Marching Termite Trail
A long trail of marching termites extending for perhaps 40m (130 feet) spotted along a concrete footpath. These are nasute termites belonging to a species of Hospitalitermes and the workers are carrying balls of lichen in their mouths which they feed on. This is a huge colony and easily mistaken for ants!

Termite Tandem Running
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.6 лет назад
When male and female termite alates (flying termites) pair up, they shed their wings and the male starts following the female around, until she finds a suitable spot to start a new nest. This activity is called termite tandem running. Swarming Termites

Swarming termites around the lights of my guest room where I was staying. These termite swarmers (alates) came from colonies outside the resort area. www.termiteweb.com/how-a-termite-swarm-looks-like/
Macrotermes carbonarius trail
Просмотров 1 тыс.12 лет назад
A foraging trail of Macrotermes carbonarius in an oil palm plantation. These trails go in and out of the soil, and can extend very far out from their nest (mound). Soldiers guard the flanks of the trail, while busy workers move in the middle. Macrotermes carbonarius mainly feeds on dead leaves, grass, and branches on the ground surface. Be careful if you walk around with slippers when these lar...
Termites vs Ants.mp4

Here, you can see ants preying on termites that are foraging for food. The ants are weaver ants (genus Oecophylla) vs termites (Macrotermes carbonarius). The ants are opportunists and will wait for the right moment, hoping for some unsuspecting termites to wander close by and then they will pounce on them. This species of termite feeds mostly on dead twigs, branches, and dried leaves and will v...

Here is unedited footage of a termite queen from the Macrotermes genus. The termite queen is surrounded by her faithful workers who attempt to push her into the darker part of her royal chamber. Although she can't really move due to her size, at the end of the video, she has managed to "move" deeper into the darkness, as you can see, largely due to her worker's efforts in pushing and pulling he...

This video gives you a glimpse of the activity that happens when termites repair their nest from a slight damage. In this case, it is a Macrotermes species you are looking at, and you can see the fungus combs inside the nest as well. The soldiers stand guard against any intruding ants, of which there were a couple that tried to enter (on the right hand side), but were quickly repulsed. www.term...

This video shows the defense method of Coptotermes/Formosan subterranean termites. Once a breach occurs in their mud cover, soldiers take up position to form a phalanx behind the breach, and any intruder (like this piece of grass) gets bitten. The soldiers will secrete a sticky white liquid once they bite anything. www.termiteweb.com www.termiteweb.com/subterranean-termites/ www.termiteweb.com/...

These termites are Asian subterranean termites, often called "Formosan Termites" for convenience's sake, and are species from the genus Coptotermes. Many species of these subterranean termites can be voracious pests of wood and all wood products. Some species attack live wood in trees. Here, you get a glimpse of what goes on in their nests everyday; notice some tiny mites or springtails living ...

Termite attack! Nah, just kidding....But they do look like army ants..... A large termite column marching along a culvert. These termites are nasute termites which means the soldiers have nozzles on their heads which emit a chemical repellent that wards of predators like ants. The workers march in the middle and the soldiers guard the sides. These termites are on their way to their feeding grou...

From what I'd seen, I notice 3 possible scenarios with the termite queen: breathing, contractions, and possible "pushing". Laying 100s - 1000s eggs a day, I actually feel bad for her... unless if termites don't feel pain comparing to mammals.
