I am with SRH think tank, this Auction has more money involved and much more confusion and competition. They know that putting together a top 5-6 cohesive batting unit is 70% work done. Remaining they will spend on good 2-3 bowlers and experiment with some combination of Abhishek and NBK or some new talent. Good enough to win most matches and go into top 4-5.

It's a shit strategy, they paid klassen 23 cr, Cummins 18, Abhishek 14, If they have to retain head & Reddy, they have to pay 18 cr & 14 cr, that's the minimum amount you have to pay, and Nitish is a capped player now, So the sum total of money they will spend is 87cr on 5 players, if they are gonna add 1 uncaped player that would be 91cr, the remaining purse will be 29, good fetching bowlers with 29 in hand and building the rest of the squad
If the rumors are true as some others are reporting that 2-3 franchines already approached Klassen and are willing to pay 22/23Cr if he goes back into the auction. What SRH did is right. Because of this modified RTM rule, teams would really hesitate releasing their key players back into the auction pool. It too big a risk if a particular bid goes out of proportions and basically plays spoilsport for the reminder of the auction.

Their top order set, only they need 3 bowlers, they can get 2 bowlers for 15c-16c even Bhuvi/Natraj and one new talent for less than 3c. They can use RTM on Bhuvi/Natraj. so they can spend another 20c from 3 bowlers. And easily they get new talent middle order batsman to fill the playing XI. Impressive move.
Use RTM for bhuvi ? R u serious he is outdated & injured he is not fit to bowl 135 consistently. Base price would be enough. Natarajan too he is just playing for money not fit for competitive cricket somehow he is managing Fitness in IPL. Bhuvi + natarajan should not go beyond 5cr combined. Instead they should invest in someone alternative like H Rana etc.

My doubt is, are the teams really willing to shell out half of a the purse for only retentions? I think teams will be thinking like 3 capped and one uncapped, 2 retentions. These retention caps has certainly turned out to be a headache for KKR, MI, SRH, etc

SRH had a phenomenal season last year and it created a lot of superstars. It is unrealistic for SRH to hope to retain all of them. At 23 cr, I would have let Klaasen go. I would have then gone shopping for a wk/bat like a Jurel or Jitesh for 8-10 cr and saved about 14 cr. With the purse left now, SRH cannot possibly keep/get Washy, Bhuvi, Nattu or Farooki or their equivalents. Bowling will take a huge hit and there wont be any bench strength at all. Pat 4, NKR+Abhi 3 to 4 ovrs. Head bowls for Australia but not considering here. Overall it sounds like 8 to 10 plyrs worth. 40c is still lot of money n u can easily buy bowling group n backups. 25c - 3 main bowlers 8c - 3 foreign backups 4c - one more big finisher 3c - domestic backups 5 at 20L, 3 at 50L to 1c range. This is quite comfortable. Remember other teams will have less purse than SRH by the time they buy what SRH retain.

This auction strategy is bad for other players, except these marquee players. They are bound to get very less money Bcz of this retentions. If most of these people are released, they will not get more than 15-16 crores in an auction. Virat, Rohit, etc brings advertisements and fan following. So if they go to auction they can breach 25 crores too. But not Klason or Head or anyone else. People should remember that it is a full auction.
Sorry Harsha I totally disagree with your insight of 16-17 crores for Heinrich klasssen in auction PBKS and LSG will step into the auction room with double the purse amount than other teams , especially PBKS will hike up his price till 20-21crores So if a team feels he's my main man without a second thought he's on the retention list and with the flexibility given within the 75 crores retention margin it's easy to convince nitish kumar reddy for a considerably lesser price to compensate for Travis head

This doesn't make sense because of the cap on a foreign player's salary. If the highest paid Indian gets 20 cr, Klaasen won't get the full 23, and the franchise is out 3 cr. By offering 23 to Klaasen, SRH is essentially saying, "We think the highest paid Indian player will get either this much or more." Maybe they know more than we do.
The intention was to let the players know they can ask for more than 18. Indian players committing for 5 years expect to be paid their worth. Clever strategy.

What I feel after watching your retention videos sir is that Ipl core committee is making the auction rules way too complicated to be interesting !! All these auctions, and rule changes, retention etc are to make the whole team making process more interesting so that they attract more viewers even before the tournament starts isnt it?? This auction strategy is bad for other players, except these marquee players.
They are bound to get very less money Bcz of this retentions.
If most of these people are released, they will not get more than 15-16 crores in an auction.
Virat, Rohit, etc brings advertisements and fan following. So if they go to auction they can breach 25 crores too. But not Klason or Head or anyone else.

This doesn't make sense because of the cap on a foreign player's salary. If the highest paid Indian gets 20 cr, Klaasen won't get the full 23, and the franchise is out 3 cr. By offering 23 to Klaasen, SRH is essentially saying, "We think the highest paid Indian player will get either this much or more." Maybe they know more than we do.
The intention was to let the players know they can ask for more than 18. Indian players committing for 5 years expect to be paid their worth. Clever strategy.
