Fascism loves a rebrand, and a lot of the time that rebrand is femininity. Female fascism. This appropriates a lot of social movements and utilizes “protect the women and children” language. That makes fascism adaptable. It also sucks girls and young women into far-right pipelines they may struggle to escape from. Let’s talk about it.

There are sound quality issues that bother some people. They resolve around 23:30 when I switch to a different outfit. I think I had the mic clipped too close to my face in the other outfits??? I can't fix it in post really, and some people are having difficulty with the sound quality, If you skip to the last section you'll miss my section about Rococo, Hippies, and Cottagecore but I really get into the marketing of tradwives and white supremacy in the last section.
Sounds like gain is too high and is causing your voice to clip.
Maybe aside from moving your mic, lower the gain settings if possible?

I could not even imagine how horrifying and damaging the concept of manifestation is for ppl with OCD. Yes, person with thoughts you quite literally cannot control, it is your fault if you think about someone dying repeatedly and then they die.

Yeah, I have chronic illness, major physical disability, and serious OCD. I'm constantly wondering if this is my fault even though a geneticist dx'd me and told me it's genetic.
Somatic symptoms are real, somatic pregnancies (or rather pregnancies with no actual fetus) are even a thing. I do believe in indirect body alteration to soooooome extent. Idk.
Fascism always needs to divide to work. They need an ingroup and an outgroup to be against. To work against this, we need to rebuild community. Stuff like Tennant owned housing, multigenerational housing, mixed schools, grassroots community work and it all needs to be radically inclusive and accepting. Fascists fought unions, because they stood as one for everyones rights.
Our utopia is one of connections. One filled with makerspaces and repair shops, libraries and third places to meet without spending money. One with less capitalism. Like one of the commenters said: Our utopia is solar punk.
Thank you for this great video. It was really a joy to watch and I also enjoyed the thoughtful commentary underneath. Maybe we should start taking Cottagecore back by creating diverse knitting groups filled with cis and trans men, women and nonbinary people willing to learn and doing marmelade exchanges every autumn.
I think this was a great video, but I wanted to make a note of something:
I think, in many ways, cottage core lent itself to being used as propaganda by the right. Much of it was always very individualist. Doing things yourself, having your own land with your own garden, the idea of having your own house out in the woods with neighbors far away. It reinforces this fantasy of not having to rely on others.
Any art movement we push, like SolarPunk for example, needs to reinforce the idea that our happiness is built together, not separately. We could build an esthetic similar to cottage core if we wanted to, but with groups of cottages in our pictures instead of one cottage. Maybe with groups making bread together instead of one woman making bread for her nuclear family. Cooperation, reseprocity, mutual aid, we can value these things in our art movements instead.
Yeah the individualism certainly made it an easy movement to co-opt. Yes, that's a great idea! Villagecore!

Cottagecore is a sign that America has fully digested its feminist movements. Yeomanry for the ladies! But without the free real estate that made the yeoman dream possible, yeowomen are doomed.
One aesthetic counter: Solar Punk. It has the celebration of DIY, love of nature, and brings in other good stuff like the right to repair and environmental harmony. It also feels a little more fortified against the right because of the fact a lot of solar punk content is made by indigenous people or by people of colour. It's an aesthetic future that celebrates diversity and environmental harmony. It's not perfect, but it feels like a good counter.

As Contrapoints recently discussed, it can be argued that fascism was always “granola”, and that a merge between hippie/homegrown movements and fascism was probably inevitable, because they come from the same core of rejection of modernity. It’s not a stretch to see a coalition between two groups who both value pure bodies untainted by foreign, modern objects.
Yeah it was definitely a movement easy to adapt to the ideas of fascism and incorporate into their propaganda!
This is an 'I'm halfway through the video and I might have more to say later' comment, but I personally think that, in terms of lolita fashion, cottagecore is more akin to classic lolita than sweet lolita. Classic is more directly inspired by Victorian and Edwardian daytime attire, and it tends to feature longer skirts with less floofy petticoats and prints that are more cottagecore-y. Lots of florals and 'granny's picnic blanket' type prints. I comment this as someone who does occasionally wear lolita fashion and uses lolita pieces in most outfits and has had all of the lolita terminology beaten into my head by the at times very aggressive online community, though I don't call myself a 'lolita'. Loving the video so far!

Sweet Lolita can be directly linked to looking like a dessert shop or even having food themes. Classic Lolita is more closely defined to "classical" themes like Victorian wear and nature paintings. Gothic Lolita has all the black and white, plus religious iconography similar to other gothic fashions, so a "classical"/old school goth but not "Classic Lolita".

I am a leftist and definitely know this is a valid and real issue, and it’s not the first or last time fascists have co-opted a community/aesthetic. However I would have liked more specific details about the “they” referenced especially in the beginning who are propping up and funding trad-wife influencers. Oh the they in that case was literally people like Ben Shapiro and his media ilk, as well as evangelical organizations like Quiverfull and far-right talking heads like The Golden One openly conspiring to bring women into the movement. Of course women were always present, white women have always participated in white supremacy. And many of those women were part of the push to bring more women into the far-right.
One thing that really makes me sad is that if these women who become trad wives don't successfully flee their children will become like some of my friends. Who have to flee once they are adults. And if they are afab(Like my friend I'm currently prepping to flee) not only do they have no job experience but they have no education or people they knew before the life they got forced into. And have to rely on those they meet in places their parents cant access. Mostly online connections. Largely romantic connections from what I've seen.

But I am much more concerned about the children who will be a part of these movements from the time they are born and have no fault or agency to avoid this fate. As Contrapoints mentioned in her video about JK Rowling, the book Right-Wing Women by Andrea Dworkin does a pretty good job of explaining the mindset of women who slip into conservative ideology. The book was written 1983, yet it still parallels a lot of the talking points that modern conservative women say. Throughout history, the most accessible way women have been able to climb the social ladder is through marriage. Women are only slightly less disposable as mothers. The right gives women that very simple, easily obtainable path to happiness and social prosperity that they’ve been conditioned to seek their whole lives. To the younger more social media-savvy women who’re already jaded by the state of the world, aesthetics also play a role. A sunny cottage in the woods with a handsome man and beautiful kids is way more aesthetically pleasing than riots in grungy cities and pictures of people covered in tear gas or beaten with batons.
As for solutions, the left needs to be a little bit kinder to these women because no matter how volatile they are, they’re still victims. Many trad wives who know they’re in an abusive relationship don’t want to leave because they don’t want to deal with the metaphorical public flogging that comes with admitting you were wrong. Contrapoints put it best in her video about JK Rowling. The hardest part about leaving a cult is the moral sunk cost of realizing you were preaching the wrong thing and the shame that comes with all of your friends and loved ones saying, “I told you so.” Shame is a hell of a drug. Many people don’t leave their abusive partners because they don’t want to deal with the shame of making the wrong choice and ignore their friends and family who tried to warn them. No one wants to feel like an idiot. Let alone an idiot who caused harm. It’s even more complicated if they have children. Many trad wives grin and bear their abuse because it’s the only way their kids get to eat and sleep in a warm bed. We’ve seen how many abusive men use the kids as leverage when their wives want to leave them.

martial arts have the same problems: the gyms and the estetic of the body. attract a lot and radicalize easily into right wing, wile self defence and martial arts classes should become a first priority for us in the left.
Yeah gyms are really good recruiting grounds for high-control groups. I made a video about that but I ended up deleting it because I wasn't happy with it. I felt like I had a lot more to say. Maybe I'll work on that again soon.

My mom is a right wing evangelical and the whole Christian manifestation thing is so frustrating. It’s so absurd to tell yourself you shouldn’t think about things that are unpleasant. My sister and I joke about it by saying “the words you speak!” When we are worried about a negative outcome, a reference to Matthew 15:18 that my mom shortens to ~the words you speak~ as a warning against talking about something like your mental health or issues you’re facing

Manifesting:
Seneca is truly the source of manifesting from a philosophical perspective and Seneca's influence is felt far beyond manifesting into any discussion involving minority or marganilised persons emotions. But, Seneca is garbage; instead Audre Lorde's "uses of anger" helps us understand the role and strategy of negative emotions and experiences.
Domestic Labour:
Most societies that have ever existed have not been patriarchies, but they have been examined by colonial people from patriarchies, often on reexamination, we can see that colonisers are simply trying to impose and project their own values on other societies in some kind of evolutionary series, only acknowledging other genders or women* in what they consider to be the most "primitive" (sic.) groups. Marx, the bigot (he consciously and openly lied about and defamed Bakunin and anyone who wasn't a political elite) that he is actually reified these ideas with Engels in their texts on families. Today we earn TERF/GC viewpoints from this Marxist analysis, almost always exchanging sex (biological and eugenic) for class.
Anarchists:
I have been in anarchist collectives since 20 years, not a single one had these problems. Lifestylists get ostracised pretty quickly since the past few decades in most healthy groups, imo, or groups that pretend not to care about politics, but these latter groups are usually better defined as punks (cue Venn diagramm of overlap but no subsuming).
The queer and feminist turn has had a huge impact in most circles from my understanding, and people are still pushing these ideas, "anti-materialist perspectives" and "post-left" "prefigurative" politics are usually the kinds of things you see in good groups. Critiques of machismo and the inherent individualism in "DIY" are also very common in healthy groups. Healthy means, the group is not actively disintegrating.
The book of non-elitist essays "queering anarchism" has some nice perspectives on lots of this stuff.
"Conflict Play", "Theatre of the Oppressed" are the best way I have found for myself and the people I love to confront conflict shyness in any group, I honestly would never involve myself with another crew of friends or a business partner that would not enthusiastically engage with practicing and resolving and failing at conflict. Miming a lifestyle never get's us around conflict it just makes it wilder and less easy to deal with.

I guess I was mostly talking about historical anarchist movements, not so much modern ones today though I do still see problematic gender hierarchies develop in some organizations, it's definitely better now, though not entirely resolved. It's much better than in other groups. I mostly mentioned anarchists to discuss how pervasive it is, even in leftist anti-hierarchy organizing, these gender norms still manage to worm their way in.

Because, honestly, materialism is patriarchy for lots of "post-left" anarchists and part of the reason why we don't automaticalny lump ourselves with folks based on a unidimensional and materialist left-right access. Yeah I won't brush past how right-wing and fucked up that particular set of beliefs is ever. I have a lot of respect for certain folk traditions, you won't ever see me attacking grannies practicing Appalachian Folk Magic in the hills where they don't have reliable access to modern medicine, but Manifestation and all the other bullshit that sprung from The Secret and other new age grifts is doing active harm to people every single day and treating it with respect is disrespectful to human life.

I think we need to show the joy that is being in community with each other. I think we do the same thing saying, "Oh you're unhappy with xyz? Here's what we think! No time for hobbies? Share the workload with your community, many hands make light work! Tired of sexual harassment in the workplace? Unionize! Cost of living got you down? Sharing resources and a library economy helps save money on buying redundant things! etc."
The right just sells their ideology as a product to be consumed by insular people, I think that capitalism has seeped into people's minds that happiness can really be bought, if not only with money but with freedoms. I think we need to promote a lifestyle that isn't only anti-capitalist but shows what we would like to build instead. In times of strife it is easier to do because people are looking for alternatives and are more willing to consider change than when they are comfortable and happy.
I would like to say I did enjoy your essay and your presenting style. If I may make a critique though, it may help to edit either your scripts or your recordings a little more -- there were a handful of times where you repeated the same thing with different words one sentence after the other. Sometimes more is better and sometimes more is just more.

Well, the good news is the fashions aren't exclusively fascist, so we can still enjoy them. The bad news is, fucking fascists are everywhere and for every cool normal cottagecore creator there's a tradwife telling you to shove bleach up your child's ass to cure their autism and telling you everything bad in the world is your fault for not being a perfect traditional christian with twelve blonde children. A TON of queer women are super into hyperfemme fashions and usually when I see someone in cottagecore or hyperfemme styles I don't think "tradwife" or think anything heterosexual at all. In fact often these "tradwives" aren't even that good at the aesthetic. They're just pretty, young, white, and breasting boobily which is good enough for social media.

35:51 Anarchism is an ideology that is non-hierarchical in nature. If someone is enforcing patriarchy and leadership roles in their homes and community they are anarchist in name only. I don't doubt that this happens in real life but just wanted to comment on the hypocrisy of these people.
It's just an example of how pervasive this ideology that women are better at domestic tasks and naturally belong there is, it invades even the most progressive organizations and groups. Many people don't even realize they're doing this, they're not consciously thinking "the women will do the dishes" it just "naturally happens" because the men simply don't do it, and assume a woman will. It's so pervasive. It is hypocritical, but it's not uncommon. And it's very often not explicitly stated. This ideology infects all parts of our society and we must all actively fight against it. Everyone has some level of misogynistic beliefs they aren't necessarily aware of and must address, just by virtue of growing up in our culture.
Anarchism can only exist temporarily or with perfect ppl. And even tho ppl slot anarchy into a "left" category, libertarians are the closest thing to anarchy we see politically, and they're obviously extremely right leaning. The idea of anarchy came from like Tru communist ideas, but in practice it will always go into the hands of the right. Because rhey do selfish better. When the left says no rules, they mean you shoukd be able to live in a store as a home without paying 5000 to recode a piece of land as residential vs business. When the right says no rules, they mean it's now OK to marry and SA literal children. Anarchy will always be bastardized by the ppl who do selfish better

So much of this shows up in the homesteading community. It’s frustrating. I just want to trade tips and tricks about growing a garden that feeds my family. But at some point it tends to either lean hard right most likely Mormon or fundamentalist of some type prepper, or hard right libertarian or fascist.
I feel like it’s deeper than it even looks, as there are a handful who never mention religion or politics, but there are little tells and occasional dog whistles, with anti-science bs sprinkled in, and lots of talk of using herbs they grow instead of medicine, and anti vax nonsense too. That’s fine though. IMHO of you’ve got toxic ideals, keep them to yourself, I don’t want to hear about them.

Because around me, things are exactly the opposite. There is no tradwife movement anywhere. Being normal wives, not even trad ones, is increasingly losing popularity, particularly with the 4B movement gaining more and more steam.. and we were still agrarian society not so long ago, like we still see old women with their backs so curved due to hard labour they look like walking question marks, so the image of when we say "being a wife" seem to be completely different from those people who were born in a "1st world" nation.. Yeah absolutely! It's privileged cosplay generally, and the women who get sucked into the actual tradwife lifestyle are essentially trafficked into hard labor.
How about a future where you only work 2-4 hours a day contributing to meeting the needs of your community, a few hours a week contributing to the management of your community, and then whatever the fuck you want to do with the time you would be otherwise working to make someone else rich. We can't promise multiple income streams where you profit from the work someone else does, and we can't teach you new ways to exploit workers in the global south, but we can give you a path to a life where your needs are met without question and you will have the ability to do extra work for nicer things or whatever, but we will only do work that is needed to meet the needs of humanity and stop wasting resources and labor on garbage. But we also have to have conversations about the sins (if you will forgive the religious language) of our ancestors and how we well start trying to make amends. We may not be responsible for the kidnapping or SA of people from Africa, and we may not be responsible for the genocide of the indigenous peoples of this hemisphere, but even the white people who aren't rich are still implicitly supporting the white people who did benefit and continue to benefit from those crimes against humanity.
Also, I think Elon Musk's head on a pike is a great aesthetic, and even better if the right co-opts it. Then we can go for Bezos and let them take the lead there, too.
Sounds pretty good. I think we all have different ideas of utopia. Workers owning the things they make and benefiting from their own labor seems so obvious and natural when you de-couple it from your capitalist education and from the voice of the tiny capitalist in your head, but so many people can't do that.

It's not that being blonde is bad its that the far right use blonde babies as propaganda, thus associating them with Nazism. Being blonde is a neutral physical characteristic. But the alt right don't see it that way. There's a lot of ideas in the Nazi racial hierarchy ideology which put natural blondes at the top, which is why blondes are used in their propaganda. There's nothing wrong with being blonde at all.

Feelings occur in every human quite naturally.
I would add, feelings are more than a start, they have a given place throughout the whole process of being a political individual.
For example, you want to protect other people's rights both because you have empathy and care for them AND because you understand the benefits this brings to a society, it's a rational feeling.
Being angry at injustice is a start, but then you need to acquire knowledge on how this injustice works in order to do anything about it. Heck, even to check if there really is any injustice and it's not you feeling persecuted by imaginary enemies.
These two, feelings and understanding based on knowledge, are equally important.
A large number of people stay at feelings, they mistake them for an objective reality. Feelings are very easily manipulated, this is why populism is a thing and propaganda works so well.
And those who believe themselves to be driven by pure logic are nothing but feelings and the easiest to manipulate of all.
I hope Polyamory a Relationship Anarchy don’t go down this road, but they’re getting a lot of attention, so I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.

Within the first minute I was utterly horrified, but by 15 minutes I'm feeling better. If you're going in the direction I think you are . . . Yes. Whatever you do is impacted by who you are on the inside. If the inside is ugly, then whatever you do will turn ugly. It really shows why we need good education, because these trends are not philosophically consistent. If you can't see these inconsistencies, then it is incredibly easy to be sucked into them. It was very easy for me to see that the commitment to the relationship was all on the women's side. As bad as the old trad wife system was, at least it made it harder and more socially difficult for men to trade their wives in for a younger model after 15-20 years. This is noticeably absent from the current approach where the relationship is totally the responsibility of the woman and if the man isn't blissfully happy it's her fault and it's practically the man's duty to kick her out (because conservatives NEVER accept failure and incompetence).
On a more personal note, I was happy to see cottage core catching on, but only because I never got over liking shabby chic. I was just happy because I thought I might be able to wear a flowered dress again. Does this mean that I can wear things with flowers again, but I shouldn't???
You can wear whatever you want. Aesthetics aren't direct signifiers of ethics and morality (despite what I said about the hippies).

Yeah I didn't realize how bad it was until it was uploaded, it didn't sound that bad when I was editing and I'm not sure what happened. I used the same microphone and settings as always but it sounds way worse than other videos. Sorry about that!
Okay so I just went through the video again and the sound quality is much better in the last section which starts at around 23:34 where I get more into the tradwife movement and the far right. @@Trash-Garbage-Trashit sounded like the audio was clipping throughout the video. it usually happens when you have the gain set too high on your microphone while recording. it can also happen in post if you don't have a limiter on your audio.

Why so much hate? Tradwives is not a political movement. Sure, it is appealing to conservatives and right wingers, but it is just a style as any other that people of all ideas can enjoy. It is nonsense, like saying that living in a farm makes you republican. If someone wants to take this style seriously, that is their problem... but EVERTHING in social media is performative or "fake", not just tradwives, but also your channel and any other movement. For all of history also housewives have made money by tailoring or selling eggs. Selling a social media brand, therefore, does not make them "less traditional". The main disadvantage is dependence on husband, and yet many of these women make good money online. Beside, we now have life insurance, electric devices, and legal tools that make traditional life easier.
Ironic that you talk about "fascism" and "indoctrination" when for years we have been pushing feminism from early life to college, and yet we have not accepted that traditional and house life is a valid option as any other.
