Thanks for this (fellow Z900er here). Lane filtering (under 15 mph) is going to be legal here in Colorado in August so these tips are great. That said not afraid of the technical challenge, but more about cagers road raging about it.

@agentszero IKR! Why do people take everything so personal? It has to be bad for mental health.

I live in New Zealand and filtering and splitting are both legal.
Yet 80% of cages don't know it and 100% of what you call trucks and we call Utes (4 by 4)
drivers are oversize children and try to take me out daily. So keep ya eyes open.
Im glad this law is being passed around the world as 30% of bike accidents are rear end crashers and result in a lot of head injuries. Our governments need to inform road uses why its legal. Enjoy your new found freedom and a very good vid on the topic ✌

Welcome to the lane filtering club! Here in Australia it’s been legal for years in most states. I’ve never had any major problems with car drivers getting angry as they are used to it here. If car drivers want to get all cut because they don’t get to go to the front there’s an easy solution, get a motorbike! Motorbikes reduce traffic congestion by being one less vehicle in the way of where your trying to get to.

I had no idea that Az had changed that Law. I lived there in 1988-89 and split/filtered lanes the whole time and never even got looked at by the cops.

Arkansas law is vague on lane splitting and filtering. They do allow 2 motorcycles to ride side by side in a single lane. Many people have told me to maybe only do it in moderation and only when its safe. I think i may start testing the waters with it and see how it goes

The major problem with taking off so quickly when the light turns green are other drivers trying to beat the red light. Most motorcycle accidents happen at intersections.

i have yet to try out lane filtering even though its legal here in New Zealand because I've only been riding for 3 months. but i've heard if you can't filter to the front and are midway thru your filtering to the front, you can just indicate to the left or right lane so a courteous driver can let you into their lane.
edit; ill definitely try your tips when i am more confident in traffic.

It makes sense in all states . Lane split and filter all 2 lane or more all speeds like California and the world .saves gas .more gas available for cars . More space for cars to advance . The person that the car driver has to do business with is going to be there not stuck in traffic . No road closed or jams that delay car drivers because a car rear ended a motorcycle . Pay attention to hit a motorcycle or cut him off and make him fall or crash you pay . You try to escape stopped traffic your on cellular phone camera they get part of settlement payout . everyone needs some extra money. Your insurance goes up .

They just passed this in Colorado. You’re only allowed to lane filter when traffic (cars) are stopped.
My main concern is that motorcyclists will start lane splitting. I can definitely see a rise in traffic accidents from this.
As a “cager” I don’t care if you cut infront of me. My main concern is safety it’s one more thing I need to keep an eye on.

Congrats on the legalized filtering in AZ! I'm in Texas, and we've been waiting for it to be formally legalized here for decades. We still do it when the circumstances are right, or for safety reasons (e.g., slowing or stopped traffic on the highway, you never want to be at the back of that line on a motorcycle!). I made a video a few weeks ago in that scenario when there was a 10-mile queue of stopped traffic in IH-10! ( ruclips.net/video/ZXKsD-HqeoY/видео.html )
I've only been hassled by cops for filtering a couple of times in over 20 years. As long as it's done safely and at moderate speeds, then LEO's don't seem to care.
The real problem here is that our cagers are extremely aggressive and territorial, and they will often try to wreck you for "cutting the line." It will require a lot of time and driver re-education before they realize that lane filtering is prudent, more efficient, and it's generally safer for motorcyclists than sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

That's good to know cops in Texas don't strictly enforce it. I'm a new rider and not sure if I'm yet ready to lane filter, but if I'm stuck in a traffic jam and it's hot then I'm lane filtering. Yeah, my biggest concern are aggressive drivers trying to cut me off as I'm filtering. We definitely have those in Texas. Fortunately I live in a rural area so I don't deal with much traffic issues.

It's funny that we ride the same bike (I have a 2020 Z900) and that we both ride it very similarly. I almost always keep it in sport with the range and trip 1 set to the dash, which gets cleared every time I fill the tank... usually only see 100 miles until the gas light comes on 😂🥺. Oh and of course the dark background on the display. I live in Seattle and get stuck in rain somewhat regularly, so my alternative to sport isn't rain or road mode... it's rider with F power and KTC set to 3. Rain set to low power mode is almost painful after getting familiar with the power of the Z900 and level 3 traction has so far kept me out of any trouble over manholes, tar snakes in the road, etc. In a heavy Seattle downpour.
How many miles have you put down so far? I'm creeping up on 8K already and I just got the bike in February.
Some small things I'd have to complain about with my Z900...
    1.
Occasionally the clock will reset itself. Apparently a pretty common problem possibly related to full handlebar lock.
    2.
The menu and going through settings is seriously annoying.
    3.
Rider mode can't be adjusted for traction while riding (even while letting off the gas) if you get caught in the rain unless you're pulled over. Seems to only work if the bike is off for me.
Overall, I freaking love this machine and your content! Keep doing your thing out there bro! We had a loooong summer in Seattle but I sometimes wish we had your kinda weather up here too!
P.S. what tank bag are you rocking there???

I'm in Houston, and I've been hoping for lane filtering to be legalized here. I still do it when the circumstances are right or if I'm in the back of a line of slowing or stopped traffic on the highway... just so I don't get rear-ended. 😉👍 --QM

So you just said if the traffic is stopped it's illegal. You just went right between a bunch of stopped traffic. Was that legal? This leaves too much to chance. My bet, these laws don't last long.
