- How to filter through traffic on a motorcycle.
On the way back from these guys passing their tests I decided to do a lesson on lane splitting or filtering.
The basic rule regarding zig zags is you cannot park on them, approaching the crossing you cannot pass the foremost part of the vehicle nearest to the crossing that has stopped for the purpose of letting pedestrians cross or the vehicle closest to the crossing that is moving.

It's always lovely how you help peoples' confidence just talking to them nice and calm like you're just a bunch of friends out for a ride. Nice one.

Nicely done. Instilling confidence, reiterating use of the back brake at slow speeds and recognising good practice are all parts of being a great trainer.
I remember when I took my Mod2 test; returning to the test centre we came upon heavy morning rush hour traffic. I started shoulder check to start filtering. The examiner told me to let him through first. he led the filtering. On arrival at the test centre (when telling me I'd passed without any minors) he told me he'd jumped in there in case I'd done something stupid to fail my test hahaha. Good fella.

Same for my test, but we didn't do any road sections... all in basically a carpark... passed and it was have at it.
There are some decent examiners out there. I didn’t stop completely at a stop sign on my test but when we got back he just gave me a rollocking about it and passed me with just a couple of minors. 😬
Nice one.....filtering is not expected on the test but it is allowed (if done properly) so I reckon the examiner was spot on...why ruin a good pass when you could actually just have a bit of training.
TOTALLY agree with the trainer ALWAYS filter slowly. Been a biker for over 40 years and had a few arguments with other bikers about this. Its ALL about getting from A to B safely.

Also, loud pipes. All of my bikes had and will have loud pipes. The first bike I had without a decent pipe when I was a 16 year old spotty teenager on a moped, I had so many close calls. When I got my 2 stroke 125 and put a decent loud pipe on it, I very rarely had issues. Only idiots that shouldn't drive were a hazard.
@@lukey3507 Don't bet on them hearing you coming from loud pipes, they're in their cosy metal box with aircon blowing and music pumping, the noise from your pipes isn't in front of you, it's behind you

Filtering is a twice daily activity for me on my commute. Most drivers don't know you're there until you pass them (in my opinion), some move over for you and sometimes it's quite comical how far they get over but I'm always grateful and fewer still do their best to get in your way; when this happens they always seem to forget that if they're in your way on one side then there's a big gap on the other and guess which way I'm going to go!
I actually wish they'd stay put instead of becoming unpredictable or erratic. We'll sort ourselves out :-)

Great instructions👍 . Also I always stop filtering a few cars back from a pinch point, junction/roundabouts etc.
@Travis bickle Whether you're a car driver or a rider people do stupid things at roundabouts so I also would not filter right up to the roundabout. A similar situation can occur at traffic lights and some drivers see it as a competition between them and the bike.
@Travis bickle On a round about, I get behind the first car on the round about. And block the second cars path so they can't under cut me and try racing me off the line. You must do that with zig-zag crossings or it's a matter of time until a copper give you some points.

Good call with the zig-zags! I only found that out a few years back after I got Told Off by Police I overtook on the zig-zags - it was when I was researching what I'd done wrong that I found out I actually hadn't done anything wrong. It also told me that the Police aren't always experts at the more intricate aspects of traffic law...
I love that you actually did it on these learners lessons. I was taught the theory and safety of it, but didn't encounter traffic during my lessons, so didn't really get a proper chance to practice until I had already passed my test.

I didn't know that about zigzag lines! It's the only time I don't filter and not crossing solid white lines of course.
In a filtering scenario you can cross a solid white line if it's the line nearest you, it's safe to do so and the traffic you're passing is stationary.
@@ashleyreynolds6604 Case law has established that a vehicle with the engine running is still regarded as being driven. A stationary vehicle for the purposes of legislation is not based on whether it is moving but whether it is under the control of a driver. That is the reason why using a mobile phone with your hands is still an offence in a queue of traffic even if you turn off the engine, such as at a level crossing.
Besides which, the law states you can can only cross a solid line to pass stationary traffic "if necessary to do so" (Regulation 26 of TSRGD 2002). The point of the exception is situations such as a broken down vehicle, which would effectively close the road if you could not cross the line. And so where you can also fully return into the correct lane immediately after the obstruction, unlike where you have a queue of traffic ahead you need to pass.
If filtering over a solid line you will not be able to convince a police officer or a judge that it was necessary to do so instead of simply waiting for traffic to resume moving like everyone else.
You may be unlucky to be stopped doing it, but it is strictly illegal. It does not even fall to the usual test of "what would a competent driver do," the law is explicit in this area so there is no defence.
And it is also worth noting that legally you have to keep the offside of the vehicle inside the solid line, which means the whole of the bike. So even if your wheels are inside the line, you are technically breaking the law if you bars are over it.

Oh the memories...! About 30 years ago. coming out of town to the lights at Castle Marina when the silver Audi decided he'd waited too long and yanked it round, out of the queue just as I came up on his rear! Turned his door inside out, collected three broken ribs from his rain gutter and had to let go. Supermanned over his roof, down the bonnet and created a crumpled heap outside the (then Lucas) place opposite. "Are you alright mate...." Vorsprung Durch F..kwit!!!!!!!

Great clip. I think it must be one of hardest things to teach. You can mention the dangers but it's all about time on the seat learning how traffic flows. Plus always that one knob who opens there door. Great clip 😊
And know the bike... some have fixed mirrors the width of the bike and other can wiggle with Bar mirrors.

@@richardshilling2958 Absolutely! There is a traffic offence of wilful obstruction, and deliberately moving your vehicle to obstruct another would probably come under that definition. But getting the police to take any action...? Not much chance, I'd say, especially if no collision occured.
@@mightybeanstick9872 oh, I don't know. I reported someone who blocked my car from overtaking 800m from some roadworks on a motorway. He just pulled out to block the outside lane.
The police turned up at his work to give him a talking too....
In Australia they don't allow Learners to filter. My motorcycle instructor never taught us how to filter. I've been doing it for years without proper training (never caused any problems, but having an instructor like this would have helped me so much!) Thanks for this video Sir
Been riding 44 years, best filtering vid I've seen at the right speeds, I know you were covering them with great advice, but one thing you forgot to warn them about is other motorcycles filtering , some motorcyclist filter at crazy speeds, nearly got taken out by another motorcyclist a few years ago, so now I check for them a long way back and keep checking with an escape plan in mind just for this situation.👊🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍👍

Here in Australia learner motorcycle riders aren’t allowed to filter, only when they have passed their test is it legal. Still, we’ve got fairly liberal laws about what you can ride as a learner. Most states have a list of learner approved motorcycles (LAMs), it all depends on power to weight ratio, you can even ride a lower power restricted 650. It’s a lot different to when I was a L plater in England in the 1960s, I rode a 650 Triumph T110 and a Norton 650SS as soon as I passed my test at 16! The test was pretty simple as well.

I wish I had an instructor this pleasant when I did my CBT recently, would have filled me with far more confidence once I started riding solo
I was just mesmerised by the triumphs digital display. Awesome. Good demo too.
Good stuff from them. I've always found this sort of slow riding easier than the mod 1 exercises! Real moving gaps to make real time decisions about vs even gaps between cones. And remember everyone - gaps are traps and always be inquisitive about why it is there!
One potential danger not mentioned is a driver deliberately blocking you off because they think filtering is illegal and they are 'doing their bit'. Used to happen occasionally when I used to ride.
I’m just getting into riding (in California, US, where it is legal), is there any tips you have for me in the case of sudden cutting off? Like cut clutch rear brake or something?
@@TheDireLulu It is legal here in the UK too. Despite some drivers being unaware of it. Sadly there isn't much you can do except keep your eyes peeled and watch for drivers moving out, and braking if necessary. They are unlikely to do it suddenly because they risk a collision and getting their paintwork scratched LOL.

Speed when filtering. I was taught if you cant stop in a car length you are going to fast. That lesson has saved me a few times especially when a car door has suddenly opened.
Always be aware.

Really good advice on speed, rear brake and watching out for cars drifting/changing lanes and pedestrians diving through slow/stationary traffic.
Well done I enjoyed the lesson. I wasn't taught any splitting doing my full licence training jan23. But now I am doing it just like in your vid very satisfying feeling.
Novice here. I thought filtering was to pass in to a gap ahead, maybe much further ahead, but you always had a closer gap in case. It does look like the 3 bikers were just meandering around the white line. 0:33 The aqua colour Corsa braked and allowed the 3 bikers in front to avoid damage to their car(Not that you would deliberately scratch their car, but maybe they've just bought it).
Probably not such an issue in Nottingham but in london 19 out of 20 cars are happy to make room for a filtering biker but one in 80 will deliberately try to block your progress, I put this down to 3 things,1, jealousy, they're stuck in traffic and they're jealous of you, 2, malice, they're angry and they simply hate bikers, 3, ignorance, I've had several (usually middle aged women) wind their windows down and scream something about "Pushing in" they simply don't know what filtering is and apply rules from a queue at the dole office

I ride past motorcyclists all the time sat in queues of traffic. It's not normally taught for standard tests so brilliant stuff.
Yeah that's me I only filter when I'm in a hurry or not really making any progress. That being said if another motorcycle passes me then usually that spurs me on to follow.

Usual for me to. Not so much that I can't but I live in a rural area and don't get to the city that often. The other reason is giving the left hand a rest from all the gear changes which I'm no longer used to in stop/start traffic. On our Honda STs we have to make sure the mirrors can fit through as they are same height as car mirrors.

That is a nice way to do it, someone is doing the work, but be aware some vehicle move back like a wave in water.

easy in front of an instructor remember my old 125 from 6 years ago i didnt stall at all and wasnt even nervous whiles doing it i was filtering riding with no problems. it was when i was finnaly on my own riding a week later i started stalling it everywhere getting so nervous to ride it i would never filter at all after a while my confidence came i met other bikers i started riding with them i never forgot what one of them old school bikers told me its no such thing as a late biker because we get there safely not quickly. i ride 900cc now and make sure if people cant see me they will hear me.

Super helpful video, I'm planning on moving to the UK to join my Fiancé. I've been riding for over a year now but I have never been in a place where filtering was legal.

Regarding Zig Zags. I was recently marked down on my Rospa test because I pulled up alongside a bus that was stopped at a zig zag controlled crossing on a red light. I knew I could not pass the bus - and I didn't. I waited for the bus to pull off and performed the over take once outside the zig zags. I was subsequently informed that once my tyre passed the rear bumper of the bus it was classed as "an overtake". To be honest I didn't argue the point but it was the difference between a gold and silver. Great video as usual by the way.
That's unfair, there's a big difference between pass and pull alongside. The rule is there so pedestrians don't get hit, how can that happen when you're just next to the vehicle. Jeez! I'm promoting you to gold! 😂

Considering the legislation states not "to pass ahead of the foremost part" I'd agree that that was an incorrect understanding of the legislation.

Yep learnt this the hard way the other day filtering at around 20 then a car decided to pull out almost hit him but luckily my instructor taught me how to stay calm and to slowly lift my rear brake slightly so I dont skid when doing a emergency stop

@@user-rf9me7xm1w I took my bike test in Wallington (South south London) the day after my 17th birthday in 1981 - just the one test then...the test centre was in the middle of a square with access to two sides - I went round one way with the examiner sprinting from one side to the other to see me at each corner then the other way and he held up his hand for an emergency stop. I passed and I’m still biking 40 years later.
Much the same as my test then Martin, the only difference being that my test was taken in 1966 ! and I still enjoy riding very much. (Triumph Street twin).
Nicely done with some good advise. The point about cars moving over, if they see you is true but you do get the occasional driver that is intent on stopping you passing them and you have to be ready for that. I wish more instructors would do this and not leave it up to the rider to learn on their own after passing the test. (Bit like counter steering not being allowed to be taught. Though we all do it subconsciously when you know about it then it can be used to assist the rider when required.) You are more likely to do it, in this instance filtering, correctly under instruction and when you first do it there is likely to be a level of stress.
I'm not a fan of filtering , i passed my MOD2 back in Jan '24. But will do it, if it means i can keep moving, far safer than being stationary.
It's something not really encouranged at CBT and learner stage.
On the ride back home, my instructor said we would be filteering as traffic was heavy, he asked if i was ok with that, he lead,, but did say make your own decisions to go for gaps or not, ride your own ride, it was a little unerving, i could see in my mirrors a 'battenburg' liveyed bike coming through , i thought it was Police, made room for them .......turns out it eas my examiner who passed me not15 mins earlier, imagine doing something bad !
He was a top bloke, i went wrong a few times of router, but, he passed me still, saying its how I ride not where I rode, my abilty ,not getting the route wrong.
I'm a rider and I didn't know that. I always hung back on the entirety of the zig-zags.
The efforts some car drivers go to, to get one car ahead, I look at filtering as helping out. One less vehicle in the queue 😁

Two of the biggest hazards I find when filtering are pedestrians who don't look before crossing , even diving between the traffic many feet from an official pedestrian crossing and the large wing mirrors on vans and wagons which stick out right across the lane. You certainly need to keep your head on a swivel when filtering safely.BTW do you still ride the Pan or did it get traded in?
I'd say the biggest hazards are cyclists and other motorcyclists especially couriers or the menace that is food delivery drivers.
Still got the pan. Needs a battery then I'll take it for a play but it's basically retired now. 😔

Usually the ultra low speeds don't really warrant it. I may have said that just before a total stop, unless you can give me a time code?

I just wanted to check there wasn't a reason to use the rear instead of the front, but it sounds like that's not the case...just low speed / no need. Oh wow.. L plates riders can filter in the UK? As an Australian, my mind is blown as we can't.
Edit: We can when we get onto P plates or probationary license. But no instruction regarding when you are safe to do so and when you should not.
Essentially anyone on two wheels can filter. Generally, if theres a gap, you can probably go through it

In NSW, Australia you are only allowed to lane filter if you are a fully-licensed motorcyclist, NOT on L or P plates.

Beautifully done there, shame all riders don’t practice the same calm discipline manoeuvres as you.
So long as you don't do something unexpected and keep your speed down (with full observation and anticipation) then the risks will be low (but not absent).

Just curious does the instructor and the student have two way communication on these lessons, Or just the instructor?
ROSPA Aug ‘21 magazine - Read a good article for NOT using hazard lights when filtering as it’s not legal.
I however DO use my right indicator whilst filtering, my logic is that an “Amber flashing light” might help distinguish me from the sea of white lights in a car side mirror.
Two questions:
1) is this legal / correct use of right indicator?
2) Is this a benefit to other road users?
Assume that I am also checking people’s hands on steering wheel & direction of front tires whilst filtering - Thx in advance for your correspondence

In London I filter all the time. On ZigZags it is my understanding that you cannot overtake the lead vehicle, but after you gone over the crossing (but still on ZigZags) you CAN overtake. Am I correct or in error? I'm not a RUclips know-it-all, I genuinely look to improve my skills.

There is actually no restriction to overtaking as soon as you are on the crossing itself! People forget the whole purpose of that rule, and that is to stop you overtaking a car that has stopped for a pedestrian that you can't see. Sometimes the reasoning for these rules gets lost because everyone gets pedantic.

Hi Russ, love watching your vids they're always entertaining, informative and have helped me become the rider I am to today. Covered more than 100,000 miles in the 7 years I've been riding and still surviving (touch wood).
I'm curious though what you'd do in regards to filtering on solid white lines. I've not done it myself but I've seen other bikers do it. On one hand the highway code states you must not cross a solid white line however it also states that you can cross it if passing a vehicle travelling less than 10 mph if I recall correctly and for turning right into a drive way for example. So is filtering on solid white lines past stationary traffic legal?
Good question. The 10mph rule only applies to bicycles, horses or road maintenance vehicles. If the traffic is stationary it could be argued that you're allowed then but there's disagreements whether stationary means parked and/or stopped traffic. Highway code rule 129

What I've learned from experience is to never filter past the front car in an intersection or stop sign. Always stay right beside it's rear wheel at most and move with it. If you go in front of the car and you hesitate when you need to move, the car will just move into you as they're usually looking the other way and considering their path to be clear.
You can pull up at the front of a junction just fine if you have the ability to be recognised. It's not legal but I might pull sightly over the stop line to make myself more visible. Defensive driving ftw

I personally wouldn't filter on my test. Just so I can stretch the time out to the absolute minimum riding. Less chance of a cock-up.
Think of the majority of car tests, they're on a 40ish minute test and more than half will be in traffic. Then we wonder why so many new drivers crash in the first year.
What about bike boxes? If there is a marked junction before the pedestrian crossing, where they paint it green and put bike symbol in there, is it okay to filter to that? Are motorcyclists allowed to stop in them?
No. The only time you're allowed to stop in them is if the lights change and you can't safely stop behind the first line

I recently purchased Cosmo Moto @t - smart brake light that affixes to your helmet and detects when you are decelerating - braking or engine braking to light up and inform other road users of your presence and that you are slowing down. It also can be set up to emit a continuous light similar to that of the rear light on your motorbike whilst shining brighter if you are decelerating in addition it can be set up as a strobe/ continuous warning light as well. Have you thought about reviewing this as I believe that this is an invaluable safety aid in raising your visibility on the road at an affordable price for all motorcyclists. Please let me know your views.

I had to laugh at the comment about your students not being seen because the car drivers were busy texting. I've seen it so many times around the ring road. I guess those drivers are destined to learn the hard way and very likely at someone else's cost!
Good feedback, however no mention of alternative gaps giving more room especially alongside lorry. Much safer if you can time it so its only 2 abreast rather than a filling in a sandwich.
Variants include the width of the road and speed you're doing but sometimes, being between vehicles is actually safer because they're less likely to want to dive into the "empty lane" next to you if there's a gap.

I won't lane split any faster than 25 30 mph, here in California, but I see people lane split at 50 to 60 mph when cars are not moving much, to me that's suicidal but to each his own, here you have to watch before splitting for those crazy bikers, if they are behind you, they might be the ones hitting you, I just move over and let them pass, getting there 1 or 2 minutes later is much better than not getting there. My wife saw a guy pass her going over 50 mph, 2 seconds later someone in front of her changed lanes and the biker couldn't avoid it, he flew over 3 cars and landed on his ass, bike totaled, and lucky for him no broken bones from what my wife could tell. So, no splitting that fast for me....
Hey Russ, glad to see you teaching this stuff! With regards to filtering whilst traffic is moving - I find it safe to filter through when cars are adjacent to each other. Car drivers aren't the best at the noticing bikes but they seem to do pretty well noticing each other, so if I'm in-between I always feel safe that they aren't going to change lanes suddenly.
I am assuming at 1:17 you mean that you can filter all the way up to the car that is stopped at the lights, is that correct? If so, that's a new one to me! I just took those zigzags to mean that you shouldn't filter because there's a risk of some sort. In this case - the crossing.

Always been a bit unclear on the overtaking near a crossing rule,You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians,so do you view a cycle as a vehicle?...and what about a set of traffic lights on a main (or even dual carriageway) road that also doubles as a pedestrian crossing,would you filter to the front and maybe just sit behind the vehicle at the front or does it only apply when they have stopped at a request type crossing ie:it is not controlled by lights but the vehicles just stop when a pedestrian stands at the crossing
Glad I'm not the only one who wonders these things. I generally just stop between the first and second vehicle, or alongside the second one if there's not space between. I know I'll be gone before they've put their transmission back in gear anyhow.
I never filter around heavy vehicles
Phil M~Not a bad idea, nor do I and I drive them haha. Worst spot is directly below the passenger window because that is the worst blind spot. I don’t travel close to them on the freeway either, in case something falls off them, you never know. I always pass them quickly on my bike and then slow back down to cruising speed once I’m past them.
