    Now I want to buy some ball detents I may never use to add to the pile of cool things I might some day use.
    Seems really elegant with the use of existing materials where possible vs every thing looking like a 3d printer nail.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks! I try to incorporate parts that already exist, like you said. There's no need to design that spring feature as a 3d-printed part.

    • @nerddub
      @nerddub Месяц назад

      this is absolutely true, but it also super easy to add just a spring pocket and use whatever diameter spring / ball combo gives you the desired force or fits into your project constraints, same mating part, just detent pockets. once i figured this out, i have added ball detents to things that definitely didnt need them, but I needed them hahaha

    1) Great design and execution on this, very satisfying and well thought out.
    2) I totally get the idea of messing with a camera for hours and just wanting to get the project done.
    3) "It's already over engineered enough"...this is blasphemy as there is no such thing sir! Haha!
    Great work as always!

      Ha, something can CERTAINLY cross over into "over-engineering" territory! Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. That being said, check back next week, I have another over-engineered solution.

    14:44 keep an idea on wear and tear on the tube. The ball is after all a "point" touch on the brush's tube, and it might wear down a groove (as one keeps naturally placing things in the same spot once they get used to it, it's a human thing we all do). My old, old German made vacuum machine for ashes had a clip on system very similar to this, and because the bend had to go in a recess, it eventually wore down the metal on the edge thin. Just a thought.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад

      I doubt this will get used enough for it to be an issue. ASA is pretty tough stuff too. BUT, these ball springs are actually just a ball bearing, so the wear should be somewhat minimal. We'll see how it goes, I could always print the 'cup' out of a different material, or even something with carbon fiber which would actually wear down the ball instead (which is easier to replace).

  • @mr_voron
    @mr_voron Месяц назад

    That’s amazingly clean. Well executed! First thing I thought of when I saw the swing and click intro was “Oh hey, Dyson cord manager thing”. I’m gonna need to incorporate those detents into some designs. Sounds incredibly satisfying.

    I may be getting really old. Hell, I am old. I’ve been a woodworker for almost 4 decades now. Never heard those called “ball detents”. I do have a gallon jug full of “bullet catches” that I have used in building numerous cabinets where they are used with a small strike plate. When you install them into a cabinet door, they CATCH in the strike plate to hold the door closed. Some folks use magnetic catches for a similar solution. Bullet catches (now called ball detents) are a more elegant solution. Either way, great use for them to be used for your hose storage. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and an idea for holding the hose together so you can access your dust collection control…… bungee cord.
    Edited: For grammar

    i'm thinking of making a vertical reel for my 4 inch hose. the reel can be turned and hose can be guided to spiral-wrap around it a few times. that way i can have it only a couple feet tall, and 22 inches diameter.

    great project! what kind of clearances did you use for the detents in the groove and the mating holes?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад

      I just used 0.2mm, and 0.5mm for the clearance between the part bodies. I just modeled up the ball spring thing and gave everything 0.2mm clearance. It worked great.

  • @MumrikDK
    @MumrikDK Месяц назад

    That a tempting mechanic to use for something, but I really do wonder about the steel on plastic wear from the ball. I fear it'll make the locking positions really weak over time.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад

      ASA is pretty strong. I did think about that, but at the resting position, the ball is not really under tension, so it's happy to live there forever. It only sees some wear when you spin the tab. That doesn't happen very often, maybe a few times a week? I'll let you know if it fails, but the ball also spins, so the friction should be pretty minimal.

    20:38 why can't I hold all this hose?

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад +1

      It was oddly difficult. It's relatively heavy and 20 feet is quite a bit.

  • @sokofabco
    @sokofabco Месяц назад

    When designing parts for ASA, do you do anything to compensate for shrinkage?
    Generally, I design to size then scale 100.4% or 100.5% in slicer.

    • @RobertCowanDIY
      @RobertCowanDIY  Месяц назад +1

      I didn't notice any issues, everything was spot on. The main mechanism was PLA and ASA, and I did nothing to compensate. Everything was printed on a Bambu X1C.
