There’s a lot more depth of their characters and important scenes like how Alex needs time to reflect and understand that he’s bi, cute scenes, thoughts Alex has, the multiple texts between them that really shows their personalities and also the intimate scenes between them are so much more realistic with them being awkward because it’s a first for both of them so they take time to understand what they like and how to do things. In the UK, people weren't directly familiar with Bowie knives, so in the early decades of his career only a minority of people knew the origin of his stage name. Of those people who did know, only some knew how to say it properly. Since it wasn't his birth name and he was a nice guy, you didn't hear him correct people very often. When presenters said his name on TV and radio, most of time they'd use a pronunciation to rhyme with "Cowie" (not a particularly common name but one thousands of people have, so you can see how that happened). Both pronunciations floated around for decades, but we've mostly trained ourselves out of the mispronunciation now. Some people can't shake the wrong one, though.

The chemistry between the leads was incredible and the pacing was so much fun. There were parts that had me blushing and giggling like a school girl. Very few rom coms can do that. Would have loved it to be longer. Like a 6 episode series like TSITP. I think both are great, and I want a sequel, but only with these two actors.

I liked the book fine when I read it but I wasn't clamoring for a movie so he's honestly most of the reason I watched. And even though it felt rushed and like it was missing depth for both characters and the relationship, I thought it was fine and Nicholas did shine. I loved the staging for the long-distance conversations and the New Years dancefloor scene was pretty cool. I also like that they cut some of the slower political things from the book, but I also hate the change to how everything is made public (especially since Alex should be smart enough not to talk to a reporter without confirming it's off the record, especially when he's representing the campaign).

knowing that the journalist was added for the movie makes a LOT of stuff make sense. like how weird and pushy his character was, and how obvious it was that he was gonna cause trouble for alex and henry out of jealousy. the movie was silly and tropey overall, but that whole thread felt contrived in a way that didn't match the rest of the story. i still enjoyed it a LOT, but i'm glad to know the story is handled with more deftness in the original book.
like my biggest gripe with the movie was when the journalist was being interviewed and was called out about the timing of his article, and he suddenly gets all "idk what you're implying omg." if the guy was a halfway competent journalist (especially an unscrupulous one like we're supposed to believe), he'd have had an answer to that incredibly obvious question ready to go. something like "it's my job to synthesize large amounts of information very quickly so i can keep my readers informed" or what have you. the obvious fumble was unnecessary and hand-holdy and kind of annoying.

I did enjoy the movie for what it was, I’m a huge fan of the book so I do have lots of issues with it as well. But I had fun watching it, I really believe it should’ve been a limited series instead of a movie so much more could’ve been included and they could’ve delved more in depth into all the characters (and included June and Luna 😭😭😭) but I really missed Alex’s discovery of his bisexuality as someone who is bisexual Alex’s journey meant a lot to me. There was a scene I really wanted (I knew it wasn’t going to included so I wasn’t too disappointed) it’s a scene between Alex and Bea (Henry’s sister) where bea openly talks about grief and how it feels to lose a parent so young and even though I knew it’d get cut I was a little disappointed it’s one of my favorite scenes in book 💔

I think some of these changes, like Alex already having some experience with guys, and being more active in the political sense, is because he and Henry are supposed to be older than their book counterparts. A CLIFF NOTE'S VERSION OF THE STORY! That's the perfect way to describe it! It's so hard for me to put into words why exactly I didn't like this movie, and it's exactly because it just doesn't go into depth like the book does. Yeah, that's gonna happen in most movie adaptations, but still. I was super hyped for this movie and it just fell flat. Alex is such an interesting character in the book, especially when it comes to his personal relationships with June and his parents, and they just get rid of all of that. (BRING BACK ELLEN AND OSCAR DIVORCE GODDAMMIT!! Genuinely my biggest problem with this movie, argh)
(also the audiobook narrator mispronouncing Bowie has annoyed me for YEARS. absolutely adore the audiobook otherwise lol)
Fun fact: Queen Mary being replaced with the king is because at the start of the movie's production, Queen Elizabeth was still alive and I guess they didn't want to insult her. But then a few months later there was a king anyways. Oops.
PRAYING that the sequel delves deeper into some book-related plots that weren't brought up in the first movie. I have more hopes for the sequel, honestly. If they don't have enough canon source material to base it off of, then they can't disappoint me! Right?!!!!
