As a gay kid who grew up in a church that told me every day that I was sick, this song hits home. They didn't know I was gay, but I did, and their words decreased my self worth so badly that I still have no self confidence and I am 48 years old now. Careful how you treat people.
I'm SO sorry they made you feel that way sweetheart 😔 in my opinion those who call themselves "Christian" or use religion as a reason to hate or judge another are the fucking WORST. People are cruel and apparently have too much time on their hands... instead of taking care of their own business, they get all up in everyone else's... their hatred, fear and anger made them characters in YOUR story, and irrelevant in their own... you won. You know who you are and the fact that you have the ability to love is a strength... WHO that is, makes no difference... it's the 21st century. Live, love and know YOU are worthy of love.
@Rose Madder I was just confused because Kiwi said the people there didn't know they were gay so was confused why they called Kiwi sick if not for that
You where born and to me everybody is born to me outof love, other peoples tiny minds is what make us sick, I don't know you but even if you are purple with yellow dots, I love you when you love, whomever you love
Mr. Jayvee, thank you for this. No 2 people will hear this song and think of the same thing/situation. I live in the South and those of us who are members of the LGBT+ community have grown up hearing things like, "Pray the gay away" and "You must not go to church" or "You need more Jesus in your life". I am a firm believer in God BUT, that being said - IF my beliefs are true, we all have to face God at the end and vouch for how we lived. I won't be going to hell for anyone else's actions in their life - just mine. I refuse to judge someone based on what they do in the privacy of their own space - as long as it doesn't harm another living being. I wish we could all live this way and worry about our own stuff. May you have a wonderful day and keep up the good work. Stay strong, my guy. ❤😊
Yeah I'm a southern woman who happens to be bi and this song hits hard. I've never suffered because of who I am...people in my little town mind their own business, in general, thankfully.
My mom was raised in a free will Baptist church in the south. Didn’t even know she could be gay. Bc of that it wasn’t till after her 3rd husband & 3rd child that she even realized she was gay. She had been desperately searching for love with men she was biologically unable to feel attracted to. Growing up in the LGBTQ+ community I knew my family and the ppl who helped raise me weren’t abnormal, but religious family members told me my mother would burn in eternal hellfire, when I was 7 fcking yrs old. It was traumatizing bc my mom was everything to me. I knew they were wrong but I was terrified of god and hell. Till I realized at 14 I’d rather burn in hell with the ppl that I loved then be in heaven with those evil religious btches who would traumatize a child to the point I devolved stomach pains and severe anxiety. I also remember my mom telling me how I should keep our family a secret to keep me from being bullied. I didn’t know at the time but that must have broken her heart. I was the only child she really had left, my older sister had run off and my ex step dad had threatened my mom with having her other kids taken away for being gay if she didn’t give custody of her toddler to him. The one thing they did for sure was make atheists out of the both of us. I believed in god as a child but all faith was killed by their bigotry and cruelty. But on a positive note my best friend in HS found my home to be her haven. Her parents were homophbic bigots but my family gave her the courage to come out. (She’s married to her wife now and they’re about to go through IVF to have their first child.) By HS I quit hiding my family and developed a reputation for beating anyones a$$ who tried to tlk sht to me. My mom passed unexpectedly in 2020 but I’m grateful she got to see marriage legalized and the end to many state level discriminatory laws. I’m also grateful that my HS best friend’s child won’t have to hide her family.
@@Comrade_mommy Babydoll, I feel your pain in a way. I spent 3 years of my life in a Free Will Baptist. Folks are cruel and unfortunately, your mom saw that side. I lost my mom in 2001 - 5 days after I turned 18. My heart goes out to you. Your mom sounds like she was a strong, wonderful woman who instilled some great things in her daughter/son. I don't know you but I am your sister under the "human condition". Sending hugs and love your way. ❤❤
Love is love. Hate and being different is just something that shows a person's maturity in the true human condition. My God loves all and I mean all.....
This song was about the anti lgbt hate crimes occurring and still occurring in Russia. Hozier said that the gang going after the kids was specifically a Neo-Nazi gang, based on many far right gangs that had done similar things in Russia. This song was sung in solidarity with the atrocities committed against LGBT+ people in Russia. Hozier is not Russian, but he wanted to sing for the Russians who lived in fear everyday of being themselves.
This song is hauntingly beautiful. All this time I had no idea that it was about being gay. As the PROUD Mum of a gay son hearing/seeing what others have gone through really does break my heart. For anyone out there who feels alone & unloved because of who they love; let me know, I'll do my best to help you feel just how truly worthy you really are. 💜💜💜🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈💜💜💜
I don't know that the song is necessarily about being gay, but rather the hypocrisy of the church and some of those that attend these institutions. Catholic priests were diddling altar boys but the church was covering it up while still preaching against abortion or birth control or homosexuality or whatever. A lot of so-called Christians are Christians on Sundays but live a sinful life the rest of the week. Too many conservative bible-thumpers condemn homosexuality and other lifestyle choices while having affairs (Jim Baker and Jerry Falwell come immediately to mind) and using up all the offerings to buy themselves mansions. Not everyone is good and not everyone is bad. A majority of us probably fall somewhere in between. There is no reason for any of us to let others tell us how to behave and how to live.
Ive personally seen Hozier perform live. This song in particular is sung with so much passion. For the chorus, it was like a scream of grief, where he'd pound his fist against his chest with every word
I just wanted to say GOD BLESS YOUR PARENTS FOR RAISING A MAN LIKE YOU who has the heart that you do!! Whatever woman you end up with is going to be a LUCKY LADY!! Wow sometimes the intolerance of people Dam, it just hurts my soul. My brother was gay, he faced a lot of discrimination. When he came out, he lost a lot of family and friends. But he was my brother and I saw his soul for what is was, pure light and kindness. Not for who he slept with.
Stunningly beautiful, devastatingly gorgeous song 🥲 Hozier, who had a Protestant upbringing in the the Quaker faith, but he’s calling out the hypocrisy he sees in the catholic church which influences so many parts of Irish life. From Wikipedia: “The video, shot in grayscale on location at Inniscarra Dam in Cork, Ireland, follows a same-sex relationship in Russia and the violently homophobic backlash that ensues when the community learns of one of the men's sexuality. The video had a budget of 500 euros.” A Masterpiece of a song and video.

Compelling and beautiful, the build to the chorus is soaring. I saw him do this years ago on Saturday Night Live. Just hearing him and watching his eyes reached my soul.
Do they know the real story or what's it morphed into. The song was written to bring attention to the vile and heinous crimes perpetuated against the LGBT community in Chechnya. They were hunted. They were tortured. They were imprisoned. They were killed.
I saw/heard this so long ago, people can be so ugly, pulls at the heart-strings. It hurts to see so much hate in the world and how others are affected by it. Maybe we all should worry about fixing our own imperfections instead of casting stones at others. Great song by Hozier, beautiful vocals.
I've always loved your channel and reactions but this one commands respect. Your open minded interpretation of this song was just awesome. As a gay man who felt wrong about it (when I was many moons younger) this song really tapped into that feeling I had. He sings it with such power and conviction it's simply amazing. I'm going to enjoy revisiting this reaction many times over ❤️
I'd suggest Nina Cried Power next if you want another song with deep meaning, he has a ton of great songs (Shrike, NFWMB, Cherry Wine, and Movement to name just a few).
This song, his voice wonderful. Then the first time I saw the music video? So powerful. Still find it hard to watch because it makes me cry. It took it the song to another level.
Most people don't get this song till you see the video. Makes me sick. My daughter is gay and how anyone can be bigoted, racist or sexis is beyond my comprehension. Just love people for who they are. One love. Too much hatred in this world.
The box he buried, is symbolic of the secret that he carried. And when you see those men holding the box, it means that they found out their secret. This song is amazing. The video is heartbreaking.
For another truly stunning video of this song, check out the ballet dancer Sergei Polunin dancing solo to this in an empty building. Haunting, sexy, ethereal.
It is so powerful for sure! I think it could relate to anyone who is 'different' or dealing with ignorance and being afraid of something or someone different than themselves, in such a terrifying and violent way. The religious part could just mean the 'ignorant' ones think that what they believe is better than truly knowing and understanding the individual in question. thx for sharing Jayvee :)
"Hozier elaborated that "an act of sex is one of the most human things ..but an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation ... the song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love"
Hozier is amazing! Please treat yourself by listening to “Arsonist Lullaby” and “Nina Cried Power”. The great Mavis Staples joins him on Nina Cried Power, it’s an awesome song and tribute to those who have fought for civil rights through there talents.
Love is LOVE ❤ why is it easier for people to hate than it is to love. Life is short, don't judge someone on thier sexuality, life is hard enough, just live it with love.
Other great Hozier songs to check out are "Work Song", "Movement", "To be Alone", and "Talk". He also did a cover of "We are Young" and Destiny's Child "Say My Name" and they're both pretty epic! And on a somewhat unrelated side note, you should absolutely react to Leon Bridges "River"! It's such a compelling song and it just gets in your soul!
Every time I hear this song, I think that I'd like to hear Elton John sing it. Hozier's voice is absolutely amazing, but I think Elton would kill it, too.
Thank you for highlighting another great Irish artist on your channel, Jayvee!! Hozier himself has not identified as gay at any point but is labelled an “honorary lesbian” by the LGBT community for how poetic and astounding his lyrics about women are 😁 Hozier is just one man, Andrew Hozier Byrne, and other greats of his are “Nina Cried Power” and “Movement”, and a STUNNING live performance of his would be “To Be Alone live in Kilkenny” ❤️❤️
My amazing son is gay and is not sick...he is perfectly made in Gods image just like straight people are, and he was born that way, he did not just decide to choose to be gay, and i do not believe he will not go to heaven because of it. I am so thankful he has been born into a much more accepting time than it used to be, but we still have a long way to go.You said it perfectly...Love who you love! Thank you!!
Hating someone for any reason is so wasteful; many great people out there if you just decide to not judge. Probably the hardest thing you will ever do, but beat down the desire to judge day after day, and some day it will not be able to rise again. And then the joy of life and seeing everyone for their true selves will be yours.
You do not get to choose who you love and all love comes with pain how much pain are you willing to endure for the love you have that's the only real question
I will never understand why some ignorant people feel it’s their business to tell others who to love, what way to live your life or what race is better than another. I will never tolerate discrimination of any kind. Ever.
As a gay kid who grew up in a church that told me every day that I was sick, this song hits home. They didn't know I was gay, but I did, and their words decreased my self worth so badly that I still have no self confidence and I am 48 years old now. Careful how you treat people.

The box he buried, is symbolic of the secret that he carried. And when you see those men holding the box, it means that they found out their secret. This song is amazing. The video is heartbreaking.
Great reaction, respect my brother
Love this song... powerful.
Thanks for reacting to something different.🙃❤
That's a fine looking 'high horse'....what a lyric 🥰👊
This is a tough watch but an amazing song!
For another truly stunning video of this song, check out the ballet dancer Sergei Polunin dancing solo to this in an empty building. Haunting, sexy, ethereal.
Yes! That video is absolutely incredible.
absolutely mind blowing!
Yes....watching Sergei dancing to the song is amazing and all the words you used as well!!
"Hozier elaborated that "an act of sex is one of the most human things ..but an organization like the church, say, through its doctrine, would undermine humanity by successfully teaching shame about sexual orientation ... the song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love"
touchy reaction...you are a very kind person.....
Peace and love to all mankind ❤️
have the best day everyone and know you are loved .
Hozier is amazing! Please treat yourself by listening to “Arsonist Lullaby” and “Nina Cried Power”. The great Mavis Staples joins him on Nina Cried Power, it’s an awesome song and tribute to those who have fought for civil rights through there talents.
Hozier has a song called “Movement” that is great! The video has Ukrainian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin in it.
What an amazing reaction ❤
This song has such meaning for so many people for different reasons. Hate is hate and it’s ugly. Peace and acceptance is needed in this world
Every time I hear this song, I think that I'd like to hear Elton John sing it. Hozier's voice is absolutely amazing, but I think Elton would kill it, too.
You’re an angel, Mr Jayvee 🙏
You never choose who you love. You feel it. I pray one day everyone would understand that. Love is love...simple and pure.
A powerful message powerfully sung
I’m straight but this is my favorite/one of my favorite songs to listen to
Thank you for reacting to this.
Hozier is huge here in Ireland. Please check out his song Nina Cries Power - it’ll blow your mind!
Thank you for doing this bro 🙂
I am 62..I wish we’d had music like this 🏳️🌈
This is one of my absolute favourites🌸🇬🇧
Thank you for highlighting another great Irish artist on your channel, Jayvee!! Hozier himself has not identified as gay at any point but is labelled an “honorary lesbian” by the LGBT community for how poetic and astounding his lyrics about women are 😁 Hozier is just one man, Andrew Hozier Byrne, and other greats of his are “Nina Cried Power” and “Movement”, and a STUNNING live performance of his would be “To Be Alone live in Kilkenny” ❤️❤️
Bless you Jay 💜💖❤ -x-
Cracking song and video 👏🏻
The video for this song always makes me want to cry 🥲
Ohhhhh god bless you bro
So powerful wow
hugs to all you beautiful people 🤗
💜💜💜💜💜
Great reaction
This applies to any "non biblical" relationship...gay, straight and out of wedlock etc.... It's very deep. I think it's beautiful.
Thank you!!
Cherish him and guard him.
"Ohhhhh, Ohhhhhh!!!" - Jayvee -march 2022! lmao
You know this song is beautiful, it's not our place judgements on anyone; their life is none of our business
Hating someone for any reason is so wasteful; many great people out there if you just decide to not judge. Probably the hardest thing you will ever do, but beat down the desire to judge day after day, and some day it will not be able to rise again. And then the joy of life and seeing everyone for their true selves will be yours.
This things are STILL happening......this is a crazy cruel world that I'm trying to understand.....but it's quite impossible.
You do not get to choose who you love and all love comes with pain how much pain are you willing to endure for the love you have that's the only real question
Love is love, let's let it be
Bro you r the best
You should react to “to be alone” “it will come back” “moments silence (common tongue)” and “shrike”
I will never understand why some ignorant people feel it’s their business to tell others who to love, what way to live your life or what race is better than another. I will never tolerate discrimination of any kind. Ever.
OMG finally someone gets it.
