- Serj Tankian is emerging as one of my favorite vocalists so far on this journey of experiencing metal music (don't worry, Ronnie James Dio is still in my top spot!) He brings so much emotion and technique to his performances, and getting to see him perform live with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra made this treat even more sweet!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Serj Tankian live for the first time, performing "Empty Walls” with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Kardashev - Compost Grave Song

For great vocals listen to Gate 21 (Goodbye). Serj is a vocal genius
One thing of note, they had 4th album Mesmerize released 6 months before its companion album hypnotize. The pace and signature of the last song on the first cd is mirrored (in reverse) on the first song on the 2nd cd.
What are your thoughts on Bastille, their song Divide specifically?
Kinda wish the reaction was to the song Lie Lie Lie, from this performance. His vocals in that are just awesome, and he uses so many different styles in it. Definitely my favorite performance from this concert.
An interview by Elizabeth with Serj would be probably the most watched video on the internet
Damn right! That would truly be an awesome experience.
I can't imagine the epicness of that.
I would probably faint 😵
100% agree, hopefully it will happen
True I’m still waiting for the Bruce Dickinson interview
That part where Serj tell the audience to sing along, I think most of the audience was holding back because it was an Orchestra and you know, during Orchestra plays you're supposed to remain in silence. You can see the excitement of the people when Serj gave them the approval to make some noise hahaha
nice comment 👍
In 98 I saw SOAD at a small venue The Blue Note in Columbia MO. They were the opening band of the. After they were done playing they set up a table at the entrance. They were selling there demo album with first album on it's way. I talked to Serj for about a half hour couldn't believe how great they were. Serj was one of the kindest humble person I ever met. I was like you guys are going to be famous. Serj said thank you that is very kind. We are trying but time will tell. Wasn't long after that and they were all of the radio and playing huge shows. Wish I still had the signed demo album they sold me for $8.00. I must of played that album a 1000 times.
you so lucky
man.... the chance to talk to serj and see them live 2 things ill always wish i could do in my life that is amazingggggggg man
He could be referring to the Armenian genocide in this song.
@@UncleSarkisI've always interpreted the song as being about general war in the middle east, but specifically Afghanistan and Iraq.
The US government are responsible for millions of deaths of innocent people--women, children, families--in a bloody decade and the message from the Americans ignored the bloodshed. Like it was nothing.
Not Daron on those backing vocals but it's super interesting to hear such a similar voice in this song, giving us some idea to what could have been
Total agree
I had to do a double take because I legitimately thought that was Daron on the guitar lol
No, that’s Agent Pissant
Yeah not Daron. Similar sound and not dissimilar face either though.
LOL wasn’t expecting to see you here
I'll repeat what others have said: watch the music video.
It elicits such a high level of emotions - from profound sadness to white-hot anger that resonates on such a deep level. It really is a work of art.
I've always loved Serj's voice, but gotten the impression critics of vocals would judge its unique qualities harshly. It's wonderful to hear her talk about how much she loves it.
(And holy fuck this performance is amazing. I hadn't seen it.)
I originally fell for it when I was listening back when I was about 13 for the first time, but I always knew it was uniquely nasally and could be a bit hard to swallow. Someone like Pete Loeffler of Chevelle or Maynard James Keenan from Tool have different styles, but equally unique approaches. All amazing singers, they have enough nasality to be unique, but not annoying. On the other end I have never been a fan of the vocals in ACDC strangely enough, that style isn't my favorite thing, talented as the singer may be
No doubt his voice is still really good, but his voice back then was monstrous. That’s what time does though.
@@Ryuga-2015 It's not time. Sounding like Squidward, is a conscious choice he made. He WANTS to sound that way now.
@ashscott6068 no he doesn't. It's clear that his warm deep tone is long gone, you can hear the change in his voice since late 2002/2003 and in the 2005 albums. He has learned some techniques in order to compensate for that change. In 2005 he wasn't almost able to make the screams and growls of the debut album anymore, even if he tried (that's why in the last 2 soad albums you can hear him screaming high notes but no growls if I remember correctly)
That's how his voice has changed and how he decided to cope with it
The Auckland version of 'Lie, Lie, Lie' is a real ride.
One thing that has always struck me with Serj/SoaD from 'Chop Suey' on is the ability to make sudden and dramatic shifts in tone and tempo. With almost anyone else, this would be discordant, and feel like trying to awkwardly mash a bunch of entirely different songs together, but he/they have always been able to pull it off seamlessly.
With most of their work, they'll do it from verse to verse, but 'Lie Lie Lie' does it almost from line to line, jumping back and forth across genres, pitches and tones seemingly at random, while managing to draw it all together somehow into a seamless whole. It's a hell of a feat.
This has got to be a culture thing. Serj says his gma would sing to him w a native inflection even it was baby songs or pop music. His style is so unique thanks to his hard work and Babba!
@@JBGC916 Sudden and dramatic shifts in tone and tempo is definitely a hallmark of “nu metal” as well though. SOAD is arguably the very best of the genre (the only other contender would probably be Korn) but that dynamism was very trendy (and I don’t mean that pejoratively) in say 97-2002 when SOAD became mainstream.
Agree, lie lie lie is an amazing ride. I've not listened to Serg for a while and I had forgotten just how much range and stage presence he has.
I'm 41 seconds in, and Ive stopped started a dozen times at least.
Back in 2003 I listen to SOAD for the first time and someting resonated within. FWD to 2024 and I discovered your reaction videos to someting completely different, but thankfully they brought me here.
Your reactions to Chop Sui, Spiders and Empty walls have been driving me wild. I've been stop-starting your videos and I've been going back countless times only to be able to finally put words and emotions to the lyrics and melodies of SOAD. Music makes me cry, it emboldens me, it picks me up from the lowest depths, it transfers me to places I can't even begin to imagine. Music makes me feel. I cannot simply transfer my feelings into words, but your reactions invigour me and reflect what I want to say, but don't know how to.
I'm lucky, I've recently changed vocation where it's okay to talk about your feelings, and your reactions help me to mine for the depths where I've uncovered feelings that have been so far down and repressed that when I listen to this music and listen to your thoughts and feelings, I'm deeply touched, I feel a longing to further exploe your feelings about the music which, for some apparently unknown reason historically, moved me to tears for goodness knows what reason.
And one more thing, only when listening to your comments, when following the lyrics, I feel like I'm being sept away
Elizabeth, you have made my day. So looking forward to this one.
Wonderful!!!
word! 🙏🤘🔥
You constantly validate the talent that metal bands have, and why we love them.
Lots of great performances from Serj at this show. I highly recommend Gate 21. It's a hell of a showcase of his range.
My favorite solo piece of Serj is his Gate 21 performance at this show
Absolutely
True i forgot about that one
I hadn't heard that one yet, and my god what a great recommendation that one is!
Gate 21 from this show is a must-listen. Amazing performance and also his 1st time doing this song live.
This song is terrifyingly clever
Even in the actual video for the song he sings the chorus so cheerily as well as the live version
And the words
...
Dont you see their bodies burning
...
It has such a lovely melody
It invites you to sing along then you get the words stuck in your head and the sheer horror of the lyrics hits you
He even makes the chorus very singable
He want you to here
Dont you see????
I see what you mean
When someone ask me, which voice can still give me goosebumps, it´s Serjs voice. his voice is the sound of my youth and i am glad about!
I've only started listening to soad recently and I would have never expected Serj to be underrated given how amazing his vocals are
Serj is one of the most well-known rock or metal singers of his time. He's not underrated (which is good).
Guys, of course he is not underratet in the world of heavy metal. i will correct this and apologize for that mistake :)
I assume you said he was underrated before you edited the comment judging by the replies, smart choice removing it although i understand, many dont appreciate his voice especially post system
Oh my gosh. That was beautiful. Serj has no idea how much this means to so many. I felt the clouds opened up and bathed my soul .
His interpretation of "The Rains of Castamere" is absolutely awesome, you definitely should listen to it !
This!
@@lucaszukunft76 what ?
I went to this. We went already knowing he had an amazing voice and we were not disappointed. The orchestra just blended everything beautifully as usual. Was a great night.
I'd love to see you interview him, that would be the coolest Tea Time. He is not only an amazing singer/musician, but also a very interesting human being
I would absolutely recommend 'Sky Is Over' for you to review, Elizabeth. So many classic elements that only Serj can bring, but the music video adds so much more to it considering how surprisingly simple it is. On a side note, thank you for your amazing videos and being able to put how the music feels to me into words that are easy to understand and digest. Keep on keepin' on!
I like this performance a lot, but I personally prefer the studio version on this one. Hope you listen to it at least on your own time. The music video is amazing also.
Same! Don't know why, but here the beginning seems a bit off
@@BlackArr0w I just prefer the feel to the studio version, he sings the verses a bit faster and also he belts a little more than he does here. I think the studio version just fits better with the pacing of the lyrics and is more impactful overall.
@@BlackArr0w A big part of it for me is that the balance between his vocals and the volume of the orchestra is off. The orchestra is a bit bombastic
The versions express different emotions. It's a new translation, basically. It doesn't resonate the way the original does, and that's okay.
The original music video for this song is amazing and impactful
I get tears in my eyes watching the official music video, its just so profound, showing war played out by children instead of adults, it really hits home
All his pain, bad thoughts, yearning for peace, and determination to love is what I hear in that voice. Just. Wow.
Bit before the middle of the song, when he says "dont waste your time", technically it sounded like he didnt sing the time and stretch it as it should had been, but he doesent waste time singing "time" that way for so long. Pure genius! In my opinion Serj is the greatest rock singer of all time, not only the best singer, but also best lyricist and can write great instruments as well. I ran to the record store the day Toxicity came out and his stuff just does not get old.
I don’t have much experience with SOAD either, so I really feel like I'm on the journey with Elizabeth. This performance almost brought me to tears, and I really appreciate the unpolished raw quality of Serj's voice together with the orchestra.
Welcome to the club! Set your Spotify to random and enjoy!
You should check the whole concert where this video comes from, it's great!
@@RafaelMotta91 Thank you for that suggestion.
Have a wonderful journey of musical discovery. My tip is to check out Tina Guo & Serj Tankian ~ Moonhearts In Space.
@@restojon1 Thank you. And thank you for that tip 😊
I'd recommend Artsakh and Bari Arakeel (sung with his dad) because Serj is in a natural setting with an acoustic guitar, singing in Armenian. It's so beautiful to hear him in his native language!
WHAT?!
@@rwilt8 Yes, I also love his performances in Armenian. Only there the song is not "Bari arakeel", but "Bari aragil" - a good stork. I want more songs in native language🧡
Thanks so much for this
okay I was going to summarize what I love about Serj's voice in a comment, and then you said it towards the end, its the pleading, and longing in his voice. a desperation to be heard and understood.
I freakin LOVE how you pick things apart and tell us what we already felt about a song but you lay it out for us to fully understand the depth, complexity and purpose of all the little details. It only makes me appreciate and adore the songs at another level ❤❤❤ thank you for bringing us your wonderful insight along with your beautiful face and spirit. ❤
The original music video for this song is the one that hooked me on the album. The ending came to a shock, everything depicts children playing war and the reality shown at the end was so blunt I was shocked for the rest of the day...
yep, empty walls is the true soad album 4. way better than hypnotize/mesmerize
Not only children playing war, but every major news cycle reports of events starting from 9/11 and going all the way to Osama's execution, through the invasion of Iraq and embassy bombings.
If you were old enough to remember the news as the video goes by it is a great piece of visual poetry ending in a rough reality check
your videos systematically make me cry from pure joy of how much you love and appreciate music
this makes me wanna continue journey and fall in love with music more and more
This performance is great, you need to check out Lie,lie, lie from the same stage, it's absolutely amazing)
By the way, Rains of Castamere Live at The Forum is one of the best serj's solo perfomances, nut, unfortunatelly, video quality isn't good enough(
Serj sining Rains of Castamere is easily my favorite live performance of his. Shame the only recordings are low quality. I will kill for a studio version, or better version.
@@PortlandOriginal There is already a studio version in Spotify
Yes! Lie lie lie is amazing!
Yes!!!!! Such a good performance and we see a lot what is voice can do !! High low almost opera in certains place very good song to analyst for elisabeth !!! And i talk about lie lie lie
@@PortlandOriginal ruclips.net/video/tlkgbwmN9mQ/видео.html there is a studio version
This is the best thing I have seen on RUclips ever! Love the analysis, love Serge, love the Charismatic Voice. Thank you.
I can't wait for this one! Please, also listen to the song "Gate 21" by Serj Tankian.
Greetings from Brazil!
OMG I ASKED FOR THIS YESTERDAY AND YOU POSTED!!! HYPE
Bawling my eyes out at the end, it's like he's being so submerged by the emotions, it's way beyond just a song and it's such a strong feeling. I don't have the words I don't even know why I'm writing that... Absolutely amazing and devastating at the same time.
You are so good at catching everything too, and the bits of context you keep delivering are definitely adding to the strength of it all. Thank you.
What I love about Serj is that he really cares about his messages, they're genuine and emotional.
He's one of the great musicians of our time.
I was so happy to learn that Serj had moved to New Zealand to write his music. Never -in a million years- did I think he was going to perform IN New Zealand with NZ musicians.
It made me immensly proud. 😁
Once again you capture it almost perfectly. About Serj, he gets really passionate about his music, he wants it to "speak" to people, hence his choice of topics. Also, he was being trained as an opera singer when young.
This concert is my favorite Serj performance ever, from beginning to end. His voice and songwriting with an orchestral backing is just on another level. Even the errors he makes, like you point out, sound good.
I'm surprised I haven't seen this one before, but it literally gave me chills through my entire body. I grew up listening to Serj from SOAD to his solo stuff, but this right here brought a whole new level of emotion. Thank you for doing this one.
As often said in this comment section, Rains of Castamere with him live is a master peace. Beside that, a real gem is "Bari Arakeel" in armenian language with his father. This, even I don't understand a single word, is such heart warming...very much recommended.
His father's voice is so smooth and lovely- And they sound alike, but Different. Beautiful duet.
Arakeel in Armenian means Storck, which is a common symbol of homeland for Armenians, love and piece (storks return to their nests every year)... Simply put, it is a song longing for homeland and prosperity, and freedom. Armenian folk songs often have the sad feeling to them
Bari Arakeel is truly a musical treasure.
"Opera is just sustained hollering" That is my quote of the month
I'm really glad to see you doing some of serj's solo stuff. He has an incredible voice.
Finally, you got into Tankian's solo career! I was longing for this since you've started with SOAD! I strongly recommend you Gate 21, from this same show. It's breathtaking.
If you haven't already, you definitely HAVE to watch the music video. It's full of emotion and the message hits way harder
I agree completely! While this video is probably more in the interest of this channel I do prefer the music video version. As someone who was 17 when the war started, knowing that all the video is alluding to, many of my friends and classmates witnessed it and lived it first hand... The video is a real gut punch for me.
Thank you for taking the time with these testaments. I enjoy listening to you. You have a very quick and energetic understanding to what you hear.
Listening to Serj/SOAD always makes me emotional. I usually reserve listening for when I am running in the rain. Peace
Serj Tankian doesn’t write songs he writes something more, it’s a whole performance piece. Each song is a stand alone story, a fucking entire musical in just 3 minutes, he’s a genius.
If you ever get the chance to interview serj you won't be disappointed. Hes extremely intelligent and kind and personable. One of the best people to interview
The orchestra compliments Serj’s voice so well I love this Live performance truly amazing
I love seeing you nerd out to Serj. I've had a really tough day and nothing has kept my attention but this. And you are really good at it, thanks!
Great orchestral performance of this great song, didn’t know this! One of the best voices in rock and metal! Nice reaction! 👍🤘
This performance made me become very emotional. It broke me down to tears early on, long before it did you. Serj's talent is amazing and his songs are touching.
Thank you for deciding to cover this performance. I really enjoyed this! :)
You rock Elizabeth,
Thanks!
Serj is such a unique talent, there is no doubt. I've watched so many of your reactions just because I love your completely open and honest emotional reactions! On a completely different note, I would love to see a reaction to one of the all-time great and influential bands for heavy music: Van Halen. I'm really surprised you have not yet! There are so many songs from them, but vocally the one I'd select as a starter from their first era is Light Up The Sky. Brilliant and wide-ranging vocal styles and musical writing/performance! God bless and keep up the great content! It's a joy watching someone discover all of this wonderful music! It's like hearing it for the first time again ourselves!!
I can’t wait for more of serj, keep up the great vids
Gravitas and melancholy… amazing piece and your insights are as always, on point! Thank you!
It is so amazing to watch someone who can't possibly have had a more different lifepath react so emotionally to music that has had such an impact on my own life. Every video I watch on this channel brings a tear to my eye.
This song gives one chills it is so powerful in its message
Very refreshing to see someone witness serjs live vocal capabilities for the first time. I smiled the whole time. That voice was my youth.
I was obsessed with Serj’s solo album during by first deployment. Some really great stuff. When this performance was released I bought it right away with a signed poster of this performance. Very cool looking poster. Love this guy!!
I live in Portugal, just a little country in Europe, and SOAD came here a long time ago. I wish I could have seen them live, but the point is, a friend of mine was a teenager back then, saw them in our hometown (Coimbra), and told me that in the end of the show he went and talked to them, also that Serj was the nicest and that they all ended up smoking together. This man really is a vocal beast, what a time to be alive!!
One of the most moving songs I have ever heard is called "The Host of Seraphim" by Dead Can Dance. Even if you don't do a video on it, please listen to the song. Emotion will flow through you like nothing before.
Nice call. Or anything from towards the within
Serj has a voice of the gods. I could listen to him all day.
This song always makes me tear up but I'd never heard this version before 🥺 I'm not crying you're crying!
I’m so glad you listened to his solo stuff also so much emotion in all of his songs.
I understand why you like to use the live versions but I do hope that you'll one day revisit this song just for the music video. It's amazing.
Going through the SOAD playlist. And the fun thing I noticed in this one is that, since this is an atypical live performance, Serj is doing fun new things with the song that aren't in the studio version. Messing with melodies and rhythms and such.
Lots of Serj and SoaD these days, I approve!
Watching you evaluate heavy metal is inspiring. This is amazing. Thank you for your hard work. . You are the only person I trust.. Thank you very much.
Serj is truly and artist with lyrics, song and paint.
Serj has gotta be up there with one of the best voices in rock as a frontman or soloist! His voice is amazing!
Please continue this SOAD adventure it's amazing to revisit their work with you! Rage against the machine would be F. amazing !
ruclips.net/video/3PsvH7oMzmU/видео.html&ab_channel=Edensin would be amazing, the way he sing this song is another face of Serj
Commenting early and will watch later. But Thank you so much for taking my (and others) suggestion of his solo stuff. I cant wait to hear you listen to his vocals. Serj is the most amazing Male singer.
YES!!! finally!
Both my favourite live performance, and my favourite album!
Thank you for doing this reaction justice! I think it's super deep, and all the other reactions to this don't amount.
A significant amount of heavy metal and hard rock artists have either a background in classical music and opera or they enjoy listening to it. This is why so many rock songs mesh so well with an orchestra.
HOW can no one get goosebumps over the way Serj can sing. It's mesmerizing
In classic System style, I recommend listening to the album version too. It has his usual crazy flair but still so much emotion. Such amazing talent.
If you loved this one, you should also be interested in his rendition of "The Rains of Castamere".
Thank you for recommending this. It was amazing!
wait what holy shit gonna go watch that lol
I have listened to system of a down since a very young age. I am now almost 31 years old and a LOT of the songs he has sung over the years still hit me right in the feels...
This is one of those songs.....
...War is a terrible thing....
Don't you see their bodies burning? Desolate, and full of yearning? Dying of anticipation. Choking from intoxication.... I want you to be left behind those empty walls.
An absolutely wonderful performance by Serj Tankian. I really recommend watching the Video of the studio version, as the video has extremely powerful imagery.
Empty Walls is my favourite Serj song. But, for sheer theatricals, his version of Lie Lie Lie from this concert is amazing.
I'm so glad to see you do this version; in your own time I highly recommend checking out the whole album from this live stage, as there are some amazing tracks on it. I personally recommend Lie Lie Lie, he has great audience participation, some fascinating vocal tricks, and really amusing facial expressions.
Serj is one of those singers like micheal jackson and freddy. We will never get a legend like this again. Way to original ❤❤❤❤
We need SOAD to have an orchestra backing them up it would be amazing.
Have lived in Auckland my whole life, I remember when they 1st came here to New Zealand, Serj fell in love with our diverse culture & people, but most of all our Beautiful native scenery & forestry. So much so that He bought himself a Holiday house out in our little coastal town of Piha with it's Black iron sand beaches(All our West coast beaches are black iron sand) Very Beautiful, and only 30-40min West of Auckland! It was his spending a lot of time here that led to this awesome collaboration & performance all coming together..😎🥰🥰❤
Don't know if He still has the holiday house or not, but would like to think He does..🙂
Much Love & Respect to Serj and the boys..❤🥰😎
I love Serj’s vocals on Gate 21 on that record. Thanks for this reaction
You're the best ELIZABETH!!! THIS IS ONE OF MY FAV SONGSS!!
I was there when they recorded this, the conductor had a lot fun while preforming. Loved seeing Serj live, sadly there was one guy in the crowd that just kept yelling "system" after 15mins of it the whole theatre turned around and told him to shut up, He was very quiet after that. Should still have some videos of this on a hard drive somewhere.
Thank you for everything you do and the amazing music you choose and bring new perspective to.. also Serj is one of the greatest and far too underrated
Serj's voice is incredible.
auckland version of lie lie lie and sky is over are awesome too, i cannot say how often i listened and sang to all of them - you bring all these "old" songs back to my mind, thank you so much!
This is prolly the best song IMO of his solo stuff, you should watch the music video of the studio version now, one of my fav vids he or SOAD has ever done. Also I hope you're secretly binging all of SOAD's discography behind the scenes. I think you'd vibe with them way more than it just being something you listen to for content.
So glad I got to watch their last live performance. Serj is one of my favorite singers.
oooh this version gives me chills! I love it so much!
I am not personally musical whatsoever, not sure how I found this channel but I have always been fascinated with Serj's voice. This was super interesting
I like his 'rains of castamere' the most out of his live performances. First time hearing the part after modulation really gave me goosebums. You should listen to it.
I wish I could leave more than One like on this video. Love your analysis as much as the artist and classical instruments. Saved the video as well.
You should also check out his live performance of Goodbye Gate 21, it's just him singing and playing the piano, and I believe it would be perfect for an analysis!
I'd also highly recommend the acoustic version of "Darkness Within" by Machine Head.
Wow. Ok. That interpretation in regards to the bur-ning breath catch… just gave me the goosebumps of my life! That would be so incredibly innovative & creative… damn… that just got me…❤
You are on the right track. A great meaningful song, still brings tears
Music video was also well done
The music video is what really makes this one shine believe it or not!
