The biggest downside of this show is that a lot of characters don't interact with each other. Even some of the main cast like Emma and Regina only interact a handful of times throughout the entire show.

SPOILERS: there are a few moments in the show (in s5 i think) when robin points out how zelena SA’d him but it gets brushed off. at least with regina and graham one could claim the writers didn’t know what they were doing (because they didn’t) but with zelena they were aware. which makes zelena’s ‘redemption arc’ all the more sinister, especially when you remember that regina told robin to ‘give zelena a chance’ (in s5)

honestly, its like the writers flirted with the idea, but either weren't allowed to actually go for it or they just wanted to tease the audience who were wanting it.
I've decided to believe The Author simply swapping all the heroes and villains roles instead of writing the villians actually winning is a testament to him being a bad, unimaginative writer, rather than a very strange decision by the writers of the show. That just feels more fun to me
I always thought him being shallow was part of it. Like he clearly has a goofy worldview and that impacted his stance on whether he could fuck with reality around you freely, even using good people to do so. All blame is on this unlikeable coward. I dare say this guy was written this way to make Rumplestiltskin look like less of a moron in the modern day, because there are so many ways to travel realms now and he had to do a long con to make the Dark Curse happen instead.

Disney was super weird about forcing Frozen into its fun IPs and then not allowing the writers do anything interesting with it. The Frozen world in kingdom hearts III is notorious for being one of the worst worlds in the series for this reason (doesn’t help there’s a whole unskippable cutscene of Let It Go…)
The framework of OUAT is so silly all the time but then it has moments like Elsa's "we have to learn to love ourselves" speech and Belle responding to Rumple saying he doesn't want to lose her with "You already have" and the way that one vision from the unicorn fundamentally shaped the way Snow and David react differently to Emma for the entire show. so I'm trying to tell people about all the cool emotional beats and drama but Cruella De Vil is just STANDING THERE MENACINGLY,
I decided to finally watch season 5 because of this series and I was complaining to my girlfriend, the problem with the series is it's really compelling when it's not being stupid. And it's *really* stupid when it's not being compelling
The biggest problem with the Frozen integration, in my mind, is the fact that Frozen was still a worldwide phenomenon and Disney's favorite cashcow when they produced this season. Disney was absolutely not gonna let them do anything ambitious with Frozen. Not the costumes, not the story, not the themes, nor the writing overall. OUATs biggest strength is being able to do weird and ambitious things with classic stories, and they seemed completely unable or unwilling to do that here.
Literally the exact same thing happened with Kingdom Hearts 3, Disney even then was so protective of their brand integrity that they wouldn't let anything remotely controversial happen in the story, and it became the worst world in the game because of it
It’s also not a Classic story like the rest of the fairytales they’d done up to this point. The only cultural touchpoint for Elsa and Anna for most people is this one movie, rather than the hundreds of versions of Snow White, Cinderella, etc

Every other one before frozen’s release was a interesting twist on their film outfits but then frozen comes out and they get screen accurate down to the exact detail. I do absolutely love it but it’s an interesting take on the characters
@@tommyherrick8220 I have to give it to you, Rapunzel plot twist may have been interesting, had they already not shown Rapunzel story in earlier seasons. What they did with her in s 7 similar to what they did with Ursula in s4. They changed them in theory but it still doesn't work since they tried retold the stories they themselves have already told. We already had Ariel so trying give Ursula Ariel's story line (and completely detach her from Ariel's) doesn't work. Same with Rapunzel and other characters from seasons 7 - we already had Rapunzel's story in a previous season. Trying to reuse popular tales instead of adding new one is still cheap writing, at least according to me. After S3 we have either stories based on disney - frozen, maleficient, cruella, hades, alladin and jasmine, merida - (all those stories and characters stopped being new characters based on fairy tales and became disney versions because even if they stories were a little changed they still had same character, story or even clothes) or reusing fairy tales already used - mostly season 7.
For some reason to me the shot of Gold walking over the town line and changing from hobbling to walking and throwing his cane behind him is one of my favorite visuals of the show. Also shoutouts to the one blooper of him just lying on the floor while crew pulls the magic box to shake next to him on wires while he just mutters "classically trained actor" to himself
I HOPE that's what was meant, I would LOVE it, especially since I stopped watching after S8 (no reason, just stopped) so I'd be excited to see how the bits I'm familiar with compare to the bits I'm not when Haley tells the story

@tommyherrick8220 Not every animated film goes through this kind of production process. Most of the legwork is done while the film is still in animatics. When the film is in rendering, usually the film is nearly at it's final form. While changes are usually made, they tend to be minor, and not written on the fly like Frozen 2 was. Sometimes this still results in a good movie (Across the Spider-Verse had a famously hectic production due in large part to mismanagement from the producers/lead writers), but many times this kind of production process results in a mess.
henry mills, my son, was the mvp this season to *me*. he heard his mom wants a happy ending and can't seem to get one because she's a villain and he immediately throws himself into this research and decides to work at gold's shop undercover. he spends the entire second half of the season dedicated to the author shit. he finally goes to the enchanted forest this season even if there was a role swap au going on. he tackles a fully grown man. he's given the power to write and rewrite reality and says nah I'm good. absolute king shit. he will always be the MVP in my heart
Imagine a B plot of an episode: Killian has to deal with spam calls and texts even though he never gave his phone number to anyone or signed up for anything. And then Charming and Snow also start getting spam calls. So then Mr Gold overhears and to get some good points with Henry he introduces Storybrook to Aura and protecting personal information.
I'm now convinced that every TV show and movie in the modern day exists in some alternate universe where spam calls do not exist, because they always pick up immediately, with no question. Also, whenever an unknown number calls it's always weird and suspicious, and must be the bad guy, instead of just being another annoying robo call

i like that hook calls for backup because it truly leans into his backstory that he was in the navy. he was actually trained how to react in these kinds of situations so he consistently calls for backup or for other help because he knows going in alone is reckless and would get the whole crew killed. beautiful little detail chefs kiss mwah

I was working in Steveston when this and the following seasons were filmed. We did catering for the ground crew and sometimes had the actors come in to the cafe. I remember Georgina Haig (Elsa) being really polite and lovely, but I did have to stop myself from asking her what she thought of her Elsa dress because from what I saw of her working in it, it looked damn uncomfortable. Shout out to the OUAT crew, they were by the far the best crew to film in Steveston and work with the local merchants. Unlike Supernatural.

I was told by a coordinator that we should expect high volume traffic from ground crew/staff/actors during the day of filming, and they even opened up a $1K tab, so ofc I'm like oh shit I have to book all my staff in and have folks in early to make sure we had enough baked goods/coffee ready for the rush we expected. Then the day of filming they proceeded to block off the entire street and surrounding lanes, thus blocking off civilian traffic AND blocking deliveries to the cafe. And then none of the SPN crew came in. They didn't use their tab except for like a couple coffees/doughnuts. Like max $100 of goods + tips. So I basically had all my staff and $1K worth of goods just. Sitting there. For a whole day. None of the businesses in our block got any traffic either, so we were all basically burning money. I ended up just standing outside the cafe glaring at Jared Padalecki all day while I sent my staff back home. We ran at a deficit that day. Actual shitshow.

Rumple and Belle's relationship actually drives me crazy. Like I WANT Rumple to be a morally ambigious wildcard, but he can't be that AND a viable love interest for Belle. Either give Rumple some actual fucking character development or give Belle a better boyfriend!
i mean arguably the bigger problem is they didn't want BELLE to be morally ambiguous. we're given "rumple is willing to change for her" and his happy ending as portrayed by him is him being the hero that she wants him to be. at no point does BELLE ever want to meet him at that morally ambiguous middle. she could make him better/he could make her worse. it is annoying because all the components for them to be more interesting than any other ship is THERE, they just... for whatever reason... don't go for it.

Will Rumple pull to hard and drag them both into a life of evil? Or can they find a morally-grey balance that lets them both grow as people? What I'm saying is they should make a reboot of the show and let ME write it.

Emma also can do magic in the land without magic!! it’s shown in her flashback with Ingrid when she makes the claw machine flash and shake; when she gives birth to Henry and the lights flicker as she screams; and when she punches Lily in the modern era there’s lighting and lights flashing. it’s strongly implied that magic in the regular world is possible, but it takes strong magic users, like Emma, the Dragon, and the Apprentice.
As an 11-year-old I was told that they were making a live-action frozen so naturally I HAD to check it out. I ended up watching an insane amount of unrelated OUAT S4 (season 4 ONLY somehow) clips on RUclips, so im watching this season through a haze of nostalgia and abject confusion,, when I saw Will Scarlett's face for the first time I felt like I was a sleeper agent getting activated for the first time in 10 years, I KNOW that man I KNOW HIM

worth noting that ursula says she gave herself tentacles 'like the sea goddess she was named after' meaning that there are three separate ursulas in canon. the first being regina pretending to be the sea goddess to trick ariel, second being the actual goddess who possessed the statue of ursula to threaten regina and then was never seen again and now this ursula. who has no actual basis in fairytale and is just a mermaid, an entirely original charqacter. except i guess she could be very very loosely based on the plot of the little mermaid 3 where triton bans music because his wife loved to sing and she was killed by pirates. it's basically mermaid footloose and ariel is kevin bacon.
Snow and charming aren’t really heroes in my eyes because, it seems like most of the heroic things they do are in some form a self-serving action or something that would benefit them. I don’t see them doing a lot of selfless acts.

I will forever die on the hill that Victoria Smurfit absolutely knocked it out of the park as Cruella, and her origin story is waaaaaay better than it has any right to be. Honestly I remember really being a big fan of season 4 aside from shoehorning in Elsa and Anna. Like they could have just played off the popularity of Frozen and just focused on Ingrid and the Snow Queen storyline as something peripheral to Frozen things as a bit of an iykyk situation. But I will also forever wish the dress they kept Elsa in the whole time didn’t just look like a cheap Halloween costume
Her backstory makes her one of my all time favorite villains. She's got no trauma, no motive, she doesn't justify what she does. She's awful and proud of it. Thats what I wanted the Malificent movie to be: 95 minutes of a lady who put a whole family through 16 years of psychological torture then had a child put herself in a coma...because she didnt get invited to a baby shower. That's it. They could have even done it exactly like this- have a flashback tragic backstory that turns out to be a fake out. Instead of that dude betraying her and cutting her wings, he genuinely falls in love and it all turns out to be a long con for whatever reason (not a justifiable reason, though. Maybe she needs the heart of someone that loves her to do the spell that gives her the ability to turn into a dragon, and she thought that'd be a neat thing to be able to do)

I SCREAMED when I saw Kristoff - I haven’t seen these episodes since they aired and have since learned the Crazy Ex Girlfriend songs by heart, and that + the Frozen season of OUAT were NOT two worlds I ever expected to collide.
Once Upon a Time spent so much time creating sympathetic and nuanced backstories for so many villains, and they decided to make Cruella just straight up evil. It was hilarious, reminded me of the Starkid Musical Twisted. Though I'd love to hear the pitch for how to make Cruella De Vil more sympathetic.
i know this is a little dramatic but the whole baby sacrifice thing genuinely ruins snow & charming as characters for me. like i cannot rewatch snow crying in season 2 about killing cora and being SO torn up about it, acting like it's the first awful thing she's ever done. they're constantly going on about how good they are and how they will always be good and then season 4 makes literally all of that disingenuous. i feel like they could have fixed it easily as well, have them be so guilt ridden in the first place that they have to take forgetting potions to be able to live with themselves, and then when maleficent comes back reveal to them what they did and have them deal with it then. IDK I JUST HATE IT

They had DISNEY money. One of the mirrors in the ice cream shop that’s barely on screen for 5 seconds total was a $1600 mirror from Anthropologie (I’d been wanting it for years and that’s why I noticed it), so they clearly had money to spend, why were they so stingy on the cgi budget. I genuinely want to know the reason why they allowed the cgi to be that bad.
I’m sure I’m not the first to say this but - honestly shocking that they didn’t turn Cruella’s cigarette holder into some kind of magical object, so then to do (specifically) mind control magic she has to take a long drag off it? It’s just such an iconic part of her character in the original movie - it’s a bummer they didn’t include it somehow.

I watched this show as a kid and I remember loving Lily (and her "dynamic" with Emma, I was a child, the word gay did not register with me) so much and hoping every episode that she'd show back up... some day..... I gave up some time around season 6 but I do remember being pretty devastated about her never showing back
also. while im 90% certain this was done accidentally. i loveeee the flipping of the narrative this season where emma expresses fear that something might happen to killian based on her track record with love interests only for something to end up happening to *her* at the end.... it's a very simple but fun means of flipping the script tbh

The biggest downside of this show is that a lot of characters don't interact with each other. Even some of the main cast like Emma and Regina only interact a handful of times throughout the entire show.

I've decided to believe The Author simply swapping all the heroes and villains roles instead of writing the villians actually winning is a testament to him being a bad, unimaginative writer, rather than a very strange decision by the writers of the show. That just feels more fun to me

I always thought him being shallow was part of it. Disney was super weird about forcing Frozen into its fun IPs and then not allowing the writers do anything interesting with it. The Frozen world in kingdom hearts III is notorious for being one of the worst worlds in the series for this reason (doesn’t help there’s a whole unskippable cutscene of Let It Go…)

The biggest problem with the Frozen integration, in my mind, is the fact that Frozen was still a worldwide phenomenon and Disney's favorite cashcow when they produced this season. Disney was absolutely not gonna let them do anything ambitious with Frozen. Not the costumes, not the story, not the themes, nor the writing overall. OUATs biggest strength is being able to do weird and ambitious things with classic stories, and they seemed completely unable or unwilling to do that here.
Literally the exact same thing happened with Kingdom Hearts 3, Disney even then was so protective of their brand integrity that they wouldn't let anything remotely controversial happen in the story, and it became the worst world in the game because of it
It’s also not a Classic story like the rest of the fairytales they’d done up to this point. The only cultural touchpoint for Elsa and Anna for most people is this one movie, rather than the hundreds of versions of Snow White, Cinderella, etc

Every other one before frozen’s release was a interesting twist on their film outfits but then frozen comes out and they get screen accurate down to the exact detail. I do absolutely love it but it’s an interesting take on the characters

@@tommyherrick8220 I have to give it to you, Rapunzel plot twist may have been interesting, had they already not shown Rapunzel story in earlier seasons. What they did with her in s 7 similar to what they did with Ursula in s4. They changed them in theory but it still doesn't work since they tried retold the stories they themselves have already told. We already had Ariel so trying give Ursula Ariel's story line (and completely detach her from Ariel's) doesn't work. Same with Rapunzel and other characters from seasons 7 - we already had Rapunzel's story in a previous season. Trying to reuse popular tales instead of adding new one is still cheap writing, at least according to me.
After S3 we have either stories based on disney - frozen, maleficient, cruella, hades, alladin and jasmine, merida - (all those stories and characters stopped being new characters based on fairy tales and became disney versions because even if they stories were a little changed they still had same character, story or even clothes) or reusing fairy tales already used - mostly season 7.
For some reason to me the shot of Gold walking over the town line and changing from hobbling to walking and throwing his cane behind him is one of my favorite visuals of the show. Also shoutouts to the one blooper of him just lying on the floor while crew pulls the magic box to shake next to him on wires while he just mutters "classically trained actor" to himself

Honestly, the storyline they came up with for OUAT feels kinda like what could’ve been Frozen 1 plot lines if Let It Go hadn’t been such a banger and they rewrote Elsa from villain to protagonist.

Remember how Elsa was supposed to originally be a villain? And then let it go happened and they completely reworked the entire story?
@tommyherrick8220 Not every animated film goes through this kind of production process. Most of the legwork is done while the film is still in animatics. When the film is in rendering, usually the film is nearly at it's final form. While changes are usually made, they tend to be minor, and not written on the fly like Frozen 2 was. Sometimes this still results in a good movie (Across the Spider-Verse had a famously hectic production due in large part to mismanagement from the producers/lead writers), but many times this kind of production process results in a mess.
henry mills, my son, was the mvp this season to *me*. he heard his mom wants a happy ending and can't seem to get one because she's a villain and he immediately throws himself into this research and decides to work at gold's shop undercover. he spends the entire second half of the season dedicated to the author shit. he finally goes to the enchanted forest this season even if there was a role swap au going on. he tackles a fully grown man. he's given the power to write and rewrite reality and says nah I'm good. absolute king shit. he will always be the MVP in my heart
Imagine a B plot of an episode: Killian has to deal with spam calls and texts even though he never gave his phone number to anyone or signed up for anything. And then Charming and Snow also start getting spam calls. So then Mr Gold overhears and to get some good points with Henry he introduces Storybrook to Aura and protecting personal information.
I'm now convinced that every TV show and movie in the modern day exists in some alternate universe where spam calls do not exist, because they always pick up immediately, with no question. Also, whenever an unknown number calls it's always weird and suspicious, and must be the bad guy, instead of just being another annoying robo call

i like that hook calls for backup because it truly leans into his backstory that he was in the navy. he was actually trained how to react in these kinds of situations so he consistently calls for backup or for other help because he knows going in alone is reckless and would get the whole crew killed. beautiful little detail chefs kiss mwah

I usually hate Belle (not really for her, she isn't really enough of a stand alone character, i just really hate her relationship) so i was CHEERING when she forced rumple over the town line. it genuinely felt like this show was finally realizing how AWFUL their relationship was, and i so WISH they woulda stuck to it
Their relationship is the hill that the show decided to die on. Literally every other man in this show is a wife guy except for him. This should have been the end of their relationship.

I was working in Steveston when this and the following seasons were filmed. We did catering for the ground crew and sometimes had the actors come in to the cafe. I remember Georgina Haig (Elsa) being really polite and lovely, but I did have to stop myself from asking her what she thought of her Elsa dress because from what I saw of her working in it, it looked damn uncomfortable. Shout out to the OUAT crew, they were by the far the best crew to film in Steveston and work with the local merchants. Unlike Supernatural.

I was told by a coordinator that we should expect high volume traffic from ground crew/staff/actors during the day of filming, and they even opened up a $1K tab, so ofc I'm like oh shit I have to book all my staff in and have folks in early to make sure we had enough baked goods/coffee ready for the rush we expected.
Then the day of filming they proceeded to block off the entire street and surrounding lanes, thus blocking off civilian traffic AND blocking deliveries to the cafe. And then none of the SPN crew came in. They didn't use their tab except for like a couple coffees/doughnuts. Like max $100 of goods + tips.
So I basically had all my staff and $1K worth of goods just. Sitting there. For a whole day. None of the businesses in our block got any traffic either, so we were all basically burning money. I ended up just standing outside the cafe glaring at Jared Padalecki all day while I sent my staff back home. We ran at a deficit that day.

Flashbacks to little me being absolutely desperate for any POC representation on this show, getting so excited whenever a Black person showed up and then being inevitably crushed when they died/left 🥲. I also watched the show with my mother and sister, and all three of us were actually yelling and cheering when Sidney Glass showed up, we were so excited that he was back instead of being shelved completely and so hopeful he'd get a better storyline. 😅
i was SO sad that ursula never made a comeback, she was so iconic and amazing and honestly so much better than what disney attempted to do in descendants (where they also have a rule of always villainizing at least one black woman per film)

and in season 6 there will be Aladdin, played by a brown actor, he was just ok as far as i can remember, that should probably count as a win.
To be fair most of main cast are related, so it's natural they're going to have the same skin color. There are only few important families in the entire show.
Rumple and Belle's relationship actually drives me crazy. Like I WANT Rumple to be a morally ambigious wildcard, but he can't be that AND a viable love interest for Belle. Either give Rumple some actual fucking character development or give Belle a better boyfriend!
i mean arguably the bigger problem is they didn't want BELLE to be morally ambiguous. we're given "rumple is willing to change for her" and his happy ending as portrayed by him is him being the hero that she wants him to be. at no point does BELLE ever want to meet him at that morally ambiguous middle. she could make him better/he could make her worse. it is annoying because all the components for them to be more interesting than any other ship is THERE, they just... for whatever reason... don't go for it.

I can see it so clearly...it ties into the bookworm thing she's already got, and you can even reference the Disney movie and say her dad taught her how to invent stuff.
Teenaged!Belle is shunned by the townsfolk for being just a little TOO interested in dark magic and forbidden science. By the time 20s!Belle meets Rumple she's learned to mask her interests and not go on long-winded rants about the cool magical theory behind evil curses.
Then you can have an actually interesting push-and-pull between these two. Belle pulls Rumple towards being more pro-social and less comically evil. Rumple pulls Belle towards embracing her weirdo goth scientist goals. Will Belle pull too hard and drag them both into a life of repression? Will Rumple pull to hard and drag them both into a life of evil? Or can they find a morally-grey balance that lets them both grow as people?
What I'm saying is they should make a reboot of the show and let ME write it.

I ended up watching an insane amount of unrelated OUAT S4 (season 4 ONLY somehow) clips on RUclips, so im watching this season through a haze of nostalgia and abject confusion,, when I saw Will Scarlett's face for the first time I felt like I was a sleeper agent getting activated for the first time in 10 years, I KNOW that man I KNOW HIM

worth noting that ursula says she gave herself tentacles 'like the sea goddess she was named after' meaning that there are three separate ursulas in canon. the first being regina pretending to be the sea goddess to trick ariel, second being the actual goddess who possessed the statue of ursula to threaten regina and then was never seen again and now this ursula. who has no actual basis in fairytale and is just a mermaid, an entirely original charqacter. except i guess she could be very very loosely based on the plot of the little mermaid 3 where triton bans music because his wife loved to sing and she was killed by pirates. it's basically mermaid footloose and ariel is kevin bacon.

I will forever die on the hill that Victoria Smurfit absolutely knocked it out of the park as Cruella, and her origin story is waaaaaay better than it has any right to be. Honestly I remember really being a big fan of season 4 aside from shoehorning in Elsa and Anna. Like they could have just played off the popularity of Frozen and just focused on Ingrid and the Snow Queen storyline as something peripheral to Frozen things as a bit of an iykyk situation. But I will also forever wish the dress they kept Elsa in the whole time didn’t just look like a cheap Halloween costume
Her backstory makes her one of my all time favorite villains. She's got no trauma, no motive, she doesn't justify what she does. She's awful and proud of it.
Thats what I wanted the Malificent movie to be: 95 minutes of a lady who put a whole family through 16 years of psychological torture then had a child put herself in a coma...because she didnt get invited to a baby shower. That's it. They could have even done it exactly like this- have a flashback tragic backstory that turns out to be a fake out. Instead of that dude betraying her and cutting her wings, he genuinely falls in love and it all turns out to be a long con for whatever reason (not a justifiable reason, though. Maybe she needs the heart of someone that loves her to do the spell that gives her the ability to turn into a dragon, and she thought that'd be a neat thing to be able to do)

Once Upon a Time spent so much time creating sympathetic and nuanced backstories for so many villains, and they decided to make Cruella just straight up evil. It was hilarious, reminded me of the Starkid Musical Twisted. Though I'd love to hear the pitch for how to make Cruella De Vil more sympathetic.
i know this is a little dramatic but the whole baby sacrifice thing genuinely ruins snow & charming as characters for me. like i cannot rewatch snow crying in season 2 about killing cora and being SO torn up about it, acting like it's the first awful thing she's ever done. they're constantly going on about how good they are and how they will always be good and then season 4 makes literally all of that disingenuous.
i feel like they could have fixed it easily as well, have them be so guilt ridden in the first place that they have to take forgetting potions to be able to live with themselves, and then when maleficent comes back reveal to them what they did and have them deal with it then.

They had DISNEY money. One of the mirrors in the ice cream shop that’s barely on screen for 5 seconds total was a $1600 mirror from Anthropologie (I’d been wanting it for years and that’s why I noticed it), so they clearly had money to spend, why were they so stingy on the cgi budget. I genuinely want to know the reason why they allowed the cgi to be that bad.

I watched this show as a kid and I remember loving Lily (and her "dynamic" with Emma, I was a child, the word gay did not register with me) so much and hoping every episode that she'd show back up... some day..... I think they do say that this Ursula is named after the Goddess Ursula who we saw before, so it's not that bad, imo
