Thanks for the great video! I thought I'd share a solution for those that run into difficulty putting the actuator back into place. When I went to do so, I was a little baffled because the two knobs seem to be in a 'traverse' position from how they should be positioned. After a number of attempts and scratching my head, I figured out a solution...
I saw a note from someone else where they connected the actuator back to power (letting it just hang down) to verify it was even working. I then started playing with the temperature controls. Wah-lah!! I set the climate control settings to manual and set the temperature to the LO (lowest) position. The little knobs then traversed around to the exact position I needed, and I was able to place it exactly as expected. Hope this helps anyone else that ran into same issue.

    Very helpful. Thanks!
For people wondering if they can do this: push the driver's seat all the way back. Lie on your back, with your head under the dash and your feet sticking out of the car. Then all the parts are within view and accessible. Two of the screws you'll have to do by feel, but not hard to reach.

Omg!! Thank you, thank you!! I know you posted this a few years ago, but you saved my 2007 Honda Odyssey’s AC today!! And I’m a mom who has NEVER fixed a car before! When the problem 1st started (with hot air blowing from the Driver’s side vent when the AC is on especially around 74°F), my local HONDA DEALERSHIP was going to have a field day with my naïveté and the fact that I was a woman customer! They were quoting me $400-500 to try to fix the “first of the 3 motors” since they didn’t know “which” one was not working!! And then go from there! Yeah right!
So then I took it to my local trustworthy mechanic, and they showed me I had barely enough Freon in my 2007 Odyssey since I never knew I was supposed to top off or even check the Freon every 5 years or so! So after they refilled it professionally, my AC seemed to have found itself and started to work again! And even the HVAC self-diagnostic test (I found how to do it on the Honda Odyssey forum) indicated there was no problem! That was 2 weeks ago.
Then the AC reverted to its old problems, blowing out hot air only through the Driver’s side vent when I start adjusting the temps (as you go from 75° to 74°, this usually happened). And when I ran the HVAC self-diagnostic test again, it showed that there was a problem with the air mix motor on the driver’s side! Sigh….
So I started to search online for a solution and TODAY I came across your RUclips Videos. I went and got a new set of ratchet and socket set (had to learn how to use this!), a dielectric grease, and even a lithium grease, and followed your direction to the T. The only thing is when I tried to separate the actuator/air mix motor housing, no matter how gently I tried, a few tabs broke off. So when I put the the covers/housing back together, I used some electric tape to hold it together.
AND the end result is, I was able to clean out the actuator/motor and grease the electric contact parts and the wheel, and WA-LAH, it’s FIXED!!!! I ran the AC, moving the temps up and down, and NO MORE HOT AIR!!!! I ran the HVAC self-diagnostic test once more and it came back problem free this time!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR your kind gesture and posting your videos! I’m so grateful to you! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that my AC will last as long as we have our minivan! But for now, I’m doing the happy mom dance 💃🏻!! I feel so proud that I was able to act like a Honda Mechanic and fix my own car issue! Much blessings to you!!
The fact that this car novice can fix the AC issue, using a ratchet for the very 1st time, indicates how well you made your 2 videos and how well you taught your viewers!

Kind of a pain to get to the part but a fairly simple job once you figure out how to get to it. I was quoted $400-$500 for this repair from a shop and with this video and the other video showing how to clean the part I was able to do it for $12 and about an hour of work. Thanks for saving me a small fortune!

Fantastic, helpful video. I heard the death-knell crunchy/rodent-like sound in the dash, followed days later by the Incessant Blast of Hades while driving, regardless of dashboard settings. Bought a genuine Honda replacement online. After diagnosis, this video helped me install a replacement on a '10 Odyssey Touring. Score one for mom. I needed a headlamp, screwdrivers, and a small mirror to see the backside of the actuator. Many thanks!

I will add that this is not a project for a novice as it requires removing interior panels and being comfortable with tools, but certainly not difficult for those versed with such things. Took me about an hour start to finish.

Thanks the tips in this video. One thing is for sure, getting to some of those screws takes some effort and flexibility. For what is worth, I would avoid using a phillips tip (or make sure it is magnetized) and use a socket because there is less chance of losing the screw. I lost one of them. Hopefully it will pop up at some point. Some useful tools are a flexible drill bit extension and a headlamp (bonus if it has a tilt adjustment). Do some stretches before trying this. As Barbour's Auto says, these are tight quarters.

Best video for this repair! Thank you! I got a part off Amazon, fingers crossed because it was only like 30 bucks. Your description of the noise sounding like a rat is exactly what I experienced sitting in line in my Odyssey at WalMart waiting for grocery pickup service. You’re the only other person I’ve heard describe that perfectly, and how the sound travels. Going to do the repair tonight or this weekend.

I'm amazed that you could video this while actually doing this. Lying on my back and/or trying to get under the dash while kneeling outside the van, trying to get a flashlight where I could see, trying to get the tools onto those screws... quite a pain. I took my actuator apart, cleaned the contacts, cleaned the resistive paint on the substrate, applied some grease (dielectric?) that I had from when I worked at an auto manufacturer supplier that made throttle position sensors, and it seems to be working fine. I removed the bottom center console panel and removed the plastic below the steering wheel too. Gave me a little more room and ability to see the one screw for the air vent. 4 screws to remove that bottom center console plastic. 2 below the cup holder, 1 on each side down at the bottom. The plastic below the steering wheel (not the plastic around the steering column) has 1 screw on the bottom, then just pulls out.

When reinstalling the actuator, first take 3 2-inch screws and cut off the heads. Insert those into the 3 mounting holes under the dash. Now slide the actuator over these 3 posts and get the pins in the slots. Those posts will hold the actuator in place while you remove them one-by-one and put back the original screws.

I did similar repair on the Honda Accord when the air coming out of the air vent is barely cold. As it turns out mostly like, the sensor wheel and the electrical contacts did not make good connections so the ECU does not know if the door is open or close so it kept hunting for the position. What you ended up with is AC not cold on the driver side and even if when the AC is not running, the driver side temperature motor assembly kept looking for the right position by going back and forth and causing the rat noise under the dash. So after taking it out of the Accord, I opened it up by prying up the plastic tabs and clean out the old grease on both the sensor wheel and the electrical contacts and clean the electrical contacts with rubbing alcohol. After putting on some new dielectric grease on both the sensor wheel and the electrical contacts and put the two halves of the assembly back together. Make sure you remember or mark the orientation of the external arm relative to the casing so that it lines up after you put them back. After putting the assembly back into the car, the AC is now ice cold on the driver side at 77F (ambient 95F). So with some delicate repair, my driver side temperature motor assembly should be good for the next 10 years with about a nickle worth of dielectric grease and some elbow grease. It is a waste of money to replace the temperature motor assembly unless the motor dies, which is very rare.

My 2005 Ody EX-L and my 2009 Ody EX-L both had this exact problem. But it wasn't the blend door actuator... it was the heater control valve. The actuator was working correctly, but the valve, while appearing to be in the closed position, was only really fully closed when it was jammed in the closed position. Any tiny bit away from that and it spiked the temp on both sides. If you remove the cable from the valve and jam it closed, it may prove the problem. Part was about $50.

Your video was so helpful. I was able to install it in my 2009 odyssey. The only issue is that it looks like the actuator isn’t setting the temperature as per the control. Before installing I had my temperature settings all the way low & face and then installed it. How do I reset the actuator so that it syncs with the control button? Thanks!

I'm not sure. You could have something else going on or the actuator possibly is bad.

Thanks nice video, Just replaced my drivers side blend door. Very tight quarters. Mine was blowing hot air on drivers side and cold ac on passenger side (2007 accord ex-l dual controls)
What is the purpose of the white air flow tube at 2.29 in the video, mine popped out and it was very difficult to get it back in place, it came off the distribution box, I can feel cold air at what looks like a horn on the end, plus the air travels elsewhere (maybe the head end console/radio and other stuff to circulate air?) I had banged on my old unit back in 2018 and lasted to April 3 of 2022, I did this again an it worked, however, I had a new Blend door motor assembly from 2018 so I installed the new unit, it is working. On the Accord it is very tight quarter to get at the top screw. I will clean and lube the old unit so I will have a spare on hand, It also fits my 2003 Honda Accord, but hope I do not have to perform this maintenance for a long time.

Hi Keith, thanks for your great video. I have the same problem with warm air on driver side, but when I adjust the temp from warm to cold and back, I can visibly see the actuator arms moving through their full cycle. Since the actuator seems to be working properly, should I remove/clean it or troubleshoot something else? My refrigerant is charged correctly/no leaks. Thank you.

@@MarkMcCormickFitness I replaced the original driver actuator with a new GPD 1712737 Heater Blend Door Actuator $42.79 from RockAuto. I thought maybe the actuator just wasn't pushing the doors all the way. Didn't seem to improve the situation--driver side is usually about 20 degrees hotter than passenger side on lowest a/c setting. Unrelated, but my driver side runs cooler, but not cold, when I sync with the rear a/c system. Makes it loud in the van.

I have a 2011 Honda CRV and I’m having trouble with the heat/ac. It blows cold air in winter and hot air in summer. Dealership claims it was the AC button ($800 repair). That would explain the hot air in summer not the cold air in winter. Fluids are fine. Hoses are fine. Thermostat is fine.
Is this an actuator problem or is it the control knob on dash?
    All vents blow just fine

I did the same thing, no replacement, just fixing thr current one. I see that the actuator moves on low and high temperature from one end to the other. But remains in place for other changes in temperature setting.
Didn't take the van out yet to test fully.

However when I turn ac on and off the tachometer barely moves but I can hear the compressor go on.

Hi, thanks very much for this repair. This video is excellent. I am sharing my experience in detail as follows for 2010 Honda CRV. I am in need of a ratchet for tight space (possibly adjustable like a adjustable wrench with a wheel) and or flex extension, if someone can point me right to it.
Problem symptoms: No air from middle central vents (two) and very little air from driver's side left vent. Full air flow near accelerator and everywhere else. But on driver's side only cold air flowing no matter what setting is for the temperature or on AC mode, manual or auto mode. Same problem even if flipped to different air flow modes on the knob. No heater at all for driver's side. Heat and cold just fine on passenger's side on auto, manual or dual mode.
Fix: Removed air mix motor actuator and cleaned it, greased it per instructions on this video. Total expense $10. Before opening the case, there were three other screws holding a metal bar plate to the plastic casing for which one screw couldn't be removed as the arm was blocking and without it coming off I couldn't open the case. So, I used nose pliers and got it off by turning it. In the end I forgot to put the screw back in place but the plate was still holding quite well, no problems. I didn't bother for it. I didn't have flex extension for ratchet nor I could get it easily in my location so wind up using #7 wrench for the tight space bolt. It was a long extensive effort! But I didn't put it back in place in the end when I finished, the actuator was still attached fine in place. For the two easy bolts I used a small ratchet very easily. When I opened the case, the contacts and wheel was on the arm side (downside) and hence not on the top as shown here (this video is for Odyssey) but nevertheless, I was able to clean it and grease it just fine, there's a plenty of space for it and the cleaner is a good spray. I used a screwdriver tip to put dielectric grease on the wheel. I removed motor and gears and cleaned it too (there was lithium grease and for sure it was dried on contact wheel) but while assembling the motor back, the letters / writing label on the motor has to be facing me or the actuator could work in reverse.
Surprise: When assembled back the actuator arm didn't move no matter what I set for the temperature (auto mode or manual) and hence the problem stayed as is. So, I removed it (only two screws to remove now as mentioned earlier!) and attached with the power cord and tested again, still no arm movement. I thought there might be power issue to the power plug. So, to test that I attached it with the power plug on the passenger's side actuator which is accessible when glove box is detached and lowered. Then the arm moved fully! At which point I thought there's a power issue for sure on driver's side. But I attached it with the power plug on driver's side again and it worked! And it worked for all temperature settings too. The arm was adjusting little with little change in temperature on the knob on auto mode. So, I put it back in place like shown in this video (but I only have one white arm to attached two, not two like in here) and gave it power. Started the car and hot, cold air and anything in between was flowing per settings. However, no air still from middle front central vents despite several engine restarts. So, thinking there might be another issue (transistor etc.) I turned the car off. When I turned car on several hours later, air started flowing from middle vents as well! More so when AC is on high and not so much even when high heat is on. This is normal car operation I think. You don't want high heat on your face.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  4 года назад

Hmmm. Thank you so much for sharing our experience. You may actually still have a problem. My van blows out the middle vents well no matter if the the A/C is on or the heat. It does blow a little slower with the heat on though, but not that much. It may not be a bad idea to have a tech look at it for you.

@@BarboursAutoHelp I am sure it is actuator on passengers side, only thing is it is not as easy to remove as one on drivers side, but I did put down glove box,and shined in dash with flashlight, directly on passenger side actuator, and the white arms that move up and down,as you adjust your passenger side temp, the white arm keeps sticking in about same place,I can reach in and push on it,and that will make it start back moving,so I guess the motor inside the actuator has got weak,to were it will not make the arm go up and down completely without sticking

Question: my 2007 honda accord air when heat is turned on blows hot on passenger side and cold on driver side and after awhile of driving with it like that all the vents stopped blowing any air at all. So we get a part that (i thinks called a blower moter part) that plugged in behind the glove box and the air flow started back working but I'm back to the original problem of : heats on but blowing cold on driver side and hot on passenger...so since the driver side should be blowing hot (and its cold) I'm thinking this part the blend door actuator for DRIVER SIDE is the part I need...whats your opinion? 😊 Thanks for answering and appreciate this video😊👍

AWESOME REPAIR VIDEO...THX!!! Thanks for saving me $$$!!! The most difficult part about this is the very tight space you have to work in...not sure if the bottom surface panel directly underneath the steering wheel can be removed, but if you can do that, I think you have a bit more room to work with to make this easier. This video, coupled with the one on repairing/re-lubricating the blend door actuator -- ruclips.net/video/jWcWUlbksco/видео.html&t, makes this repair $0 with stuff already around the house...used rubbing alcohol to clean and some lithium grease to lube. One piece of advice is to take a picture of the positioning of the white arms on the actuator, so that when you put it back together you can position them exactly where they were when you took it out of the car.
