It's weird that SAO wasn't procedurally generated, given that Kayaba did in fact create a suite of tools called the Seed which can indeed procedurally generate realistic worlds (which is used much later in the show)
As far as I remember; This “Seed” was a self learning bottom-up AI that could access the entirety of the internet. So the fact that it may have assisted in generating levels of SAO doesn’t seem far fetched. Now the cost and time it would take to R&D this bottom-up AI IRL is a whole other beast.
@@lukassmith9863 In failure in general is to bound SAO that much into our timeframe. The Novel was written near 20 Years ago, the Author couldn't know how we are today in many stuff. A NervGear alone is from technology standpoints many many years far away. So I would like it more if we would look with today's available technology and what could be used to start with creating a SAO like game. And then comes clearly procedurally generation combined with a deep learning AI into play, which can fix the problem that pg has. With both together it is possible to create generated worlds that looking interesting and not like copy&paste. Star Citizen use since years pg to create planets, but the interesting stuff is placed by artists, that alone makes it possible to create such huge planets, without it would be much much more work. Now use an AI to make it even more easier and you can save a lots of work and money. And you can even use pg and AI to create houses, items etc. You can see in the last years pretty good how much the tools for game developers increased to lower their work and let them focus more on important stuff. One person can create today games that was 10 years ago simply impossible for them, too much work. Let's lay the NervGear part on side, if someone would invest this money in such tools and use the UE5 for it (Nanite without the need of LoDs is already a huge work safer and also Lumen makes it easier). A SAO like game with that size would be much much cheaper possible than in the video is said. But you also need to say: if you reach the right fans, you can make expensive games, see Star Citizen as example, it is already over 400 million USD.
Technically one can instruct the map generation part of the AI to 'generate' areas in a specific way while re/ using preset assets to create unique environments for every floor. 2036: One guy alone finally makes a full dive game. Creator: traps everyone and fries their brain if the try to leave. Also the creator: why do i hear happy noises?
I dunno why after everyone left aincrad they were all suffering from ptsd. Most of the players were fucking around in towns and doing nothing to help get out of the game. (I would be that person not gonna lie, I really do want an excuse to play videogames the rest of my life)
you forgot something in SAO there were "unique skills" which are randomly generated abilities that skilled players sometimes get and each one is different like how one guy can dual wield swords and another guy can duel wield axes... I can't even imagine how much it costs to create a system that automatically checks every players skill list for skills that currently exist and generates a random "unique skill" based on what doesn't exist and selects someone that is considered a "skilled player" who doesn't already have a "unique skill"
it shouldn't be that expensive, since you can check only after a player leveled their skills and maintain a leaderboard thing that records the player did the most "something"( e.g. using a skill perfectly) and choosing the most "skilled" player from that
@@-___-_-_- This. Just write it like If (playerlevel >= XYZ, UniqueSkillObtained = false, SpecialAbilitySkillLevel >= ABC) { execute CreateUniqueSkill="UniqueSkill" UniqueSkill= bla bla bla
I work in the games industry and the only plausible way I could assume it would work is that the Sword Skills as a whole work off of a sort of base system that puts various pieces of code together to form different combinations that allow for "new" skills. Using a system like that they could have all of their base skills that anyone can learn alongside the individual skills. As for how it works, procedural generation could work. As a player joins the system could identify the player with a certain id and then roll random numbers to dictate if they have an individual skill or not, and after that it just boils down to the game fitting various features together to make a new skill.
dual wielding isn't generated lol. Most skills aren't, they're pre-programmed. What you're describing are original sword skills, which are invented (not generated) by players in ALO
vrchat is cool since i have created Yuuki character and sinon GGO character too and now im working on kirito while asuna is probably my last project (i might thinking of creating klein or that alice from s3 alicization)
Imagine having a medical condition or disability and being excited to be free in the game of SAO, just to have Akahiko snap his fingers and you have your old body back and tell you to survive or you die irl
Wait... The game know how your Body look like but not which disabilitys it has... Later in Alfheim Online is a girl (Yuuki) who lives in VR cause she has HIV in terminal state and has a healthy Body in game
Nighthawk810 that’s true for Alfheim, but most people don’t look like their real self in Alfheim which is why Kirito didn’t even recognize that Leafa was his sister so you’d still be in trouble in SAO
@@eviolinarts5014 Ok point for you... But I don't think that the nerve gear simulates your actual body except the look... Makes no sense in a multi player game that turns into a death game to be harmed from the start. Like Sinon: she must be afraid of guns in GGO cause the memory in her RL and the device connects to her brain but she isn't.
Nighthawk810 I made the joke because it wouldn’t really make much sense and it’d be a shame if it worked that way, not making any claims or anything just speculation. GGO also isn’t a true comparison just like Alfheim though, if were following the same pattern of reasoning. Either way it’s just somewhat interesting to consider that one of the rules in SAO was that you were stuck with your real body, and if that meant someone who played had a serious setback I wouldn’t put it past the game design to simply not care about fairness in survival capability
I know this video is rather old, but I'd just like to write a bit about this TLDR: Assets can't really be measured as Amount of assets * Complexity = Price. 5:55 About the assets, characters, etc. From what I remember. Non Player Characters (NPC) are not premade. They are made by the central system running the game, called Cardinal. Which means that a lot of that art budget was probably used on creating a "generator" of sorts for all characters. This would also cover the infamous "Mirror" in episode 1. With a Character generator that Cardinal can understand, there will mostly be a set of assets like buildings, weapons, tools, etc. Assets such as trees and grass would likely need to be constantly removed and added due to player interaction, as in the part where Yui comes in, you can see a woodcrafter out chopping wood. So these assets will be perishable. There could be a large amount of assets that the system picks from, but considering how advanced everything else is, I doubt it's just an assetpack. Instead, it could be that Cardinal "knows" how these things should look after "training", and can generate decently unique assets on the fly to fill certain criteria. This would also make certain areas easier to work with. Just set a forest zone and Cardinal handles the rest. The only problem with this is how would Cardinal know how these things should feel. And I guess it's just going to be based on brainwaves recorded from actually doing stuff like touching grass (something I should probably have done today). If you handle the data properly, you could theoretically create the sensations required to make touching and smelling possible as well. And for it to be generated per asset. In the series, somewhere after the Alfheim arc. There are mentions that Cardinal uses stories and religions such as Northern mythology to generate quests and NPCs of all kinds to fit that. Which would mean that not only is it possible to generate NPCs, but they don't have to be humanoid. I do believe Aincrad already had cities and buildings set up before the release, but most assets are likely generated on the fly by Cardinal to fit the forever changing environment that is Sword Art Online.
There's only one thing you overlooked MatPat, as you find out in the light novels Kayaba got funding from both medical and military facilities and the possible profits gained from the software he created be it for military training, revolutionising work enviroments, the ability to give coma patients an enviroment to walk around and talk in or so much more would've easily accounted for these costs and much, much, more
So, what do we have here? SAO turned a profit even before launch, and we still got preorders, server problems, and devs hit the road instead of providing patches. Way to go, EA.
that would've been funding for the nervegear though not the game itself. i don't see any government branch providing funds for the development of an MMO
the nerve gear is part of the same company so basically hes saying that this is where they got their funding from to begin with the game was a side effect of the nerve gear being developed
Thexevilxwulfy so it was planned to be used for the military, medical field, tourism, and general work fields and NO-ONE tested it and "hey, can't this thing fry our brains?" There would be a lot of engineers analyzing the crap out of it. Or in other words SAO has terrible writing argument v:87.3
Actually, I think there is some kind of procedural generation in SAO. Heartcliff gave Kirito the seed, which were used to make others vrmmos. But obviously they had to code the seed in the first place. Said so, as we saw in Alicization, AIs... like, actual AIs, are a thing in that world, so isn't that weird to think that the sao was an ai that coded itself into a playable game, guided by the developers. This hypotheses makes the whole thing a little more credible I guess. And btw, they don't need to simulate the smells, sensations and stuff. They just need to stimulate the brain. If the game convinces your brain that you are drinking an orange juice, you gonna taste it. If the game convinces you brain that you are touching something, you'll feel it. It's actually a very well documented reaction, that I tottaly forgot the name rn beco's it's 3am and my brain isn't working.
Let me ask, how do you think they understand how to stimulate the brain to create a sensation? They mostly need to monitor someone who is experiencing the sensation first then replicate it. So yes they would have to simulate all the sensations to gather to information to be able to simulate in people playing. You cannot just do a general simulate the brain and it gives you sensation you want. There is also a reason most of this doesn't currently exist at a high level today is because just sending electrical signals has difficulty producing anything complex, and this can change between people based on their neuron connects and biological factors.
@@minorisarako9386 In your last sentence you talk about certain peoples brains working slightly differently. I'd just like to point out that there are canon instances of something called FNC (Fulldive Non-Conformity) in which certain people will be unable to perform certain acts or feel different things, do to the Nerve Gear not being finetuned to specific people as well as it should've.

probably ~£1500 if I were to estimate. that money can buy a very good computer so in roughly 50 years it should be a reasonable price for nervegear and a ''sao''-like game assuming its possible making a true virtual reality.
MyOpinionIsAFACT scientists and game designers/programmers have said it may only be 5-8 years. So I think $60 will be too cheap. At least $500 for something like that.
Grey W, I think you're right on the money. The game itself might cost $60, but the Nervegear would be like the console system that would cost $400-500.
@@korsaiyajinkami3766 Considering the top end vr headsets today cost ~$3000 and this is cutting edge technology there are well im pretty sure that is the kind of price this would cost. Personally, I would gladly pay that on top of a $300 monthly subscription for something of SOA quality (without the microwaved brain). Remember most people who grew up with MMOs in the golden ages are 30-35 now, with steady incomes and disposable cash. I'm no super-rich hardcore gamer, but cutting edge experience can be charged at a high price. according to the anime though its most likely game console prices based on the players ages.
I feel like every time movie writers make scripts that take place in the future, they always over estimate how fast technology progresses. In Back To The Future 2, they thought in 2015 that we’ll have flying cars, even though we still don’t really have many self driving cars yet. In SAO, they thought in 2022 we’ll have technology that is able to fully replicate reality. It’s now 2022, and virtual reality headsets still suffer from things like the screen door effect (which is when the headset’s resolution is low enough that you can see each of the pixels, like if you were to go up close to a screen door, hence the name) or thumbstick drift on the Valve Index or the downfall of the metaverse that no one totally ever saw coming because facebook is the most beloved company that definitely is not intrusive on its users data. Come to think of it, it facebook is collecting so much data, how are they not noticing that people hate the metaverse lol?
Hell half the time I wanna commit suicide because of the community. *Game lobby reads "No Tank"* Me: "No tank?" I thought there was a lot of heavy lifting from the cardinal system in creating NPCs, stories, dungeons, quests, etc. In the game. In theory, each of the 100+ maps would need only a small sampling of human made world building each for the impressively capable and pretty much sentient AI known as the cardinal system to extrapolate on top of it. (That being said, it would still be an unattainable goal to make money off of with the other costs. The creator of the series clearly did not understand video game development.)
The SAO developers could also be selling the data of how players react to certain senses and their conversations with other players. This would make a massive profit for many, many reasons.
Even so there's no one patient and anime enough to put that much effort in a game that cost that much to make and not make money out of it or do it for the sake of some reason that will satisfy the person.
You and Matpat both forgot about subscriptions, which are where MMORPGs actually make their money back (by the truckload). Also, Kayaba wasn't really in it to make money, he wanted people to live in his virtual world, an once they beat SAO, he wanted them to freely distribute the VRMMO code to create lots of new VRMMOs. He didn't really care about bankrupting the company he was working for, it was probably part of his plan, but the company could reasonably expect to expand their user base, and if they were as successful as WOW, with 20M subs at $15/month, they would make a cool $3.6 billion per year, so yeah, quite profitable from their standpoint.
Ben Jones Did they mention subscriptions in the anime? Also, pretty sure there are people that would be monitoring the budget and product production. I’m also pretty sure that Subscriptions would be in humane in this kind of situation, seeing as the company would also be responsible for players dying because of the situation. There’s no way the public would just sit there and line the company’s pockets after this situation has occurred. Even then, though, it wouldn’t come close to earning back what they paid for making the game after the amount of time they were in it.
Ben Jones Even if they charged $60 a month and it still went through with subscriptions, it wouldn’t get CLOSE to paying off what they needed, even in two years. 10,000 * 60 *24 = 14,400,000. They would still be insanely behind on that profit. There’s no way that there’s no one monitoring the budget and profit projections to see that it’s insanely underneath what they paid.
Well, in the light novel, the 10,000 that were purchased on day one were only in Japan, because the game was only released in Japan. However, as time went on, it sold over 3 million.
@@num63r53 That 500 mil must have included marketing, that or they lied.

I know this video is rather old, but I'd just like to write a bit about this
TLDR:
Assets can't really be measured as Amount of assets * Complexity = Price.
5:55
About the assets, characters, etc.
This need's more comments

Meh...who cares
@@jetlermaliyao7633 sorry, i'm an IT specialist. my job already fried my brain.
However: have you already tried to turn it off and on again?
So, how AI gonna makes some weird feeling and smells when you eating some puss- sorry, nevermind.
I completely agree with your comments. Also I feel that 3am statement
@@minorisarako9386 In your last sentence you talk about certain peoples brains working slightly differently. Sword art online might cost $60. But the Nervegear would cost a shit ton of money

I thought there was a lot of heavy lifting from the cardinal system in creating NPCs, stories, dungeons, quests, etc.

Adyn Holden if it was 1 billion dollars I’d kill to buy it
Valivictrium no, a lot of people would buy it. People sometimes buy VR stuff to escape their terrible lives, plus people love VR MMORPGs.
@@bruh1800 i´d definetly buy it, having an escape like that would probably change my life
Valivictrium I’ve watched the show and i don’t care it would be to cool to pass up because #kiritoisbadass

I often think of SAO as the Eminem of Anime but I was shocked when I found someone who seemingly had never heard of it
4:52 Sorry Mat but MMORPG stands for Many Men Online Role Playing Girls.

I think you mean Male Memers Online Role Playing Girls
Yeah, sounds legit.
I if In the Future someone makes this You should only be allowed to play as your own gender.
Many Men Online Role Playing as Girls
MatPat You accidentally put $1,700,000 instead of $1,700,000,000.
Elijah John I was confused too.
Just noticed too
Adam Pawlik All that math and MatPat has somehow forgotten how to count zeros.
Nathan T For some reason it irks me every time I see it. Fix it MatPat! >:(
I noticed that too, was like "that doesn't look like enough zeroes"
It may be expensive... But nothing the Kirito is Always Right foundation can't cover!
