  • Garcia, a former Olympian hailing from the Dominican Republic, directed the course of the bout and withstood a late surge to claim the WBA Super Featherweight World Championship from Roger Gutierrez. The victory was secured through a unanimous decision, with judges Alexander Levin, Michael Ross, and Fred Fluty scoring the contest 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110, respectively. Garcia maintained his unblemished record at 16-0 with 10 knockouts.
Expressing his sentiments, Garcia stated, "Winning this title holds significant meaning for me. I dedicate it to my people, the entire Dominican Republic, and my hometown, San Juan de la Maguana. In the professional circuit, I was relatively unknown, but in the amateur realm, my name resonated. The Olympics were my dream, and I had a successful journey. Despite Gutierrez's attempts to find the decisive blow, I managed to control the fight's pace and secure the victory."
Having previously defeated the unbeaten Colbert on short notice due to Gutierrez's COVID-related withdrawal on February 26, Garcia demonstrated focus and strategy. Throughout the majority of the match, he kept Gutierrez on the defensive, employing a combination of up-jabs and potent left hooks to dominate the first nine rounds according to all three judges.
However, Gutierrez, sporting green-tinted hair and a cut and bloody left ear, staged a comeback in the later rounds. Winning the final three frames on two judges' scorecards, he pressed forward with right-hand strikes, showcasing increased energy and punch output. Despite Garcia displaying signs of fatigue and squaring himself up, Gutierrez (26-4-1, 20 KOs) couldn't fully capitalize. In the 11th round, he appeared to trouble Garcia with a right, but Garcia countered with his own flurry of lefts and rights, thwarting the rally.
In terms of punches landed, Garcia outclassed Gutierrez 156-116 and connected with 35% of his power punches.
Reflecting on the outcome, Gutierrez conceded, "I never felt severely hurt during the fight, but the decision was fair. I initiated my comeback too late. Around the middle of the eighth round, I began connecting with my punches. Garcia skillfully navigated around my left hand. He's undoubtedly not an easy opponent. While this is a tough moment for me, it's just one loss. At 26 years old, I'm still young. I'll take some time to decide my next steps, but I will bounce back. For now, I want to rest and be with my family."
