Intentional language learning is rather interesting in the sense that people expect results in very little time. A native speaker typically isn't expected to use their language at all for a few years, but rather just absorb the information - yet someone who decides to learn a second language is somehow hoping to be able to form basic sentences and have a simple conversation after a few minutes. I am no expert, but it does seem reasonable that a language learner should approach the challenge without too much stress and unrealistic expectations of progress, and instead take things in a comfortable pace.

The difference to a native speaker is that native speakers learn their first language when they are a baby and a toddler. As such a young human you have zero resources and your brain is still very small, so all you can do is absorb and mimic.
When you are grown up, however, the methods of learning a language are plenty and there are several systems that you can use as an adult that can speed up your language learning process significantly. You are not a toddler anymore.
So depending on the language you are learning and the way you are learning it it's not unrealistic to be able to use the language rather quickly in a simple way.

Your story of wanting to learn Chinese is almost exactly like mine! I'm 100% Chinese but since moving to the Uk at a young age, I lost touch with it and feel disconnected and somewhat embarrassed when visiting family in Malaysia because I couldn't read or express myself as well in the language. I'm intermediate level but want to progress to fluency. Your tips are very helpful, I'm aiming to apply these to new languages in future.

Language learning is super easy and fun. As long as you have the interest and motivation, nothing can stop you from learning it. For me I’m well versed in four foreign languages excluding my native tongue and want to add two more. It’s easy so long as you’re interested in the country it’s people and their culture. You can’t really learn a foreign language without any of those ingredients!😮

Thanks for the sharing. Actually I can absolutely talk with English native speakers for some common topics. And English is my working language. Whereas, each time I start a vocabulary APP to improve my vocabulary pool I feel terribly anxious because there are too many words unknown for me. I am also looking for a motivation to keep moving forward like the dilemma as you mentioned that as an adult, we have to work or take care of my kids. That makes me frustrated somehow. Not like playing a game, I can get money and experience for each action I make in a video game. Most of time, I get nothing from English learning. I can feel apparently I am not capable to memorize a word than when I was younger. All of above makes me frustrated. Thank you so much for the video. I think I can persist no matter how exhausted. I don't want to lose the connection with my friends in Australia. I believe one day I can get to the US to visit my cousin. I can go to London to see a football game for Arsenal. I can get to Australia to see my best friends. Keep moving then.

Peace be upon you all. The part that interested me was the "goal". Determine the goal that will motivate you at the time of failure and frustration in the journey of learning the language . As for me and to answer your question, I would like to learn the Chinese language "Mandarin" to go through a new experience and adventure that I add to my life and get to know its people, and go through the experience of living with them, and as long as I am alive I will learn more a possible number of languages " (God willing / إن شاء الله) " Yes ! I am currently learning French and English 😎🗡️ .... and finally, I wish you success in your work Miss Izzy and everyone who aspires to learn, learn and learn

@IzzySealey Izzy you know how crazy I am, I'm trying to learn Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Arabic at the same time despite how bad an idea that is lol 😂 of course that's on top of being a doctor, making RUclips videos etc etc... Anyway, I'm in the process of managing my time and energy better, including making time for doing just a teensy weensy bit of language learning when I'm feeling too tired to do anything else! "What is your why?" is such an important point - one of mine is that I'd love to communicate with my patients and my viewers in their language! I would LOVE to learn Mandarin eventually (my sister has managed to teach herself!) so I very much look forward to your course! 🔥🔥

Would just like to add that immersion is an unskippable part of the process. Anyone who wants to know the science please read Dr. Steven Krashens - input hypothesis. I have noticed the difference between speakers who still use English as a crutch to 'translate' in their head, versus people like myself who went completely monolingual for extensive periods of time. As a Brit who studies in South Korea, I have seen people who only 'study' and people who mostly immersed, the difference is night and day. Especially when giving class presentations in Korean. Either way, I enjoyed the editing style and your funnels in the description are nicely layed out. I think it's an effective business model you've got going here, definately will be taking notes. I hope looking into Steven Krashens research helps with your Mandarin journey.

very cool ! i am a registered massage therapist in Ontario,Canada and over the years there have been soooo many moments where a mainlander has spoken to me and i used what limited chinese i had to say a few words. Usually just to say yes or no or greet. They'd be soooo happy and then so disappointed that s all i had
however, there have been a few patients who are chatty and will talk to me in chinese. i forced myself to speak chinese each time and if i didn't know words i would say it in cantonese or english and we would both learn
2 months later, i started getting random comments saying my chinese improved alot since we were a full on conversation. My BIG goal atm is to learn how to read and write traditional characters
i just wanted to leave this comment because its nice to share the journey with someone - i think mandarin speaking wasnt too big a transition since i already speak cantonese fluently
im also learning bits n peices of Viet (very difficult) to impress a girl, Hindi in case of telemarketers and Arabic - after all, canada is very diverse

You seem like an amazing woman, and I enjoy your videos. But I am also amazed at how you think so differently from me about everything. I am learning Mandarin here an there as my seventh language. I am learning it not because my girlfriend is from China, but because it is a really neat language, (but I might skip for the most part reading and writing characters). As a teenager I read Shakespeare instead of going to school. I learned the power of language and realized I could do anything in life by mastering language. The Chinese have great performing arts and knowing Mandarin should help me appreciate that -- and performing arts also have great power. Medicine is interesting, I guess,. but it seems like a mystery to me.

Saved! I am going to revisit this next week. Being of mixed British/Nigerian heritage, I used to be able to speak my mother's tongue a little when I was younger. I've always had quite an ear and interesting in languages. However, having been through and worked in our school system, our culture and education doesn't necessarily emphasise the joy, importance and utility of learning other languages. I really want to pick my Korean back up and this was a big motivation boost!
Thank you, Izzy! You have a very brilliant knack of explaining things in a palatable way, and your diction is so lovely. It's actually quite soothing to listen to and learn simultaneously :D

My entire plan for mandarin is low energy, It's only comprehensible input for now
It did work for english, using youtube for the past 10 years or so. It did also work for French (my mother tong ) technically, since that's pretty much how language is acquired
