For like a tenner apiece, I feel like these guys surely represent some of the best value I've seen in a set of mainstream "kids' action figures" in a dog's age. In a world of 12" tall 5 POA Spider-Mans and Iron Mans, or little versions with one strap-on blast effect, these guys are nicely articulated, have lots of personality, and the extra accessories are a wonderfully cheap-and-cheerful way of adding in a ton of bonus play value. I was a little hesitant to pick them up because there's always the risk of it being a gateway and I do NOT need to be collecting other toylines, I've got too many Transformers as it is, but once I had 'em in hand any doubt was gone. Like you say, they're all you need!
Glad it's not just me that thinks that the action figures for actual kids are often pretty crap these days.
Hey, Mcfeely! Does it blow your mind bob budianski didn’t create these ?? 😂😂😂😂
And honestly with current action figures for the collector crowd don't have that same "toy" feel anymore. There's a lot I love out there right now, but I love me a good simple action figure. The mutanimals in the line are great too!!!
Playmates has just been knocking it out of the park in general. Their current Godzilla figures are 10 bucks and have pretty much the only accessories you could want - breath weapon blast effects or weapons. Their bigger things like the Titan Tech figures are really dumb fun too, and cost less than a Transformers Deluxe.
I have been tempted not because they're 10 bucks, but because you seem to actually get a really good value for your 10 bucks. I keep eyeing Bebop, Rocksteady, and Wingnut.
“The angry one” barely makes sense even in the movie. He’s not really short tempered, he’s just an adrenaline junky with way too much pent up energy and a passion for kicking ass
Packaging designer had Strong Bad on the brains
Those 'backup weapons' actually made appearances in the old B&W comics over the years. Love to see it!
So basically on the mask colors, the original comic had them all wearing red ones but when the cartoon and toys were being created they had to change the colors on everyone (except Raph) so that kids could tell them apart.
Yuo, exactly the same as with the Real Ghostbusters too.
also "a bunch of shinobi working as a group and being indistinguishable" is an execution of the bunshin no jutsu
Also so that parents wouldn't think they were buying their kids the same toy four times, which would leave unsold figures.
HE'S DIVERSIFYING HIS ASSETS AND WE LOVE THAT
You know, these remind me of the turtles they did for the 2012 show, with similar articulation and even VERY similar accessories for added play value. They even ran for about the same price, if I remember right. It delights me to see that they're about the same in value and quality over a decade later.
These guys are what nice cheap action figures should be. Some of the stuff you see out there for kids toy lines are dismal, barely passable, non-articulated tripe. The Mutant Mayhem lads are good stuff. Them new Godzilla toys are pretty rad too.
Thank you for reminding me the TMNT logo generator existed
Not gonna lie, the "give me a break" line made me laugh hard! Perfect timing and placement.
As much as I love Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is my go to favorite 80's franchise. I love anything you put out for your channel. Also 8:24 is called a Kusarigama which is Japanese for "chained sickle". Ninjas were farmers and used their tools as makeshift weapons.
meanwhile there are those Turtles figures as Gundam-esque giant mechs by HEATBOYS.
Picked up the Ooze Cruisin set in the box that is shaped like the turtle Van, love it as is, no need to even open it.
came here to shout this out too. All four turtles, the only way to get April that I’m aware of, and a Bebop to boot (I guess). Great value. Also snagged the glow-in-the-dark Target sets, which are likewise likely to live MISB on a shelf.
Bro, you're like a brother from another mother. Because at one point I too collected a few sets of the turtles, which I also displayed amidst my transformers collection... you sir are a kindred spirit, and it feels a bit like it justifies or legitimizes the random bits of my collection. Thank you Thew
I'm always fascinated by what people consider to be the correct listing order. One would think I'd also be in theme song camp by being exposed to it the most, but for some reason the order on the first NES game's pause screen stuck with me.
Same. For me it's always been the order of their maturity/age
You're welcome for not turning off the video 10 seconds in. You're welcome for not turning off the video 10 second in. :)
ssssshhhh hahahaaa
Why would anyone turn off Thew?
@@PhelesDragon I accidentally left in two takes of me saying that at the end 😭
@@toygrind oh snap I missed that. Ah well, it's not even in the video proper so no big. Thanks for still being around!
SO glad you picked these guys up, I've been having a blast with them! And for reference, Donnie's cell phone satchel can come off, as I learned when I accidentally did it and realized it had tabs specifically for it. It can go back on pretty easily!
Delighted to see Toygrind return, and I quetly hope we get to see tou branch out a little more often!
These versions of the Turtles are really enjoyable. The movie was a lot of fun and I dig the art style in it. It's only flaw is not being the absolute peak that Rise of the TMNT is. I may actually pick these guys up, I didn't realize they had so many accessories.
Never mind the original toys. None of them were as horrifying as Raphael's shadow covered eyes as he screamed in horror on discovering Splinter was missing in the 1990 movie.
Hell yeah dude toygrind lives!
Nice. 40 years of Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Ghostbusters and Terminator.
Only got Mutant Mayhem Wingnut so far (she’s my fave) and I’m impressed. Playmates clearly loved the TMNTMM designs and went all out with the sculpts and articulation. While Rise was an artistic marvel and a welcome hard reset after the 2012 show’s everything pizza approach, it wasn’t exactly the most toy-friendly. This film feels like it was designed to make the characters as toy-friendly and “retro-adjacent” as possible- and I’m okay with that.
When I think of "Wingnut" I think of the babby Razorwhip from [Dragons] RTTE 🤣
Also, I recently started Rise cuz I was curious. I'm not really a TMNT fan.
I literally had this moment when I collected all four turtles from the 2012 I think it was show where they all got a CGI makeover and drove around in a subway car with monster truck wheels. First time having all 4 in a set and very much like this iteration the engineering/articulation and diverse look of each character is very similar. Most of all they were fun, expressive and not all the same angry face turtle in different colors as the 80s toys were. Great to see more toy grind. Can we get an MOTU episode on the updated figures next? Picked up Skeletor and Hordac for $5 CND each and not only did they get better articulation but alternate head, and hands as well. That's wild.
I’m not sure if anyone has said this, but it’s always nice to see you cover things outside the Transformers realm.
While the algorithm is a cruel beast, know that the quality of your videos has not faltered even a smidge. You’re constantly putting out the best there is
Its nice Thew can hardly an outlet when he has Transburnout. Maybe we coukd see the return of Playgrind?
The Heat Boys TMNT Mecha figures are perfection.
Saw these on shelf yesterday, and the belt straps, the weapons on a sprue, omg all the 90s nostalgia ripped through me so bad. I love these little throwback touches to og cartoon figures
2:12 *2003 Same as it Never Was flashbacks*
This convinced me to pick up all four turtles when I had to swing by Target yesterday, and I now have them on my shelf. As someone who grew up with the 1980s TMNT, it’s nice to have the boys back in my collection.
Not gonna lie; I thought you were going to review those older turtles that transformed from normal turtles into the TMNT, but I have to say, this is just as good. Also, like Transformers, TMNT is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Cheers!
LOVED the break away from Transformers. I would VERY MUCH want more regular breaks and see you just check out something just geeky from you on occasion.
Fun video! Thank you! I gave the "Mutant Mayhem" a movie a go when it came to streaming, and was very much entertained. O' course, it was kind of unnerving to see Leatherhead called a "Ragin' Cajun Gator" on his new action figure card, only to have him played with an Australian accent in the film. Definitely needed more interdepartmental memos on that one.
I've given every TMNT iteration that I could find a try, and they've all got their good points and bad points, but if you just sit back, relax, and treat it like a "multiverse," the good stuff is thoroughly entertaining, whether it's amazing voice casting, nod-and-wink inside jokes that maybe three people will get, little background throwaway gags, a deep respect and loving tributes for the lore of what has come before, some excellent stories, some hilarious parodies . . . pretty much every iteration I've seen has SOMETHING you'll enjoy.
Can't wait to see what the shredder looks like in this artstyle
I do love the hell out of these 4 figures. They're SO good and simple and easy.
I really enjoyed the early 2000's toys. In fact that show was also really good too!
The teen girl squad reference (and spot-on voice impersonation!!) was the strongest warm snuggle of ultra nostalgia that I didn't even know I needed. Strong Bad will never not be a wonderful friend. Thanks, Thew. Burninating your way out of the hyper specificity. ;)
Love these guys, I actually modded the Chuck's on my Mike to have actual chains
Picked these up as well. Very fun toys. Love the more expensive stuff like Neca or Super7, but these figures are so bright and silly and affordable, I can't help but be stoked to have them on my desk.
It'd be ludicrous for me to try to keep up with every release of every TMNT line, so I mostly just stick to different iterations of Leatherhead. Having said that, Super7 got me a few more times, but not as much as I'd've liked, because budgetary reasons.
So glad to see another slice of Toygrind. I do fancy myself the occasional small serving of turtle goodness. Always had a fondness for the ones that stash the gear inside their shell.
I think another good selection of the 4 main turtles would be the full set of IDW Loyal Subjects figures. They are fun at a slightly larger scale.
3:09 a bit of 91% isopropyl alcohol should do the trick removing the labels on their legs 👍
Mine don’t even have it :S Maybe is a UK thing?
Nice to see Playmates seem to actually be putting effort in again after years of laziness with their toys. These and their Godzilla/Kong toys all look pretty good.
What makes this review even funnier to me is just how the "80s original" mikey is one of the 2003 mikey toys
Plus the fact that the alternate weapons for Donnie and Mikey he points out are just cooler are also the options that the 2012 show went with
Otherwise great review, nice to see a return of toygrind, look forward to whatever reviews come in the future!
Whelp, I went to Target and bought all four of them. I hope you're happy with yourself, sir!
Love this video. As a TMNT fan from when I was knee high to a Shredder, it's so nice to see how clean and evocative these action figure are! Keep up the good work Thew!
Great Vid Thew!! I hope to see more Toygrind!! It’s good stuff
I've been a TMNT fan since about 2006, so this was the perfect way Thew could've introduced the franchise to Toygrind. Short of him reviewing the new He-Man crossover Shredder, anyway.
guilty gear and soulcalibur acknowledged
Hallethewiah! Return of Toygrind after long hiatus!
And better time this to come in yesterday which was leap day.
I literally just got Donatello from this line as an impulse buy. These are really fun
I’ve wanted these but didn’t know they had decent articulation. Now I want them
omg that "from character" bit awoke an uncomfortable number of memories
I actually kinda felt the same way about the turtles. I got the 4 brothers, Splinter, Shredder... and I was done. Completely satisfied with my collection. Transformers on the other hand... I'm at 4 shelves 2 boxes and counting.
Thewnage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Tmnt mutant mayhem was a radical time watched it twice for my bd. Then after the second viewing, I bought the whole set, absolutely no regrets, I felt like I was a child again full of joy and pizza.
I traded in a copy of Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles on the NES to the local branch of CEX last year, none of the staff were old enough to remember when we couldn't have ninjas on the telly. 😂..... 😭😭😭😭😭😭
These guys are just fun. I have a bunch of turtles figures, and these guys just hit the right balance for me! Love the vid!
You have no idea how much you made my
Morning. Seeing tmnt on your page. You know there are some transforming vintage turtles. If you didn’t live across the bay I’d send them. But they also have these new ones. Some are blocks that transform. I believe they also transform into the party wagon. Thanks Thew! Keep the bangers coming!
To be fair, my Raph toy from my youth (still have him) does in fact transform. From a ninja turtle, to a... regular turtle.
Similarly I never really had Turtles toys as a kid but bought into these thanks to their great quality and wonderful pricing.
I have the four and Splinter (big Jackie Chan fan) and the only complaint I have is they do not like to stand - they do have peg holes in their feet though so have gotten a pal to 3D print some bases so I can display them and trust I won't be picking them up off the floor every day.
to be fair, Leo basically coming with a "parrying dagger" is actually kinda neat of an idea?
Playmates makes a damn good affordable action figure.
Original bandanas were all red, the colors were added so you could tell them apart in the 90s cartoon reboot. Didn't mean anything; it was just suppose to 'conceal their identities' while they did ninja things. Didn't say it made sense.
Always love Toygrind episodes!
Man those turtles comes with a lot. I didn't know you get baby turtles and extra weapons.
Had me at Donatello being a tech bro that wouldn't pay for Twitter
Michaelangelo in medieval armour, nobody wants that.......I WANT THAT, I love those turtles, like walkabout the mutant kangaroo!
This was such a wonderfully wholesome vid!
I would've loved those as a kid
I figure this video probably paid Thew's rent for a few months.
I am here for this. Based on your shirt, how about looking at some Thundercats. Hooooooo!!
10:03 I'm doing the same thing with Batmobiles rn and honestly theyre starting to take up to much shelf space...
I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be a new episode of Toygrind and I'm glad it was these radical dudes. I love the rack of extra weapons a la the 80s figures. The whole movie feels like a callback with just about every notable mutant from the franchise.
Was not expecting thew to mention Seung Mina😎
I'm assuming Splinter gave them the masks because he couldn't tell them apart, using the Ninja name as an excuse.
Best video for a long time.
THURTLESDAY!!!! YEAH!!!!
Well done for getting that burnout off of you.
Hell yeah! I also picked up these guys when they came out. Not a huge tmnt fan but the movie was great.
Shit I had a similar feeling of joy when I got all the Turtles from the 2012 show. Just nice having all four bros with no additional gimmicks, look very nice next to my assortment of DC, Marvel and the one McFarlane Leetha 7K Spawn toy that isn't locked in a dramatic pose with useless joints.
This was awesome
8:25 AXL LOW GUILTY GEAR MENTIONED!!!
Bandanas are name and colour coded.
Raphael is Red. Obvious.
Leonardo is Light Blue.
Donatello is Dark Purple.
Michaelangelo is Mmmorange...?
Ok, there's almost a joke here?
Hey those goofy themed turtles are awesome! They're as fun as they are silly. Just like you!
Thank you thew, for using rizz in a way that doesn't make me hate life...
Oh lovely, I didn't know the movie line reproduced the classic sets so faithfully
I loved the movie, and you've convinced me to at least buy a Mikey and Donnie. They look like so much fun!!!
Honestly Thew, you should consider giving the NECA Univeral Monsters/TMNT figures a go. I absolutely love the crap out of mine. Mummy Mikey and Frankenstein Raph are my favorites.
i'd watch more of these personally
Loved this review. I'd love to see your take on the Turtles of Grayskull.
Loved it
8:25
WAIT, THEW KNOWS GUILTY GEAR ???
Maybe you can do a review on the tmnt of 2003 and 2012
Nice one lad 🤘
Thew a primarily-Transformers channel, in a Ninja Turtles review, dropping a reference to Axl Low from Guilty Gear, it's like all my interests had a car crash! But a good kind.
I need a full set of these, got Leo and Splinter, but I need the rest of the gang. The only complete set I have are the Mutators that go from pet turtle to ninja teen in a few flips. I picked up the retro figures, but sadly Donnie was forever out of stock, recently I even picked up an Amazon exclusive 4 pack, that I need to buy another 4 pack to get the complete team.
The figures of their ugly baby designs are also great, but entirely superfluous.
Great....now I want some ninja turtles...
These look pretty fun! Great review 😊
If you haven't, give the IDW TNMT books a look. They're so good shit and a fun read.
I haven't read a lot of what IDW has published, but I've liked everything I've read.
@Beedo_Sookcool I'm up to volume 4 of the collected books I think. Just finished the City Fall arc and it's been a good time. I'm not a huge comic guy, but these have been some entertaining.
