      @gototheend1139 11 месяцев назад +34

      The big problem with the characters is their lack of personalities, but the abridged series saw how much potential they had.
      Cell is boring Frieza, Kirito is every generic hero who inspired more characters to be generic, alucard is the least like this but he is just a plot device to say the vadguys are done
      Exclamation point has multiple videos on Sao abridged on how they saved the show
      Tfs is doing a commentary on tfs bento showing how much they put into cell and how each stage is very different from crazy imperfect, driven semi, to confident playful perfect
      Alucard is a bored immortal, who is desperately trying to stave off boredom and sees himself as a god
      At every point they said their not just the villain, or the guy who's in focus, they ask why follow them, how to make them memorable and make sense.

    • @TheRandomMuffinMan
      @TheRandomMuffinMan 11 месяцев назад +8

      @@gototheend1139 I wouldn't really say Alucard has no personality. The whole premise of his character is that he was a man who desperately tried to be a good servant for God during the Crusades, only to end up leading his men to their deaths and being known as a mad king, eventually becoming a monster. He now goes to battlefields and fights men and monsters, trying to find a good place to die. The best way to describe him is what Integra's father said about immortals. "That they are, in fact, frail, sobbing children."Granted there's characters that are more more well made, but I wouldn't say he lacks a personality. I would say that the abridged series did a better job portraying that in a funny way.

    I love the End scene with Kiaba, because it does makes sense. Game development is hell and given that is a device that doe connect directly to your brain can leads to horrible bugs. From all we know the Beta was filled to the brim with bugs. And given that he probably slept like 2 hours a day at the end trying to fix it, it is understandable that such a big mistake can happen and no one notices it because there was no quality control. And he also explained that in his state of mind (which was fucked) he thought that pretending to trap them on purpose was a good idea (Lack of sleep for weeks can lead to very stupid ideas and very questionable states of mind).

    I kinda figured kirito going all a-hole and stealing the coat was because he had someone die in his arms, refusing to be healed, because the masses had drained away the guy’s will to live. On top of that Kirito’s coping mechanism in general is scathing remarks and mean-spirited humor to close people out.

    • @user-xx7kl7sr6i
      @user-xx7kl7sr6i 8 месяцев назад +2

      I assumed he did that because he was in shock, someone literally died on his arms a few minutes before and he had to almost die fighting what likely in-universe looked like an hyperrealistic red-eyed colossal monster using a huge-sword, and then got bullied and accused of causing deaths. In some other short story we discover he gets sentimental when alone and stressed VERY often before the events that led to him and Asuna pairing up. If someone told me he went to cry after that in some locked-off room in a town on Floor 2, I wouldn't be surprised if it was canon. Dude wasn't in his right mind and only Asuna's support (as we see through Progressive) kept him from unironically considering su1c1d3 or going insane. Dude was on the edge for practically 2 years. And the same stress and anxiety pattern seemed to repeat across almost every high-level player, the entire clearing team was full of anxious wrecks that knew how to fight for their lives. But that was also their weakness.

    I believe there are so many video essays on why SomethingWitty's SAO is just the best version of the show, but I'll highlight a few points here that are my favorites:
    1. SWE's SAO World is actually shown to understand Video Games, and those who play them. In SAO proper, the guy who wrote SAO actually had never played video games at all before writing the story, and it shows. (Heard this somewhere, need a better source on this however)
    2. There are many times in SAO proper where the useful items, Teleport Crystals and Healing Potions, simply aren't used or don't work with little explanation. In Abridged, the entire game is buggy, so a teleport crystal simply not working is a bug of the game that never got fixed.
    3. Minor Details are literally EVERYWHERE in Abridged that add to the story in very small ways but can leave huge moments of fridge logic that make multi-leveled conflicts. Within the first month of SAO's launch, 2000 people died. Couple that with a player stealing the tutorial NPC, which is even brought up in the Season Finale could mean that a large amount of players simply did not know how to even play the game got killed because of it. Or for Season 2, at the start, Kirito says that "(He's) not the same little boy with asthma anymore." and later in the series, we find out that his sister holds a large grudge against him for quitting Kendo, putting those pieces of information together, you could easily think that Kirito quit Kendo due to it being a large health risk to him, and his sister didn't understand why, or was never told why, leading to this conflict.
    4. This is a personal one, but Kirito's voice. SWE's Kirito *actually* sounds like he's a teenager instead of the official voice where he sounds like he's in his mid 20s. A main character's voice can really made or break a series, and SWE's Kirito *sells* SAO for me.
    5. Music, as touched on in the video, the musical choice of 30 Seconds to Mars': This is War, is *such* a good song for SAO as a whole. All the players are trapped within this digital world, a Brave New World for them. And Season 2's OP being asking if they could live a real life between the devil and the digital sea fits completely with what Season 2 is, switching between the game and reality trying to save someone important.

    • @user-vo3hu7qg1o
      @user-vo3hu7qg1o 11 месяцев назад +4

      1. Reki did played games before and admitted that they were partially what inspired SAO, he just wasn't a big enough gamer to properly understand general gaming community.
      4. Definitely a personal one I don't find anything wrong with og kirito voice.
      5. It's good but original SAO also has impressive music. SWE managed to find what works for their version of it.

    • @user-xx7kl7sr6i
      @user-xx7kl7sr6i 8 месяцев назад +1

      Corrections:
      1: Mr. Kawahara is a gamer, but he NEVER PLAYED an MMO before writing SAO. SAO's main inspiration was Wizardry. That's why several parts of the arcs before Unital Ring feel like friends playing the multiplayer of some RPG game that simulates being an MMO (like Hollow Fragment). Also this IS why Progressive and the spin-offs show Aincrad in a better light when it comes to VRMMOs in-theory.
      2: Funnily enough, the few times we see that happening in canon are the only times it happened at very inconvenient situations. Anti-crystal traps are ULTRA-RARE in Aincrad, Floor 74 boss room was the first time a boss room OF ANY KIND had an anti-crystal trap, and Floor 75 had this same gimmick, indicating Kayaba let that be on-purpose so no one would think that was ever going to happen.
      3. Correct
      4. Correct
      5. Indeed, this is also why Crossing Field is also liked, Aincrad's battlefields are called like that because people and monsters "cross swords" or each other across them. The song refers to a crossing field, but of the mind, what Kirito, Asuna and likely most of SAO playerbase had to mentally go through as their future was uncertain and they really only had each other, even the animals weren't real so no actual pet comfort, Pina gets the pass tho.

      @@alexanderlucard4810 It was a two and a half year long campaign so I got a few.
      So there was Artemis who was a cop that saw the world in black and white. Your either good or your evil. Then there was Aaron/ Finley (didn’t know his birth name until way later. So while the party knew him as Aaron for a while his real name was Finley so I’ll call him that.) who was a a former solders for project Mayflower. A military operations where the United States government tried to invade the digital world. The operation is failed for a few reasons but the one to note is that a ghostmon dark digivolved int a bellestarrmon and killed most of the solders. Finley was one of the few to make it out and get a digimon which he named Nox. Who’s ultra level was neocrimsonmon who was the id of god. Due to some experiments on Nox and Finley they now shared a bond but that makes Finley impulsive at times.
      They didn’t really have any problems at the start. They didn’t agree morally but bickered a lot. Worst thing that happened was Artemis arrested Finley after he fired a gun in her car.
      After they defeated the big bag evil guy Travis Moto who was a human/duskmon, things started to get interesting. Finley was hired by another survivor of project Mayflower Butch Mason who gave him mercenary jobs. One of these jobs was to kill the 10 legendary spirts which he helped do only leaving a few alive as a part of him felt conflicted. Artemis who was promoted to work with Dats was tasked on stopping the person who killed them. They met up and bickered occasionally usually when Finley did something impulsive. Though they did work together to stop a few baddies like an Amish guy who thought his digimon (a lalamon) was a demon. (That Finley later rescued when Artemis was trying to arrest her.).
      But soon the party met up with a Fakemon that one of the other party members Darius had to drive insane with the help of a scientist named Varruckte. Who would drug his digimon to get him to digivolve and also hated digimon because he believe they stole the place of pets in there world and made humans weaker. Artemis didn’t like him because of that and really hated that he drugged his digimon which Finley would comment it isn’t that dumb of an idea. Granted he occasionally has to drug his partner with a special digivolution serum when he was in the military or else he died. Which they bickered over.
      Anyway back to Fakemon, he was broken beyond repair but he wanted to help anyone he could. So he decided to “help” Artemis and Finley by informing Artemis of Finley’s crimes. They met up at a hotel in Venice where Artemis tried to get an answer out of Finley. Finley was also trying to talk down the situation. They thought of each other as decent friends at this point. Though in their middle of their discussion Artemis checked a text from a bellestarrmon (the same one from project mayflower.) who she called before they met as possible back up. Fakemon used his illusion skills to make the message look like it said to take out Finley. So Finley shot at Artemis and the two where forced to fight. They both got their crest and ultimate forms. Artemis got Justice and Finley got Revolution. At one point in the fight Finley had to drug nox to have him dark digivolve into Neocrimsonmon so he could defeat Artemis. He still lost as Artemis digimon Shadow who at this point was a quirnmon used electric web and restrained him. Bellestarrmon then tried to kill fakemon which resulted in the hotel getting destroyed. Which gave Finley a chance to escape.
      There are a few other stories but there also very long.
      There was the time that Finley made a raffelsimon to have a fail safe against the big bad. Which resulted in her dying in a week and Artemis being very confused and suspicious with how nice Finley is. Like she even stalked him a bit, and almost arrested him for what she thought was murder at the time. Though after seeing Finley teared up realized it wasn’t the case.
      The time that a bunch of neodevimon where kidnapping people for an auction and the two placed bets on who would be captured first. Artemis won the bet after she was captured, and after getting her heart broken by Bellestarrmon Finley tried to cheer her up by throwing her bet money at her. Which in her words made her feel like a “depressed whore”.
      The time Finley kidnapped mikihara norn (who’s a human vessel of Yggdrasil who in the digimon lore is kinda a self proclaimed god.) to get her out of danger from a corrupt seraphimon and Artemis had to be the hostage negotiator.
      They had a few buddy cop sessions where pretty much Finley finds out something crazy and absurd and has a very grey take on it and Artemis tries to follow along. One was when they went to an ocean temple that contained all the data in the world and took pieces of gaiamon (god in the digimon world) and it caused them to fight past lives of their digimon. Which Artemis gave him shit over.
      There was time years later in a sequel campaign where they where trying to solve a mystery of a secret cult. As well as find out who wanted revenge on Finley. At this point Artemis kinda went insane cause Butch succeeded in his plans and made Gaiamon which killed all digimon who she later broke out. So she was very protective of her child.
      Finley found out where the group was located but some of the main members. He was stumped for the life of him on who was trying to kill him. Partly because he made so many enemies. He actually made a list of people who would want him dead (there was about 60 people) and in one glance Artemis figured it out. Which shocked Finley and left him bewildered for the rest of the session cause normally he was the one in the right.

    This was a good episode, but I'm surprised that he didn't scoure a few moments. There's three I wished that Stuart dinged.
    His Speach To Grimlock: Upon finding out that Grimlock killed his wife because she refused to make him dinner, he calls out the man's petty actions and points out what he threw away by doing so. Granted, Grimlock more or less ignores this, but for at least trying to point out the injustice the murderer did I'd say it be: LAWFUL NEUTRAL/LAWFUL GOOD.
    Defending His Wife From The Truce: Though simply listed under "Kirito Shenanigans", the actual situation is much more understandable. In short, Heathcliff brokered a truce with the King of Ashes to allow the former's group safe passage (and saved his own captured ass) by promising to have Asuna (who's 17 during this point in the arc) do poses for a thong porn calendar without her consent. Upon learning of this, Kirito threatens to "flay [The King of Ashes'] fucking soul!", which calls off the true. While it does put the raid group at risk, he would probably just defend them and Kirito does avoid his wife from being exploited. Because of this I'd list this as: CHAOTIC GOOD.
    His Heart-To-Heart To Asuna & Friends: Before Kirito faces off Heathcliff, he admits that SAO is a dream come true to him, but knows that his loved ones will continued to be put at risk and is willing to leave SAO if it means their safety. Asuna encourages him, Kirito asks Tiffany to tell Liz that he didn't give her sword a mocking name, and apologizes to Klein for not joining the latter's guild. Since he's fully willing to sacrifice both his life and happiness, as well as trying to mend fences with the friends he's hurt it would be: LAWFUL GOOD.

    Ok Kayaba forgetting his reason to make SAO a Death Game is an anime original plot hole.
    In the light novel Kayaba explains that he made it a death game because he was living out a personal fantasy of his living in a world that was quote: "simple and and free, where a man could decide his fate by just his skill with a sword." A quote that was stated as the reason why Kirito was drawn to SAO as well, Kayaba was essentially set up to be what Kirito could have become if he kept up with his loner tendencies and didn't make connections with others.
    It's been a while since I've read the light novels (and it was a fan translation) but I remember that quote specifically and I remember being dissapointed that the anime actually made Kayaba's motivation such a cop out...
    For reference you can basically read each of the antagonists of the first few arcs of SAO as being dark mirrors of Kirito
    Kayaba is Kirito if he didn't make human connections
    Sugou is Kirito if he saw people as pawns.
    Death Gun's desire to kill like he did in SAO is similar to how Kirito feels hollow living in a post SAO world, making him a dark parallel to Kirito again.

    I actually really love how they even call him out on the idea that he could have EASILY become a leader, and could have taken the place of Asuna's boss aka Kayaba.
    The reason Kayaba even ended up going into the game in the first place was because the people needed someone that would take on the leader role.
    Literally the only other possible candidates were Kirito and Asuna (My headcanon is that she never ended up making a guild and become the leader because she couldn't figure out how to make a guild)
    and neither of them ever had any interest in it.
    Clite was probably the third strongest non cheating character, and he was still miles behind both of them. He had the leader qualities, but lacked the abilities of Kirito and Asuna to really make a difference.
    Kirito really *could* have become the typical, strong leading, charismatic character capable of handeling everything, but thanks to how shitty he was, he ended up actually making the creator himself join...
    In other words. If not for Kirito they would have actually finished the game at 100....instead of that unsatisfying bullshit that was ending on whatever level they ended on...

    The "asshole" moment from Kirito in episode 2, I always interpreted as him power tripping. Like, in Episode 1, Kirito knows he's a good player. But in Episode 2, Kirito realizes he's one of the better players, maybe even one of the best in SAO. It's basically him riding the high of basically 2v1ing a boss before the events of Episode 3 smack him down from his high horse.

    I dropped SAO when the villain of the first half of season 3 was literally sexually assaulted to death. (The assailant literally bursts into flames to catch up to her and there is definitely a frame or two and her voice changing mid-assault that implies that he did fully violate her before they both died.)

    -Rosalia in the original show was labeled as orange, meaning she was a player killer and was using that mechanic to ambush other players and steal their loot, Kirito had actually been hired to bring Rosalia and her gang to prison, but within this particular context, i agree Chaotic Evil, but for the original show's context, i'd go chaotic good because he kinda used Silica to draw out Rosalia.

    Another change I really liked in the abridged was in the murder mystery.
    In the original the way they faked their deaths was a bit contrived, but also reasonably plausible. No _problems_ with it but it wasn't _great._ But in the abridged the way they faked their deaths was through a glitch that is the _exact_ type of glitch that would make its way into a game past QA and Beta Testing.
    Frankly, a glitch that played the wrong animation during an unforeseen scenario reminds me of some of the glitches that have made it live in WoW over the years, like that ghost wolf Hunters could tame if they stacked enough Haste and the right meta-gem to bring the cast time of Tame Beast under said wolf's automatic despawn timer.

    SAO was not that good... until the GGO arc, then it actually took off and became a decent series. Everything since GGO has actually been enjoyable.

      @Shalakor I don't know if he regrets the popularity specifically, but Progressive is all about expanding the Aincrad arc (he had to skip a lot of the floors so he's going back and writing about them now) and one of the later arcs in the series proper takes them to a recreated Aincrad where they actually have to reach the top.

    The thing about not sacrificing the NPCs, as dumb as it might sound at face value, is actually a core part of Kirito's character and part of the foundation of the story's entire message/intent that many people failed to notice because of how easy it was to hate on this show. I know it might sound silly, but because of that, the show is seriously put under a hyper-negative underrated light that I personally feel isn't deserved, even if it is still at the end of the day a shonen anime like My Hero, Naruto, etc. The story was always about blurring the line between the digital and the physical, it's why Kirito doesn't want to sacrifice NPCs, why he goes out of his way to save Yui, why he dedicates his life to trying to bring her to the real world after SAO ends, and why SAO was made a death game in the first place. Most people just don't understand that, they hear the initial premise of this badass survival horror 100 floor game that you either beat or die, and think it's going to be this hardcore dramatic anyone can die kind of series (which is ridiculous expectation for a shonen anime), when in reality, it was always going to end up being about fighting, romance, the definition of what life is. I would even argue this topic is even more relevant now than it was back then with the uprise of AI technology and the upcoming release of Chat GPT 5, which more than half of people tested can't even identify as not being human.
    People want to call it a guilty pleasure show, it makes me sad how shitty anime youtubers really blinded people to how much nuance and and foundation was set up for the intended direction this story was trying to take all because of western sensibilities and expectations. I mean, I'm not going to act like it's peak, but the fact I have to defend this so hard is purely a result of just how much hate this show gets.

    If abridged series versions of characters are on the table now, I'd love to see how Cloud from TFS's FF7 Machinabridged stacks up alignment-wise (especially if he's compared to his canon and Remake selves, either in the same video or in separate ones). Heck, it wouldn't even be the first time that particular abridged series got some form of representation here (if you haven't seen it yet, the footage from the FF7 parts of the Sephiroth alignment video are specifically Machinabridged clips, as original-FF7 had no voice acting; Crisis Core and Advent Children instead come directly from their sources). Anyone with disposable income to throw TLC's way wanna help get that onto their Patreon?

    I feel like the after the first boss battle, he felt that if he got close to folks they died cause the only one other than asuna he slightly liked died, and the others actively got in the way a few times and died for it. So he did a lesser version of what he does later when his whole party dies. He talked bad so maybe they would give up and people as strong as him would have to carry them out since they would cower and hide after the fight.
