Saw this band @ Woodstock, then again at the Fillmore East. Early use of live bands using a horn section. Joe is fabulous at covering R’ n Roll tunes. Great band, great tunes , great shows!

Leon had absolutely nothing to do with the arraignment for 'Feelin' Alright'. This is the same arraignment as the original '69 version - long before Russell joined the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour.

Fell in love with him at age 14 in 1969. Saw him at a concert at Soldier Field. Saw him throughout my life. His poster above my bed. Woo hoo. Adored this man his music and lyrics. The best.
Wow I grew up with this stuff too thanks to Mom, You are so lucky to have seen him with the Grease Band in 69. I was only 8 in 69 but have all the memories.

Joe is immortal..never made a bad record.a guy who "had no voice"😅. didn't write many songs , didn't play an instrument,..he just knew what to do,the music was everything..
These are not your typical human beings. Leon and Joe both look like wildmen at times. I takes a wildman to have the confidence to get up in front of people and make music that free, that good and that soulful. They were a constant pleasant surprise.

@@amyshehi4731 I got to see Leon a couple years before he died in a small venue in Davenport, Iowa. I have been to many concerts since my 1st in '73 (Chicago) and this is one of my top 3.
The voice, the soul, the herky jerky movements, man, I just love me some Joe. This is real music, when talent and ability counted. Its sad to think Joe would not make it today in the corporate sanitized music world. Glad I grew up in the 60’s.
I also grew up in the 60's and I agree with you totally. I did manage to finally see him in London later in his career and loved it. His version of "Whiter Shade of Pale" was magnificent. My sister and I had his first album when we were in high school - still love his songs "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Sandpaper Cadillac" and "Do I Still Figure In Your Life" - can never forget them.
This "good old days" mentality happens each generation, regardless of the quality of the music. What such commenters are lamenting is not the lost music, but their lost youth.

We mostly view our youth as full of happiness and the music of the time adds the themes. Still doesn’t change the fact music was better then. I'm also listening to modern groups like Durand Jones and the Indications, Ghost Hounds, and Nightwish just to name a few. We have more ways to access good music than we've ever had, and if you're judging today's music by what is readily available rather than using the tools available, well no wonder you're feeling melancholic. I myself like Nightwish and a lot of the younger blues artist are great but innovative groups like these don’t get on the radio much or onto Spotify like recommend lists. I am sure there were guys my age in the 60’s complaining about the new music and how they just didn’t have talent like Benny Goodman or Artie Shaw. My main complaint is the corporate nature of music now. Also, could you imagine Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan or Rod Stewart trying out on American Idol?

As great as it is, its not just the music, the culture that gave rise to the music was extraordinary. To be young is always a good thing but to have been young in the 1960's, that was truly special!

The song was written by Dave Mason and Steve Winwood, of The Traffic, that is for it is so good song. Joe Cocker made the best version that's right.
If I'm not mistaken, the pianist playing at this performance appeared to be Chris Stainton, who regularly played with Joe Cocker.
Phenomenon!! I saw him in ‘78 at a tiny club playing piano~singing @ age 19x. Time stood still and I stared…30ft away, had no idea who he was then. Would have loved to have seen this tour…Omg…spiritual🎉😅

Leon was probably too stoned that day. He was not the only one that got stoned in the 60s and 70s.

I have friends who don't like Joe and his flailing around, but for me it is the best part of his performance, to get really into the song he is expressing the guitar, piano, drums, playing with his hands and body movements, and the groans of agony that we humans experience "you sure took me for one bad ride, even now I sit and wonder why" Never be another like Joe!
He felt it everytime performed, this is his probably his best band but was great with the fusion jazz band stuff in the late 70s
He is the essence of the 60;s and some of the 70's with the "flailing" around. He's a free man. He doesn't care what anyone thinks. He allows himself to feel everything and express it all. He's free where it counts -- in spirit.
He had synesthesia, which occurs when someone translates one sense into another sensory experience. In music, a person more typically would say they really saw colors or images when they hear the music, especially if they closed their eyes. Cocker’s version converted it into a physical, feeling sense.

Bought this album when it came out. Played it visiting my aunt in Dallas and her neurosurgeon husband, this music transcended generations, we all rocked to it at night preparing, eating and after dinner on my uncles cool sound system. What special memories. Auntie is still alive at 89 but refuses a phone or PC so I can't send this to her. It's a shame as she'd love it. Her husband just died at 91.

I remember seeing this movie when it came out and I now own it on DVD. I did manage to see Joe before he passed and it was awesome. My daughter went to a Hansen concert years ago and Leon was playing with them. It shocked me but how cool she saw him in concert.

Joe Cocker had the ability to take any song and make it his own. Did it with so many, including the Beatles, Randy Newman, Traffic, and others. Gone too soon.
This one of my all time favorite songs. I feel incredibly lucky to have been a young man who got to enjoy such an incredible musical era. I am now 71 years old and the more I hear songs like this, the more that I appreciate them. I am sorry but there is just no comparison when you compare music from that era to what they are now passing for music.

I had the pleasure of seeing this Mad Dogs and Englishmen concert in Dallas, 1970. Absolutely, the best and most memorable concert I've ever seen, even overshadowing the Beatles, 1964 USA Tour.
The Brits were good in studio but they never groved like us Yanks 😂 lol
Saw them in April, 1970 outdoors in Chapel Hill, NC. It was near the end of the tour and they were clearly worn down. Cocker was drinking straight gin from the bottle and paused midsong to throw up off the side of the stage. Because there were so many people on stage, it was hardly noticed. And Joe went right back to singing. And drinking.
What a privilege to be there 🤗✨💕💫What a concert I missed. I was a young girl back in Venezuela where we love Joe Cocker.

I saw the Mad Dogs and Englishman concert at the Filmore East and it was the best concert I ever saw. So much talent, I even saw the Beatles in 1964 and it was great but a different era and you can't compare.
I bought mad dogs on cassette tape. back then double records were recorded on thinner tape than a regular single LP due to the weight of the reels. I played it so many times. Delta Lady, Space Captain, Cry me a River, the Letter....I snapped it within a month. repaired it w some scotch tape on the backside and kept on playing it till I snapped it again. LoL.
When Cocker began to sing a spirit takes possession of him and you got something more than human.

I got to see Joe Cocker in 1981 in NYC. He blew the roof off the place, it was amazing! But I've really been nuts for Leon since I first saw him at the Fillmore East when (unknown) Elton John was his opening act. Imagine that.
Man as a child my dad was a road hand for Mad dog and Englishmen. Then went on to do it for Leon Russell. I had a far out childhood ! Seen some things as a child and had the opportunity to see Mr. Russell and his wife perform on the SNL stage.
He felt, lived it . Thanks to his visual I felt it too. God bless him.
At 69 yrs old I reflect often of bands I saw live in concert. When I watch these videos the memories come flooding back always putting a grin on my face. It was real music played by real musicians with real instruments. Your chest would vibrate from the sound as the music blared through your soul. Damn I feel so lucky that I witnessed that rock and roll explosion in the 60's & 70's.

Actually, there was three drummers,a percussionist and a conga player .
Check the credits on the vinyl first edition thoroughly.........

You can also see the third drumset crammed into the backline and, even though he is only credited with "percussion", Sandy Konikoff visibly hope on it and is playing with the Jim's as third kit drummer, and sometimes Blackwell would be third with Konikoff on percussion.Usually,they stuck to just two on drumset and two on percussion with Bobby Torres on congas.However, the third drumset played by Blackwell, is also played by Konikoff, and Rita Coolidge said in an interview that, sometimes they would use four!
Jim Gordon and Jim Keltner were the mainstays on drums, with Gordon occupying the "first chair" position.Keltner himself once said that Gordon was a better player than him.

Leon Russell is NOT playing the piano on this!!! You can actually see him putting on his guitar and jamming away. You can also clearly see him playing guitar throughout the video.... no piano this time... look at the video closer and you will see. In addition, the piano player sounds nothing like the great Leon Russell, just sayin'. Peace out!

Think I was 16 yrs old when I had the honor to hear Mad Dogs and English men. I was completely blown away!!! The band was so damn tight, unbelievable!!! Real musicians!!!
