    Looks good. One of the things you might have done with the laser protection plastic, kind of late now, would be to etch the FPF log and perhaps the material specs in a visible corner of the door. Branding for you, and a handy visual reminder of the material in case someone asks a couple of months down the road and you don't want to dig for packing materials.

    What a christmas treat, two videos in one week. I feel like I’ve opened an extra advent calendar window. This is a brilliant build (like all others), it looks so professional and “off the shelf”. As ever, looking forward to the next video… no right hand protection on either, great news!!

    Very nice build. Really enjoyed it. One critique is that you set off to create a modular design that others can use on smaller / cheaper printers, but the door assembly needs a large format printer. I guess that the frame can be spilt along the vertical as well, into 4 sections to allow printing on a smaller machine? Thanks for the great videos!

      I agree, I don't see myself getting a printer with a bigger build volume than my current 220x220x250 any time soon. With my current budget, I just couldn't justify the cost. Since I don't need the enclosure for a laser I'll work on a different door solution. I'll probably also use some white coroplast I have hanging around here for the walls.

      Maybe, laser cut a vinyl sticker for the 'FPFBox'?

  • @gear_ant

    Amazing job. 1. just a slight observation that i wanted your input on. Wouldnt it have been better to put the dowel pin & grub screw on top? That way you can easily access it, and itll be less likely to fall out over time (because gravity)?
    2. i own a fiber laser & also made my own enclosure. for lighting, i found that putting a light on top doesnt do much because the laser head blocks off the light. So what i did instead was order a 6" ring light & used some double sided tape & affixed it right around the lens. I also tapped into the fiber laser's red dot power source, which was 5 volts, and powered the LED straight from the laser :)

    Led strips for the win

  • @wayne_taylor
    @wayne_taylor 2 дня назад +1

    Looks awesome. LED strips in each corner ? Would make it nice and bright. If you wanted to get extra use RGB, ESP32 and WLED the. Maybe you could hook into the software to change the colours depending on status.. red + in use, flashing red = error, etc … great build 👍

    • @drkgumby
      @drkgumby 2 дня назад +1

      I came here to suggest the same thing. With Node Red and/or Home Assistant and some sensors (or if the software or laser has an API and some MQTT magic) you really could automate the lighting to indicate status.

    Turned out great.
    I would have tried hand drilling out the filament pieces before reprinting. I also was wondering why you didn’t use the dowels instead. Didn’t realize that they were that much different.
    I suspect that all the unused screw holes are bothering you.
    Since you didn’t need all the outer screws now you can print out some hole plugs. Or perhaps cover strips with the plugs on the back for the clean look like on the door. Either way with the same filament or TPU.

    I am excited by this project. I have been struggling with a decision to buy a second printer just so I can make just a few parts in PA6-GF. This project, assuming I can print it on my A1, will fit the bill.
    Have you considered, at least for the door anyways, adding threaded inserts and using bolts instead of screws?
    I was also wondering if a third magnet at the center of the door would help stop the flexing when you open it?

    Light suggestion “Lamomo White Led Strip Lights” from AMZN - easy to mount in a 5mm wide 3d printed channel and the don’t come unstuck like the self stick LED’s tend to.

For vents maybe a double Louvre angled down on both sides so there is no direct light path through the vents, attach to either side of the coroplast.

    Just a design suggestion. I appreciate the idea of using a piece of filament to join the two pieces of your frame. The technique is often used to keep the end user from needing to buy additional hardware, but you are already using dowel pins as your hinges on the door. I would have forgone the filament and just used two dowel pins in these locations. Really great build on this project. I've enjoyed following along on the journey, and it's definitely given me some design ideas in general.

    Love the design, thanks for sharing! Hard to see if the depth of your enclosure is enough to not bend the umbilical too far?
    The optical fiber (=glass) cable inside should not bend sharply, it could damage it or limit its life.

    Awesome project :D
    I think I witnessed discussion on designing something like this min 20 times in past 15 years and never saw that discussion turn into a finished item. I love this :D and you can expand now the whole system with accessories (ports, fans, lights, mini non-transparent doors, sliding doors, button extensions...). Awesome - THANKS !!!
    ps. the holes you made for "skewers" could be used for threaded rods to really stiffen the frame if you made the holes protrude in the corners :D

    adhesive LED strips would be great but i think for an even better option would be the "silicone defused LED strips" otherwise known as Neon LED strips, makes for a much less harsh lighting setup.
