- Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, United States, Russell began playing piano at the age of four. He attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Also at Will Rogers High School were Anita Bryant, who was one year older, and in the same 1959 class, David Gates. Russell and Gates played and recorded together as the Fencement. A few years younger, also at Will Rogers, was Elvin Bishop. At this time Russell was already performing at Tulsa nightclubs. After moving to Los Angeles, he became a session musician, working as a pianist on the recordings of many notable musical artists from the 1960s. By the late 1960s, Russell diversified, becoming successful as an arranger[4] and songwriter. As a musician, he worked his way up from gigs as a sideman to well-known performers. By 1970, he had graduated to solo recording artist, although he never ended his previous roles within the music industry. After performing country music under the name Hank Wilson in the 1970s and 1980s, Russell had largely faded into obscurity. He re-emerged in 2010 when Elton John called on him to record an album that became The Union. The album brought renewed popularity to Russell who has since released a solo album and toured around the world.
Russell was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011. In June, 2011, Leon Russell was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

I had to hear it to believe this was Leon. This clip is a treasure
Ikr
I never saw him with short hair. He cleans up nicely !!! But I prefer the hippy look !!!
Same here!!
IKR
@@sheilaisaacs981 I concur?
Wow! I'd never seen Leon Russell with short hair. I got to see Leon one time in his later years. This guy was a Rock and Roll Institution.
When Leon was in his 20s and 30s he was very handsome...and had a presense ...a musician's musician...who let his fellow musicians get the accolades..but he knew who he was..
Absolutely.@@zorkwork3841
The Leon Russell Museum in Tulsa is worth the trip
Leon was only 22 in this clip. He had an enormous influence on music. Renaissance man on the piano. He could play a multitude of genres, and excelled at every one.
Regretting that I only saw him once, near the end of his career. His music has given me a lot of joy.
Leon also wrote a lot of really great songs. He was a real artist.
Me too. He died a few months after I saw him.
Saw him at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. He was great. I think it was the 90's.
@@MrBsbotto He even wrote hit pop tunes for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. The man could do just about anything musically.
At this point in Leon's career he was working with the Wrecking Crew studio band full time. He played on a lot of stuff.
I never realized he was playing so early! He really grew up with Rock and Roll.
He was performing in clubs at age 14.
Same here! I was shocked to realize that he was who did that! And *I* grew up with rock and roll! That was definitely his voice and piano style, though, no mistaking that.
He produced Gary Lewis and the Playboys
@@srvntlillyOriginal was written and performed by Chuck Berry
@@PAKiller1watch video of Ron Hicklin, he sang on all of GL playboys hits
The mere though of Leon Russell and Anita Bryant in the same HS makes my brain go in impossible directions
Not to mention David Gates. There's a nice RUclips video of Gates chatting with fans from a few years back. And a great documentary about Bread. Their pianist played the piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" before he joined Bread.
And Gary Busey. Graduating class of Will Rogers High School in 1959. By the way my brother was in that class too. We lived on the same street as the Buseys.
And Mr. Elvin Bishop I believe was there. It's really a very very cool Art Deco high school built when Tulsa was "Oil Capital of the World". Great talent and architecture named after a great Oklahoman!
@@josephhansard7469 , Amazing. I didn’t know that. The Busey’s lived a few houses down the street from us. David Gates was one of my brother’s friends. I vaguely remember meeting Anita Bryant way back then, I was 5. I remember thinking she was very beautiful and had an unmistakable presence.
@@randyjordan5521 That would be Larry Knechtel. He was also a member of The Wrecking Crew and played on tons of hits in the 60's. Glen Campbell was a member too.
RIP Leon Russell (April 2, 1942 - November 13, 2016), aged 74
You will be remembered as a legend.
In '71, Leon sat in to play piano on a particular studio cut, asked to do so by George Harrison. The song, already mostly together, played, and as it did, Leon just sat, staring ahead of him. 'What's he doing?' some of the band wanted to know. Tryin' to hear it, or some such, he answered after the three minutes. On the second play-through, Leon laid his part down, full and whole. The cut? The evergreen, 'Day After Day', by Badfinger.
Wow, didn't know that LR added so much to that song then. The piano nails the sweetness of the tune!
Badfinger was certainly amazing and would have done so much. Stan Polley... another example of the usual parasites preying on talent.
Leon had something mystical and magical right through his eyes
"The Master of Space & Time"!
@@davidgibbs381 absolutely🪄✨️
The line in Song for You where he says “I love you in a place where there’s no space and time” just proves Leon was a true mystic and visionary.
As a member of “The Wrecking Crew”, I wonder how many records his badass piano playing was on by this point!
What instrument(s) did you play as a Wrecking Crew Member?
@@zorkwork3841 oh, poorly worded sentence- sorry! Maybe clearer if i started it: when he was a member…
That's Ok...I transpose words all the time@@imlistening1137

Leon was a multi talented songwriter, pianist, arranger, singer, producer and band leader extraordinaire ❤
Thank you for posting this amazing performance by Leon Russell. He always has been a favourite, but never knew about this little nugget of sublime.
I knew Leon was a mentor for many upcoming artists, but I had never seen this Gem
Thank goodness for great musicians like Leon Russell. What a treasure. Much love to you brother, wherever your playing.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen him without a beard. More importantly, he sounds great!
wich is strange since he has no microphone. Also strange waves of screeming audience. Still great Leon.
He was Incredible. God Bless You Leon Russell. 🙏
Was listening to that in 64, "my Mom" watched it on TV, loved his music and followed him for many years. Now I'm sixty nine and still love listening to him on my collection of CD"s. You can tell it's him by his style and voice.
i am 69 too and love the old music ❤
Exactly. There's no mistaking that. What a legend.
I like Leon Russell too Mark!
I'm 79......and saw him live in up-state NY in the mid 90's. Dude was always cool. In 1964 when he played this I was still in the Army, just back from Korea. We danced to this in the dives outside Ft Benning GA. Great memories.
@@sunsioux444 Right with ya there. I remember watching Shindig after school every day. It was that or Where The Action Is. Oh man oh man.
Always liked Leon’s music. I guess this is why. Don’t remember seeing it back then.
Another one of those things on here that you can hardly believe ever happened. :)
I remember watching it as a child. My older brother actually danced on that show.
Hi Charlotte...
This is the first time I've seen/heard this, and I must say that I found it a little difficult to relate to this being Leon Russell.
.
Russel was the band leader behind Joe Cocker during the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.
One of my favorite albums...the cover is worn and dog-eared after 50 years.
Yup, I was lucky enough to see him with mad dog and Englishmem! I was 17 yrs young, I am now 70 yrs young!! He was phenomenal 😊.. swing auditorium in San Bernardino!! Saw Hendrix also... Those were the days my friend , hoping they never end!!! Much love to all, that is what music 🎵 does, brings love and happiness!! We remember the good times in our lives!!!
Maybe the most underrated musician EVER
Will O' the Wisp....one of my all time favs 🎶🎶💕
The scope of talent on this show is enormous - from the house band, the Shindogs, the legendary Blossoms, as the female back-up vocals, and of course, the terrific dancing, with choreography by Mr. Dave Winters, assisted by Toni Basil, and amongst the dancers, was their friend, and a fixture in Elvis movies, as well as one of Dave Letterman's best guests (and she also did Star Trek, TOS, as 'Roberta Lincoln), the one and only, Ms. TerrI Garr (who's visible behind Mr. Russell, beginning at 1.33 ''til she and the others Pony off-camera, stage left, at).
R.I.P, Mr. Russell, and thanks for the music.
Don't forget The Righteous Brothers.
You can see Aretha Franklin and Billy Preston as unknowns.
And Glenn Campbell and Delaney Bramlett!
Shindogs were Delaney Bramlett, James Burton, Joey Cooper and Chuck Blackwell
Terri Garr : )
I was lucky to see that man on stage. Thanks for the music!
ME ALSO
HE AND EDGAR WINTER
Wow ..Leon was great. Long live Mad dogs and Eglishmen
A most beautiful gentleman, my hero, and a star in heaven.
That far back he had aspirations of being a solo artist. He was in the wrecking crew at this time.
Cool as a cucumber as always.
Been a huge fan of Leon Russell since the late 60's and had the pleasure of seeing him and his wife in '77 at the Universal Amphitheater in LA. Seating capacity was 3000 at that time so virtually every seat was a good seat.
Wow, I saw him just before he passed.
This is a real gem. He was my fav back in the day😘
I’ve never seen Leon without that big beard…this is awesome. Imagine Leon the ladies man 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I hasten to add that Leon Russell was 22 when this was recorded. I saw him in Florida with the "Shelter People" in the middle 70s in one of the great rock venues: a Jai-alai fronton (no dulling reverb, comforable seats, REALLY great bass bouncing off a brick wall). He wrote great songs, played guitar and piano and kept the show moving. Joe Cocker was a great performer, but he really owes his career to Leon's creation of a stage show for him. At the time, people in the rest of the world looked at America and thought "How do they come up with these talents?"
Part of the greatest band ever in rock and roll. That many never even heard of. The wrecking crew.
Chuck Berry truly left his mark to be a legend.
I was lucky enought to see Leon in Los Angeles. His lead-in warm -up was a guy named Elton John.
Leon is absolutely the best musician!❤️💕
He can play the piano effortlessly and sing any song 🎵 ❤️💕
I did wonder sometimes who was Leon Russell before Joe Cocker. Man, what a quiff!
I remember Shindig,
Damn, I'm old!!
This is great! Gave me a big surprise and a bigger grin. Thank you to the poster and to Leon.
Can’t mistake that voice and piano style
I WATCHED SHINDIG EVERY WEEK WITH MY GUITAR IN HAND / WHAT A BAND!
Even back then he did his own version of songs he covered. I have always liked his version of "Jumpmg Jack Flash" the best.
Will wonders never cease! Seriously, the man was a wonder, and I always thought he was born with the shades and the beard. Great version of a Chuck Berry hit, truly made it his! I guess there's a lot of electrical magic going on between the finished sound and the man at the keys, but it sounds good. Truly an underrated musician, he made some fine music. 'Song for You' was sweet, low, and powerful! And even my beatnik old Pop couldn't get enough of High Wire'. R.I.P. Leon Russell...
saw leon many times in concert early 70s . one of the greatest!
Ah yes Shindig and another Great Show Hullabaloo. They really put on some great Artists. Leon Russell the RIGHTEOUS Brothers and a Whole Slew of Groups in the early 60's Loved watching the shows back in the day!👍👍
Just realized this was my 14th birthday. Remember this like it was yesterday. Always loved piano. Seeing Leon cinched it for me. Bought his albums the the years and saw numerous live shows. Was looking to see where he might be playing again soon, when passed away. Just a few days before my birthday. Have always loved his talent and creativity. I have his library and consider myself as his biggest fan.
if he has an auto-biography out, you should get it. i've heard just a few things over the years...what a talent!
You have his library. I'm so jealous.
Wow...exactly the same here!
mine as well 2 days earlier..
Amazing to see Leon at such an early age 👍👍🤩❤️❤️
Wow! He certainly did come a long, long way! RIP, Leon.
That was so cool!. My wife and I saw Leon over the years. The last time we saw him was the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton Fl shortly before he passed. What a great musician and entertainer. Thanks for the video.
Watched Shindig as a preteen , didn’t remember him looking so “ clean cut, or Willie or Waylon . What a change the sixties and seventies created . 😎👍
one of his last gigs before he died was at the Hwy 120 tavern in Marietta, GA....it was promoted on a local station and the crowd was excellent.
This is gold. A million thanks for posting. I had to listen twice.
I saw him a year before he died. He used a scooter to get to the piano. “Uh-oh,” I thought to myself, “…I should have seen him 40 years ago.” However he plunked down on that bench and gave an amazing, looong show and I’m sure glad I went. I must have 6 or 7 of his albums
Being from Oklahoma I got to see Leon before he got stupid famous hangin out with Clapton and JJ Cale and all the other Rock legends. My favorite song is Back to the Island. He’s is by far my favorite piano playing rockstar.
One Way back to the island and out in the woods........
Howdy Oklahoma!
@@IrishD55 Howdy! 🤠
I was invited to a party in Oklahoma back in 75 and we arrived and the place was jumping, I saw some pics on the walls of this guy and ask who and why ...my new freind from Tulsa said it was Leon Russell's house so I went looking for him, my bud says if you're looking for him he's not here..! I guess someone close to Russell threw the blowout in his absence.... or was it 74?? Those days are sort of a blur, dropping acid was pretty much normal thing among some of us...
Awesome! Had to close my eyes, oh ya I know that voice !
I want to say that Leon Russell was married to Merry Clayton (GREAT backing vocal on "Gimme Shelter").
Only one of that man, a true musical genius!❤❤❤
Always will be one of my Favorites God Bless You LEON RuSSELL
Great to see early Leon Russell! And the piped in audience too!
I never before seen a clip of Leon Russell early in his career.
Lucky me. Got into Leon in 1972. Did a lot of orange sunshine and purple microdot that year. Tremendous talent and HUGE part of The Sixties as well as the Sixties, as we see here from 1964,
Historically wonderful and informative
Leon was pretty cool, love his music, thank you for sharing.
I am besotted by this man...
Yay Leon!
Leon was a star from day one!
He was a cutie! Didn't look like that by 1970. 🎉
OMG That was then and a few years later, hair down his back 'Feelin Alright"...Leon the timeless songwriter
Wow ! Never seen this before ! Sharing ❤❤
This is a lost jem. I graduated HS in 1964 watched Shindig, may have seen this but don't remember so long ago. Just to see how Leon looked back then is kinda freaky. Like seeing a completely different person. He rocks so easily and sounds so good. Thanks for posting this.
Saw him and BB King in 72at the SD sports area. A great musician, have always loved his music 🎵! He must have had a bad day cause he was yelling at the audience to shut the f__k up... Which really was a trip!! Great talent but an ego the size of Texas!!
@@jerrysalazar8853 I didn't know that about him. I believe you but it seems out of place for his personality how laid-back he was with his singing playing when he got older with the long hair and the long beard. I worked in the music business from 1966 to 1969 with groups and people now in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame and some who didn't make it into the Hall but had hits saw some of that first hand. Way more nice down to earth people then assholes at least.
That fantastic voice only got better with age
I didn't know Leon was ever this young lol I was 6 in 64
Leon was phenomenal. This was like chewing gum walking down the street ❤
LOVE LOVE LOVE LEON.......FOREVER AND FOREVER
Wow...never seen this footage...thanks for sharing this. I didn't think it was Leon until I heard him sing, that unmistakable voice. He is definitely channeling Jerry Lee Lewis here in sound and looks...now understand that JLL had to be a big influence on Leon as he began his career. Have been a huge Leon fan all my life, only saw him live once in a 200 seat saloon in Santa Ana, CA in the mid 1980's.
I really like Leon Russell, he can sing and play. I was just introduced to him by Gary Busey on UTUBE
Are you saying you didn't know who Leon was?
You had to have heard of Hank Wilson.
Are you saying that Gary Busey is still in control of one or more of his faculties?
Has me stunned and scratchin' my head. Great vintage surprise, thank you.
Wow, some handsome look n man! Thank you so much for posting this incredible video. You know here it almost seems like he is not even try n too hard and yet he just smokes this song! What an amazing talent. I really miss brother Leon so very much.
I was 8 years old but remember shindig very well and watched it everyday so no doubt I saw this. There was also where the action is and hullabaloo. There was one other one I can't remember. For some reason the older I get the more vivid my childhood memories are.
maybe American Bandstand?
Lloyd Thaxton. Don't remember the show, really, just the name!
Unmistakable Leon!!
Wow! This is amazing! I love Leon Russell's music. Hes been a favorite for decades.
Amazingly wonderful ❤. Love Leon’s Album Carnival.
Me too! I got to see him live touring for that album!
OMG, I have never seen him anywhere near this age.
It's great seeing him so young and "clean". Music on TV then was all lip synched. NO MICROPHONES.
There is a great video of Leon and JJ Cale in session at his Paradise Studio in 1979. They were pals from their younger days in Oklahoma. It's worth the watch.
I've seen that. It's incredible!
Wow. I would have never guessed it!
What an amazing career!
Although I'm young enough to have been Mr. Russell's son, I grew up listening to his most popular songs and 1960s songs featuring his session work. But this video blew my mind. I had no idea that he performed on television prior to his collaboration with Joe Cocker.
Mr. Russell and I lived in the same city at the time of his death, and the first of two funerals for him was held at a church a few miles from my home. I wanted to attend that funeral but couldn't get to it before it ended.
RIP Leon Russell (1942-2016)
Never seen him this young. His soulful voice and long white hair later on defined him to me. As good as chuck berry's version.
Wow, so young here! Never heard or saw this until now. Now, I get what all the hype over Leon Russell was about! 🎉😊
gosh... that boy is pretty good
.. ❤ love Leon Russell 😊
my mom is from Oklahoma, just down the road from Lawton... I'm pretty sure I was down there that year.. trying to dodge cigarette smelling kisses from all my aunts... didn't work ❤
nice to see he had his Dad's friends dancing in the background
One of the first headliner rock concerts I attended was one of his with the Shelter People. I was just a kid, and totally taken in with the group!
I've seen Leon Russell live 4 times. First time was In Riverside CA at Raincross Square around 1980 or '81. Acouple of years later as an opening act for Hank Williams Jr at Pacific Amphitheatre. Then saw him twice in Nevada City, CA. One time was for a fund raiser for the land trust and then at a small club in town. Loved Leon and his music. So under appreciated.
Great clip . Last time I seen Leon live was at a rain soaked performance in St Petersburg Fla back in the 90’s. He played away for us all on an outdoor stage in the pouring rain. He was the opening act that evening for BB King.
The most productive use of three chords ever.
Glad I caught up with Leon a few years after this.
Amazing! He was long haired and gray by 1969 on E.C.'s 1st solo album.
❤❤❤. He was a concert pianist before the age of five. Makes sense.
