"STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND" LYRICS:
How many days has it been
    Since I was born
How many days until I die
    Do I know any ways
That I can make you laugh
Or do I only know how to make you cry
When the baby looks around him
It's such a sight to see
    He shares a simple secret
    With the wise man
    He's a stranger in a strange land
Just a stranger in a strange land
    Tell me why
    He's a stranger in a strange land
Just a stranger in a strange land
How many miles will it take
    To see the sun
And how many years until it's done
Kiss my confusion away in the night
Lay by side when the morning comes
And the baby looks around him
And shares his bed of hay
With the burrow in the palace of the king
    He's a stranger in a strange land
    Tell me why
    He's a stranger in a strange land
Just a stranger in a strange land
    Well, I don't exactly know
What's going on in the world today
Don't know what there is to say
About the way the people are treating
    Each other, not like brothers
Leaders take us far away from ecology
    With mythology and astrology
Has got some words to say
About the way we live today
Why can't we learn to love each other
It's time to turn a new face
To the whole world wide human race
    Stop the money chase
    Lay back, relax
Get back on the human track
    Stop racing toward oblivion
Oh, such a sad, sad state we're in
    And that's a thing
Do you recognize the bells of truth
    When you hear them ring
    Won't you stop and listen
    To the children sing
Won't you come on and sing it, children
    He's a stranger in a strange land
Just a stranger in a strange land

Leon stands alone. As a session musician he played with many. When he started touring with Maddogs and Englishmen, Delaney and Bonnie he caught the eyes of George Harrison and Eric Clapton and they all toured. Everyone wanted to play with Leon. He had that extra gospel/soul no one else had. Thank you Leon for your music and legacy. You are missed.

He was my favorite musician for years. Back in the early 70s, i couldn't get enough of his music and that piano playing. I owned every one of his albums including Hank Wilson's Back. Sadly, he had better thungs to do and left us. He is still one if my all time favorites. I was so sad to hear he passed. He was one of the greatest showmen I've ever seen. Been sitting here listening to his Leon Live album. Rockin' music! I've seen him a few times. Incredible musician. He arranged a number of Elton John's songs. He's missed in my life. RIP, Leon.

Bob Oddo, are you related to a musician and comedian named George Oddo, by any chance?
I used to go see him perform at a little bar right at the end of the pier in Venice California back around 1982 or so.
Then all of a sudden he disappeared off the face of the Earth and I never knew what happened to him.
Hey, thanks for loving this video, it's definitely one of my favorite songs by Leon.

First time I saw Leon was on an afternoon at the Tulsa Fair Grounds. Summer of 1972. Three Dog Night opened. Leon walked out in the audience and handed out tambourines with the Superman "S" on them. I took it with me to all of his concert's. He'd always wave and say, "You were at Tulsa". Sure do miss Leon.

He opened for Traffic in Ft. Worth, TX, wearing his white suit & top hat. He was magnificent. By the end of his gig, Stevie Winwood came out, Leon got ON TOP of his white grand piano and sang Song for You while Steve played the piano. It was beautiful. Leon even played guitar that night. Everyone was in tune with each other. Thank you Leon-I know you are singing with a celestial choir.

I've seen Leon 3 times - the 1st time was at SMU with the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and was the worst concert I've ever seen to this day.
It was not Leon's fault but Joe Cocker differently did not want to be there and was terrible.
The second time, I think was at Dallas Memorial Auditorium with his band and they (he) was fantastic.
The 3rd last time was in a club in San Rafael California - New Georges in the 1990s and it was a tour with Edgar Winger & John Enwhistle bass player from the Who.
Small club at best can fit 150 people or so.

One of my favorite Leon Rusell's album is Hank Wilson's Back - which is Hank Williams music - kind of country & Western with Blue Grass sensibilities.

Leon was filled with the musical spirit, his soul was poured into everything he did. He overcame a pretty big disability having had a birth accident that causes his right side to be paralyzed. He said he took piano lessons for 10 years (age 4-14) then he went out on the road with Jerry Lee Lewis. It was still prohibition and Tulsa was in a dry state, so he was allowed to play. He was a complicated authentic and beautiful human being. He was a true icon of authenticity and musical spirit. He overcame his disability and was for a time a pillar of the musical Americana after touring with Joe Cocker on the “Madmen and Englishman” tour and documentary.

I heard this the other day and a feeling of nostalgia swept over me like a tsunami, and I realized that this song completely explains how I've been feeling the past few months... unable to recognize the country I grew up in any longer... truly, a stranger in a strange land. The energy of this poet/singer/songwriter live in concert adds so much to the poetry and his emotion flows from the screen and speakers... such a raw talent... and rapping before most "modern" rappers were even born... I first fell in love with his talent in the Carney album, with Masquerade and Tight Rope... whew... get misty just thinking about all of the memories wrapped in his songs... Thanks Leon... RIP...

appreciating, or rather, not appreciating, Leon Russell --
The word "unique" gets overused, misused, and it's a shame because Leon was unique in the absolute definition of unique. There never was anyone remotely like him and there never will be, and like most everything that is so very precious in life, most of us didn't, for so many understandable reasons, take a moment and think about how sweepingly extraordinary his talent was.

Rapping in 1972...cool. Met him after a show in St Louis in 72, and he was kind, invited to visit if we were in Oklahoma. Ah, memories. Love the man, saw him last in 2008. He remains the master of time and space and a blessing to this world. Thanks to Elton for reviving him. Peace.

I was lucky enough to see LR twice in my life, and it was magical. My mom told me a story. We lived in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, 2 hours from Tulsa, Oklahoma, LRs hometown. She had a friend that worked for a home lighting company and was called to do some work at LRs home. He took his 16 yr old son that was learning to play guitar to the job. LR met him and invited him to come out to a show that night in a local club. He brought his guitar, but could not get into the club because of his age. He was standing on the sidewalk and up pulls a limo. McCartney, Clapton, and Harrison got out and went in. Imagine being 16 and ALMOST getting to play with all these legends. Bummer, but what a great story to tell your kids.

First concert I ever saw was 1970, in LA, opening act was 3 Dog Night, then Elton John, and then Leon Russell with Rita Coolidge as back up singer. Imagine my awe. Russell absolutely stole the show, coolest guy in the arena. My first boyfriend was a concert bouncer and he got me in for free. I don't think anyone sat down through the entire show. Russell was absolutely amazing.

Have almost all of his records since the 70’s. Finally went to see him a year before he died. He was really frail and rode a motorized scooter from backstage to his piano. “Uh oh,” I thought, “I’ve waited too long to see him.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. He played flat out, just like this, with funny ad libs in between songs, for 2 hours. Amazing. Voice very strong. Bitched about his ex-wife in many comments. It was almost like hanging out with him

Leon Russell is the most talented singer, songwriter, poet, author, musician on many many instruments, producer, trendsetter, legend in my lifetime since I heard him in 1970 on the Mad Dogs n Englishman Tour in Detroit when I was 13!!! I have never stopped listening to him to this day and never will. His style and uniqueness is incomparable. One person commented there never was anyone else who could sound like him, but I knew a piano player named Captain Lewis working in the Detroit area in The Bullroper Band that was his twin in looks, sound n style!! That was in the 1980's, n I don't know if he's still alive and well, but I hope they get to meet each other someday, n I would LOVE to see both of them again!!!! Leon also produced his nephew's band The Tractor's at his studio in Oklahoma n they were my lifetime partners favourite band!!!! He died as well 2 yrs ago n I pray 🙏 I get to see him again as well. I was young then am 66 now and lonely for those ab fab rock n roll days!!!

I knew there must be a mighty talent behind it and that's when I found Leon. What a genius and superb pianist. Yes I can see where Elton John and many many others got their inspiration from.
