Welcome to the debut of the Signature Move Tier List, where we dive into an iconic video game technique, break it down in a series of trials, and finally, stack it up against the competition. Today, we tackle Link's Spin Attack, a longstanding pillar of the iconic character's combat style that has appeared in The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Hyrule Warriors, and further titles. This is also a video that Age of Calamity and Breath of the Wild 2 will outdate very quickly, so a revisit may be necessary at some point.

This series definitely has merit, looking forward to see what you come later on! My biggest suggestions would be a move from the Shotos or Terry, a core projectile for a character (Samus, Mega man), and a move that has absolutely no combat use outside of smash, like pocket or judge.
Rush down characters? Glass cannon characters? Living combo tree characters? Skill check characters?
Eyes peeled for more in the series. I believe this is an excellent direction to take your content, friend.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!

This video had some incredible polish, and your ability to analyse moves and characters in an interesting and engaging way makes for a thoroughly enjoyable watch. Keep up the great work, dude.
Fantastic video! Amazing research and editing, but that's what I should expect for your videos. For the next video in this series, try Mario's fireball, that has plenty examples of it's power and versitility. Again, thanks so much for the content, you do phenomenal work, man.
I know this video doesn't have as many views as other videos, but please continue this series!!! I personally really enjoyed this vid,
I will, thanks! This video has actually done better than I expected it to, it's an investment into a future direction for the channel, no worries there!
Very interesting video indeed, I've been a big fan of your content for awhile now and I'm excited to see the rest of this series. My personal pic for ep. 2 is Mario's Jump.

Yeah, when I was putting out teasers for this I got a _lot_ of different interpretations of what the video was actually going to be, not really possible to avoid. Hopefully with more episodes the premise becomes clear!
It seems to be a common theme with mockrock, he makes a video on a seemingly common topic and takes it on a whole new direction to the point where you actually feel well informed on game design by the end of it.
In summary, It's always a pleasant suprise.
The video would of been like 10 minutes tops if it was just LUNK

I think the order is worst, brawl, brawl his spin attack was ass for recovery and killing, next was melee, it was good in melee, but not that consistent in the air not bad but not better than the one I'm about to say, next 64 great kill move not the best recovery, smash 4,amazing,ultimate like smash 4 but better

I’m so surprised this was made literally 30 minutes ago. I was so ready to binge watch the series
I'd better get to work then!
Feel like RPG characters won’t get too much out of this series just due to their game’s nature
The criteria will be slightly flexible in cases where it's clearly necessary. At least for the first while though, all the candidates I'll be putting in the voting pool will make sense for the criteria in this episode.

MockRock well either way I really enjoyed this. As someone who’s only Zelda game was BotW, I was really cool seeing an analysis of all of its incarnations. Something I will never get is the long animation, and the "hit once, can't get hit again", particularly with Adult Link. It has mostly been a single, maybe double complete turnaround in Zelda, yet in Smash, he spins around 5 or 6 times. I never quit understood why, mostly because the few incarnations that do take a long time to finish can hit the same enemy multiple times.
Honestly, if they're going to keep it as single hit they should just have him do one spin.
I think it’s a risk/reward. It’s super strong as a kill move and is also really quick. It allows for a good punish if you whiff, but an early stock lead if you connect
Do you want a Smash 64 recovery? Because that's what you'll get for one spin.
Lol imagine Mario on this tier list it’s just “I can do a jump”

Absolutely the screw attack, it’s literally the Metroid logo
@@TheBlueWizzrobe absolutely. Metroid isn’t Metroid without the Morph Ball, whereas the Screw Attack is just a lame attack
Morph ball
I think you really undersold how good the quick spin was in the 3d games, it's often the highest dps option when chained into other quickspins
I love the idea of this series, it's the exact kind of thing I can see binging over and over and over once theres a good few episodes more to it. As for a move I think would be cool to see... Sonic's spindash or Mario's fireball!

Haha, appreciate the kind words, but uploads being spread out isn't a "minor drawback," it's a huge issue! I did just recently switch to RUclips full-time though, so you should see more from me soon.

Don't forget the mushroom
@@loricwhovian3761 the mushroom isn't really an attack
It's probably going to be a Diddy situation where he has three signature moves
Solid stuff as usual!
My only peeves here are:
1- No footage/mention of the Four Swords Adventures fully charged spin attack (after reaching the Force Gem threshold)
2- I think it at deserves a passing mention that Link's forward-air is very likely modeled after an 'uncharged' spin attack, resembling Ocarina of Time's especially-- even hitting behind Link in Smash 64 before the move was slowly streamlined across games. A bit of speculation and hearsay if we're JUST going over the move titled "Spin Attack", but I think it speaks to how iconic it is in Link's repertoire.
Looking forward to more of the series though, very excited!
Good feedback! The Four Swords Adventures addition wouldn't be a bad idea, I was trying to avoid getting too stuck in the weeds with _every_ variant of the move ever seen but that one is probably unique enough to include, good call. In regards to his forward air, I generally stayed away from too much stuff that was "Spin Attack-esque," which is also why I don't directly mention, for example, the Back Slice from Wind Waker/Twilight Princess. It's already a heavy topic, so I tried to stick to more explicit references.
@@MrMockRock Fair enough, and totally valid!
'Wish I had more ideas to give about this new video series but I'm honestly just excited to see more for now, and thanks for responding to me :)
I think the Wii version of TP should get a mention as well as there the spin attack has no charge-up at all. But instead has a prolonged cooldown. That is huge for it's main purpose which is to push enemies back if you are getting overwhelmed.
I'm really interested to see where this series goes. Videos of the signature moves from the Pokemon characters are gonna involve exploring the nightmare that is competitive Pokemon and I look forward to that.
Sooooo I'm expecting Spindash sometime
(It's used everwhere, Sega Heroes, when he crossed over into other mobile games like some monster fighting one, in his Lightspeed Attack from Adventure and Team Attack in Heroes)
Link must be really dizzy by the end of this video
It's so satisfying when you hit every slash and kill your enemy. That is before trey spike you
I’m seeing what rating would get the Monado Arts
My vote goes to Luigi's Poltergust, but I have to say I am anxiously awaiting Sonic's Spin Dash/Charge!
Some of my ideas:
Fire Emblem: Critical hit or Astra
Bowser: Fire breath
Yoshi: Egg lay/throw
Peach: Float? I mean it is her iconic characteristic
1998SIMOMEGA
True
Love this series concept. Just one question: How can a character like Snake be rated here, tho? Were his signature move is his CQC and stealth. By his throws? By stealthily placing C4 on opponents? By both?
This series is gonna be fun. Ike’s aether, Ryu and Ken’s shoryuken and/or hadoken, Joker’s gun, Sonic’s spin attack, Kirby’s inhale, there are plenty of great signature moves
Am I the only one who wants the next analysis of the tier list to be the Shoryuken (or however is written, sorry)
You deserve more subs! I was honestly so surprised to see you had 70k, that’s good but I’m sure you’ll grow so easy! Keep it up dude!
You should do the hadouken next!
Ok, the spin attack is great and all, but Link isn’t a blue hedgehog?!!?
he has been a goron before. turns out sprouting spikes all over makes you roll faster
Great video, I can't wait to see the next one, my favourite of the 3 would be Kirby.
My suggestion for a following video would be the general idea of the ground pound attack.
Regarding the character, there's a LOT of possible candidates, including pretty much every Mario and DK character, and Banjo-Kazooie.
Other good moves would be Samus' charge beam, Ryu's Hadoken, Pikachu's Thunder, Sonic's spin dash...
Ideas for next analysis
Sonic- Spindash
Mario- Fireball
Ryu or Ken- Hadouken
Samus- Charge Shot
Kirby- Inhale
Olimar- Pikmin Throw
I love this idea for a series, and this is a strong start too! Although I am curious, why do the scoring out of 5 if you use decimals? Using something like 9/10 is significantly better than 4.5/5
I love the hurricane spin from wind waker and I wish it was toon links final smash insted of the triforce slash.
On an off note, if your going to use a five point scale, but have numbers with .5s in it, why not just use a 10 point scale instead?
You have me wondering what kind of career (or major if you’re a student) you have outside of youtube. Your level or preparation and analysis definitely shows you can really shine in a lot of different analytical fields.
As a Link main, using the bomb to recover, tech, spin attack away from the stage, and catch the opponent offguard is very pleasing
Unbelievable... you didn’t mention the puzzle solving utility of the spin attack in the legend of Zelda game in Nintendoland for the Wii U...
"Link's Spin Attack." I'm aware that it shows up in Nintendoland (as well as the Hero's Spin on Mii Swordfighter), but doesn't count!
MockRock Wow I didn’t think I’d get a response to a lame joke! On a related note, what exactly were the criteria for what games you would use? Obviously the canon link games yes, super smash bros I would assume to be included because you make SSB content, but what made Hyrule Warriors, Cadence of Hyrule, and Soulcalibur count? (I’m wondering mostly about Soulcalibur.)
If you’re gonna use .5’s in points out of 5, just do it out of 10. It’s kinda weird to have a 5 point scale but have.5’s
I think another iconic attack that can be considered equal or more iconic that links spin attack is definitely Mario's fireball. It's been in literally every Mario game
This seems interesting, could you cover the mega buster in the future?
Very hyped for your next archetypes analysis video. I can't wait to see your zoner analysis.
BRILLIANT idea for a series, very excited to see where this is gonna go
Talk about Sonics homing attack or spin dash next!!!😊
I am so excited for this series!
1:17 mmm I can see why people like this game, she’s got a lot of “personality”
The uploads just keep getting farther and farther away....
Love this idea! Can't wait for more!
If there isn't an aether episode I will still support you but I will be sad
All Links will have some serious problems when they get old. Spinning too much is bad for your health. Lol
Style, control, damage and aggression, the only criteria you'll ever need
if u know u know
I’m probably a dingus but what is the 3rd silhouette in your intro. The one with the whip thing.
Would love to see a ScrewAttack tier list from Metroid!
Topics relating to the video :Scott the woz, wolf
I'm really excited to see the next videos in this series! Really love your work
What bothers me about the intro is that pit uses the electroshock arm
Will we get to see the shovel drop at some point in the future? It's not really an _old_ signature move but it's become iconic very quickly.
At least at first, this series will be limited to Smash characters, since that's what my audience is familiar with. If it gains some steam, though? Sure, I'm open to the idea of expanding its scope!
@@MrMockRock Yeah I figured. Obviously other things like Marios jump and Kirbys copy ability will come first. Shovel knight is an assist trophy though!

You can use spin attack in Link to the Past to move your character sprite close to an edge without falling off. Pretty handy in the Moldorm boss fights and for bomb jumping over holes in the ground!

In smash64/melee: I noticed that link’s audios sounds can also be found in OoT/Majora’s Mask. However, his scream during his up B seems exclusive to Smash64/melee. I’ve tried many times to get that audio clip to play as adult link in OoT. Does anybody know where this sound clip originated from? Thanks
Man, Breath of the Wild really does a disservice to the one-handed spin attack. It's strictly an utility attack, if you want to knock opponents away rather than combo, and for its charge up time, it's pathetically weak, hitting for just normal damage. To be fair though, the same can be said of the other weapon styles; their charge attacks do hit for normal damage, but they're devastating and reliable multihits (especially two-handed weapons, spin to win) while the spin attack… sometimes? hits twice while being inconsistent as hell I guess.
Without Urbosa's Fury, your classic Spin Attack definitely doesn't qualify for a powerful move in BotW, it just looks and feels powerful because of the knockdown effect, but that's as far as it goes.
That said, another excellent video, sasuga Mock Rock. Very strong start to a quite interesting series, can't wait for the next installment
