My experience on their differences has been that multiple hubs can be connected to a dock but multiple docks can’t be connected to a hub. So for example, if I want to expand the total number of TB4 ports, I could connect multiple OWC TB4 hubs to the OWC dock but not the other way around. At least that’s been my experience so far.
Thank you. One thing I am struggling with is that almost every thunderbolt hub advertises its ability to run "dual 4k monitors at 60hz" but none make any mention of a single 4k monitor at 120hz. Is there some technical limitation preventing this support, or is it generally supported and just not mentioned?
Hello John, looking at our Specs Page for the Thunderbolt (4) Hub I do see listed: or one 4K display @ 120Hz So you should be able to run a single 4K at 120Hz, but I believe that would be the upper limit, anything further would be 60Hz.
There is so much fake news out there. I do not recommend a powered Doc, as it can not power the monitors properly and seems to crash with it's defective drivers - software. The monitors go black and you have to keep restarting. It's to hard for a Dell or HP powered Docking station. Get the Thunderbolt 3 Travel Dock from sabrent. It does not have the defective drivers that the Dell and HP powered docs have. The little Sabrent non powered doc is powering two 4k screens with no issues. I think one 4K at 120 HZ and 1 4K at 60 Hz. So this little doc will power one 4 K at 100 Hz.
The main advantage is that a Thunderbolt Dock or Hub has Thunderbolt ports instead of USB-C. Thunderbolt while it shares the same physical port as USB-C is far more powerful and allows you to do a lot more stuff, such as faster data transfer, charging, daisy-chaining, powering displays, and more. While USB-C is useful, it still cannot do nearly as much stuff as Thunderbolt, so it is limited in functionality.
Any recommendation for a hub or dock that can allow me to connect: usb dongle, headphone dongle, HDMI for the monitor, USB cable keyboard and if possible, the USB C power cord of my laptop. With my current hub, if I connect everything the sound quality (input and output) is very bad, and I have to connect the headset dongle to the laptop. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, maybe I am asking too much for a hub/dock to do.
Thank you, this was very informative. You answered most of my questions. I have one more though Would the dock featured in this video add display alt mode capability to a phone that does not have it? As in, could I connect this to my phone and then connect the monitor via the dock through the other usbc port? Thanks!
I do apologize, while some of our docks are compatible with phones that have a USB-C connection, it will not allow them to connect a monitor to that device.
Had OWC for two years, not a power user. Used for music studio, USB 2 audio interface, monitor. MIDI peripherals etc. The USB 3.2 used as main audio connection has just packed in. OWC support say it's hardware. No repair service in the UK and just out of warranty. Really disappointing at this price. Customer support were great but can't do a thing or advise where to take it to have what I'm guessing will be an expensive fix. Avoid.
Audio connection, and especially midi, just need USB 2 data rates. USB 3.2 can refer to the simple/original 5Gbps USB (3.0), 10Gbps (3.1), 20/40Gbps (3.2 x1/x2)
I’d say dock cause that gives more power and that’s the exact thing that brought me here. My audio interface give off a lot of white noise due to lack of power
Hi Michael! Check with Twelvesouth to see if the StayGo will work through a hub or adapter. There's nothing unique to the TB4 Hub that will prevent the StayGo from working.
Thanks for the video. But a huge difference is that a hub generally duplicates the same signal into 2 or 3 port. That means if you plug 2 monitors to a hub, it will duplicate the same display output on all screens. I see misleading sellers marketing hubs like dock stations. For example a computer with only one USB C display port, can generate 3 new ports and you can plug 3 monitors on the docker and have each screen displaying it own output from other

Can the TB4 "Hub" be connected to a TB4 "Dock" to further expand the number of available TB4 ports? So I'm trying to connect multiple external SSDs which are in TB4 enclosures. My PC has a single TB4 port. Connected to that TB4 port I have a TB4 "Dock" which has (2) TB4 ports. I would like to connect the OWC Hub to one of the Dock's TB4 ports, thus increasing my total number of TB4 ports to 4 (3 on OWC Hub + 1 still available on the Dock). I was hoping the video would have covered this scenario. Thanks!
@@poweredbyowc Thank you for your response. As I understand from Intel TB4 specs I can expect anywhere from 18-22Gbps of total bandwidth data transfer for my SSDs. Hello! We have a dock that might be a great fit for your needs - the Thunderbolt Go Dock. You can check it out here: eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TB4DKG11P/ Thunderbolt Go Dock. It includes an HDMI port, 3 USB-A ports, and an Ethernet port. While you could use two separate hubs, we recommend connecting them to different sides of the Mac to ensure they’re on separate Thunderbolt buses for optimal performance.
Theoretically Yes, you can connect an SD card to the SD card port and a hard drive to the USB port on the OWC Thunderbolt Dock or Thunderbolt Hub. You will be able to transfer files between the SD card and the hard drive directly through your computer, as the dock or hub will recognize both devices. However, the transfer will still be managed by your computer's operating system.

There is no indication that this situation would cause any sort of Data corruption on your drives unless they are constantly being disconnected during use. The only likely thing to happen is a possible slowdown of speed with multiple devices connected at once.

Great Video!! So I have an older Macbook pro (2015) with 2 USB-A ports. I have 2 cameras. A canon 90D DSLR as my main, and a logitech c920 as my overhead (using Camlink 4k). These work great with ECAMM thanks to your videos. My problem lies with the Rodecaster Pro II that I'll be adding to my studio. Given that I only have 2 USB-A ports that I'm already using for my two camera inputs, I'll be forced to eliminate the overhead USB cam to make room for the Rodecaster Pro USB audio input. I'm aware that I could run audio from the Rodecaster (monitor out) 1/4 inch to 3.5mm into my Cannon, and then into the Mac via HDMI to Camlink/USB-A. This would leave me with the second USB-A port availible, however everything I've seen suggests that running audio out of the Rodecaster and into a camera mic input isn't the best way to go. This is why I'm considering going with an ATEM Mini Pro I could combine both cameras (TAO converter tor USB cam) into the ATEM mini and into my Mac and then the Rodecaser into the second USB-A port via USB-C/USB-A adapter. I was just hoping you could shed some light on what OWC product is available (hubs, docs) that would allow me to use muliple cameras (4 max) with the Rodecaster Pro II and Ecamm. I'm not ready to upgrade my Mac yet so making my Mac Ports limitations (2 USB-A, 2 thunderbolt-2, 1 HDMI) work has been difficult to get info on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have the Pro Version of Ecamm Live and i love it. -Blessings
PLEASE make a Thunderbolt 4 dock with legacy firewire connection (I have the TB3 version, but need to upgrade to TB4). There is literally not 1 TB4 dock with firewire, many need that for their audio interface or other legacy purposes...
Correct there are, but Microsoft has all but discontinued the use of Firewire with the release of Windows 10 OS. We realize that there are other OS options for PC but based on what is the most popular in the future machines that is going to be USB-C and Thunderbolt connections and not Firewire.

Is a thunderbolt doc better than a USB doc? I'm getting a new iMac and want something for internet connection, additional USB and thunderbolt ports and an SD card slot. What is your recommendation?
If you are getting a new iMac, I would recommend Thunderbolt. While physically they look the same, Thunderbolt is a much more powerful port than USB-C as it has both the capability of charging, but better data transfer speeds, allows for daisy-chaining, better display support, and more. I would recommend our Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 Dock. The 7 year old PC's motherboard is an MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon.
Thanks
You should have no issues keeping our Thunderbolt 4 dock or hub connected to your PC continuously. Just note that if your PC only has a USB-C port, the dock will operate at USB speeds rather than Thunderbolt speeds, and some features might be limited based on the capabilities of your host port.

Thanks.

I hope to upgrade to a new PC in the near future.
What you just said causes me to think, to get 5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s on USB devices, it would be best to connect the hub to a Thunderbolt port on the PC that has a bitrate of 20 to 80 Gb/s.
I'm not seeing any AMD motherboards that mention Thunderbolt in their specs.
Does Intel licence its Thunderbolt technology to anything related to AMD?
We do apologize, we are not able to answer that question for you. We would recommend reaching out to Intel or AMD for that inquiry.
-Blessings
We do have a Thunderbolt dock with a Thunderbolt 2 adapter that offers (4) USB-A ports on the back.

Does this work PC or is it only apple
Our docks will work for both PC and Mac!
PLEASE make a Thunderbolt 4 dock with legacy firewire connection (I have the TB3 version, but need to upgrade to TB4). There is literally not 1 TB4 dock with firewire, many need that for their audio interface or other legacy purposes...
Regrettably, there is not likely going to be a TB4 dock that also has firewire as Apple removed the ability to use Firewire with the newer OS.
@@poweredbyowc There are like a billion PC users too....
Correct there are, but Microsoft has all but discontinued the use of Firewire with the release of Windows 10 OS. We realize that there are other OS options for PC but based on what is the most popular in the future machines that is going to be USB-C and Thunderbolt connections and not Firewire.
Can you recommend a hub or a solution that has a Thunderbolt 2 input /output (used with my G Technology 4TB external drive) and SD card input.that works with high speed SD cards..(my 2013 iMac has built in ports for these connectors and I am looking at buying a M3 iMac.
Unfortunately, we don't carry any docks/hubs equipped with Thunderbolt 2 ports. All of our docks have either Thunderbolt 3 or 4 ports.
Anyone still left around this comment, can you tell me if a docking station(targus to be specific) is my remedy to mirror my phone to non smart tv? No wifi, no subscription, just plug and play. I don't like latency from bluetooth and wifi. Mhl support is a pain to find, so my mhl cable is becoming less useful
Take a look and see what you think ( eshop.macsales.com/shop/docks#drive-docking-stations:multi-port-dock,primary-connection:thunderbolt-3%29
But a powered doc makes it very hard to start up the computer. It's a total bust. Better to just get a Hub. That way you do not have the major starting issue
As prior service military, I can say that we have very similar friends. 😂🤣😂🤣
Docks: All-in-one, less ports
Hubs: Requires more setup but more ports and customization options when in use.
Can I stream through the dock Netflix too my Mac air m2. Netflix block it I want to Be able to download on my iPhone to Netflix and screen share when I have no internet
Unfortunately, that won't be possible with either our hubs or docks.
Why do i only find videos like AFTER i already bought the wrong item 🤣
Btw, video is under-exposed
P.S. Thats not "style", that an mistake
what's up with the lighting in this video lol
So basically a dock allows you to connect something which doesnt have the right port type for your main computer
Do you need externsl power for a dock on Imac M1???
No one really explaining that .
I.m thinking « no «!
Macbook pro w M1 , yes , because of the battery .
Am I wrong or right ?
Thanks for this video and if anyone knows the external power supply question on an Imac , please explain it for me like I,m a 5 year old kid .
Love mac 🎼🎼🎼🎵🎵🎙️🙏🏻❤️👍🏻
I apologize if I misinterpret your question. Most of our docks come with an external power supply and are not powered by the Mac itself.
Bro accidentally used the wrong setting on his beard trimmer
tf happened with the moustachio my friend
I don't own a Mac...
That's okay! We have docks that are compatible with PCs as well!
It looks like half his mustache is cut off lol
he lost it in the war, the mustache war
I mustache you a question
This video could be over in 7 seconds: 0:26 - 0:33
Now I know how to make my wife listen to me. Just cut off a quarter of my mustache.
Blackout due to thunderstorms 😂
What would happen if i conenct mu laptop to an HDMI cable and then connect a usb type c hub to the laptop that has its own hdmi slot and what if i connect another hdmi to it? Wouldn't this hub overload the computer or like stress it out. If i have 10 things plugged into the hub which is connected to one port?
Lights, lights, lights
A dock has a power charger its big, a hub is bus powered is small, period.
I won't get any buzzz
Winona Locks
The difference? 30Hz.
Between the colored patches and the missing section of mustache it’s time to burn the whole beard down and start over.
I am sorry, I cannot focus because of the --- , 🙂
What happened to your moustache?
Roob Land
I'm going blind.
