure glad I went. I must have 6 or 7 of his albums

I hasten to add that Leon Russell was 22 when this was recorded. I saw him in Florida with the "Shelter People" in the middle 70s in one of the great rock venues: a Jai-alai fronton (no dulling reverb, comforable seats, REALLY great bass bouncing off a brick wall). He wrote great songs, played guitar and piano and kept the show moving. Joe Cocker was a great performer, but he really owes his career to Leon's creation of a stage show for him. At the time, people in the rest of the world looked at America and thought "How do they come up with these talents?"
Just realized this was my 14th birthday. Remember this like it was yesterday. Always loved piano. Seeing Leon cinched it for me. Bought his albums the the years and saw numerous live shows. Was looking to see where he might be playing again soon, when passed away. Just a few days before my birthday. Have always loved his talent and creativity. I have his library and consider myself as his biggest fan.
That was so cool!. My wife and I saw Leon over the years. The last time we saw him was the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton Fl shortly before he passed. What a great musician and entertainer. Thanks for the video.
Will wonders never cease! Seriously, the man was a wonder, and I always thought he was born with the shades and the beard. Great version of a Chuck Berry hit, truly made it his! I guess there's a lot of electrical magic going on between the finished sound and the man at the keys, but it sounds good. Truly an underrated musician, he made some fine music. Yup, I was lucky enough to see him with mad dog and Englishmem! I was 17 yrs young, I am now 70 yrs young!! He was phenomenal 😊.. swing auditorium in San Bernardino!! Saw Hendrix also... Those were the days my friend , hoping they never end!!! Much love to all, that is what music 🎵 does, brings love and happiness!! We remember the good times in our lives!!!
I was 8 years old but remember shindig very well and watched it everyday so no doubt I saw this. There was also where the action is and hullabaloo. There was one other one I can't remember. For some reason the older I get the more vivid my childhood memories are.

Most people only know Leon from his later years in music. Born, Claude Russell Bridges, in Lawton, Oklahoma (Ft. Sill) in 1942, Leon was a studio musician in the 1960s with the famous 1960s-1970s L.A. studio group, (active 1956-2016) The Wrecking Crew. He played on albums with everyone from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles & The Rolling Stones, Glen Campbell to The Beach Boys. He died on November 13,2016 in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, near Nashville. R.I.P. Brother.

Saw him and BB King in 72at the SD sports area. A great musician, have always loved his music 🎵! He must have had a bad day cause he was yelling at the audience to shut the f__k up... Which really was a trip!! Great talent but an ego the size of Texas!!

I believe you but it seems out of place for his personality how laid-back he was with his singing playing when he got older with the long hair and the long beard. I worked in the music business from 1966 to 1969 with groups and people now in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and some who didn't make it into the Hall but had hits saw some of that first hand. Way more nice down to earth people then assholes at least.

one of his last gigs before he died was at the Hwy 120 tavern in Marietta, GA....it was promoted on a local station and the crowd was excellent.

Most people only know Leon from his later years in music. Born, Claude Russell Bridges, in Lawton, Oklahoma (Ft. Sill) in 1942, Leon was a studio musician in the 1960s with the famous 1960s-1970s L.A. studio group, (active 1956-2016) The Wrecking Crew. He played on albums with everyone from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles & The Rolling Stones, Glen Campbell to The Beach Boys. He died on November 13,2016 in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, near Nashville. R.I.P. Brother.

This is a lost jem. I graduated HS in 1964 watched Shindig, may have seen this but don't remember so long ago. Just to see how Leon looked back then is kinda freaky. Like seeing a completely different person. He rocks so easily and sounds so good. Thanks for posting this.
Saw him and BB King in 72at the SD sports area. A great musician, have always loved his music 🎵! He must have had a bad day cause he was yelling at the audience to shut the f__k up... Which really was a trip!! Great talent but an ego the size of Texas!!

I believe you but it seems out of place for his personality how laid-back he was with his singing playing when he got older with the long hair and the long beard. I worked in the music business from 1966 to 1969 with groups and people now in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and some who didn't make it into the Hall but had hits saw some of that first hand. Way more nice down to earth people then assholes at least.
