I always use your videos when I'm tinkering with chainsets. Came to youtube in search of this question and you have a video explaining perfectly. Thanks from Lancashire.
Thanks Sir. Very helpful for me this video. Since I would like to plan saving cost upgrade 11-32t without changing my ss rd. This soft my worrying. Appreciated for sharing this issue for us.
So to get this straight in my head. You can have a 50-34 compact with an 11-28 r7000 and all you have to do is swap to the 11-32 and only adjust the b screw. No new chain and I can keep my rd5800 short cage.
i have a 9100 rear mech with a semi compact on front and for some reason when I cross chain big/big my chain jumps in an angle and if I pedal backwards eventually pops off, it happens with 11-28 and 11-32 casettes, any idea of what it could be please?
good video ..Im looking to do the same thing to my bike ( Trek Alpha 2.1) , ill need a new derailer anyway as mine is well used and a new chain as its suggested . Would it be wise to go to a med derailer instead of the short since i have to change it out anyway ? thx
Yes, 32T will work fine as long as you use a 50T or 52T chainring. Just turn the B-screw a bit as described here. You do not have to adjust chain length. Ride on!
It is possible! But the derailleurs are actually different in that the part of the body next to the guide pulley is slightly longer on a GS derailleur! You can notice it with two derailleurs side by side.
Hi there! Thanks for the video, really helpful! Right now I have an Ultegra R8000 (short cage) with 11-25 and a 52-36 in front. I would like to put a 11-32. Since the change is 'big', should I install a longer chain? Thanks in advance!
I work on bikes. Long answer is, it depends how your chain was sized. The problem with a chain that's too short I discovered is that you won't be able to use the full range rear cassette sprockets while on the big chain ring because the spring "maxes out on tension", so arm that holds the jockey wheels won't be able to make the shift cause the chains too short to handle the amount of tension. Short Answer: Just swap the cassette out, and you'll know your chains' too short if you can't move to the final larger rear sprockets when it gets jammed.
8 months late, but the answer is - 105 R7000 SS is 30T, but you might get away with 32T! GS upto 34T. My Giant Contend came with 11-34, but I hated the wide spaced gearing and hardly needed the 34T for climbing. I went to 11-32T and everything was better. More ratios where I need them, and less big jumps.
Whenever I have a question, there you are with the answer! Many thanks, always very informative👍

Thank you Very Much! It helps a lot to resolve my pain when you can't say if new big cassette will work or not.
👍👍 excellent conversation and explanation, very interesting, will try a 11-32 upgrade for next sommer in the mountains

That is a super clean drivetrain.

Did you try it @chadruttan5304 ?
Why did you go 11-32, better hill climbing ability? What are your crank length and any input on 105 DI2, or is it better to go Ultegra? Great vids! 👍
gap for b screw with a 11-32 with 50-34

How many links did you remove pls?

Yes a medium cage would be optimal.
Great advice as always,l have the old 105 10 speed on my trek ,5700 l think currently with a 28 does it work on the old 5700 also?
Cheers.

@@c.initiative2705 Nice one!
I have 48-32 chainrings, could I use an 11-34 sprocket on a short 105 shift leg?
Is it possible to just change the cage in case a longer one is requires to work with a bigger cassette?

new 8050 derailleurs support up to 30T so i think 32 t will be no problem.
how about 11,30 cassete ,is it compatible ?

Did you change the chain or is it the original from the 11/28
Original chain!
I have a R7000 105 I have a 11-30 on my bike but I want to use a 11-32t would this mean changing the B screw. I have 50/34 chainrings
Great video! What about a 11-34 cassete? Will it work with the same 5800 short cage or i need to change to a R7000 gs rear derailleur? Thanks
You would need the R7000 gs derailleur!
@@FreeToCycle Thanks for the fast reply!
This i’d like to do on my CAAD12 many thanks :) would this work OK with C7000 or R8000 cassette ?
Yes the cassette used in the video is an R7000!
Do you think I could get away using a 11-34 cassette on a similar setup (50/34) or would it be best to get a GS derailleur?

I have a trek 10 speed 1.7(2009), its running 11-28t rear and 50-34t front, could l pop an 11-32 or even 34t cassette on?
I just bought a r7000 ss, and planning on running this with a 11/30 and 50/34…hopefully no problems but if anybody has any feedback let me know pls
