I love Henry's sense of humor, the turkey scene Alex says "can you imagine how wasteful" and Henry says "maybe this conversation. or when he says "don't ask mom for a pet if you cant take care of him", or "you are just as ghastly as I imagine", or when Alex asked why is he woked up he says "because a balland call me a 3AM",or "I seriously doubt that" when Alex said he was thinking. It's his way of showing how much he cares about the devastatingly handsome young peasant boy who really captured his heart, making him feel alive for the very first time. In the book they describes Zhara as a part of the family, she knows Alex since he was 5 years old, so in this case is like an Aunt!
"I'm fully aware that this is totally idealistic, but at the same time just give me this." I wish we idealists could just say this, over and over again like a broken record, until real life becomes closer to humanity's highest ideals....
Loved your reaction. Thank you for sharing it with us. I literally have lost count of how many times I've rewatched the full movie or selected scenes, as well as every reaction video I can find (even of these, I have rewatched some of them twice now). No matter how often doesn't seem to diminish the emotional impact that hits me (or how the jokes still make me laugh). I tear up (with happy tender tears) all the way through. There are many points where I say to myself "it wouldn't happen that way" or "where are all the attendants and servants?" or "how could Alex get into the palace so easily?" (to this latter, the book does require him to force his way in.) But by now, I just sit back and enjoy it as a modern fairy tale where they get to make the rules, HAVE to make the rules, to make the story flow and to do so to make it fit in the required time allowed. One of the reactions I saw commented when Alex "stormed" the castle, was this was the "Mr. Darcy in the rain moment" from the latest production of Pride & Prejudice. In Austen's story, an outspoken lower middle class heroine clashes with the rich disdainful (and shy) nobleman Darcy, until they learn more about each other. RWRB is an updated version of the knight in white armor rescuing the member of royalty from the castle (even if most the "castle" walls in this version not made of stones but are built of tradition and self-imposed standards). There is even the probably unintended Cinderella reference of "The Kiss" happening at just after the stroke of midnight, and in this case, it is the prince who flees the scene.
The "making love in Paris" scene made me wish there was an Oscar category for Best Lovemaking Scene or something, because both the actors and their intimacy coordinator absolutely nailed it! It manages to be absolutely gorgeous-looking, touchingly intimate and smoking hot all at once. Watching it made me feel like Jodie Foster's character in "Contact", stammering "...they should have sent a poet!" at the splendour she is witnessing.
"I know this is totally idealistic..." Well, the author did write it as a cure for all of the bad things that happened in 2016 (ahem!); she wanted us to have a happy place, and she gave it to us.
Zahra never used that phone call because she and Shaan (sp?) had agreed to never use their private phones for work calls. But this was an emergency, clearly. :)
Yes, thank you for sharing your reaction to this movie that I fell in love with! Your commentary is on point. I saw the movie before the book, but got the book right after. Both complement each other very well. I do hope there will be a sequel
When Casey McQuiston started her novel, she was in large part prompted top react to the election of Trump in November 2016. As a way to ward off the omens she laid out her canvas in the most idealistic way, thumping her nose a the MAGA crowd and its ultra right agenda. In the novel the President is a woman, the First Hubby is a Latino, the VP is a black man, the UK’s PM is a black woman. The VP’s granddaughter and the President’s son have dated (they don’t anymore, but have remained best friends). Henry’s best mate and confidant is a flamboyant black entrepreneur and philanthropist. And McQuiston herself appears in the film (sitting next to Ellen Claremont and Zahra when a concession speech is contemplated: shades of the train scene in Heartstopper season 1 episode 8 ! McQuiston’s story is outrageously improbable and idealistic, but hey ! When the clouds of fascism start converging, the immediate reaction is to look for light and bright colours. The book’s spirit of inclusiveness and defiance is retained. The movie director is gay, and many of the characters are LGBTQ+. We don’t know for sure about the MCs (some say Taylor is bi and Nicholas is straight but a staunch ally at the same time), but that doesn’t matter one bit. They are totally believable in their roles and that’s what counts. The actor who plays Miguel Ramos identifies himself as sexually fluid, Amy the secret service agent (a trans woman in the book) is played in the film by a trans woman. The actress who plays the UK’s PM is a lesbian in real life. And, as a nice bit of ‘who cares anyway’ irony, the rigidly straight king of England is played by one of UK’s best known gay men and indefatigable LGBTQ+ advocates.
The scene where they "make love" is so intimate that I've seen even gay men reacting seem really flustered and surprised. I thought it was beautiful but it did feel like I was intruding on a very private moment. The chemistry between the two actors is amazing.
I enjoyed your reaction to the movie! I loved the film. The two main characters had an amazing chemistry and it really made the movie that much more enjoyable. Thanks for posting! ✌🏻😉✌🏻
Be sure to watch passed the credits next time you watch. There is a bonus scene there, and also a dedication to Taylor Zakhar Perez’ (Alex) sister Kristy, who died of cancer a few months ago and never got to see her brother’s success.
I too think Henry lying the sun like that would become a red lobster in no time. But then I think to myself that the actor playing Henry has the IDENTICAL skin type as the character he is portraying, and I would assume they had to do several takes, so whatever sunscreen or whatever he is using would "work" as well as this fictional Henry. (Maybe Alex saved his life unintentionally by getting Henry to leave the raft so soon.)
So glad you liked the movie. I loved your reactions-complete with pillow hugging!! I felt the same way about the ending. Both book and movie ended too abruptly. I suppose it meant that they both found their home in each other. But I didn’t get that “ahhh” or “aha” moment I was looking for. I too thought the movie was over too soon. I wanted it to go on longer. And yet the movie was 2 hours long, unheard of for a rom-com.
Just laighed when ypu mentioned the most unrealistic scene so far. I thoght you meant that there wiuld be some paparazzi around the lake house, but instead you mentioned Henry’s skin😂. Thanks a lot for your reaction. I understand that some might find the sex scene uncomfortable, but I think it was ‘ a love making scene’ that was so beautiful. You seemed to be surprised when Henry sang. Nicholas really is a good singer irl, but he tried hard to ‘butcher’ the song like Henry did😂. Thanks again!❤😊
Great reaction. It was so enjoyable. But I notice one thing....... People not from the USA get a bit upset if we Americans do not show deference to royalty. Sorry. But that is who we are. We are under no obligation to show any deference at all to a Prince of England. Good manners , yes. But to us they are just regular people. The woman in charge of getting her Boss reelected overtakes any protocol she is to show toward Henry. At least she did leave with a a recognition of his Title. ....... ha ha . But I think that was for comedic reasons...... Thanks for the reaction.
Loved your reaction. Thank you. Love this film. And just FYI, campaigns prepare a victory & concession speech for the candidate, but the candidate themselves never look at them until the last minute. Superstition. And, of course, when the candidate does finally look at either one, they change things. Bill Clinton was notorious for changing and adding to his speeches whilst giving them - much to the consternation of his staff. But then, when your the Prez, everyone else just has to deal with it.
I'm so glad you did reaction for this movie. Its've become my comfort movie that I rewatch over and over again. I personally like the movie more than the book and that might be because I've fallen in love with the movie first before I bought the book to read, so I feel like the book progressed so slow with a lot of Alex POV and political elements. I prefer to know more about Henry's side.
I think that heart cushion really helped you😉 I don't know where did they find these two lead actors, but they did a fantastic job! The chemistry, intimacy is perfect! On that scene , they really were making love! It wasn't just a s*e*x. It was the first time that I saw this gay s*e*x scene so beautiful. Most of them are very quick and rushy. And from behind! It really showed that it was the first time for Alex ,and the first time for Henry with the one he is in love with. I have red the book last year. I mean... great adaptation from the book. And, I think that the museum was a sign that he could feel that he could easily and without fear walk among people and be himself. Dance with someone you like without anyone watching or judging you. And also, don't forget that Henry always wanted to be a writer. So I was not surprised by the emails he sent to Alex! He really knows what to write and how to write!
OMG you watch this movie..yesss...🤗🤗💕💕 Its really good queer movie, as a novel reader i love this adaptation even though ofc there is a part in the book that i wish can fit in the movie but im fine with that...also this movie is make my standar in term of bl drama/movie is too high...i cant enjoyed the ongoing drama anymore 😖😅
The love making scene was very beautiful and tastefully done most movies get hung up on showing way too much s in nudity and the motions ..This left a lot to the imagination. I felt Zahra was rude to the Prince it was too much and the King just as rude to Alex
I don’t know what sort of expections people had for this film because is far surpassed mine. I mean sure if you were waiting for some cinematic masterpiece about the Queer Experience TM (aka struggle and suffering) then you’d probably be disappointed but this is a silly little rom-com. Don’t we deserve those too? It was funny and heartwarming. It had good acting, Uma Thurman was amazing as always and goddddd the chemistry was carrying this thing on its back. Adaptation wise it was pretty good. They did a phenomenal job with the budget and time limit they had! Most of the changes were understandable (except a few glaring once that I just don’t get) and the story was tonally consistent with the original novel. As far as adaptations go this did a pretty good job. Only thing I flat out hate is Miguel because he's so damn annoying and also him getting his hands on their emails… how? How would he even know those existed never mind getting his hands them. They already had a good antagonist so why this change? Also as much as I love Alex’s speech (it’s a great speech and he drops some truths in there) it makes the whole thing with the king's plan to deny everything not make sense because Alex already confirmed the relationship… As always I really enjoyed your reaction!
Yeah: book Alex would never, in a billion years, have confirmed shit without Henry’s direct knowledge and agreement. Its the only thing in the movie I can’t stand, tho the speech was lovely. It’s almost like outing him without his consent again, ya know? Book Alex would never even consider it. It works out, because Henry doesn’t mind, and was grateful to get to see him standing up for them while Henry himself was being rather forcibly sequestered. But I still loved book Alex for the fact that saying anything to the public without Henry wasn’t an option he ever even considered. Alex still gives a lovely speech in the book, with Henry’s consent and with him by his side - the “consummate politician’s spouse,” behind him on the stage giving him silent support.
Like many of the other critics on RUclips--most of whom are really just reviewers--you have a tendency to talk over important moments in the film--as for instance when Alex makes his speech about his relationship with Henry. Beyond that, I find you not nearly assertive enough about what you think.
@@JeanetHenning I just wanted to counteract by saying that I thought you did a very good job...yes, it is unfortunate that all reactors talk over important moments, but that is the difference between a "reaction" and a "review". Kudos to you.

Yes big credits to the leads in particular, they made this very real.
Agreed!!

I loved this movie, even better than the book. I wish it were longer even. But it was more a fairytale than reality. Texas certainly wouldn’t flip.
As a Texas resident, it's REALLY SAD that the most unbelievable part of this whole fairy tale is that Texas would go blue. :(
There was a time when we thought Texas would be purple at least. Perhaps someday. @@caerjones6693
