  • Super Smash Bros. has always been a crossover fighter, from Smash 64 to Smash Ultimate, which means that moves are usually coming from their home series into Smash. Link's Spin Attack, Kirby's Inhale, Sora's Sonic Blade, the bases are all covered. Because of just how huge and influential a series Smash is, though, every once in a while the opposite manages to happen...a move is invented for Smash first, and THEN it makes its way back to its home series. Let's look at some moments where this happened!

Thanks for watching everyone, and let me know what you thought of the list! There are at least a few more candidates/possible candidates I had to exclude, if any of them definitely deserved to be here make sure to make your case, maybe there can be a follow up at some point! Also need to make a small correction: I had a comment point out that Bowser does something reminiscent of the Whirling Fortress in "Mario's Time Machine," a third-party educational game of all things for the NES. It's not quite the same thing, but if I'd known about it while making this video (the game is so obscure it doesn't even appear in most lists of Bowser appearances) I'd certainly have mentioned it.

There's another metroid one, that for me, it was always a smash reference:
On smash bros, the grapple beam is a very important part of samus kit, because it can be used for recovery but it's also her grab. A.k.a, it's her tool for dealing with a shielding opponent.
And on metroid prime 3, they added that exact concept: the grapple lasso is a grapple beam with it's primary use being using it on enemies that are shielding themselves, like pirates or Rundas. Before prime 3, there was only one instance of grapple beam being used offfensively, which was on super metroid. There, you could shoot it at an enemy, but it would deal minimal damage, and it wouldn't attach to the enemy, and there was an easter egg that if you attached your grapple beam to electricty while Draygon grabbed you, it would also shock draygon. But none of these uses are remotely similiar to the smash bros version, with metroid prime 3's version being very similiar and being a genuine combat tool for samus. Heck, at first, you can't even use grapple beam for movement in MP3, you need an upgrade that is called grapple swing.
It's a shame that people sleep on that because Prime 3 is possibly the least popular of the prime games.

Kind Dedede never really threw around gordos until brawl, and never hit them with his hammer until smash 4, but star allies has him use an attack where he does, and since then, it's been a pretty iconic attack for him
Meta knight's brawl/smash 4 final smash was original to smash, but planet robobot has him use it in meta knightmare returns
King dedede even sits in his iconic crouching position from smash after you beat forgotten land

On this topic, there is something interesting about Roy's sword in regards to smash vs his own game. In his original game, the binding blade does use fire as a ranged attack, but if you do any fire emblem romhacking you will discover something interesting: the fire may have originally been a placeholder animation.
If you use romhacking tools to add a ranged attack to a sword, it defaults to the animation for the fire spell. The binding blade's lore describes it as more attuned to light magic. The theory is that since smash released before The Binding Blade and established the fire connection, the devs decided to just keep the original placeholder animation and just add a few more fire animations to the sword. Unconfirmed but still interesting

    • @DSaC_
      @DSaC_ 2 года назад +16

I'm not an expert on romhacking, but I'm gonna assume it has more to do with Magic Swords and data storage.
In FE6, the only 1-2 Range Swords are magic, and therefore need to draw a Spell animation when used at 2 Range. I assume that, due to a lack of instruction on *what* Spell animation should be used, it ends up loading the first one listed in the code, which would be the basic Fire spell.

What I find funny about Joker's grappling hook in Smash is that it works the opposite of how it does in Persona 5 Royal. While using the grappling hook on opponents in Smash brings them to you, using it in Royal actually brings you to enemies for an easier ambush. If anything, Byleth's use of the Sword of the Creator in his up special is more accurate to how the grappling hook is used in Royal.

One of my favorite recent Smash references comes from Kirby and the Forgotten Land. I forget the specifics, but one of the arena's waiting room quotes from Commentator Waddle Dee says something along the lines of: "Our hero is a veteran to battle, folks. Some fighting circles call him "The Pink Demon." The Pink Demon is his title in the boxing ring stage in Smash Ultimate.

    • @kirbystar0796

I'm not so sure about Metroid getting the paralyzer straight from smash. In Zero Mission you technically still have to charge your paralyzer, otherwise it won't paralyze the enemies, it's just that you don't have to keep the button pressed for it to be charged. I think the plasma shot from the paralyzer could be an interpretation of zero suit grapple beam which is definitely a smash original but since Metroid hasn't used that idea it wouldn't be fair to say Metroid took it from smash.

Original Smash moves that stand out to me are Mario and Dr. Mario's forward smashes, which are bursts of flames and electricity from their hands, respectively.
I often hear people wanting to give Luigi his Thunderhand ability from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga as a new Neutral Special. However, Superstar Saga came after Melee, where Mario first got his fiery forward smash and Dr. Mario debuted in Smash with his electric forward smash. This makes Thunderhand and Firebrand more likely references to Melee, so technically Thunderhand belongs to Dr. Mario.

Just a note regarding Other M's canonicity: Some things in the game (mainly Adam and Ridley) directly contradict things in both previous and later Metroid titles, so given that Other M's entire existence is barely acknowledge by later games let alone any of its story or lore, especially by Mercury Steam who do seem to care about that stuff considering they unambiguously canonized Prime and gave it a definitive place in the timeline via Samus Returns, it's safe to say that Other M is not canon.

*However* one thing you probably need to know and tread carefully about is you referring to Other M as canon. This is.. honestly kind of a hot topic in the Metroid community for the reason that it retcons every other game in the series and completely wrecks the lore which is one of the main reasons why it's not popular. In fact it's kind of why people say Other M *isn't* canon and can't be since it rewrites the lore so heavily and badly.

And after smash, with Fire Emblem Fates, they made his animations alot closer to how they are in smash.

Another Smash attack that end up being canon are both of Meta Knight's final smashes.
The first final smash appeared in Kirby planet robobot (for the 3DS) as one of Meta Knight's abilities.
The second final smash (the one from Ultimate) appeared in both Kirby star allies and Kirby and the forgotten land (both for the switch) as one of Meta knight's attacks in his boss battles, they're not called the same but they are the same move.

For all the people saying that Joker's Grappling Hook in Royal was inspired by Smash Bros, Royal was already in development when Joker's Smash Bros moveset was revealed. It's the exact same situation as Luigi getting his Luigi's Mansion 3 poltergust before that game was announced.

8:01 this is even better because there is a fire spell in crypt of the necrodancer, which is completely different from dins fire in cadence of hyrule

I wanna give a shout out to some of Sonic's moves.
His up smash is now in the IDW series, specifically the Metal Virus arc (plus I think some moves are similar to it in Frontiers)
His back air also appeared in IDW (also in Frontiers)
And something similar to his back throw appears in Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps

Sort of a neat one is Mythra. Xenoblade 2 released a year before Ultimate, Mythra appeared as a spirit in an alternate, censored costume featuring her black tights. A wholly original design for the character. Xenoblade 2 received a free update on the launch of Smash Bros, in both the base game of Xenoblade 2 and it's expansion Torna The Golden Country where Mythra appears playable in both games, there is now an NPC named "BroBro". When you talk to this NPC after adding Mythra to your party he was give you the best Critical Hit Rate Aux Core in the entire game (Mythra's best stat in Xenoblade 2) called "Massive Melee Mythra" (In Japanese the name is literally "Smash Brothers Mythra") when this Aux Core is equipped to Mythra it will give her the black tights from her Spirit design, BroBro will then recite the following line
"How friends getting on with Aux Core that Brobro gave as present? Did it improve power of Launch? Meh? No change to Launch power? ...Well, it special thing all the same. Brobro have strange feeling it maybe even most Ultimate item of all!"
When Mythra was added as DLC 2 1/2 years later these tights were included in her base costume as well as a pair for Pyra for herself (which never made it into Xenoblade 2)

I think things like Whirling Fortress are a major gray area. I mean yeah, BOWSER first used it Melee, but it's clearly based on several Koopalings in SMB3, plus some Ludwig in SMW, and is kind of just an extension of overall Koopa shell behavior. I mean, a lot of Ness's Smash moveset is made up of moves from his own series, but used by other characters.
