UPDATE 2: We've now confirmed with several people that have bought the monitor at retail, along with LG Electronics themselves, that retail 27GP850 models come with firmware that has MBR (backlight strobing) plus variable refresh rate disabled. What this means is that despite our initial review saying this feature was available, retail firmware has it disabled. LG CNS neglected to tell us this, despite our model supposedly being a retail sample in retail packaging. Chalk this down to another "communication issue" between reviewers and LG (see: previous issues with LG). The reasoning for the change is LG weren't happy with how this mode performed so disabled it. MBR is still available at fixed refresh rates, and of course variable refresh rates also still work, it's just that both features don't work together. We'll be updating the review as best we can to remove mention of this feature. We didn't think it worked that well - we recommended using MBR at a fixed refresh or not at all - so it doesn't affect the conclusion. But we will update the review to ensure it is accurate. UPDATE: In the original version of this review we described the "Faster" overdrive mode as "unusable" but that was an error. While the response data shown in the video is correct, we were also basing our assessment on an incorrect UFO Test image (not shown). The mode is in fact usable, but with some inverse ghosting visible - not "unusable" with significant inverse ghosting like we first thought. Overall this mode is not as good as the "Fast" mode, however the Faster mode is a lot better than what LG were offering previously in their 27GL850 so we don't feel "unusable" was appropriate wording to use. We've cut a few seconds out of the video as a result

One thing I'd like to recommend for future monitor reviews is showing the power cable design, whether it's just a cable, there's a brick in the middle or a plug on the end. That could be a deciding factor for some people because the absolutely massive plug this thing has blocks the outlet above, 3 outlets below, and if rotated 90 degrees, blocks both outlets on either side. If I knew this I would have went with a different monitor. They have the big round spot on the back of the monitor, so it's already not flat, why not just make that 20% bigger and put the power brick in the monitor? You really need to test the Benq Zowie high end gaming line and compare them, as they are often touted as the high end for gamers. It would be interesting to see how the measurements match the hype.
I really wish other brands would catch up to zowie's DYAC tech. Failing that, I wouldnt mind seeing a 27" 1440p 240hz zowie monitor, I'd rather have IPS but if they ticked those other boxes I could probably justify going back to TN

Cheaper(for SG) and apparently better than the 27" model (according to rtings) The fact that this monitor has one of the lowest power consumption and still perform incredibly well, is just amazing Just look the the G7, 2x the price and double the power consumption for that little unnoticeable performance
32GP850 definitely a great monitor. Only thing about the G7 that's immediately better is the contrast....but the colors on the LG are really damn good. Like you said it's cheaper also.
I'm done with LG monitors. Had the LG 32GK650F-B and still have the LG 27GL850-B (now collecting dust). Both suffered from horrible G-Sync compatibility issues and both had screen retention issues. I'd really love to see y'all do a breakdown of anti-motion blur tech and overall settings. I hear Dyac is amazing, but I don't want to spend $500 to find out, and I'm playing with AMA settings on my 2540k and noticing how things like contrast, sharpness, and black equalizer make a noticeable difference. I know I'm not the only one that wants to know about this stuff, and with the rise of next gen consoles it would be great timing, especially considering how important anti-motion blur is for controller players.
I keep seeing the G7 mentioned in reviews and recommendation videos on the channel but honestly I don't consider it to be best because of the 1000r curve. To me that makes it almost a niche product. When I was looking for a 1440p monitor I ended up going to rtings and getting the Asus ROG Strix XG27AQ based on that review. I think it should get a review on the channel here because it's an excellent monitor and also only 500 USD
Still bugs me that most monitors don't have console compatibility for 2k 120Hz yet. While the PX277 Prime might fall short in many categories (particularly price) by comparison, it does indeed support 2k 120Hz even on my Xbox One X, which guarantees compatibility with Series S and Series X as well. As someone with a massive backlog of Xbox games built up from over a decade, along with Game Pass Ultimate, having proper console compatibility is a must for me. Now if I could only get a Series X..
Hey guys, love your work and passion you put on reviewing each and every detail of the monitors and I'd like to say thank you for that, I was wondering if you have ever consider reviewing the LG 32GN650-B, I've seen a few reviews about this monitor but honestly not as detailed as you guys would so if you haven't and if possible could you see if it is a possibility to make a review or at least let me know if you would recommend it or not? You need to cover how LG cheated with the 27GL850 early revisions and didn't provide actual DP v1.4 support with HBR2 because they used cheap TCON and used non-VESA reduced timings which causes other problems. The later revisions fixed this but come with ABSOLUTE ZERO calibration from the factory (unlike the early revisions with the good reviews) and even trying to calibrate manually is impossible to get an accurate whitepoint because the adjustments are TOO COARSE. I'm never buying LG again. They are SCAMMERS and won't even provide support or FW updates anymore to fix these issues and others, example DP hotplug behavior which varies between revisions and is non-adjustable and causes issues with multi-monitor setups.
I worked on the older 27GL850 for a year and it is a pleasing display, although not the easiest one to calibrate perfectly. Temporarily I'm on an AOC 1080p 144hz 27G2 monitor and the stand is way better than even the new LG ones, as the base does not wobble at all and pivots. Also it's sRGB profile is spot on (except for the RGB balance) But damn, 1080p at 27" I always notice the pixels now when typing...
I got this monitor as everyone recommended it but i have terrible experience. When i'm 165FPS (gSync, response time to normal and vsync on in NV settings, in-game fps cap -3fps, connected with DP from the box) it's all good, but if i go down in frames it's like i'm on 60Hz. Tried different settings, updated drives, screen frimware up to date, overclock/no overclock, gsync on/off, responce time fast/normal/off. Nothing helps....

Nice video, thanks for the info. I'd really like to see a comparison between the MAG274QRF-QD and its non QD version. Its supposed to be less over saturated (less SRGB coverage), but there are currently no reviews on it using your metrics, so it's hard to know how well it holds up against the QD version in other areas.
There are no less SRBG coverage. Only less rec.2020 coverage. useless test. U need 12bit colors
Just picked up the newly released 32GP83B-B and color me impressed, there is such an improvement over the (G-Sync) 32GK850G-B monitor it's replacing. I don't miss the VA panel yet, this nano ips panel is great, fast transitions, little to no smearing in fast transitions. Great addition to my 6900xt!
Thumbs up for 'stash and ability to 'spit out' those monitor codes.
If MSI isn't stopped soon Tim will end up inadvertently summoning a demon or causing a rift in the fabric of spacetime.
Thank you Tim, for awesome review, just ordered 27GP850! Was thinking about MSI letterSoup-qd, but here in europe it's 130eur more expensive than LG for small improvements in some areas.
i got an LG27GL850 last year best monitor i ever had
Same
No complaints with my 27GL850. Bought off HUB recommendation too.
It's good, and maybe best YOU ever had, but definitely not the best in that price range. Msi mag274qrf (or qrf-qd) and giga M27Q, etc are better (along with some from Asus and dell).
@@shinkimo Doesn't the M27Q have that BGR pixel arrangement though, which I've read can cause text to appear blurry?
@@cybisz2883 it only affects a very low percentage of people. I believe it has to do with certain color blindness. But there's also a fix of using cleartype if on windows. Best to check before buying, but most reviewers you see, aren't affected by it.

true, very reliable 'fun monitor'
Of course they updated and improved it, I just bought a 27GL850 a few months back.
Not mad though, it is a great monitor. Mine is paired with a Red Devil 5700XT on water, and the gaming on it is very impressive.

Awesome details.

Wow now that’s what you call a review! Thanks!
Really looking forward to review of the 32" version, it looks like the industry finally woke up, because the lack of high refresh rate IPS panels in that size frustrated me for a long time

Same here!
cant wait till the new monitor releases and your reviews for 1440p recommendations afterwards!!
Man the G7 still surprises me to this day. Such a good monitor.
It's a good monitor, but has issues. I had 3 of them and returned them. First strange noise, hot display screen and losing signal. Second hot display screen, losing signal and stutter. Third the 2021 model Flicker and hot display with 1010 firmware. It's good but to many flaws for that price

I’ve got the 27GL850 and it’s so good. Keep an eye out for any bargains when this releases.
Got my 32GP850 yesterday. Amazing monitor. Cheaper(for SG) and apparently better than the 27" model (according to rtings)
The fact that this monitor has one of the lowest power consumption and still perform incredibly well, is just amazing
Just look the the G7, 2x the price and double the power consumption for that little unnoticeable performance
I got mine too. I love it so far
32GP850 definitely a great monitor. Only thing about the G7 that's immediately better is the contrast....but the colors on the LG are really damn good. Like you said it's cheaper also.
Just curious, how is it better than the 27" model? Is it the panel quality?
Why better than 27" ? the 32" has less brightness peak and no HDR certification. Check better what you red ;)
Nice one, still waiting for that Aorus FI27Q-X review before I make my choice
Yes please, i just dont understand why no one wants to review this monitor ive only seen like 2 good reviews about this monitor thats it.
I'm done with LG monitors. Had the LG 32GK650F-B and still have the LG 27GL850-B (now collecting dust). Both suffered from horrible G-Sync compatibility issues and both had screen retention issues. I switched to the true G-Sync ViewSonic ELITE XG270QG 27 and not only have I not had any of those issues it performs so much better. Less stuttering in games. Just an overall better performer.
@Garrus Vakarian I'm glad you had a better experience. LG has been a huge headache for me.
Why didn't you use FreeSync then?
It's the 27gp950 I'm looking forward to. The 4k144hz /w hdmi 2.1. Don't see it being easy to get though with silicone shortage and next gen console players looking to pick it up.
And hopefully real actual HDR! I doubt it tho.... :(

Can confirm, this is an awesome monitor, I've had it for a few days, love it but the fastest mode IS unusable at 180hz on 1440p resolution, reverse ghosting very notorious, even so, you won't be disappointed, colors are awesome, butter smooth performance.
Were you able to use 180hz and mbr at the same time? I have the same monitor but I can't do both.

What's rly impressive is the price itself I don't recall of the prior years refresh had a price hike but getting an overall 10-15% better monitor for the same price a year later is a huge win for LG imo

Upgraded to this from 1080p 60hz, Im blown away
Free Sync over HDMI is still problem with high refresh rate?
Nobody ever has the answer to this question.
What's annoying is that in the US, the Asus is only a little more expensive. While in Europe LG is $200 cheaper. Sad
I like VA panels but their not so good for games. Good move with and IPS panel, less contrast but much much better motion and adaptive sync.
Oh man, I was just about to pull the trigger on a GL850. I guess I'll wait for this.
Respect for running off those horrible model names like they're nothing. For the love of god LG and everyone else, please change your product naming!
Might wanna be more specific than just telling them to "change" it... I can only assume they'd make things worse somewhow.

I'm interested to see the Zowie monitors compares to your other previous tested ones, your testing methodology is amazing.

Hey Tim are you going to review the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQX soon? I enjoy your monitor reviews.
Thanks for this review! I had to return my MAG274QRF-QD due to dead pixels back in February, now this 27GP850 has come up below MSRP in Canada and about $100 cheaper than the MSI. Clear cut choice, should arrive by weekend :D
Would you recommend the LG27GP850 monitor for gaming? What's your experience with it? Thanks
@@TonyBurritoa year late but it’s amazing for gaming
Very torn between this one and the MSI MAG274QRF-QD. Assuming I'm looking to play games at around 70-100fps, which one would be the better choice?
What did you go with haha
@@JuztBillz I was torn between the two as well but went with the GP850 since it was cheaper and performance shown here but they’re both amazing.
My current monitor is a cheap 32" 2k 75hz workhorse, so I'm not interested in anything below a 34" 100hz+ UW
I still watched this entire video anyways because your monitor reviews are just so good
looking forward to the 32" review!
Just got it on sale, 380 usd. Already got the GL850 which I'm very pleased with.
Also it's sRGB profile is spot on (except for the RGB balance)
But damn, 1080p at 27" I always notice the pixels now when typing...
can’t wait for a review of the ASUS Strix XG349C!
2000€? :P
Did you solve the problem?

In your review of LG27gl 850 last year, the average gray-to-gray response time reported by you at faster overdrive setting was 4.08 ms.. But here you are saying it's 5.76 ms.. So what's changed in the last 1 year? Did you use a different 27gl850 for this test?

May I ask how you feel about the contrast? I am ok with contrast 1000:1.
But with the one Tim or other review showed, I have some concern even I don't play game in dark room.
So you are playing games with it not in dark room, right? What is your room environment or lighting?
As sometimes my room lightning environment will become a bit dark depends on the sunlight, the the room light is mixing yellow and white light.
@@HardyDimensionThe contrast ratio not fantastic, I don't have any big issues with it, but when I play RDR2 for example, I have a really hard time making out details when it is nighttime in the game, even with HDR on and manually adjusted brightness. It depends on what tradeoffs you're willing to make and what games you play, but I already know that I would rather have less refreshrate and darker black levels than the other way around, I'll probably switch to an ultrawide OLED next.
@@titaniummechanism3214 Appreciate your reply 🙏🙏 Actually, I am not really particular on monitor but also hope that it won't look worse. That's why I am asking around about it.
I know it is also involves personal reference, I saw someone mentioned he is fine with it even playing games in dark room. Some of them feel fine with it. So, I think I agree that it depends on what games you play.
However, you are using Tim's ICC Profile, right? I think you are good with the rest other than the contrast?
One thing though, 9:36 Tim mentioned about Dark Level Performance 27GP850 is having great result. But I do not know is there anything related to or could it help out low contrast issue 🤔🤔
Mostly people will get OLED next if price is not the issue 😆😆
