it would be cool to have, but i'm satisfied with my current Qi charger. i was actually thinking about getting the Nomad charging pad. sure, it doesn't charge the Apple Watch like the supposed AirPower would, but it's just as useful. so, i'm not interested in the AirPower at this time. thanks, but no thanks Apple.
What I heard from the initial statement is that it didn't meet the standards of Qi - and so wouldn't have been certified. So, after campaigning has Apple convinced Qi to certify them? I mean them the AirPower not being Qi certified would've limited the people buying it - who'd spend that amount of money on a product that is not of high standard? Plus doesn't look good for the company if something goes wrong, and the product wasn't certified. It'd be interesting to see if Qi certifies it, and if so, how much lobbying it took...
I’m very happy with my iphone7, and wireless charging is the only meaningful upgrade apple have introduced since. However AirPower is a solid half of the equation in my view. So i wont be upgrading until the whole wireless solution Apple initially pitched is a reality.
I’m not incredibly excited for this product, tbh. My Apple Watch has a loop wristband, which will be a bit of a chore to unravel each time I want to charge the thing. I will also have to purchase a new AirPod case in order to fully take advantage of this device.

your statement about the Apple Watch using "inductive charging, a completely different technology" made me facepalm so hard. Qi wireless charging is inductive charging. inductive charging is really the only wireless charging technology. Qi just lays out the rules for how the coils need to be wound, voltage, current, etc. It's still inductive charging though. the apple watch is simply too small to use a standard Qi coil. The primary difference in wireless charging is whether or not to operate at resonant frequency. Resonant frequency is best for long range but not for short range in phones as it produces more heat in short range. this core technology is 100+ years old too so I feel it should be fairly easy to understand.
