Also even without watching one of these videos the vowel shift Hozier does there is super evident, Any time I've sang along to this song I've said it ehhh-men
Hozier is flawless. His music helped me get through losing my mother while pregnant and helped through my post-partum depression. My baby girl who is now one year old, even loves his music and bobbing her head along to his music . I owe Hozier so much. Such a talented person.
Yeah long hair sam had a very square jaw, soft face very masculine shape. Short hair Sams face is rounder aided by the beard and a little more fullness from the cheek weight.
@Wassila Baraddan He looks just like book Sirius!! His personality is definitely more Lupin though. He's very soft spoken and humble when he aisnt singing.
A while ago I saw an article about "the pop punk accent," how a lot of pop punk and emo singers sound kind of pinched and Midwestern despite mostly being from SoCal and Florida. Linguists were confused by it and chalked it up to a quirky genre convention. But after watching so many of your videos, I started thinking that it's actually probably an intentional choice and a tool to help those guys sing in the kind of high range that emo vocals often use. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!
I think that makes a lot of sense. The accent you sing with does most of the work in singing for you, so if they all have a sound that they are after and that sound just so happens to correspond to the Midwest it could get mistaken as the cause not an effect. It's similar to how most pop singers use similar vowels even if they have a strong regional accent. Singlish.
Yeah, I think it’s a good description: pinched. I also describe these type of male pop singers is whiny and on the verge of crying. It’s a style that is getting tiresome.

His new album is amazing as well! God I feel he's so underrated. And underappreciated as an artist, thank you for bringing Hoizer to light on your channel. He sure deserves it.
I literally have never givin a shit about the intricacies of vocals. And I really don't now. But for some reason when you talk vocals I'm interested lol.
Well Hozier is a baritone so around the D4 - G4 area is a very belt intensive area for him. An operatic baritone doesn't go above a G. He's clearly very technically skilled to do it with such ease and support
I love watching you mimic facial expressions. It makes me smile every time you do it! Also the backing singers and the band sound amazing. It just blended so smoothly. I saw him in NYC this last summer, and he has this voice... Ugh it's just beautiful. The whole concert and experience was amazing.
I suspect that weird smile-prep was a version of what my opera professor used to have us do, “breathing into the correct placement.” When you were starting low and planning to go high without time to really prep in between, she’d have us take the breath that started the phrase in through the mouth/jaw shape we’d use when we were hitting the note. I don’t know why it worked, but it did. I am astounded at how he can balance head and chest voice so seamlessly.
I think what I love the most about you Sam is that you respectfully critique and comment on artists and your passion for this is so visible. Sam you are sooo aware of everything happening in the midst of singing. It’s so helpful to hear your words. You teach from a place that people can soak up the information your giving. Just a natural teacher!!
@@atmassylphen6785 Yeah, but that's his only one. And it's not even one of his good ones. If Passenger was in the 60's or the 70's he would be viewed as a great songwriter like Dylan, Stevens, and Croce. Sadly, few people care about that anymore. He's so much more than a one hit wonder.
Wow! Amazing feedback. Really loved that performance of Hozier at the subway. As usual, Sam hits all the points about the singer’s vocal techniques. Definitely awesome points that I can use to improve my singing.
wow....I had no idea that there were/are so many little nuancés with vocals...you seem to get so much joy from listening to and then explaining to us all of these songs. You have a new sub from me.... Your teaching calculus to us 3 years and we love it....
5:50 This. This note you made is one reason why I love your videos. I’ve seen various reactions to this performance, and it’s great to see Hozier getting credit for his control and, well, mastery of his voice. But you seem to catch these little technical things and details that sort of slip through the cracks for others. Just part of why I’m always so glad to see your take on things, regardless of how many people have commented on it already. I know I’m going to come away with extra information that’s interesting, and possibly helpful in my own practice. You’re just too good, Sam!
I have no interest in learning to sing but I would pay for lesson time just to chat and hang out with you, you’re such a treat to watch - your energy, emotion and passion is infectious! Keep up the awesome work Sam! ♥️
I discovered your and Tara's shows on Wednesday, and since then have watched all of your videos here. I adore how honest, in depth, and just positive you are. It's rare and precious to find on the internet.
I LOVE WATCHING YOUR FACE WHEN YOU’RE ENJOYING SOMETHING. You’re just so joyful and it makes me happy. Is that creepy? It’s creepy, #sorrynotsorry 🤣 His vowel sound on “dog” and “sharpen” and “course” are so interesting to me. I cover this song (transposed up a half tone) and I kind of almost unconsciously use those same vowel sounds and it just makes the song. Also, question mark meme face LMAO
Congratz on 500k Sam! Totally late and totally the wrong video but I wanted to say it anyway! This, ladies and gents, is what it looks like when some does good work doing something they love where life rewards them for it. It is beautiful to see and I couldn't be happier for you friend! Gratz!
Sam that was a fantastic reaction I loved every minute of it. You explain things so clearly (that even someone who can't sing a note but wishes she can) everyone can understand what you're talking about.
just wanna say you’re my favorite ‘vocal coach’ channel. you’re always so objective and educational, but still entertaining. keep up the great videos :)
Loved the informed and intelligent commentary on this. I'm no singer, nor do I know the first thing about singing, but I love hearing people who are knowledgeable in a subject talk passionately about that subject, it's always interesting to see what sorts of things someone who knows what they're doing pays attention to or notices that I, a person with no experience in the field, notice or pay attention to. Really fascinating watch, thanks!
I love watching Tristan and Sam react to the same things because they deep dive on some same things but a lot of it is different so you get to see two professional perspectives💖
I’m also a fan of Rebecca; she kind of... lets herself get caught up in the stuff she really likes, and tries to describe what exactly that X Factor is that made her so impressed. But I’ve got to say, I think Sam’s probably my favorite overall. He’s so well rounded, and he usually has a few notes the others I watch miss. Like the sort of weird smile/grimace thing to prep or brace. His review of Nothing But Thieves was great as well. He always has interesting notes about what he covers.
I think that Hozier's at his best when he's belting - even though he's a baritone (apparently) he can access his higher range so effortlessly. That being said, he's improved so much as a singer between albums! I think touring was great for his voice, which is contrary to so many singers. If you could react to one of his live performances of "Movement" or "Nina Cried Power," that would be fantastic! Hozier is probably the singer that inspires me the most as a baritone who's trying (and failing) to improve my range.
I’d love to see the juxtaposition between when she’s dancing and when she isn’t and the decision each artist makes in determining when it’s necessary to have their full breath to sing. That would be another interesting aspect to bring up.
Amara Jordan yes,I recently saw her in concert and I was amazed at her ability to sing while dancing/ doing acrobats. Would love to hear his thoughts on it
I absolutely love your videos. "Take me to church" is actually the song I sing the most when I want to experiment with my own voice, and your tips/notes are definitely what started me on really realizing/noticing what felt right, what sounded better, and just overall better technique. Thank you!
Sam -- "No masters or kings," I think that part is usually sung higher and he was prepping for that but sung it down last minute but it definitely is an anchoring thing either way.
Very good point. Maybe he felt it would be too strained to sustain it at the higher pitch, so he reverted to the lower one after kind of testing the waters. It’s better to shift it up and not mess up. 😅 Fewer people to note the switch than would note strain or a mistake.
Sam, you're so entrancing when you get into the music. Your smile actually makes me smile. I've never reacted this way to a YT personality. Keep up the great work man. I'm so happy you're channel is growing.
Such a treat for those in attendance - and such a an awesome person to have thought to have recorded and shared such a fabulous performance. Thanks for commenting and analyzing his technique!
Dear Sam, I don't know why I watch your videos. I am not a singer nor do I aspire to be a signer. BUT YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO ADDICTING TO WATCH!! I LOVE THEM! And I appreciate how well you explain everything. Thanks.
I'm always curious about the differences between amplified and unplugged singing. Is he singing exactly as he would into a mic, or is there a difference? Is he increasing volume? Changing breathing?
@@thetalkingnerdz5347 hmm well what I'm thinking about is the fact that humans sang for thousands of years without mic, often trying to project to large groups of people, so producing high volume and sounds that carry was valuable. And now it seems that singers are on average singing quieter and quieter and speaking or even whispering into the mic. So that's the most refreshing aspect of this performance to me, and there's always a magic to hearing unamplified performances, as in a...church.
Definitely a change in volume for sure! When you are performing without a mic, you have to project your voice! Which means a lot more practiced breath support so that it sounds just as good!
Also as others have noted in here it's all about projection. As a novice there's a good number of songs I can sing pretty well quietly but if I start trying to project it I notice I've got to change how I sing everything and think through how I want it to sound more. But it allows for all that high/low emphasis to happen naturally.
There are very few people in this world doing what they were born to do. You are doing exactly what you were meant to do. I sincerely appreciate these videos and you!
Sam, I just want you to know your videos are appreciated. I recently started learning the technical parts of singing and hearing your analysis is SO HELPFUL (and interesting) to me. Keep up the great work. I can already tell a big difference in my own voice from watching your videos.

I found your series randomly this morning and have been binge-watching. Fascinating to learn the nuances and logistics of singing, and I really enjoy your analyses of the performances (especially the 'bad' singers on shows) and that, while the sound may be unpleasant, most have good qualities that can be nurtured into something decent. Very uplifting to a 'non-singer' like myself, though I am a huge appreciator of vocals. I especially enjoyed your explanation of Hozier (a fave of mine) and his techniques explained. You are very enjoyable and informative. (subscribed) - Also, Maynard is AMAZING, love that you love him too.
Love your videos, because even if I don't know anything about singing, your expansions feel easy enough and it's refreshing to hear a professional give reasoned comments. Was super excited when I saw this title, Hozier's mad talented.
♥️ watching you react and explain things in a way that finally make sense to me. I would love to see you react to Blue October and/or Justin Furstenfeld live.

Your feedback is informative, kind, and valid, stated with a feeling of love, not criticism. You’re 1 in a million. Bless you.
Me too... I'd love it if he ventured into metal territory, I'm most interested in his opinion about Dio and Rob Halford for obvious reasons, but honestly there are so many singers with interesting voices and techniques.

Sam you are sooo aware of everything happening in the midst of singing. It’s so helpful to hear your words. You teach from a place that people can soak up the information your giving. Just a natural teacher!!
Please react to Passenger singing live, he has such an awesome voice, but he's so underrated because he's a folk singer
Isaac Alley UP!!!
Yes please sam!
I agree
He’s not That underrated. Let Her Go was played into the ground when it came out.
I just love watching Sam's face mimicking the singer's voice, then explaining why. And his genuine smiles throughout are so great
Finally Hozier!!! Sam thank you from the bottom of my ❤
The world needs more positive, passionate, kind content like this! Thanks, Sam, keep up the great work!
the pose that he has when you pause it at 5:58 is so majestic, just look at him!
I LOVE WATCHING YOUR FACE WHEN YOU’RE ENJOYING SOMETHING. You’re just so joyful and it makes me happy. Is that creepy? It’s creepy, #sorrynotsorry 🤣
His vowel sound on “dog” and “sharpen” and “course” are so interesting to me. I cover this song (transposed up a half tone) and I kind of almost unconsciously use those same vowel sounds and it just makes the song.
Also, question mark meme face LMAO
Please review Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine!
hozier is literally my favorite musician this was so cool thanks so much for doing this it was so interesting to hear about ❤️
Congratz on 500k Sam!
Your smile is contagious Sam 😘
His work with Anuna before he was famous was amazing
I think that Hozier's at his best when he's belting - even though he's a baritone (apparently) he can access his higher range so effortlessly.
That being said, he's improved so much as a singer between albums! I think touring was great for his voice, which is contrary to so many singers. If you could react to one of his live performances of "Movement" or "Nina Cried Power," that would be fantastic! Hozier is probably the singer that inspires me the most as a baritone who's trying (and failing) to improve my range.
He's Not Apparently a baritone. He is one, and a damn strong one at that. Tenors, do not, get that low.
I think the reason he sounds the way he does is because he's irish. And he speaks similarly to how he sings.
hozier and sam johnson in one video? you damn know i click
I love how ur eyes sparkle when u are explaining things and ur honest smile when u are watching him sing I would love to have a lesson with you x
Really enjoyed this video! ☺️Would love to see a video on the best of Pink’s live vocals.
Everyone wants Sam to watch them whilst nodding excitedly and smiling
What a love so much about Sam’s videos is how obvious his love for music is. He has such a appreciation for the talent of the artists he analyzes.
Hello, good morning. Your tips help keep my voice safe.
Greetings from Germany, we have afternoon 🙃
Its 9 am for me. But still sleepy like its night.
Such a treat for those in attendance - and such a an awesome person to have thought to have recorded and shared such a fabulous performance. Thanks for commenting and analyzing his technique!
You've helped me appreciate music on a whole new level.
Proximity to the mic is what makes the most difference
Damn half a million subs now? I see your plaque on the wall. I was here in the beginning lol.
Silver play button is 100k
Sam, I just want you to know your videos are appreciated. I recently started learning the technical parts of singing and hearing your analysis is SO HELPFUL (and interesting) to me. Keep up the great work. I can already tell a big difference in my own voice from watching your videos.
Kindly react to a Filipino Sisters sings "NEVER ENOUGH(The Greatest Showman)" by 4TH IMPACT Thank you very much.
Every time i see one of your videos i found myself smiling the entire time, your reactions are so real and show how much you love what you do, i don't even sing nor know any of these concepts but i still come back to your channel 👏 thank you for all the great content you are putting out there
11:11 long video make a wish.
I wish that things will get better
when I see all those 1's, I don't want to spoil the magic and put a thumbs up to make it 12....but I would otherwise....I love Sams work

YAY I was waiting for you to do some Hozier. Loved the video as usual. Thank you! :)
I've heard Hozier sing this song live a few times. He's such a consistent vocalist, and a wonderful talent. Thanks for the review.
He also does that smiling thing when performing live.
It's awesome when you see an expert just sitting there, smiling, and enjoying the experience.
Yeah this was so fun to watch Im glad he did this.
My favorite band!
@@raem6893 same here! I love how Justin changes up the songs when doing acoustic shows.
What an absolutely incredible reaction video. Your energy and enthusiasm are EVERYTHING!! You just got yourself another subscriber 😁😁
I'd love a reaction to Ben Howard, such an incredible unique vocalist imo. Very hard to replicate how Ben sounds.
Sam, I am a teacher, and I have to say that even though I teach Math, amazing teachers are amazing teachers, regardless of subject matter. You are a gifted, inspiring, and wonderful teacher. It is obvious that you love your subject and more importantly, your students..which are represented by all of your followers, but also the professionals you review. Your feedback is informative, kind, and valid, stated with a feeling of love, not criticism. You’re 1 in a million. Bless you.
Please react to Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" live, with Ronnie James Dio. I want to hear your opinion about Dio SO badly!
Me too... I'd love it if he ventured into metal territory, I'm most interested in his opinion about Dio and Rob Halford for obvious reasons, but honestly there are so many singers with interesting voices and techniques.
Yes, that would be amazing! Dio had such a distinct style and timber, it would be so cool. I love Tamplin's analysis of it as well, but I'd love to hear Sam's as well.
Love this song! Since day one! Can't believe how fantastic he sings this song in that setting!
