  • The classic Whites 5900Di detector. A favorite and highly collectible machine. I was very happy to come across one that was super clean. Problem was, it did not work. I decided to dive in with both feet. Turned out to be an easy repair. Now it really operates well. I like it better than my Garrett GTI-2500 Treasure Vision. For a vintage detector, this one has great features and is very accurate.

I'd love to get my lld Whites Coinmaster fixed. I once found a bb in a sandhill with it. So much better than my Whites Prizm 2.

    Hey Buddy,
Not sure if you can help me fix my Metal Detector. I have the Magna Trask 100, but have not used for over 10 years....lol. I checked the batteries, connection but nothing, it does Not turn on, so was hopping you can share some light on where to check.....a novice, so not very familiar with electronic equipment.
    Thanks,

Do you work with the M6 at all? I received one as a gift, and it worked for the first few hours, but then quit. The battery pack uses AAs, and we changed the batteries and it still does not work. The volume/power knob was loose though, and I am thinking we may have twisted a wire loose or something. I tightened the nut, after it shut off, and now the knob feels like it should, but still does not work. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have to wonder how my cheap little infrared thermometer would do for locating hot zones. I use mine to check for temps on circuit breakers in my shop and house panel to get clues to if a connection is getting crappy. It works.
That aside, too many circuit possibilities with the diode in, so, with one side removed, now you know... In the end, your video serves as a good reminder caps are probably one of the most common breakdowns we'll come across. That includes dealing with motors.

hi I just found this metal detector, for sale, for 250.00 do you think that's reasonably priced? I cant seem to find out how much they were, brand new. This one I found is obviously used but in great condition.

I have a 6000Di that has something wrong with it. I wish I could send it to you and let you find the problem. I can turn it on, set everything at "Preset", the needle bounces around and sounds like it's sending Morse code. Tuning knob doesn't make much difference. I'm stuck.

I just received a 5900 di pro sl and pretty sure it needs to go to the shop, the on/ off switch turns in circles where imo it should just have a four settings adjustment, it will turn on and off and the other two settings the way it is but pretty sure it is not correct, that's the first problem.
The second problem is it does not register the metals correctly, from a nickel to a penny to quarter, etc in fact pure silver doesn't make it to the quarter section on the meter so something is out of adjustment and I have tried two different coils same problem with the meter.
The third problem is how to clean the plastic covering over the meter?
Any suggestions or idea of how expensive to repair?

I have a 5900 /Di Whites just like the one in this video. It will not start. I did do the fuse test and the inline fuse from the positive post is bad. I saw in your other video there was a capacitor? that was bad that caused the fuse to blow? Should I replace the fuse and then check for a hot component?

    That was Awesome!
I detect for hobby for last 3-years now & started picking up old 70's-80's detectors as Wall-Hangers too.
Up to bout 8 of those oldies & some do work but goal is to start some troubleshooting like this down the road.
Now On to your next old Whites machine video for me!:)...

Hello, You can try some WD40 on the pot shaft. The issue is corrosion gets into the shaft, changing its dimension, causing the binding. Best thing to do is replace the pot

+XxdartvaderxX Hello, Yes can do. Best thing to do is use solid wire as new traces. Wrap them around the resistor leads, solder. If the resistors are large power type, secure them with adhesive on the pcb. Glad you like my videos. More are in the works. TD

I was given a coinmaster 5000/d series2 metal detector. When I turn it on the needle pegs out to the right and it keeps buzzing no matter what nob I turn. I’m pretty good at figuring things out but I know nothing about these detectors. I was hoping for some insight or information to help lead me in the right direction. Any thoughts?

I have a dfx that has a little problem.
After having it on for a half an hour I noticed that it would not turn off
when the power pack is removed and replaced, it would not turn on. After a few hours the machine went back to normal.
I sent a message to Whites and they thought it was the keypad being bad. I did not thinks so since this machine belonged to someone who had used it once and then died and the machine stayed in its case for many years.
the next time it did this to me,I decided to whack it on the side with my hand and Presto !! she would turn off and on again.
So I am thinking that something is getting warmed up that is not soldered correctly and creating an open between the keypad and somewhere on the board that controls on and off. I just don't know where on the board that would be.
    Do you have any ideas?

Hi, Today I bought a used Gold Master II and when I got home I noticed the battery holder was a little corroded so I cleaned it up with a tooth brush and a little DeOxit spray on only the battery holder terminals. I put it back in and it didn't turn on and when I was trying to get the battery pack back out one of the batteries had popped up and was preventing the battery pack from coming back out. When I figured out what was holding it up and pushed the battery back into place and got the pack out, I noticed the batteries were a little warm. Now it still won't turn on and I checked the battery pack terminals between each contact and noticed it some had resistance with an ohm meter. So I worked with it and got it to about 12.5 volts now (before it was about 6 volts rising to about 8 volts in about 20 seconds) but it stilljnow even on 12.5 volts it won't turn on, no battery test just dead. I put some straight pins into the battery leads and it's getting voltage to the leads and the plug they go to is secure on the board with zip ties so it didn't wiggle and break a wire.. The unit was working and the battery test for 7 seconds and all. Does it have a fuse or a diode somewhere? I've done board level repairs and I was a computer tech for about 20 years but I think something got fried. What do you think?

Check the headphone jack. When headphones are plugged in, the internal speaker disconnects. Sometimes corrosion sets in from non use. Inserting a plug and removing it, will work the contacts and allow operation of the speaker again, Try that

Mine is a cm 6000/d with the 2 battery pack. seems about 10 times more sensitive to aluminium. Geb norm , geb disk and geb max dont seem to work, i adjust tuning knob and just get solid noise.

+D-lab Electronics - I worked at a couple of TV/Stereo repair shops and one of the coolest tricks I picked up was paralleling a good capacitor with a suspected bad capacitor (open/dry). Usually, that'd be near the flyback transformer in circuits of a televisions with a wonky looking picture.
