  • In this short clip we see what was formerly the old Steamtown Museum in Carnforth during the period when it was open until 1997. The shed which was built by Italian Prisoners of war in the 1940's survived right to the end of steam in 1968 eventually becoming Steamtown
A group of enthusiasts chaired by Dr Peter Beet formed the Lakeside Railway Estates Company, with the idea of preserving both the line and Carnforth MPD to base steam locomotives at aswell as run them at what would become the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (sadly the whole route wasnt saved and is now severed between Haverthwaite & the Furness Line.
Steamtown became a popular tourist attraction and saw a large increase in steam locomotives to be based at the site as either visiting engines like 45596 Bahamas to permanent resident engines like 1306 Mayflower, 5407, 46441, 48151, etc. 4472 Flying Scotsman during it's ownership by Sir William McAlpine was even based at Carnforth for a number of years.
Owing to increasing H&S regulations and because McAlpines stake in the business was sold to the sites present owner David Smith who wanted to focus more on mainline operations than a museum, the site closed to the public at the end of the 1997 season.
As of 2021 the site is now home to numerous steam engines including: 4920 Dumbleton Hall, 6201 Princess Elizabeth, 34016 Bodmin, 34067 Tangmere, 35018 British India Line, 46115 Scots Guardsman, 48151 plus two sets of black 5's 44767 and 44932 & Jubilee's 45690 Leander and 45699 Galatea (45699 as of 2021 is dressed as 45562 Alberta). Carnforth is even home to the famous engine featured in the Harry Potter film series, this being 5972 Olton Hall otherwise known as Hogwarts Castle.
The full programme called Railways Restored - North West England shows numerous heritage lines and museums past and present including in this video when Carnforth was open to the public.

A pity that Carnforth Motive Power Depot is now closed to the public as it was a popular attraction to visit and sadly I never got the opportunity to visit. Maybe one day I might but who knows what will happen especially following the recent court case with the sites present owner West Coast Railways.

Health and safety sadly combined with the site now being used for railtour operations only rather than being a visitor's attraction.
