I have 4 Avid reels. 2 of them are Avid pros and they're great. I've taken one of them fishing in the salt several times with no problems. I just make sure to rinse it after every use and when I get back home I take it apart and clean it good. It still looks like new.

I worked in a fly shop and guided for years. Naturally i was able to test, use and buy some very expensive big name brand rods and reels. I was on a SAGE kick, then i was into some of WINSTONS rods. I bought a lot of rods from HARDY as well as THOMAS & THOMAS & a few others. A few of those rods are special for various reasons. Most of those reason are trips i took them on or BIG Trout i cought using them.
The rods and reels from Max catch in many cases are equally as good if not better performers than many of those big name, monster price tag rods. fact!

Really, you did a lot of name dropping, but you gave no details. Particular models, weights or length are not given, you also didn't mention how you used these expensive rod's. Were you nymphing, throwing big streamers, drifting, etc. Given the lack of substance, I'm guessing you're a troll who's never thrown a fly! P.S. Several guides I've crossed paths with do own a few Maxcatch rods and reels, not for their personal use, but for those newbies who are learning the game.

Obviously i struck a nerve. You clearly understood my point as well. Those guides, (many guides) hand the MaxCatch rods & a few other inexpensive rods like the Fenwick Aetos, & others to clients because they want to give them the best experience possible without overspending to do so.
I have thrown lines in seven states in fresh & saltwater.
This week has been good so far. The Zoo Cougar, Green & Black bead head Wooly buggers have worked really well. We also did well with a Crayfish pattern. Smallmouth love that fly. Two of six Browns over 21” one at 23”
      Happy clients.
Now try to smile and go get in the water. 🙂

They make some phenomenal rods and reels. If they had one of the BIG names on them, the price would be triple or better and people would line up to buy them. The Storm reel is better than some reels i have that cost over four times as much. never mind that the storm has backing, line & leader loaded and ready to rock.

I have a Maxcatch Premier purchased 4 years ago (the 8’4” three weight), it has same action as a spinning rod, so it was hard to get a good line pairing. After a couple uses, the chrome plating starts wearing off the inside edge of the tip top guide (where the fly line rubs), so now it has more friction when playing a fish - you can see bare copper underneath. The action and big diameter of the grip is pretty good for the price, but the cheap tip top guide killed it from me ever buying another one. I do have a Maxcatch Avid fly reel that is very nice, good value.

      @barry4fish 11 месяцев назад

@@Adirondacktroutbum No I haven’t. I only paid about $40 for it at the time. It might be easier to just replace the tip top guide myself - cost about the same, after you consider shipping, etc.

Heres my $0.02 worth on Maxcatch. If you dont want to read my long review then the summary is they have good rods and are good to deal with.
I have been using their gear for three years on New Zealand trout and saltwater species. I am an active 60 yr old who has flyfished for 50 years.
Put aside your peeing competitions about fly gear brands. Buy what you can afford and spend time on the water. Until recently my small-water rod was a 40 year old 6wt. An experienced fisher with that old rod will catch more than an occasional fisher with their $1000 rod.
So to Maxcatch. I buy at the upper end of their range. If I had less cash I would happily go lower.
Saltpro 9wt and Sparta reel: Does all I want for flats and channel fishing. Not much finesse, but bags of power. Gets large flies out there even if windy. Also used on Tongariro River this year with a SA Sonar full sink line. Heavy water 4lb plus fish...good at getting deep sunk line aerialised again. BTW have Rio, Airflo and Maxcatch saltwater lines. All cast well.
10ft 3wt In Touch Competition Pro Euronymph rod. Taught myself to euronymph last year. Lovely rod. Has handled trout to over 4 lb effortlessly. Increasingly a favourite method. The Avid Pro reel that I already had has fine tolerances and I dont need a full cage reel for the fine euro fly line. Caught a beautiful fish on it yesterday sight fishing, so its accuracy is fine.
Skyhigh gold 6wt and avid pro reel.: My go to outfit for medium to larger rivers. Does it all. Mostly I indicator nymph with it, but I regularly swing medium wet flies down and across as well. Best all round rod I have ever used.
Skyhigh 4wt. In dark green. Bought it to replace my 40 yr old small water rod. It is a joy to use. Caught 3 solid fish on it yesterday after the Euronymph session. Biggest was 5lb hard fighting rainbow. Had 4lb tippet. Rod was perfect. Accurate and delicate. Just used the Maxcatch freebie line... However, it is one of their better ones. I have used Cortland and SA lines for years and the Maxcatch one is great and perfectly matched the rod. This will be my dry fly rod.
Their service throughout the rod and other gear purchases has been great. Just use Standard Freight. To NZ it is FedEx and is 7 to 10 days China to my small rural NZ address.
...and yes, I still use other brands, but if I only fished Maxcatch that would be just fine.

Nice review, I'm looking for a new beach rod, I have a sage trout Switch, and it was pain to pay over 700 for it. Im starting to fish the beach and inlet water in louisiana. I want a 10wt spey rod/surf rod. But I dont want to pay 900-1200 for one. But I do want to make sure I don't buy a rod and then buy another because of the lack in performance. Do you recommend a rod from max catch for this application, I target redfish, black drum, flounder, and speckled trout. I snapped a 8wt last year on a 25lb bull red. I've been looking at the sage igniter 10wt and the beaulah 10wt surf rod. Im open to advice and guidance on my next purchase

So, I have not used any of Maxcatch’s 10w rods or reels. I can say everything I have used from the 3w to the 6w in both rods and reels have been of excellent quality and reliability. I hope that helps.

Their gold lines are lovely to use. Their top saltwater line is also great. The revelation for me is their cheap 6ips full sink line. I use it in 6wt. Still good after 2 seasons and many fish. It is not 6ips though, but treat it as a medium-fast sink. You will think you are a casting champion when you use it. Medium rivers, medium streamers...cant go wrong.
