From what I'd seen, I notice 3 possible scenarios with the termite queen: breathing, contractions, and possible "pushing". Laying 100s - 1000s eggs a day, I actually feel bad for her... unless if termites don't feel pain comparing to mammals.
Well, the queen and king are perfectly fine, I can assure you.You may want to know that the termites repaired the nest within 7 hours, give or take an hour, and there was actually no trace of any damage the next day!
I just borrowed her "time" for this video shoot and returned her safely to her nest after that. She and her spouse are fine, not to worry. I went to great lengths to ensure the queen and king were alright, and there was minimum impact!

She pulses so she can do two things, circulate blood and nutrients to all those eggs in her and to help pass the eggs through her genital tract.
I worked in a termite company a while back and they said that if you found one you had to catch it alive and you'd get payed the big bucks for one... Now that i see this, i don't think i would ever touch that huge thing, it's nasty!

She was nearly 4 inches long, and the pulsation is probably due to breathing.
