    Good morning, TechnologyMafia!
    I bought yesterday Sigma 18-35f1.8 + MC-11 and Sigma USB Doc for Sony A6000.
    I am very happy.
    But you need to take the time and do the calibration, I advise, I spent 6 hours today to adjust the lens to a millimeter. To make the lens sharp at all focal lengths, correction via USB Doc is required.
    As someone is lucky, who immediately with the packaging is an excellent lens, and who needs a little adjustment.
    By the way, you TechnologyMafia lens a little misses on the focal length of more than 2m and infinity, a little correction and everything is fine!
    Autofocus works. All perfectly!
    I want to share information and problems with which you will meet with 18-35 and other big lenses including even Sony:
    1. The lens is large and it overlaps the AF illumination, so more than half the frame, including the middle of the frame, overlaps the lens shadow.
    Therefore, the AF backlight will not work.
    2. The lens is large and the flash will not work either, a shadow is formed in half the frame. You need an external flash.
    3. If you buy an external flash, the flash will also not work AF backlight, on all mirrorless cameras like Sony a7 *, a6 * 00 it does not work!
    It's a pity.

    I just wanted to say that I greatly appreciate your videos. I had my first son just over 6 months ago, which caused me to have my initial camera fever. I upgraded from an older point and shoot to the Sony A6500 with the Sigma 30 mm F1.4 lens to start off with, and bought the Sony Carl Zeiss 55 mm F1.8 for portraits a couple weeks ago too. Regardless I just wanted to say I greatly appreciate the time, effort, and quality you put into all your videos. I was a Mechanical Engineering major but love how to mix in practical application with sample shots. Keep up the good work!

    Did you end up keeping this lens??? I was torn between many options (incluiding de Sony 35mm f1.8) but ended up going for this gorgeous sigma 18-35. Though certainly big and heavy, for me the image quality and minimum focus distance made it worth it. I'm loving the combo so far!

      I have both. With the latest firmware on the MC-11, autofocus on the Sigma 18-35 is very good except for the autofocus noise. I use the Sony more because it's lighter, silent AFC and smaller.

    Working pro for 30 years. Dozens of lenses over the decades. The Sigma 18-35 is simply the sharpest zoom I've ever owned, and it is actually sharper than many primes. It really is like having a "bag of primes." The autofocus can be wonky, but I managed to get my copy to focus just fine using the micro adjustments in my (Pentax) bodies. Others may need to go even further with the Sigma USB Dock. BTW, it focuses perfectly every time using manual or live mode (many reviewers have noted this). Buy it!

    So, I'm between Sigma 30mm 1.4 and Sony 50mm 1.8 (just because the Sony 35mm is far too expensive for my budget) and I don't really know what to do. I mean, I really like the Sigma, but I'm a bit scared because the missing OSS. Does it means that I will have to use a tripod everywhere I go? I use an a6000 so I don't have in body OSS...

    I use the a6500 with the 18-35 Sigma for woodland and landscape with the La-ea3 adapter. I am extremely pleased with its performance. But not a good combo for travel or fast action. The only e mount aps c which is comparable in sharpness and iq is the 24 f1.8 Zeiss, which is also a superb lens.
    Keep up the good work!

    Hi, nice video, thanks for this comparison. I have a question that I already posted in another video but it wasn't answered. Did you switch off the in-camera auto corrections and the auto lens correction in Lightroom? Since the Sony raw files have correction info embedded (if that is activated in the Sony camera used for taking the photos) the files you are watching in Lightroom are not what the lens is producing optically. If the auto correction is activated the Sony already has kind of an editing and that would heavily influence the comparison. I think either you have to switch off all auto corrections for the Sony files or you have to use Lightroom correction settings for optimizing the Sigma files too. Thanks again and kind regards!!!

    Overall, Sigma 18-35 or Sony 18-105? and if you HAD to travel with only one lens what would it be? I have the Sony 18-105 now and while the focal length and auto-focus is useful, I miss the bokeh/low-light and possible sharpness the Sigma 18-35 can provide.
    Thanks in advance as always! You are the sony lens authority! haha.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 лет назад +5

      The 18-105 is a more versatile lens. If I had to choose only one, that is the one I would pick. The 18-35 is sharp and great in low light, but falls short in auto focus, for video (due to focus noise) and is bigger, heavier, and more limited. If you take a portrait at 35mm F1/.8 and compare that to a portrait at 105mm F4, you would be surprised at how good the 18-105 will look.

  • @Legendaley
    @Legendaley 7 лет назад

    TM, other reviews have said that external mics catch the AF noise greater than the camera's internal mic. What is your response?

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 лет назад +1

      I agree - the noise comes from the lens, and because the lens is so long, a shotgun mic such as a Rode videomic will pick up more of the noise.

  • @vessk000

    You should compare it in RAW, without any post processing!
    P.S. Once I had A6300 + MC-11 + Sigma 18-35 and there were focus errors. Almost everytime the Sigma back focused, it should be calibrated and after that, you will have consistent sharp results!!
    P.S.2 I love your lens reviews after all.

  • @simkin8698
    @simkin8698 6 лет назад

    Wow, this is an awesome review. It just so happens that a few days ago I decided I might want to pick up that Sigma lens. I thought the idea of a very sharp zoom lens with such a wide open aperature would be very useful. But I already own the Sony 35mm f1.8, and also a 7artisans 25mm f1.8. I was kind of hoping the Sigma would be considerably better all around compared with the Sony. But after seeing this, I realize that in reality, the difference in quality between the two doesn’t justify the $1000 price tag. I think I’d be better off picking another lens completely, like maybe the Sony 18-105, or a Robinson 50 and 80mm f1.8 for the same price total.

  • @patrickwhitehead
    @patrickwhitehead 7 лет назад +1

    I know you like to shoot wide open but my 35mm is significantly sharper stopped down slightly to f2.0 or better still f2.2 which is still fast and produces nice bokeh. It also reduces the purple fringing which is pretty severe at f1.8. I'm not knocking Sigma, I have the 30mm f1.4 and 60mm f2.8 and like them both but for me the A6000 with the 35mm F1.8 on it is the ultimate combination.

    • @patrickwhitehead
      @patrickwhitehead 7 лет назад

      Both are excellent lenses but it's usually the 35mm that I pick up, it's smaller and lighter and just 'fits' the A6000 better - the Sigma is possibly better optically but I prefer the Sony. I've not used either with a gimbal but I would imagine the Sony is better balanced with the camera.

    Hi there! I have been watching your videos for a long time and love how your channel has grown! Well Done! - If i could ask a request, I would ask that you review a Zhyongi Lens Turbo ii (speedbooster), with some manual lenses! The Speedbooster increases your field of view by x0.72 and adds a stop of light to your image. (effectively producing a near identifical image to that produced on a Full Frame).
    They have a wide array of adapters (FD-NEX) , (EF-NEX) and so on..
    Would love to see some comparisons with the optics from such combos.

      It depends - I guess my experience with the LA-EA4 made me lose faith in the LA-EA3's abilities. The MC-11 is a cool adapter because you can adapt Sigma and many Canon lenses, so i view it as a dual-purpose adapter.

      I would rank them: Sigma, SEL50F18, then the FE50mm. 30mm is more usable than 50mm, Sigma is sharper. The FE 50mm is a pretty bad lens from what I read, but the slow and loud autofocus is enough to not make me want to buy that lens.

    I have the Sigma 18-35 1.8 A mount and use a Sony LAEA3 adapter.....I had the Sigma 18-35 1.8 Cannon mount with the SIgma MC11. I am using the Sony A6500.
    Here is what I found......
    As this video shows, focus with the Canon mount and the MC11 is not up to accurate and fast focus. It is good...don't get me wrong.....but after selling the Canon mount and the MC-11......and buying a Sigma 18-35 Sony A mount lens and the LAEA3, things got way better.
    The combination of the LAEA3 and the SIgma 18-35 Sony A mount lens, really turns up the focus capability. Much faster and more accurate.
    I will be buying soon the Metabones Sony A mount to E mount Speedbooster Ultra. I hear good things about that adapter and the Sigma A mount version of the 18-35.
    I love my LAEA3 and my LAEA4 Sony adapters.....the 4 is great for using the old Minolta autofocus lenses. But from some of the reports I have been reading, the Metabones A to E Speedbooster really turns up the image quality and the abilities of this lens to perform.

      Steve smith wow man thank you for this detailed input. I have the sigma for a mount and I'm considering exchanging for the sigma to canon and using an mc-11 adapter (it seems like a lot of people do this). What are the benefits of the mc-11 vs the other adapters for video and photography?

    Could you compare Sony lenses with similar parameters SAL vs. SEL? It seems, SAL is much cheaper, e.g. SAL 35mm 1.8 costs $160, while SEL 35F1.8 costs about $450. Does it make sense to buy SAL lenses + original Sony adapter?

      Andriy Biloshapko I reviewed what is the best all-around Sony A mount, the 16-50 F/2.8. The lens is great, the adapter isn't- especially in video mode where it limits you to f/3.5 or slower.

      @realpokski 7 лет назад +1

      If you have a A6300 or 6500, then you can use the LA-EA3 adapter which doesn't have that aperture limitation. Works great for me on the A6500 (where the IBIS also helps). Though it doesn't support the more advanced AF-features, and AF in video seems to only use CDAF :(
      Some testing shows it to be about as sharp as some of my best primes (Sigma 30mm 1.4, Samyang 12mm), at least in the center, however the edges are not as good as the best primes

    • @realpokski
      @realpokski 7 лет назад +1

      But would like to see you give a good SAL 16-50 another chance with a LA-EA3, against the native e-mount zooms, and maybe the Sigma 18-35.

    I sold my Sigma 18-35 mm. I cannot emphasize enough that it wasn't a "sharpness" issue at all. Period. It's SHARP, SHARP, SHARP! I sent it back to Sigma because the focusing wasn't functioning. They returned it quickly but the focusing was only improved, but not really fixed, per se. I was using it on a Canon 80D, which I also sold; the Canon's "out-of-the-camera" images were just unacceptable, in my opinion; color, exposure, were a big disappointment. Imaging required continuous use of menus to "get it right," and I just got tired of using it. When it was right, it worked very well. BUT (big but) out of the box, my new Sony A6000 did so much better. I use the kit lens, the Sony 35mm f1.8 fixed-focus and my favorite, 18-105mm f4. (I shoot on "i-green" mode) I'm an older shooter, and I still remember my 35mm film days with fondness, but I would never go back. This Sony A6000 is THAT GOOD! (image quality reminds me of the quality of a friend's images he gets out of his Canon5D Mk.III- no foolin') For a crop-sensor camera, it's GOOD.
    Love the videos. You're one of the few Sony guys out there.

      Awesome comment - I have heard similar stories from others. The calibration tool with the SIgma lens mount is pretty limited, and I understand how frustrating it must be to keep sending the lens to Sigma. Although if I am honest, I trust Sigma way more than Sony product support, which is embarrassingly terrible.

      For my purchases of tech items I always read the "negative comments," where someone had noted a very bad experience w/Sony service. Therefore, I went to Best Buy instead of mail order/online @ B&H in NY. BestBuy's price was $599.00 for camera w/Kit lens, 16-50mm. I had to pay tax of about $50. And as a precaution, I bought Best Buy's warrantee. My additional Sony lenses I've gotten at Best Buy, also. I still want a full-frame camera, but honestly, when I magnify images on iPhoto, the Sony's are pretty close to FF 5D MkIII.
      With the release of Canon's 6D Mk.II, I expect to see a precipitous drop in 6D MkI prices. It's getting cheaper. Originally it was $2099/camera body only; now its $1300/body, and that wonderful 24-105mm "L" lens is down to $6-700, from over $1100. Thanks for the vids. Could you do one that covers the "over-heat" problem on the A63-6500's?

    Kit lenses seem to get a bad rep. Based on your reviews, the best i've seen with side by side images, the kit lens does very well, especially for the hobbyist, not pro shooter. For example you conclude the kit lens was good and "not blown out of the water" in your "Sony 16-50mm Kit vs 16-70mm Zeiss Comparison." I feel like for a lot of people, a rank novice like me, i'd be just spending money for no reason buying some of these lenses. even the video "Zeiss 16-70mm vs Sony 18-105 G Lens" you say you "though the Zeiss would be the clear winner it wasn't." Not sure that sony is considered a "kit lens" but point is some of these Sony lenses seem to get a bad rap especially the kit lenses. As a novice, watching your reviews though, often the fancy name lenses don't seem to offer much more for the added price.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 лет назад +1

      Absolutely agree with your comment. I think a lot of it is marketing trying to get people to buy expensive photography gear so that their pictures look better, when in reality it is better to practice with your existing gear anyway. A lot of it, frankly, is "pro photographers" pushing expensive gear with false justifications. Very few reviewers are honest enough to tell you that zeiss zoom lenses arent worth it.
