You can tell Taylor is young and doesn’t have his tempo down for the song yet. He might have been nervously speeding up for many reasons. He has always talked about his struggles with playing for Dave who he has referred to as the greatest drummer in rock and roll history which may have contributed. But it can also be noted that it is hard to maintain a steady tempo while playing faster notes, in this case 16th notes on the hi-hat for most of the song, along with dynamic changes. Crescendoing while playing fast is a recipe for speeding up if you haven’t completely mastered what you are playing yet. It’s actually nice to see this from a young Taylor Hawkins. It shows that everyone is human and we all make mistakes in our development. What a great drummer that I will always see as a huge inspiration to my own love for drumming. Rest in peace.❤️
Dave sets the tempo for the song when he starts on guitar alone. I can only imagine Taylor sitting back there going "Oh no, bro!" as he launches into the 16th-note hihat beat that is half again as fast as the studio version. Young bands playing live are notorious for playing too fast. It just happens.

Breathe out

Out of your head

If everything could ever feel this real forever
