finally a video that explains how to set up a string line properly. Completly new to woodworking and every other video just says set up a string line without explaining. Thanks!
I actually appreciate this comment because I don't have time to watch this vid right now, but setting up the string line is one of the MAIN THINGS I needed to know!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words. My calling is to help people. Im not a professional but I strive in doing the best I can. If something I do looks great, I will pass on the experience to teach others. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
I almost never comment on RUclips videos but I’ve gotta say I watch a lot of how to videos on this platform and this has got to be the most comprehensive and digestible guide I’ve ever seen. The details and explanations so viewers can understand the why and not just be mimics. I’ve never even heard of compression strength but with your quick example I get why the brace goes the direction it does in a gate instead of just copying what you did with no shot of retaining that info for future use. I have literal pages of notes in front of me for this weekend’s project. Thank you.
You are very welcome my friend. I aim to show and explain the why on everything I do. You don’t get that as much on RUclips sometimes. Thank you for the kind words. Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply and have a blessed day my friend🙏😎
Okay, I love how clear this tutorial was. When I ever get my own place with a nice size yard, my goal is to get a dog, but I want to fence the yard in so the dog wouldn't bother the neighbors unless I'm living in the country. I added this to my new playlist of how to build things by other youtuber's tutorials. This was the only video I ran into so far, first one I clicked. And you explained everything so crystal clear and you showed which tools to use, how to measure and what the measurements should be. And you even made sure that we needed to know to have professionals check for water/power lines underneath the ground! I'll be sharing this video for sure!!
Well thank you so much for that compliment. It always makes me feel good to hear positivity from a professional. So sorry for the late reply. Its been a rough couple of months. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day and Happy Holidays to everyone. 😁😎🙏
Have a quick question for both of y’all if possible I’m doing a fence in obx NC would I need to consider spacing on the pickets for expansion? Thanks in advance
Wow, this is so straight-forward, NO experience needed! You don't even need opposable thumbs, eye sight or a limbic system to make this, this is so clear.
You are absolutely right my friend. Its not hard, people make it seem hard and not even try. NEVER STOP LEARNING, BECAUSE LIFE NEVER STOPS TEACHING. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day😁🙏
This is what RUclips is supposed to be. Funny, informative, and helpful. Great job and thank you for putting it together. No doubt that was a lot of work. Thank you - I'll be using this video to build my own fence!
That is awesome to hear brother. That is the whole reason I make videos, to help people in an informative but still entertaining way. Thank you for the encouraging comment. You are an inspiration. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day my friend😁🙏
🤣🤣🤣Thanks homie, I sure do appreciate that. I try to make it fun as much as I can. A new Texas Sidewalk Recipe will be coming soon. Have a blessed night and thank you for stopping by😁😎✌️
As someone who’s going to be building my own fence this winter, I agree. There’s another video on here about how to build a fence gate which I also love, but I’ve gone back to these two videos over and over. This video has answered several questions I’ve had with every other fence video. This video even has the added bonus of the gate and staining - things you also have to do on every fence project. So it’s great to have it all in one concise video.
I appreciate the speed of this video. I usually speed everything up to x1.5 but this one made me check if I had done it already because it sounded like it. Love it :)
Thank you for the kind words my friend. I try to be to the point and somewhat fast paced. Sorry for the late reply🙏. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
That was one of the best tutorial videos I have ever watched when it comes to explaining how to do something yourself and I was very impressed with every step you took in the process of building something that will last and even with 41 years in construction, I still continue to watch and learn from others to enhance my skills and knowledge because there is always something valuable in a well put together video by someone who knows how important it is to do something once and do the research necessary to feel confident about doing every step correctly and the best way possible to have it last. Your entire method for setting your posts is very impressive and the most effective way yet that I have seen because you didn’t cut any corners when it came to making sure that your post doesn’t rot because it is encapsulated in concrete, and you took the time to make sure you had a substantial amount of concrete on all 4 sides of your post and I am sure you were not happy about having to move them away from the property line, but it was obviously necessary with that particular neighbor and bringing the concrete up above ground level and shaping it so you have proper water runoff and no dirt near the post to cause rot issues. Also, your methods for strength and stability in your runners, and checking for crown in your runners are all great factors to include in your video and extra steps taken for aesthetic appeal and attention to detail are all great tips and points to include in this video. Amazing job and I would highly recommend this video to anyone who is interested in taking on this task themselves for sure and I don’t ever read all of the comments in these instructional videos, but honestly with my 41 years in construction, I can’t imagine anyone would ever consider posting any criticisms that may be in the comments, because I couldn’t find one single aspect of your process that I would critique in any way at all and I would just like to say thank you for taking the time to create this and edit this to absolute perfection and it held my attention 100% from beginning to end and was worth every minute of my time to watch and I would not hesitate to watch it again right before I was getting ready to build a fence just to refresh my memory on everything you did throughout the entire process. This is the only video anyone really needs to watch if they are planning to build a fence for themselves, including me. Thanks again and keep up the great work and contributions to your library. -Billy Miller/Handyman Services & Odd Jobs, LLC in Virginia I have the highest of standards in every job I do, and I would hire you in a heartbeat because it is so difficult to find someone who cares about their work and will go out of their way to perfect every aspect of whatever they are doing, and you prove this right here and with minimal maintenance that fence will last for generations and most homeowners never do after you put so much effort into something for them and they think it will just take care of itself. I will definitely be back to watch more of your work here.
My friend, you win the prize for the longest, kindest comment I ever received. Thank you very much. I always strive to do the best I can. I do my research and I never stop learning. There is a saying, “When you stop learning, you start dying”. Ill try and hold off from dying as long as I can. I am very happy I could help you and anyone in need to build a fence. But most importantly I aim to instill confidence in people that YOU can do anything as long as you try. Thats all I ask. Yes there will be negative comments but I love it🤣. Its just from people that are jealous and wich they could do a great job like this🤣. Its no big deal, there is all kinds of different people in the world, I just pray that they succeed in anything they put there mind to. Thank you for watching, for the great inspiring words and have a blessed day my friend🙏😎
This was perfect. Thank you for your time. Beryl knocked over my fence and a tree also fell on my house - went through the roof and took down a wall. Battling with insurance company to actually pay what it’s going to cost me to rebuild the damaged part of my home (20k under my lowest bid). Building my own fence to try and put money into my home repairs or for a lawyer 😂. Blessings from Richmond, TX
Im happy to hear that you don’t let small troubles get the best of you. Im proud that you have the mindset that you will not give up and let bad times bring you down. Im happy to help. I got hot by Beryl as well and the fence is still standing🙏Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😎
@@FunkyColdMedinaDIY Thanks for replying. I needed the motivation. Whoever built the last fence buried all the posts 3’ deep. Some have rebar…. I was unable to use a farmers jack because the posts are too old and break. When I wrap the chain around the concrete after digging a couple feet the concrete breaks. Had to dig out 14 posts in this Texas clay. Each one took 2 plus hours to dig out. Cut my fiber optic cable in the process (it was marked but it was right next to all the posts and bound to happen) All holes are gratefully filled to the top with water from the rain. Resting up for the weekend 💪
@@johnm9115 Man that definitely sounds like some work but I know you can do it and will rebuild it right. Someone has to do it, either you or someone else. Might as well be you sir. I wish you the best and have a blessed day my friend 🙏😎

I’m looking at buying my first house and the property needs alot of work done. One standout is how old the fence is. Not sure how I’m gonna remove the current fence, but this video definitely gave me confidence to install a whole new one. Thanks for the informative video, I’ll be rewatching as I install it! Keep at it man 😎

Yo man, this video has straight up inspired me to start my own dyi fence. I was apprehensive at first but your vid helped me decide to do it and not be afraid to mess it up lol. Thank you! God bless.
THANK YOU brother. My goal is to encourage people to ease their mind that you can do whatever you put your mind to. Im not a professional but I always aim to do the besy I can. If I make a mistake then I will from those mistakes. I pray for much success for you. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day😁😎🙏
I think this an outstanding video, both content and editing. I build fences for a living. I can honestly say that you definitely need some experience to build your own fence. The first fence I built was for a little old lady. I asked her to pay for the materials and an extra $20 for my beer. That was 15 years ago. That fence and what I can build today is night and day. Looking at your tools I can see that you have about $500-600 in tools. Someone with zero experience isn’t going to have most of these tools. Not discouraging anyone from building their own fence. Just saying that digging holes and pulling up broken cemented fence posts isn’t fun in any weather. Handling circular saws and drills in the hands of an inexperienced person can be dangerous. And lastly, heat stroke is a real thing. You don’t know you’re getting it until it’s too late. Thanks for sharing!
Hello my friend. Great comment. Yea I have a lot of tools but I try to use the basic power tools as much as I could. Yes it does take a lot of work but the main purpose of this video is to show people you don’t always have to run to someone else to do something for you. As long as you put your mind to it, you can do anything. Yes heat stroke is real and I leave it to the individual to gauge their own health when attempting any task, especially outdoors. Great comment, thank you for your time. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day😁🙏
@@FunkyColdMedinaDIYthanks for accepting constructive criticism. I honestly didn't want the average dude throwing a lot of time and money on something they're probably not equipped to do. Many videos make it look like it's easy. It's far from it. Again, thank you for a great video. Good luck all.

We mark our runners at 9", 39" and 69" that way you'll have 4" on top and 4" on bottom. We screw the kick board on front of pickets, cool how people do things differently. Looks good brotha
Ah ok cool. Thank you for the advice. I will definitely use that next time. I didn’t really have a set measurement to place my runners. I placed them where I thought it would be best. I didn’t want to get much outside influence since the video was about building a fence with no experience. I definitely learned a lot and appreciate others suggesting different methods without being arrogant🤣Thank you for your comment, for the kind words and for watching. This video was absolutely amazing it makes me think that I can do this on my own even though I know I absolutely can't I had a young Carpenter build my fence 2 years ago and it is horrible
I completely understand. I see crappy fences built around my neighborhood and that encouraged me to build it myself and me and my family love it. I believe in you and if you need a hand, try to reach out to family and/or friends. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁

The fence is still straight and solid. Ill make a 1 year follow up soon. Thank you for watching, have a blessed day and Happy Holidays to you and your family 😁🙏🙏🙏
This is not the typical fence. This guy does everything exactly as it should be done. It’s expensive but you get what you pay for. So much attention to detail.
Thank you so much Mike. That is exactly the answer I have been waiting for. Instead of the usual, “oh you overdid it” type comments. I think they just wish they could do a great job like this but didn’t. I will be making an update video and will release it as soon as it is finished. My faith has definitely been kicked up into high gear and it has helped tremendously. I currently feel 110%. You will be the first person to know what I have been dealing with, as far as RUclips comments go. Back in late January of this year and dealing with many neurological symptoms, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. An autoimmune disease that tells your own immune system to eat inflammation, which it is so supposed to, but it targets the nerves of your brain and spinal cord. It eats the inflammation but the body tells the disease to keep eating and it eats away at the coating that covers the nerves from your brain which causes neurological deficits. It’s actually more common in females. 66% compared to 33% for males. The percentage chance of me getting MS is 0.1%. I remain positive and do what I have to do in order to prolong my life and health. There is currently no cure for MS but I will be starting a monthly shot treatment once a month to keep the attacks from happening. I will be fine and I explain much more in the update video coming soon. Thank you for your blessings and prayers. Have yourself a blessed day😁🙏🙏🙏🙏

My first video of yours I have seen and I must say, Great job Sir! IMO I would have put a small gap in between slats for a little extra wind draft, I know it’s only a 6ft fence and doesn’t block much but every little bit of wind helps on a hot day! :) Also, here in Florida we are required to have the “pretty side” facing outward even if it’s towards the neighbors house… Keep up the good work my friend! 👍🏻
Thank you very much for the kind words. Yes I didn’t space the pickets since I knew that they would shrink as time went on. Currently there is a 1/4 inch gap in between the pickets. I tried looking up which face to have the fence but could not find anything here in Houston, Texas. BUT my neighbor had been giving me a hard time and she did not want a fence, but we did for 14 years. I finally said “enough is enough, I am tired of waiting”. So I said screw it and got my survey. I actually built the fence 8 inches away from her property line so that way it would be MY fence and she couldn’t say anything. Is that the right thing to do? I am not sure but I will not take it down. So far no problems and me and the neighbor are still on good terms. I hope you were not affected by the hurricane, if so, I pray everything is ok. Thank you for your comment and have a blessed day. Thank you for the Florida love😁😎✌️

Thank you for the Texas love. I was thinking about getting a surveyor just to be sure where the property line would be but I remembered when I purchased the home, a property survey was included with the long list of paperwork that you are given when buying a home. I went with that, which seemed to be legit. My neighbor said she also had a survey but always had an excuse and never showed me anything. I decided to wait no longer, so I built the fence 8 inches toward my side of the property so my neighbor couldn’t say anything. I haven’t had an issues. With the neighbor or the fence🤣. Man you really do seem to reply to all comments lol so here's my shot. I'm really lookin at replacing fence (my own and others) moreso than building one where one doesn't already exist. With that that said, I think that just changes the first few steps of the process. I do have a few questions that you may be able to help me with: 1. Is there any reason to NOT use an existing post hole rather than digging new ones or avoiding old ones? 2. You use quite a bit of concrete and I've seen several different ways of doing it. What would you honestly recommend as the most time/effort/cost efficient way to do post foundations (concrete) while still acquiring a favorable result? Really enjoyed your video. Love that it's each step from start to finish. Only wish I had found it sooner.
Replacing a chain or wooden fence? Chain likes are normally 10 feet apart so the post won’t like up to wooden fences being spaced 8 feet apart, also you don’t know how far they previous post went down, or how much concrete they used, or if they even went pass the frost line, but visually I would say go with whatever works, but for longevity, definitely dig your own post and do it right, have the battle is already won when you have your post set correctly
Great question. You are more than welcome to use existing holes. Just make sure they are the right depth and width. I didn’t have any existing holes so I had to dig them myself. No biggie. As far as the concrete usage, I wanted a strong foundation. We get hurricanes from time to time and want to protect my hard work as best as possible. Plus, concrete is cheap. Make it strong. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day. Sorry for the late reply😁🙏

You are very welcome my friend. If you live in a climate that gets hot and dry at times, with no rain, make sure to water the fence line or install a water hose that slowky drips water. That way your main posts wont start to wobble out of place. Thats what im doing now. No rain in the forecast the next ten days and we haven’t had any rain for at least 10 days already. Thank you very much Virginia. I try my best and love to show people how I would like to be shown something. It can be done by anyone, as long as your able bodied. Sure some things could have been done better or they may have been over done, but the end result is a strong fence built with no experience. Still standing strong. I will make an update video once I hit the year mark. Thank you for watching and most importantly, for the kind words. Have yourself a blessed day Virginia😁😎✌️
Outstanding video!!!! You are a super handy guy! I almost think I could do my own fence in a similar manner, but I don't have all the great tools you already seem to have....hmmmmm? Your editing of this video was outstanding! Fast moving fast paced video that always holds your interest! Great job and thanks!!!
Thank you sooo much for the kind words. Yes I have a Collection of tools that I have gathered over the years. I try to be handy and be an example to my 3 sons (Step-sons) whom are pretty much grown. My oldest who is 28 thanked me on Christmas for being g a great example to him. He is now fixing things around his home and doing a heck of a job in life in general. Anybody can build a fence as long as you are able bodied and have the Motivation to do it. It also doesn’t hurt to have a small hand here and there🤣 Thank you for watching, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year😁🙏🙏🙏
😁Thank you for the kind words my friend. Not an engineer. Actually a firefighter. I just have always had the drive to learn to do things myself and learn from others. I’ve gotten better by learning from my mistakes and from others. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
Thank you very much my friend. I waited over 14 years for the neighbor to pitch in on the fence but there was always an excuse. I said the heck with it and just got it done. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day😁🙏
Man, you have nice dirt to dig in in your area, where I live it's all bentonite clay and so along with your post hole digger you need a spud bar/digger bar and it's always a good idea to soak the area before digging, you wouldn't make 2 inches deep if you only had the post hole digger
Thank you my friend. I got lucky with the dirt. We had a rainstorm a few days prior to digging and it made things so much easier. Now with no rain the last 2 weeks, the ground is hard as a rock and would be a challenge digging. Watering the area prior to digging is definitely Plan B. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😎
Pretty friggin good. One note - most places don't allow you to put the ugly part of the fence on the outside(facing other peoples property). So to me, this fence was made inside out lol. Good video overall though and really informative!
Thank you for the kind words. Yea that what people keep telling me but I don’t understand. If the fence was built with the good side facing the neighbor, then I would have the ugly side🤣. Someone is gonna get the ugly side🤣. I don’t care because I paid for the whole fence, so I decide🤣🤣Sorry for the late reply, thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
@@FunkyColdMedinaDIY I mean, it's all based on the city code and if they actually enforce it. My city - stockade style has to face outward, picketed with gaps it doesn't matter. Town over they don't mention anything. Didn't realize until after my comment how localized the ruling really is for it. Either way, this has definitely helped me with my fence. Thank you and Happy Memorial Day! I'm sure you're putting that fence to good use for a cookout!
@@Shadowjones thank you for the info, yea the city of Houston don’t give a dang about hardly anything🤣 All I care about is that my video can help and/or motivate someone to take on any challenge . Thats all I care about🙏. Thank you for reaching out and have a blessed Memorial Day🙏😁
You got that right. Insurance keeps getting higher and higher. Id rather build it myself if I am able to and feel good about myself taking on a challenge. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day. Sorry for the late reply😁🙏
Insurance has always been a scam except for way back at the beginning. And the reason being is people like you guys have always went running to your Insurance to pay for everything. Fires, floods, catastrophic events is what Insurance is meant for. Not fences, not carpet, not even if a contractor says they can get your Insurance company to pay for a new roof. SCAM
Insurance keeps going higher because people use it to get a new fence vs learning a few skills and doing it themselves. However this video made the job way more challenging then it is for most people.

As long as you try, thats more of a start than someone that called someone to build it for them. If you are able bodied, I believe anyone can do it. Get a family member or friend to help if needed. try using 3-4-5 measurements when setting the posts :) .. drilling into the house .. i would highly advice yoo to fill it with silicone before screwing the post to the wall .. that way no water will enter the house .. its minor ofc but takes only a few secs to add the silicone
Hi, first of all love the video and my question is how many hours a day did you take to do the fences. I could imagine you had to work on the weekdays how did you manage that?
I worked on it for about 8-10 hours a day. Once you got the posts in and they are dry, you can then work on the actual fence. I have a 3 day weekend every week so I just do what I can do. It doesn’t take too long. I will do it myself every time as long as I am able to. Thank you for watching, have a blessed day and sorry for the late reply. 😁😎🙏

Great question, sometimes I over do it. Just wanted to protect it more. Yes it is pressure treated but I rather be safe than sorry. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
That is a great question. It depends on if your neighborhood has rules and some people say the braces should face your side of the house so people cant climb over into your yard. . I actually paid for this fence in full and had it 6"over on my property so there wouldn’t be any question about it. I prefer the clean side and if someone wants to get in to your house or yard, they will find a way.

Thank you.

There is currently no cure for MS but I will be starting a monthly shot treatment once a month to keep the attacks from happening. this instructional video is fabulous! Direct, efficient, thoughtful and thorough. Thank you so much, I feel like I could build a fence myself! Once I get all the fun power tools...

I try to encourage people to take on a challenge and who knows where it will take them in the future. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😎
I love it. I would personally just make those top middle and bottom pieces on the inside of my fence. I wouldn’t want someone to use them to jump over

First time (female) fence builder here. I can’t say thank you enough!!! Would love to share my before and after so you can see how much you are helping people! Is there somewhere to do that or can I email them to you! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Amazing video! Very informative and professional! If all tutorial videos did this it would be the cherry on top but that would be adding all tools, supplies and equipment used in the video for whatever project they do. Other than that gotta love videos like this! Keep up the good work! 👍🏽
Thank you very much my friend. I plan on adding tools and supplies used but you can use any basic brand of tools. Doesn’t have to be high dollar. Thank you for watching, sorry for the late reply and have a blessed night🙏😎
Dude, you obviously know what you're doing. I have to admit, I was LOST through some of this. Not because you didn't explain it well, but because I'm the least handy person around -- but working on that. 🙂
🤣Thank you for the kind words my friend. Ive always been the type to learn how to do things myself and not HAVE TO count on someone else for every thing. Its taken a period of time and mistakes but thats how we learn. “The greatest mistake a man can make, is being a afraid to make one”. I know you can do it, I believe in you.
Dude!!! What a thorough video. You did an awesome job and kept it entertaining. Thanks for what you do.

This is very inspirational- did you hire a surveyor to check on your property lines and if you how much did it cost you - Austin Texas here!
Im not sure how much it would cost, I’m sure a google search for land surveyors in your area will lead you in the right direction. Thank you for the love, your comment and the kind words. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day😁😎🙏. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Great video neighbor!! It's funny because I have the exact same problem with my own next door neighbor😂😂

Nice fence. The lower stringer looks like it would help to discourage under fence digging. Nicely done.

With home insurance now being a scam and instead of going through them to get a fence fixed after a storm I am now here
You got that right. Insurance keeps getting higher and higher. Id rather build it myself if I am able to and feel good about myself taking on a challenge. Thank you for watching and have a blessed day. Sorry for the late reply😁🙏
Same!
However this video made the job way more challenging then it is for most people.

try using 3-4-5 measurements when setting the posts :) .. drilling into the house .. i would highly advice yoo to fill it with silicone before screwing the post to the wall .. that way no water will enter the house .. its minor ofc but takes only a few secs to add the silicone
Great advice. I will definitely remember that and pass on that great knowledge. Thank you for watching and your advice. Have a blessed day🙏😁
Hi, first of all love the video and my question is how many hours a day did you take to do the fences.

Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
Question: is the pickets faces to your side or neighbors side ? Good video 👍
Thank you for watching and have a blessed day🙏😁
