    Hello Jon, I'm really new to using toon boom and I really appreciate your videos. At 15:00 you talk about making a blank drawing and adding 3 drawings to that drawing. Can you explain in more detail how to do that, I'm really new to the program Thanks.

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  7 лет назад +1

      Hello. Basically, in the timeline create a new drawing layer within the eye group and name it 'Master_Eye_Peg'. Then on that layer create three empty drawing frames (button just above the timeline). In the camera view you can then use the Pivot tool to add a pivot point to the blank drawings (based on the eye drawings). Make sure this layer is the highest layer in the eye hierarchy and then that will control the whole eye. I hope that makes sense.

    I've been using ToonBoomStudio since about 2008 and decided to upgrade but only to essentials since that's all I need, and it's a lot more affordable. The frustrating thing is that I can't import any of my past drawings and the thought of having to rerig them all is daunting. Still, the real problem is trying to figure out how to use the software and I have a feeling that the version you're demonstrating has a lot of things in it that mine doesn't.

      I hit this problem too. Studio was a different animal and the only thing they have in common that I found, is PDF format. Which sounds weird as h to me, but it preserves the vector description? Ulgh at exporting each drawing layer as PDF and reassembling.
      I toyed with the idea of seeing if I could teach Automator to do this for me. Truth is, this remains unsolved.

    Great video!
    To be honest, frame by frame character turns done the old fashioned way and in programs like Flash, for example, can really make this look so fantastic if you have a good grasp and practice in making them in those software's too. I learned animation and traditional drawing since i was a kid and followed through with it all through college and I try to get proficient at in in as many software's as possible. It makes you that much more employable. Harmony 15 is like a mash up of Flash animation processes, Autodesk's Maya/3ds MAX rigging setups and Node use, and Sketchbook Pro/Photoshop's tools all in one great program. I find it super easy to get into rigging and scripting, as it allows me to make the software do what I want it to do, not just what it is by default designed to do. Sure, it's a laborious, but, If you get proficient at scripting and rigging then you can even put together plugins and other scripts that can help you automate these tasks (which I have yet to try in Harmony).

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  6 лет назад +1

      Hello, thanks for your comment. I agree, you can't beat a traditional head turn but the more advanced Harmony gets (particularly in version 14) it's getting easier and easier to do with a rigged character and even faster). Having both skills will come in handy and give you even more flexibility.

      For the hands you need to draw diferent poses (such as you do with the mouth )

    • @andrewkful
      @andrewkful 6 лет назад

      You draw different hand/foot/mouth/etc drawings on the same layer, and then use the transition timeline in the Library window on the right to set each frame to each drawing. You can also turn them into Symbols to do the same thing.

    • @mrjontaylor

      This is why ToonBoom pipelines hire people to do JUST the rigging, since it's so time consuming and requires so much understanding and thought. It astounds me that all this is required for something that seems very easy and simple to do as a turn-around.

    Hi, i've got a question, so if i want to create MOUTH drawing substitutions FOR EACH POSE(side, front,3/4) where shout i put them? i mean.. in the timeline... if in the MOUTH LAYER i dont have space to put bunch of drawings just for the FRONT view, because in the frame number 2 is the Drawing of the SIDE view! , or i just need to separate the FRONT, SIDE and 3/4 views in like for example.. 5 frames each, to be able to put my drawing substitutions? hope you understand the question.. thanks!

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  6 лет назад

      You draw them in the timeline. Spread out the poses so that each one lasts around 10-15 frames, then create new frames on the mouth layer and draw the mouth shapes for each pose. Same goes for hands, eyes, feet etc..

    • @wyattbrenner5861
      @wyattbrenner5861 4 года назад

      @@mrjontaylor Hi Jon, new to Toon Boom and your channel! I made a character following this video and am trying to now do what you discussed here. I have spread out each pose by about 15 frames, and left the frames in between each pose blank - is that the correct thing to do, or do I extend the exposure of each drawing for each pose to fill those gaps to create 15 full figures? And if i do extend everything, when I draw substitutions do I just clear the layer I want to create a substitution for and draw one?
      Also, after drawing substitution body parts (hands, mouths, etc.) for each pose, how do i actually switch between them on each master pose when animating a character? I guess I just dont really understand how to animate this rig, especially with substitutions.
      Any help would be much appreciated, thanks so much for the repository of knowledge you've shared.

    Hey Jon! Nice work, just had a question about your methods with pivots. You create a blank drawing to move the pivot location for a turnaround, but what about things like hands, where they cycle through and you'd want to keep them all in the same place? Would you not draw them all 'in place' and move the peg to the correct position on the rig? I know this causes issues with the reset transformation option (R shortcut), but I'm just wondered how you'd achieve that some of 'pieces cycle through in place' without it.
    I hope that makes sense!

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  7 лет назад

      Ok, I hope I have understood you properly.... basically you create a blank frame for each pose and set a pivot on each. Create hands for each pose. All the hands for each pose will then default to the blank frame pivot. You just need to make sure you have the right blank frame selected for each pose so the hands don't 'pop' out of position when you switch.
      Does that help?

    • @AdamOliver52
      @AdamOliver52 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Jon! I was interested in how you tackle the pivot issues, so that's interesting to hear you use the blank drawing method. I animate with only key info on the pegs, and nothing on the drawings, sending drawing pivot info up to the peg if you see what I mean. Just realising how hard it is to discuss Harmony via written messages! Keep up the good work :)

      I'm scrolling looking for answers and your comment is a year old. did you find an answer? what I get is that the peg pivot follows the drawing pivots in a way that it changes position everytime another drawing sub comes along? idk i'm not sure about this and I don't have harmony to test it out

    • @colinmcquaid7615
      @colinmcquaid7615 4 года назад

      @@angeloboose When you push the drawing layer pivot to the parent peg as instructed in the video the peg will have the same pivot point as the drawing layer. However from what I understand this only works for the peg immediately above the drawing layer. If you add an additional peg above the original peg of the drawing layer its pivot point will automatically revert to the centre of the drawing stage. To ensure you have the same pivot point you create a blank drawing as Jon did here with the same pivot as your original artwork layer. This new layer pushes its pivot up to the new peg. I've seen what I think is an easier way to do it which is to copy and paste the original artwork layer and attach it to the new peg. Because it's a clone of the original layer it will feed the same pivot point up to the new peg. I'm new to Toon Boom and this wrecked my head for a few weeks so I hope that helps.

    absolutely no need to draw it all together and then slowly cut everything out, and clean it up

    I have made an entire character and used him in one scene. Now I want him farther back in another scene using my same rigs and drawings, except when I try shrinking him it shrinks him in every other drawing up to that point. I did the duplicate drawing shortcut but it still won't make it seperate. Please help.

      +Kiah Johnson Are you creating every scene in the same file? Make sure you are using the Transform tool when scaling which should create a keyframe and not alter what went before.

    To save time, can the same rig be used, making minor adjustments for creating many characters.?

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  7 лет назад +1

      +Tony Martinez Technically you could wipe the frames and re draw a new character within the rig. You would have to reset all the pivots etc.. Personally I find it easier to start from scratch, which eliminates a lot of issues that arise from trying to use an old rig for a new character.

    • @quasima2nez
      @quasima2nez 7 лет назад

      Jon Taylor thanks for reply. As a beginner, do you recommend starting with the most basic version of toonboom and work up from there by upgrading as I hopefully progress?

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  7 лет назад

      It really depends on your budget and requirements. If you're just starting out and doing personal projects then the basic version will be fine until you get your head around it. If your looking at doing professional jobs, and can afford it, then Premium is the way to go.

    Why does your line art need to be separated from your color art ? Is it impossible to rigg without that ?

    • @mrjontaylor
      @mrjontaylor  2 года назад +1

      You can rig without separating the layers but it helps with the more advanced rigging techniques.

      You have to connect the sleeves to the deformer using a "KinematicOutput" Node. Hope that helps.

    This video is quite outdated. This is NOT how you rig in Harmony. Rigging is actually not complicated once you understand the hierarchy of creating a rig.
