Today we take a look at Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender and determine what alignment he is in Dungeons and Dragons. We look at seasons 1-3 and see how he changed throughout the series

"so who's the best character in ATLA?"
Stuart: yes
We all know Firebender is JoCat's favorite ATLA class, afterall Fireball solves everything. And if you argue we have one answer: Fireball

To most, this would seem contradictory, but we _all_ agree.
Avatar is still honestly the perfect animated series to ever exist. I literally cannot think of another better one.
@@GeometryDashJake The "animated" and "series" are both unnecessary. Avatar is the best fictional anything, period.
One does not simply choose ONE best character in the Last Airbender.
The first rule of warfare is every rule of warfare. The best Character of Avatar is every Character of Avatar.
Every character in Avatar is written perfectly. That makes each character the best character.

I JUST RELIAZED THE WHOLE EPISODE HE CALLED AANG AND HIS FRIENDS THE G A A N G
Iroh, not only he maxed out his wisdom stat, he also stocked up on +wisdom items to brak over the limit, how this GM even allowed this power gamer?
probably allowed it because iroh took penalties to his dex and con. his strength wasn't too good either but he took the time in prison to rectify it.
That might be an option

One of my favorite things about the episode where Zuko attacks Aang after joining them is that the rest of the Gaang is super casual about it. "Oh, and Zuko attacked Aang." Not "Zuko betrayed us!" or anything like that. He had earned enough of their trust for them to go "Huh, that's weird." rather than any of the other possibly justified reactions they could have had.
Aang is having fire thrown at him and his reaction was "what the hell was that about man.
Just another thursday for them
@@yuki97kira probably is just another Thursday for them
If anything it may even show a familiarity between them both as enemies and friends. Like they all know what Zuko seriously attacking Aang looks like(or any of them for that matter) and they also know he’s not so dumb as to fight all of them as a ploy to capture or kill Aang. And probably for my own head canon they all know he’s the weakest bender there and if they had to they’d definitely over power him
I have to say, you missed another alignment moment when he chose NOT to redirect the lightning into his father.
Since this comment has no replies…what would you say that would be? Since he is his father but is about to cause a lot of death which Zuko knows will happen.
@catforce9999 I would call this a lawful neutral. He stood down to let aang fulfill his duty of bringing the firelord down, by whatever means aang finds, not because it is good, or will mean better for the people, but because it is aang's duty, not his own. That is textbook "the law is the law because it is the law" behavior right there
@@Phoen1xGen I'm thinking LG, because he's still not willing to kill Ozai despite everything (He had him dead to gaht damn rights with the redirect after all) and also him believing that maybe if there was a way to not kill ozai, aang would find it
@@rukrawczyk I’ve got to agree with you
Okay, the episode where he and Aang learn firebending from the dragons was more for worldbuilding than character development. Consider: Those were the only people in the world that learned firebending from its source instead of Ozai's philosophy of bending with rage. Iroh lying about killing the last dragon is pretty good evidence for that as it preserves the knowledge that was held, along with Ozai's airbender genocide, and outlawing earthbending before trying to completely obliterate the earth kingdom. Ozai wanted to ensure that his philosophy was the only true way to power, and while, yes Zuko gets his firepower back and Aang gets past his fear of firebending from both seeing a former enemy learn a more zen way to firebend and from seeing past fire's destructive nature: the episode wasn't redundant, as it highlights previous information and events in a new(er) way, and using Aang and Zuko as foils for each other, with one being all-in to firepower at one point and the other being scared to death of it.
I agree w you, it’s one of my favorite eps too
i totally read that all
Regarding Zuko losing his firebending after joining the Gaang. It was due to losing the rage at the loneliness he had felt since he was banished, and being unwilling to find a new source of rage to keep doing things the same way he had been, as he also recognized that using that rage is why he gave in to temptation so easily before.
The dragons showed him what his Uncle tried to early on. Fire is warmth and life, not rage.

tried getting a result, 240000 though not sure if you can somehow work the trig bit in, since it doesn't have an operator in front of it. the rest is for math purposes gibberish. Assuming further multiplication: I took alp to mean associated legendre polynomial(-1), since for all values the wiki had entries for where m wasn't 0, alp(-1) = 0, so we get 2cos2/0, which doesn't work and goes to +/-infinity in the limit, depending on direction of approach, so i'd say it diverges. On the other hand, going with alp_0ˆ0(-1)= 1 so we ignore that term and multiply 240000 with 2*cos2 giving us: 479707.59697 (rounded)
25:13 dinged Chaotic Good. Literally 10 seconds later he gets a ding for Lawful Evil. Holy shit Zuko's all over the place XD
Mental breakdown do be like that
My dude's going through it.
The motivation for Zuko's most important actions never changed. It was always Honor. What changed was his view of Honor, and was and wasn't honorable.
During the paladin redemption quest. That was the GM railroading the party so that dragons could be introduced
I wouldn’t say zuko wasn’t a paladin but it does make sense there is no paladin in the group zuko is probably a sorcerer fighter multiclass who prefers fire spells
Zuko has one of, if not my most favorite line in the whole show: "Why am I so bad at being good!"
I can't help but laugh, but it also makes me feel for him as well. He's finally doing the right thing, and is trying so hard!
The finny thing is that in the end, He did find the Avatar and reclaimed his honor. It just wasn't in the way that Ozai had planned.
Hey, that's kinda similar to Iroh taking the city back from the fire nation rather than taking it for the fire nation like he once tried to.
Another thing I love about the Avatar series is that any bender's abilities can be supplemented and even enhanced by studying even minor forms of other bending, which of course reflects real world martial arts. Such as Iroh teaching Zuko how to redirect lightning via forms he learned from water-benders. Or Zuko learning how to maintain body heat in the Cooler by adapting breathing techniques from air-bending, which also explains how Aang is perfectly fine in polar ice cap conditions. Also an instance during Azula's surprise attack where Zuko moved in a flowing motion also not unlike water-bending. This series is pure art, man!
love how everyone had a deep moral adventure with Zuko like Toph one was not real one but still got one
I love how around the midpoint his alignment is constantly ping ponging around neutral. Really shows the conflict.
"i'd say it was chaotic stupid but its actually neutral evil."
XD. i fucking died at that.
I love that scene where zuko apologizes to iroh and one of the reasons for that is because it’s the only time I noticed tears coming from his burnt side of the face
Random comment. Also: Only now realized you put Elsa in the 'evil' pile.
Well, in the source material she was evil.
Shows how little I pay attention, I thought that was Rosalina
Iroh and Zuko reunion scene starts.
Me: This deserves more then a Nat 20 scene.
*Nat 20 Impodes into black hole.*
Me: Perfect
22:42 I honestly thought Zuko was going to say "That's rough buddy"
Lawful neutral at the start: he must restore his honor, no matter the cost, but lawful good by the end; ruler of the fire nation and resorer of it's honor.
man, you were right...
... jojo's voice acting was perfect... oh and the video was awesome :P
18:55 Oh crap, the boomerang's thrown as well? I've never noticed! XD
I clicked when i read the title and thought "Well obviously he's lawful-" * remembers when he broke his own code of honor to break out the avatar * "Er- chaotic?" * Remembers his hilarious stint as a very polite food service worker * ..."GooD?" * remembers literally half of the show *
okay wtf
hahahah! welcome to the channel ^^ lemme know what you think when you're done and don't forget to check out the others ^^
This video just wound up in my recommended today. I find it hilarious that this channel's video on Zuko's alignment is longer than its video on the alignment of *every* character in Kung Fu Panda.
60 episodes vs 3 movies? i'm not lol
@@TheLoadingCrew Fair point. Great work by the way. I liked the video
So, I just rewatched the series to compare my results with yours. I started him at chaotic neutral (i forgot to include flashbacks), and he still ended up as neutral then neutral good. Love your work, keep it up
that the lovely thing about how he does the videos, especially for a longer series. He goes over this in his Mulan video, how even if you start her as Chaotic good (He started her as Lawful good), she ends up as Neutral good by the end of the first animated film.
Doing an alignment determination with my boy Zuko? You just earned a sub my friend.
(Lawful Good)
ding
This is exactly what I needed after a rough bout of days. I think the video is well edited, really smart, really creative, and so fun. Love the beginning with Megami33, I would love to see you do the comics and LoK study. It may be easier since Viacom has less legs to stand on with copyright and the comics.
hopefully /sigh
@@TheLoadingCrew Maybe even include Zuko's complete time line?
37:07, This scene hit me so hard, that just watching it without the sound has the power to make me cry. Yes, I'm crying.
I wanna contest something: the moment when Zuko lashes out he does this via firebending, he does this without actually harming the Gaang and so I consider that Chaotic Good
I appreciate that your Ding Ding section is as thorough as it is without throwing the alignment all over the place. You seem to note the alignment of each choice without throwing his character alignment around the compass. I find that far too many people, DMs in particular, forget that one action does not an alignment make. People are complicated creatures. It takes compounded actions to shift an alignment.
Note: when zuko lashes out after iroh is wounded he barely warms them with the flame and was just scaring them off
X3 Glad to see that the Dankula reference made the cut!
36:20 that's an interesting parallel, because when I was watching Zodiac Wars, they mentioned an old Chinese proverb: In three generations a Boar can become a Pig. (this was used in that show to illustrate that perhaps Boar was not as strong as her reputation led people to believe.)
XD awkward pauses during the intro made my day
If I had a nickel for the number of characters, he called the best character in the series in the first 7 minutes and 39 seconds. I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
Woah I haven't even finished watching the video years after it was published and I just got a heart
take that heart and like it lol
That intro was absolutely incredible!
Take a shot for every time this video was reuploaded.
Im not responsable for any long term damage
Alright
I love this series! Please continue, it is really great!
I don't have time right now to watch a video this long, but I'm going to drop a like on it for that intro alone.
Also, lawful neutral in the first season, drifting towards lawful good later.
God damn that hug+crying scene between Zuko and Iroh is still fucking amazing
Need to say how amazing the scenes of zuko visiting iroh in prison.. Despite iroh being in prison.. Zuko's the only one shot behind bar.. Like the cameraman is in the prison as well.. And iroh looks to be outside from the perspective
7:05 I caught that!m
Also Book 2 has apparently always been a licensing nightmare based on how syndicated reruns used to be.
Although the way the stills were used is very good at conveying the scene.
You say in the beginning that aang is the best character and in the middle that zuko has the best story and then at the end say azula is the best but there are two people that are equally as good and tie for the best characters
Cabbage man and Iroh
He mentions iroh at one point too
Thank you so much for reuploading this! Viacom took down the first one WHILE I was watching it! With only the last ten minutes to go!
THAT END ALMOST MAKE MY CRY
I found your channel with the video of Stanley Pines. Is sometimes difficult to understand because my native language is not English but i can enjoy the videos anyways
thank you! i'm glad you found me :)
Well this seems familiar.
That moment when you clicked it before it was taken down but your youtube crashed and still couldn't see it in time lol glad it git dealt with in a decent time frame this time
When you say that every character is the best...You're not kidding at all you're dead serious. Because THAT'S how flippin good this series is in writing believable utterly realistic human characters that intrigue us and have us asking serious moral/philosophical questions on what's right and wrong/good and evil. Also FUCK YES breaking the nat multiplier on that scene of absolute love and forgiveness that hug is literally life.
Also Fire Nation and Bending for Life!!!
The Nistalga Critic clip in the honor montage caught me so off guard I was laughing for several minutes straight XD
;P
RUclips, Content Creators, Copyright Laws on Fair Use, Videos....
Long ago, the four aspects of our modern world on the Internet lived in harmony, then, everything changed when Companies that don't want certain things in videos attacked(like seriously, even companies that don't own the stuff do that), only Fair Use and RUclips, the things that could fix wrong copyright claims, were able to stop these companies. But when the content creators needed RUclips and Fair Use, RUclips made bots to carry out copyright claims(even wrong ones on innocent people) and Fair Use was forced into committing not exist...
Several years have passed and really nothing has changed, but we do need a hero....
Man I watched Avatar growing up and loved it. But it took 16 years for me to truly understand its MAJESTY of artistic concept and storytelling, I would not be apposed to you doing this with more best characters in the series. Great video man.
Iroh hug is when you get a 21 on a d20
I'll watch this as many times as I have too. old man
Generally speaking, I think Zuko starts as a NG, develops into a LE as he hunts the Avatar, and after he joins the Gaang, he shifts back to a NG/CG. That’s just my opinion though.
I think he starts off at true netural then goes to chaotic netural then goes to netural good or chaotic netural

Bow chica wow wow
wow this guy's alignment is going everywhere
That was an amazing intro.
....immediately followed by a shoutout to the guiness world record holder for biggest mobile game advertising budget.
I really want you to do one of these for a Fate/stay night character like Shirou Emiya or Saber, but I don’t want you to go through the headache of mapping out each route.
The scene in the book of fire with iroh and zuko actually did make me cry it stokes my heart
iroh hugging zuko had me crying again
YASSS THIS INTRO I LOVE IT!😂😂❤️❤️
I'm aware that this is over a year after this video originally released but I think the Ozai and Zuko scene is more of a lawful good moment than a chaotic neutral one. Even after getting lightning shot at him, he has the opportunity to kill Ozai right then and there. But he doesn't. Instead he directs it near Ozai and instead of dueling him he walks away, fully understanding Iroh's teachings about *when* one should fight.
40 mins on my fave TV character ever. Yes please!
That intro was so good!
0:44 a fellow man of culture I see!
Honorable Swordsman..That’s what Zuko truly wanted.
33:34 that scene always makes me cry that’s why this show is magical
Love the count Dankula reference lol
Ive gotta say the craziest part of this entire show is the fact that all of this revolves around a bunch of teenagers and kids fighting in a war and it shows the repercussions of said war.
Absolutely loved this! Going to be one of my favorites of your alignments for a long time. Very well done and was on one of my favorite characters of all time.
Honestly I came into this expecting Zuko's choices to be mostly evil or neutral as the show progresses. Now only eleven minutes in and I saw more good choices that I didn't even notice after watching this show multiple times. Credit to the creators for the subtlety and to you for picking it up

29:08 I've literally had that exact line, discribing my character view on the world AS A COMPLETE ACCIDENT, I don't even remember Zuko saying anything close to this!
Edit: I mean honor stuff, not ending war etc...
32:08 Imagine what's going through Zuko's mind when he sees that
It's kind of wild that Zuko does most his most evil actions in the beach episode lmao
You even included Dante Basco from the nostalgia critic review. Nat 20 attention to detail.
Ok, I love that Dank reference! And ATLA on top of it? Nice!
Very glad to watch this again. It's unfortunate RUclips hates this video though
"but before we start the video....its yo boy"
god dammit i had a fucking ptsd attack
That intro was the best.
Finally finished Avatar today so I can actually watch this!
You should do Catra from She-Ra 2018, since the show is over. Not quite as strong, but a really close redemption arc to Zuko's, but she goes WAY farther into the abyss before she claws her way back out to be with Adora. (It has more weaknesses than Zuko's arc because several character should have still hated her at the end, but still forgave her, but still a great arc.)
Iroh is by far my favorite character in this series. I cried the episode about his son.
This Video is great even after rewatching it. Hmm makes me wonder who else you will cover next oh Lord GM
