Rather than going straight into the house from the garage...I always take the scenic route and carry my groceries out, through the gate and around to the back door!
Hoping to build my first gate soon. Glad to see the "extra" 2x4's there because I was wondering about extra support. I don't want my gate to fail shortly after
I use 6x6's for all gate, corner and end posts and at least 120 lbs of concrete in each. Also for that much weight i use extra large heavy duty hinges and 6" lag screws instead of the hing bolts provided because hinge failure is a common issue among gates that heavy. 4 blocks the same length ( about 12" ) in the corners of the gate to back up the lags on the doors. One more thing i also use 6" lags for the supports on the back of the door. You dont get any beafier or stronger than that and dont need all that extra wood.
Almost nailed it. Gate is perfect we build those exactly like that daily. The post should be 4x8 turned with longest side to run with fence line. The latch is ok but they make mutch heavier latches
I'm doing this build, and I noticed this same. I'm going to put the 8x/longer side parallel with the gate. Another question: what kind of hinges would you recommend for a 64 inch width gate, about 4.5 high? Would a strap hinge about 20 inches long work? What brand do you like?
Liked his double-post tip, but looks like the post in the foreground needed another quarter-turn clockwise to truly get the grains "going in opposite directions."
great job, however I would think the 2nd 4x4 should be inline with the fence rather than perpendicular because the stress on the post is from the leveraged weight of the gate which is normally closed and that is the force you are trying to combat.
If he didn't sink both posts into concrete, how much benefit would a lagged 2nd post standing on the ground be? Other than "some" small effect as a sort of counterweight when the gate is opened fully... but you would get that benefit and more by sinking both into concrete.
Not me, I live in Dallas, Texas and only use wood pressure-treated posts. Then i treat it with anti termite, waterproofing it. Looks nicer and is more versatile. Uses less parts to connect to.
What latch are you using and what hinges looking to make this at home as contractors out here suck and how far off grounf as well as advice on double wide door for vehicles to fit in
Tips on an electric fence on top of my privacy fence and all the way around it! I live in the Texas Hill Country, 4 hours from the border. The grain is the rings in the lumber. You just rotate them however you like until the grains of the 2 posts are going in opposite directions of each other. It helps balance warping between the posts instead of just letting them warp the same direction
Your gate opening won't be exactly 20ft if that's all the room you have to work with. Because you need to have two posts set on each side of the gate. So depending on what posts you go with, you'll have around 19' 10" for your opening.
No, it's running the right way. This way helps hold up the weight of the gate. Other way the weight of the gate is pulling away from it instead of resting on it.
Had mine installed by a "professional" company in eastern pa, a year ago. What a joke. Sagging so bad, I'm the only one that can open it. Some fence guy🙄
First off this must be bullshit because no man comes in with one hand filled with grocery's! They are maxed out with bags in their teeth just so you don't have to do 2 trips
You do use two 4x4s but you don't set them like that. You set them both on the fence line. Same with steel posts. Good job on that brace. That's how i build them. Looks good 👍
Who in the world parks in front of their house??? My only experience with bringing in groceries is through my backdoor, so everyone MUST have the same experiences as me????
I hate the cut out for the latch all that extra work and unfortunately small details like that are missed.can we see the whole gate? And did you rip two pickets on the opp side of the post to make it look like one big picket? Omg I watched it again and you have 2 foot of pickets at the bottom smh is that why you blacked out the bottom half???

Lmfaoooo
😂
I use the side door to my house because it has direct access to the kitchen. I have to open my fence gate to do so, what he said was valid in my case.
@@marinodejesus8024 congratulations!!!

I don't have two 4x4's put together but it is a 4x6 post. Hope that holds up well.
That should stop the villagers from storming into your castle
BOY THOSE WERE 3 HOT TIPS

I put concrete between the two posts on the bottom and a 2x8 cedar top hat across the top. That ensure no movement between the 2 posts

I just wrote the same, glad to see someone else caught that.

That sounds familiar lol nice job somebody’s been paying attention.
Yes!!!🎉
MrFence is da bomb

I wish you would teach fence installers in my area. My fence and my neighbor fence we're done so poorly it's ridiculous.
Good job
Would 6x6 not be better and easier/less janky looking?
can provide link for the door lock, been looking for one like this
great job, however I would think the 2nd 4x4 should be inline with the fence rather than perpendicular because the stress on the post is from the leveraged weight of the gate which is normally closed and that is the force you are trying to combat.
Wrong
On point #1, why not just use 13gauge galvanized metal posts instead of wood posts?
@whatcomhandyman1350, did you sink both posts that are attached together? Or is the second post just on the ground and lagged to the sunk post?
That's what I was wondering
If he didn't sink both posts into concrete, how much benefit would a lagged 2nd post standing on the ground be? Other than "some" small effect as a sort of counterweight when the gate is opened fully... but you would get that benefit and more by sinking both into concrete.
Booyah indeed!
We use steel posts in North Texas.
Not me, I live in Dallas, Texas and only use wood pressure-treated posts. Then i treat it with anti termite, waterproofing it. Looks nicer and is more versatile. Uses less parts to connect to.
We dont use wood post but we like the technique!
Great, but how to you measure and cut the brace so it fits so perfectly in the corner? I'm a newbie.
BOOYAH! Smart.
So the lockable portion of the latch is on the outside? I guess if you want to be locked in your yard, it's a good idea.
What latch are you using and what hinges looking to make this at home as contractors out here suck and how far off grounf as well as advice on double wide door for vehicles to fit in
Boo yah!! Great info
Gates wider than 4ft should use 6x6 posts with up to 4 80 LB BAGS per hole
No space between the fence boards?
Cut to the Chase and just use six-by-six
8x8
Just need that one (long) compression brace, that 2nd one is just adding unnecessary weight.
His compression brace is going to the wrong "corners". He used the "tension" corners. Compression is from tops outside to bottom hinge side.
@@daveseibert9390 ? That's how it is...the hinges are on the side furthest away from house.

straight! work!
Extra strong but extra heavy....
Construction glue pickets to frame and it won't sag
POV how to spend your rich customer's budget on extra wood
By "grains in opposite direction", do you mean that one 4 x 4 is upside down?
The grain is the rings in the lumber. You just rotate them however you like until the grains of the 2 posts are going in opposite directions of each other. It helps balance warping between the posts instead of just letting them warp the same direction
How would you do the 2 4x4’s for a corner gate?
You'd probably be fine with a 4x6 for the corner if the gate latches to that post. If the gate hinges are on that corner post I'd definitely do a 6x6.
How do you overbuild a gate, right here is how
You must work for a lumberyard.😊
Just use a 6×6 post.
Why not buy a 4x8 or 6x6 posts instead of lagging 2 - 4x4 posts together lol.
For cost effectiveness and for getting the cross grain action that prevents twisting
How about a 12x12 as an extra strong one?
Just plant oak trees and wait 50 years.
He emphasized the cross grain part
They probably just order and keep 4x4s in bulk and lag them together when needed. That way they just order 2x4, 4x4, and fence slats.
its strong but you can kick it off the latch
I have a 20ft driveway and I need 2 10ft gates. Is this possible?
Probably need a welded metal frame to make that last!
Your gate opening won't be exactly 20ft if that's all the room you have to work with. Because you need to have two posts set on each side of the gate. So depending on what posts you go with, you'll have around 19' 10" for your opening.
Buy a square tube gate frame and be done.
Compression 2x4 should run from the left top of your fence towards the right bottom. That way it will prevent sag in the future
No, it's running the right way. This way helps hold up the weight of the gate. Other way the weight of the gate is pulling away from it instead of resting on it.
It is correct this way, bottom hinge receives the weight of the sag.
Should have used 1/4 6x6 metal post
Your x Bracing is backwards 😊
A wheel should be mandatory
Alot of you think thus is over building the gate....go out and build one with bare minimum support and you'll be rebuilding it in 2 weeks.
I was trying to see how to install a gate latch but only saw you fat fingers and blackout screens
Weld one up and forget the heavy wooden frame
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Nice but I could build it just as strong with less material..
Great. I needed a gate that would give me some privacy AND repel the hordes of Mordor
Had mine installed by a "professional" company in eastern pa, a year ago. What a joke. Sagging so bad, I'm the only one that can open it. Some fence guy🙄
2 4x4s is a great idea less chance of twisting warping
That’s too much weight. Less wood better.
He said extra strong gate, not just a regular gate
First off this must be bullshit because no man comes in with one hand filled with grocery's! They are maxed out with bags in their teeth just so you don't have to do 2 trips
On the gate the angle brace should be the other way.
No, it's good. The far end is resting on the brace instead of falling away from it.
wrong, the sag will compress this brace down to bottom hinge.
You do use two 4x4s but you don't set them like that. You set them both on the fence line. Same with steel posts. Good job on that brace. That's how i build them. Looks good 👍
Boo ya
I sure hope u lived in Louisiana.
"Let's make this gate super strong!" Also "Let's remove the reason to make a strong gate and make it easy to enter"
I think super strength fights sagging gates, not intruders.
Super heavy 😂
Picture frame X gates are strongest
Talk about overkill
Who in the world takes their groceries threw the backyard?
Who in the world parks in front of their house??? My only experience with bringing in groceries is through my backdoor, so everyone MUST have the same experiences as me????
Lmao that brace ain’t gonna do shit 😂
Well the fence can hold about 2,000 pounds. So…:)
Looks like a “Mr. Fence” gate minus the cross grain angle brace.
Good job
I hate the cut out for the latch all that extra work and unfortunately small details like that are missed.can we see the whole gate? Use metal posts. Wood will rot over the years.
oo yea...and buy the cheapest Hinges...He never Mentioned those
😂
Never trust a guy whose safety glass don't have a single scratch 😂 point dexter over here trying to flex and "overbuilt" gate.
There’s no point into making the gate strong. Just going to add stupid weight
Nope! 6x6 or 8x8 for hinge side of gate. Always
Dude. If the nuclear war happens, you'll have other problems. And if it doesn't, that's a ridiculous waste of wood.
They gotta be the worst gate I seen on the Internet
Overbuilt,waste of money
Good job
