- Here's is a breakdown of the great drum solo intro to Caravan as used in the movie Whiplash. I break it down into sections and then play the full intro at tempo at the end of the clip. Thanks for watching and here's a link to the score I played.

Great! Please dont remove this video. Its the best one on youtube for learning this.
Thanks for you comments. Is there any other tune that I might be able to help with? I'm just asking people who have found this helpful so I can get an idea of what would be the most helpful thing to post.
@@thedrumacademy do you know the solo from It Gets Funkier IV by Vulfpeck? I've always wanted to wrap my head around it.
why am I watching this? I don't even have a drum
Dry
Your trash
We’re on the same boat, mate.
Me too bro
Get drums
Thank you so much for this great video and transcription. You've done a brilliant job of transcribing this difficult track. I love the simplicity of the video too, no flashy graphics etc, just straight to the point. Keep up the incredible work!
I feel like this song combines every exercise from all of my drum books... all you need is to do is to practice the score of Caravan.
The ghost notes are quite tricky to get
@@sashafrancis-murray6963 I'd also argue that this is one of those songs that sounds like it's not that hard but in reality it's really fucking hard
@@thesmilingvagrants i would argue it sounds really fucking hard and is alot harder than that even
Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you've found the video helpful. Let me know if there's other piece that you might like breaking down. I'm basically getting very bored in lock down. I hope all is well where you are. All the best
@@sashafrancis-murray6963 I'm a metal drummer and this is at a whole other level of fuckery. Wtf is he doing omggg
thedrumacademy dude I need a tutorial on how to do these ghost notes I just can’t get them if u can would be good if not no sweat
0:35 basically a rhythm nightmare
It’s pretty easy to learn if you just take the ostinato and the hands and practice them on their own and put them together, with that method it took me like 10 minutes to learn it
Thank you so much, I've been trying to figure this out for quite a long time!
Thanks and I'm really pleased it helped you. Let me know if there is another tune you might like help with.
Most helpful video I have found. Please, it would be wonderful if you did a part 2.
I would like to thank you for this great video lesson.
You are a good teacher.
I already got the chart bro you helped me so much thank you!
I love this song from Whiplash well played
Thanks Chris. You were the inspiration behind me doing it!
I'm getting the hang of it. I might post a video of me playing this. Thanks for the tutorial 👍
Thanks for the video. Drums are cool. 😇
Definitely and thanks!
thanks - been trying to suss this for ages!
Thanks for you comments. I'm open to suggestions for more tunes if you can think of any?
Doing this for my jazz semester exam. Thanks !
Great job with the transcription!
Thank you!
make a tutorial of the ending part
Good joke
Thank the seven Gods for this video. Getting ready to tackle Caravan!!! 🥁😥
Awesome video!! Thanks so much!!
Thank you Eli
Hi Richard. Torin here, amazing all the feedback you've got to this. Hope you've been doing well as I imagine the Academy was impacted by the pandemic. I hope to be down again soon for a lesson. I seen you were asking others for some scores, just a request from me as I usually found this one difficult when playing in my University function bands; Peg - Steely Dan. A tutorial on that would be great. All the best Richard.
we have the same name that's mad g
This is such a great tutorial. Well done Sir
For real he didn't even say anything he just played it
one word: CLEAN
Many thanks! Let me know if there are any other tracks that could help.
2:49 nice!
Great video!
Brilliant thanks Buddy!
Pleasure. Thanks for the comment!
By the way I don't think the movie version is just quarter notes on the ride. There are two very light unaccented eighth notes on the "and" of 2 and 4. If you listen with headphones you'll hear them. He is playing them louder here so everyone can see what's going on. When this guy does his Moeller technique version at the end, it has more the feel of the movie.
That's right. Those 8ths just bring themselves in as long as you don't lock up and keep a bit of a Moellar wave going...if you see what I mean. Thanks for the comment
Thanks very much !!!!!!! I love it !!!!!!!!!
Thanks for you comment. Any other tracks that could help?
Well done, what drum set are you using, it sounds amazing.
slight correction, the ride cymbal is just 8th notes that alternate between ride bell and shoulder
Very niceeeee 😍
Grandissimooo! Grazie mille
Thank you!
I definitely recommend learning to Play Salsa, before learning this groove 😅
I‘m really happy to be able to Play salsa, it really help to get this groove...
I couldn't agree more. Salsa helps your playing in so many ways and it sounds and feels great too.
Thank you!
Parabéns pelo trabalho amigo sucesso! Brasil!
Thank you good sir
Not quite my tempo. (because mine is 50bpm :D) Thanks a lot for the video!

Daumn nice, thanks
Thank you!
Wow! Perfect to practice speed! It would be great if you make a complete song tutorial! Sub!
thankss
Top.
Thanks WAHOOO
Can you show how to play it a little slower and a different camera angle so I can see what notes your playing
You need to upload more videos. i need to learm more jazz. Saludos desde Argentina.
Okay, give me some tine ideas and I'll give it a go. Thanks for the comment
Hi, Thanks for uploading video and PDF file.!
It help me good!
But I just wonder why there is no 'Hi Hat pedal' on PDF?
Is this correct drum sheet?
Thanks. I left the pedal hihat as optional, mainly because I didn't want the score to become to congested!
Can you do the Jazz traditional handle i know you can do it 😉.
Thanks...
Thanks for the comment
I have the main groove down but adding in the fills is a little bit of a challenge. Any advice?
NOT QUITE MY TEMPO! CONOLY GET YOUR ASS BACK ON THE KIT!!!
It’s in cut so it’s really double your tempos unless u do half note =bpm
You're right. I decided to score it in 4 as so often I find people prefer that way. I made the mistake of recording the finished play through just a tad slower that It should have been. It's only marginal, but it makes a difference. Thanks
How do you do those snares hits & rolls? Is that a specific rudiment i cant seem to get those little ghost note hits between snare hit
I found practicing paradidles but purposely over accenting 1 and playing e & a VERY softly for four bars, then beat 2, so on, helped but I'm not an expert. keep practicing, I believe in you :)
Do the practice on a pad. Start with just accenting the right whilst ghosting the left, nice a slow. You should have 2 distinct stick heights as well as volumes. There's no Moellar here it's gladstone strokes with the accents rebounding to the same height and the ghost doing the same from very low. Then switch it round. It's really important that you don't twitch the ghosted stick up in the opposite direction before it plays. It needs to go from a low position straight back to a low position...no wind up first. It's impossible to get a ghost not if you wind the stick up first, everything just ends up the same volume. The Moellar comes in when you start to swap the accents from hand to hand. All the best and thanks
very nice, i like it, is there also a transcription of the wiplash?
Unfortunately, I haven't done that. Have you found anything online? Thanks for the comment
i can do everything except the left foot high hat mirroring with the right hand aaaaaah it completely sends me on a rhythmic trainwreck
I think, when learning the Whiplash rendition of Caravan, it's all about the drums rather than the cymbal. Learning their placement in the song is more key, since the cymbals, in particular the ride, is a very basic set of measures to play.
Thanks for the comment. All the best
@@thedrumacademy 2 years ago I commented that.
I hope it didn't come of as patronising.
Thank you for replying all these years later.
Not gonna lie the slowed version is kinda chill lol
Love the cover good sir!
Oh and uhh.. can you resend me that from gmail? The drum score it seems my country doesnt let me in to mediafire..

Is he playing quarter, eights notes or a swing on ride? Please somebody tell me
Thanks. It's quarter notes, but I'm catching the 8ths as upstrokes. It doesn't matter though, do whatever feels best for you.
Hi! do you have the full score? can you please, please?
Thanks for your comments. I didn't do the full score. I get a bit bored doing that, but if there is any particular part you need help with, just let me know where in the piece and I'll have a listen.
is there another tutorial for caravan on youtube?
unfortunately not
i know he looks dead inside which makes you want to close the vid
I don't know, I haven't looked. I scored this out after being asked by one of my private students who had just seen the film.
Im getting the hang of the main beat. Its just those toms and the last fill that is annoying me. Great tutorial 👌
Not quite my tempo but good shit
Hello, where I can get the Sheet of Wiplash?
I don't know. There should be something by now online. Let me know if there is any particular section that's a problem for you and I'll have a listen. Also, any other tracks that I might help. All the best
I was looking for the metallica song... Not sure this is quite it...
This like to dislike ratio is great

how is this rythm called?
Please break it down
I can play everything except that swing on the ride. I’m having a lot of trouble with the limb independence there. I keep playing 8th notes instead :/ any tips?
practice other swings first and get comfortable with them
im pretty sure the cymbal strokes arent matching with the original beat. i think there is something wrong on the cymbal strokes
how many kicks do u need?
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, it chooses to do the most awkward combination at the end. I would have gone for the easier 2 snares to 1 kick!
Wheres the rest of this music???
I don't really have the patience to do the whole thing, but will help you with any particular fills, or bars if that's useful? All the best
i want to kiss u soo bad rn iv wanted sheet music for this for soooo long cant wait to get stuck into it sucha =great peice i appreceiate it again genuily even if it isnt ur or is idk
