  • Here is Sonny James singing on the Ozark Jubilee television show on December 6, 1956, one month before it became a number one hit.. He cut the song on October 30, 1956. It first reached the Billboard chart on January 5, 1957. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at No. 1; on the Country & Western Best Seller chart, also at No. 1; on the Juke Box chart, at No. 4; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached No. 2. On Billboard's country music charts, it was a No. 1 hit for nine weeks, and remained the longest-reigning of James's 23 chart-topping songs on the chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 8 song of the year for 1957.

The introduction is a little long by the announcer, but the song brings back memories of a girl that I fell for back in 1966, but lost to another guy while I was serving in the US Army. Bittersweet memories, but a great love ballad sung perfectly live by Sonny James

I remember that popular song when I was a teenager and we had Sunny James and Tab Hunter fighting for the top spot on charts. My Billboard chart lists James first hiting the charts 19 dec 56 went to No2 for 21 weeks and Hunter hiting charts 2 Jan 57 going to No.1 for 21 weeks also. Guess Tab Hunter would be the winner, but then you haveJames reaching No.1 on C&W and No.4 on Juke Box. Would be interesting to know how Hunter did rank on those 2 other charts, but I have a feeling Sunny James did better.

An illusion of Amarillo. Two million copies sold overnight. Took my old man nearly an hour to pay 4 a 45. Though he played fiddle, he could not relate psychologically. I've often wondered about Bob Dylan's father's psychological profile. Or whether Dylan's paps ever played an instrument? As I recall Mr. Dylan never revealed much in his book Chronicles Volume One. Great Story
