  • Winter fishing is hard, no doubt about it. If it was easy the river would be lined with fisherman. However, with the right tactics, persistence, and technique, you can see success on the river. On this trip I netted a few browns and a bow using streamers and nymphs.

      They are pretty tough to beat. A nice middle ground from a nymph and meat streamer. I think it appeals to all sized fish, anchors the system, and is quite versatile in how you can present it. Shame you moved, but hopefully good fishing where you are now. In the meantime, live vicariously though the videos for memories!

    Thanks Mike! Was out to the GP last Thursday planning on this Thursday also. There were a couple nice ones you landed there. I carry micros I’ll have to give it a shot. Up until a couple weeks ago they were slamming micro eggs,now for the most part Zebra midges have been doing well. It looks like you had the stream to yourself and had a good day trying something new. Again thanks for the videos.

      Hey Dale,
      That is awesome you get out that much. It is brutal right now with the cold. Looks like it will warm a little bit later in the week. Def give them a shot. I find that black and olive are my go to colors. Eggs and Midges though are the name of the game when nymphing. I had a two dozen fish day on the 1st with those patterns, they are just locked in. Was awesome! Good luck when you go and maybe I will see you on the stream this year!

    Recently I’ve been tying really really small streamer-esque patterns on a size 10 jig w/ a tungsten bead at the top and running them as my point fly, with a small size 16-20 nymph as the tag. When I do this I know I always get down to where the fish are, and it presents two options for them to take depending on their mood. Great video Mike!

      One specific pattern is George Daniels sculp snack (I think that’s what it’s named). It’s absolutely killer on a euro setup. I am grateful to have had him as a teacher in college

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  2 года назад

      I have tied and fished the sculp snack. I recently got one on the GP with it. I probably tied it too large. What size do you tie them? I agree with your ideas about getting them down tho with a small streamer and get in their face and strike zone. You are LUCKY to have shared a room with him for a semester. I took a lesson at a fly show with him. Really enjoyed it. Great guy and unbelievable angler!

    Sadly, in Maryland, they do not clip the adipose fin. Never made any sense to me. They also regularly stock wild self-sustaining trout streams (i.e. Little Falls) which is bone-headed in my opinion. This depletes the gene pool as well as allows the harvest of native fish which cannot be discerned from stockies because, you guessed it, they all have adipose fins...DNR can and must do better.
    Looks like you weren't giving the streamer any added action, but fishing it Euro-Style? Keep up the great work!

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  Год назад

      I am on the same page as you. This is common place throughout most states it seems. It is sad and hopefully one day they figure out a real best practice for how and where to stock.
      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Always nice to see other anglers who understand the ecosystems and decisions made on their behalf.

    Nice Mike! I think I may have been very close to you that day. Bummer I missed you! That rainbow was unusual. I believe they have put some fingerlings in, but that looked like a good size. I’ve either caught holdovers or real small ones. I like the micro streamers. I use a black and purple polar chenille with a black maribou tail. Silver bead. That was my 4th best fly last year. Hey Scooter! Love getting out in the snow. Just did again recently. Snow on ground and rain/freezing rain. Fish were still pretty active, especially on streamer. You will find that jig streamer will come around. Dead drifted, or jigged, and even slow stripped away from cover all work for me. As for the bows, they stock much much lower, but there is a wild population near dam. I would imagine he is from the wild population and is just down a little away from them. As for the drone, a little luck and a little skill lol. Tough to tell how close you are sometimes when high up. Can't beat the footage tho! Thanks for watching and tight lines!

      I think they put a bunch of fingerling rainbows there a few years back which makes sense because I’ve really started catching them there recently.

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  2 года назад

      Certainly possible, tough to say. I could believe it. At that point they are basically wild fish. I know the Falls Rd section is explicitly wild, and they are usually a bit darker. No matter what, a rare gem on the GP to get a wild or fingerling. Occasionally a get a true stocker too.

    • @tightliningmd
      @tightliningmd  2 года назад

      I think it could be a mixture of two. I believe from Falls Rd up is wild stream bred. I think some travel down. Then maybe they do stock fingerlings, and definitely stocked trout as you get like 6 miles below the dam. No matter what, always nice to fool a trout and put on in the net. Cool to see people having success as well on different styles but similar patterns, nice work! Good luck when you go out next!
