    Uh... Asuna treats Kirito to dinner because she feels bad/embarassed that she misjudged him and assumed he had molested her in her sleep. Not out of some sort of weird gratitude that he hadn't molested her.

    I think what makes Asuna a perfect "yandere that isn't evil" is that she seems to genuinely think that's how you are meant to act. She KNOWS she's being a manipulative bitch, but she seems to think that's just what she's MEANT to do.
    At least extrapolating from the stuff with her parents, and the "HEY!! At least I PRETEND to be nice to people!", which gets said in almost a way that she isn't in any way upset or surprised by how Kirito is acting - she's just miffed that he isn't ALSO putting up a front while criticizing, as if he's being hypocritical. I've always read her as seeming to run off the assumption that everyone is either incompetent (e.g. Schmitt) or like her, and Kirito grabs her attention since he blatantly breaks that rule.
    It's a very, VERY believable outlook for an emotionally neglected rich 17 year old girl with uncaring parents.
    Also, shoutout to Asuna's older brother for maintaining his streak of "WAIT, HE EXISTS???" in Abridged, as far as I know, since I think they left the "Asuna stole his Nervegear" setup the same.

I'd argue she's probably experienced some sexual harassment through the game. also, I think maybe what she expected was groping, since I don't think it's possible to take off another players armour even if they're unconscious?? of course, that's still bad

    • @cpMetis
      @cpMetis Год назад +1

      @@Someone-or8tp The anime avoids touching on it, but there is an anti-sexual harassment system that acts kinda like a "kick from lobby" system, where if a player touches another player inappropriately the system prompts the victim to teleport them to a temp jail area and I think make them an orange player (which is pretty bad).
      This system can be disabled by the user, which is why there can be "fun times".
      Unfortunately, an exploit was discovered I think around the time of the murder arc where some players discovered that you could manipulate a sleeping player into using their menu by physically moving them while they slept. This was typically used for theft, but was also sometimes used for murder (starting a duel to the death and accepting, then killing them in their sleep) and could also be used for sexual assault by disabling the anti-harassment system.
      There's a lot of crazy stuff to SAO that the anime doesn't bother talking about or mostly skips over. For example, there's a type of alcohol that can actually get you (sorta, not splitting hairs here) drunk. I'm pretty sure they even leave in a joke about Kirito being disappointed about getting a regular beverage during one of the anime scenes when he visits Agil's cafe/bar.

    I want to agree with the end analysis, that Asuna isn't truly a bad or psychotic person just because of what she's done, that she's *that* much impacted by the life she's lived and that she just doesn't have any way to know better. That she doesn't know what she's doing.
    *...She kinda does tho?* The "Dumb bitch Sally" scene. The line after "It doesn't matter anymore," that's *such* a deeply fucked up line, trying to corrupt and erase other people from Kirito's life and history, just like she did Liz. She is _consistent_ with this, dere when she gets her way and horrifically, methodically yan when she doesn't.
    Asuna's entire character throughout season 1 is dedicated to isolating and breaking Kirito just so *she* can be the one to bring him back up. And we can see the effects this has on him *and* Yui in Season 2, how Kirito is an emotionally broken mess who can't really reconnect with anyone else even his own sister when the chance is there, and Yui has gone from a gentle sweetheart trying her hardest to fix broken people... To becoming a sadistic, threatening, manipulative *evil* person just like her mother was, even towards Kirito.
    I understand how the alignment system dings work for this series, and I get why at the end of the day, putting her at mildly neutral good makes sense. But damn if the weighting doesn't feel like a major impact here. Asuna might be a good person for Kirito once she's gotten her way... But she has learned how to be evil, ostensibly from her mother if some internal dialogue in the honeymoon arc is to be believed, and uses it. Calling her "just a kid" at this point feels wrong when she knows how to use sex, violence, and emotional baggage to take the legs out from Kirito over and over again until he can only rely on her to even stand.

    • @KatieGimple
      @KatieGimple Год назад +34

      I completely agree. One thing I've come to realize is that when analyzing fictional characters you can almost break their alignment into an "internal alignment" and "external alignment", where their internal alignment is more looking at who they are and why they do things, whereas external alignment looks at the effect of what they do one the world around them. I would give Asuna a lawful evil internal alignment, because of how she systematically tries to destroy and subjugate the people around her, especially those she seems to care about, but a neutral good external alignment because despite her best efforts she still has a positive impact on the world and the people around her.
      Another character like this would be Kelsier from Brandon Sanderson's books. In Mistborn: The Final Empire he is portrayed as a chaotic good freedom fighter, but the more we see his motivations and actions in his other appearances (not going to spoil what they are, but they are pervasive) he is definitely at least true neutral, if not neutral evil, but because of his the circumstances around him and the existence of a greater evil, he happened to be exactly what Scadriel needed at the time.

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 Год назад +27

      I mean, I semi-agree. Asuna definitely isn't a "good" aligned character. But I do think the assessment that Asuna legitimately doesn't know how to have healthy relationships is correct.
      I'll point to her interactions with Tiffany and her interactions with Kirito while with Yui. Her being racist towards Tiffany is definitely unintentional. While her interactions with Kirito while dealing with their marriage show deep-seated insecurity ("DON'T YOU LOVE ME??"), and a genuine unawareness that never showing weakness doesn't lead to healthy relationships ("Do you ever think that's why Mom and Dad are getting divorced?" "No time to unpack that now.")
      You are right that Asuna is "horrifically, methodically yan when she doesn't get her way", but that seems to be moreso the "default" way she was taught to respond to things of that nature, rather than an active choice on her part to behave that way. She's basically parroting/mimicking her parents because she likely has no other frame of reference to what a "romantic" relationship looks like.
      "Asuna's entire character throughout season 1 is dedicated to isolating and breaking Kirito just so she can be the one to bring him back up."
      This isn't true? Like, at all? The only time she did something of that nature was with Lis, and that was specifically because she saw her as a potential romantic rival. Which is fucked up, but has nothing to do with "isolating and breaking" Kirito. She never even says anything about Kirito hanging out with Tiff, despite her unintentional racism towards him and the fact that he's basically the only friend Kirito hangs out with on a regular basis.
      "how Kirito is an emotionally broken mess who can't really reconnect with anyone else even his own sister when the chance is there"
      Uhhh.... Have you seen the recent Season 2 episodes? Like, to begin with, Kirito was always an emotional broken mess. He just covered it up with bravado, contempt and sarcasm. So again, wrong.
      "Yui has gone from a gentle sweetheart trying her hardest to fix broken people... To becoming a sadistic, threatening, manipulative evil person just like her mother was, even towards Kirito."
      Again, not true? Asuna has had no interaction with Yui since her introductory episode. If anything, Yui's more recent behavior would be attributed to Kirito accidentally retraumatizing her by turning her into an item and placing her into pretty much the exact same situation Kayaba did unintentionally. Plus, she's always been sadistic (Go for the eyes, Daddy!!), manipulative (Her masquerading as their daughter to begin with) and cruel (her roast of Yulier/her little "prank" at the end of the episode). And she's not evil. All of her behavior has specifically been to either get Suguha to confront her issues, or to expedite their rescue of Asuna. She's still trying to fix people, she's just a lot more direct and straightforward in her approach due to the pressing nature of Asuna's abduction.

      Her primary intent in that scene was to try and get Kirito over his PTSD. Hence her dismissive attitude, her insistance that she wasn't going to die, and that "things would be better this time". She does so in a horrible emotionally abusive/manipulative way, because she's a broken mess of a person as well, alongside Kirito.

I’m willing to argue her threatening that one dude’s dog was just sadistic intimidation tactics, but the Index’d (does anyone even remember that abridge series?) level of cannibalism jokes kind of tips a lot in a different favor.

    About the kirito being asuna's superior when it comes to the usefulness they showed it isn't that bad in the long run when you see all the things she's been mentioned to do. She at one point beat an opponent that kirito struggled with because she is MUCH better at using SAO's combo attacks and in the process learned a skill that kirito couldn't hope to learn. When others refer to the assault team who took on dungeon bosses and helped take down criminals in SAO she is widely referred to as just as much of a menace to them as kirito was. notice how her heathcliff and kirito are basically the only ones to actually receive nicknames such as lightning flash, the living legend and the black swordsman. Granted she definitely doesn't get to shine on screen as much as kirito even when Spoiler warning for Alicization
    She gets access to a admin account with literal god powers. she creates a couple land masses (which does actually save their asses on multiple occasions) but then gets her ass kicked in most fights she was a part of. granted so did Suguha and Shino but i'd argue Shino was kind of a badass in her fight up until she got clapped.

He does seem to talk a little different than the others but she turns it up to 11.
      For the most part in real life, it comes from the genuine desire of people to fit in. If you go to another country you generally speak their language to connect with them. 16:15 I think a big issues with Asuna's character in the show is: The show is not all that great an adoption of the sauce.
    Both because the show, and because the sauce order of events was weird.
    Originally, the books skipped straight from shortly after episode 1 to the S class ingredient scene directly (you can even tell where too, that scene makes it obvious it's supposed to be the exit of a time skip.)
    In that context, Asuna is introduced right away as the first, and ONLY, wifu material.
    All of the other episodes between then and now (except episode 2) were side stories from vol 2. Ep 2 was actually a part of a spinoff that goes over the early floors, and there Kirito and Asuna team up for a long time.

    She is the tamer, the one who turns a rogue into a knight. That is her purpose. To make edgy teenage boys wish to live a fulfilling life instead of wandering aimlessly.
    She does so not by being a powerful person but by steering Kirito into being a caring person. Solving a mystery, helping Yui, helping the knights in their fight when he has the means to do so.
    These are not things he would have done had he not met Asuna.

    So, as much as I wholeheartedly agree with this argument when it’s used to push back against the “DBZA did it better” sentiment, you have to understand that SAO is not a remotely comparable situation to the DB manga and DBZ. It was not being rushed out weekly without the time to add in foreshadowing and development, or being forced to rework main villains into side characters on a monthly basis without the time to properly plan out the story’s new trajectory, it didn’t have to work in scenes with good animation potential to every chapter because the anime was only ever a handful of episodes behind.
    The SAO anime had 10 years of Reki Kawahara’s hindsight and growth as a writer put into it. It came after the webnovel was reworked by him several times, reworked by a professional editor into a Light Novel, reworked again through retcon side stories that were trying desperately to make Kirito and Asuna’s personalities and relationship make more sense, and finally rewritten from the ground up into “Progressive” (which was worked into the first couple episodes of the anime, even though its release was delayed to coincide with the end of SAO proper in the anime). In terms of the sheer time given for hindsight and revision, the SAO anime had even more than the first arc of the abridged series. I don’t want to be overly harsh on the guy, writing’s hard, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that SWE’s narrative had any more time and hindsight behind it than the original’s story.
