I bought a JAKL for evaluation as a defensive rifle. The AR has been around for over 60 years, has been in continuous combat use for almost the entire time (somewhere), and has seen near-continuous development and upgrades over that time. The JAKL is new to the market. For a *new* shooter, I would recommend an AR for those reasons. For someone who can evaluate the JAKL for what it is, and is capable of making decisions about their rifle with that evaluation in mind, the JAKL is a nice change of pace. I have never liked the location of the charging handle on an AR, but that’s what was available, it’s what they issued me, so that’s what I used. For my personal use, I’ve always wanted a side charger and a folding stock, and while there are several folders for ARs, they….complicate…matters. The folder on the JAKL does not. The side charger on the JAKL is in a good place. My only real complaint with the JAKL is that when locking the bolt open, it’s a stretch for me to hold the charging handle and press the bolt catch with one hand. I do enjoy shooting it, and it has given me zero malfunctions in about 300 rounds.
I have a Jakl as well (with a Midwest industries stock). It is more reliable than my ARs in the real cold weather we got this winter in Alaska. The machining could use some work but it’s also in its first iteration so I’m impressed on how flushed out it is already. I bet by gen 3 it will be something people will wholeheartedly trust for self defense and end of world stuff.
Can't wait to see the practical accuracy video. I briefly had a JAKL, but I decided I want to see what the second generation/iteration begets. Lighter front end, less fasteners (or eliminate), and a slightly stiffer bolt system for a more manageable field strip.
I definitely want to get a Jakl too. However, waiting on a Gen2....I too would like to see PSA work out the weight issue and other issues too. Starting think PSA isn't going to bring a Gen2 for a long time. Nevertheless, I'll just get the new Bren3. Which will be in USA definitely by Xmas time.
I have to wonder if it really was just a bad batch of uppers that went out, which is definitely not ok from a consumer standpoint, but atleast PSA as a company will take care of you if you just ask nicely. I own a JAKL. Optics mount just fine, perfectly securely to my rifle. I even have a pair of HK drum sights mounted to mine, and they are also very secure! I'm no RUclipsr, or Firearms influencer. I'm just a guy being a dude in sunny South Carolina. The rifle has functioned great for me, and it's something I've grown to like shooting more than my ARs. I've had no malfunctions with the firearm. I've had no malfunctions with ANY of my PSA rifles, and that's ranging from multiple AR Lowers, to several calibers and uppers. Even my AR-10 runs flawlessly.
Addressing the stock, why the hell doesn't Magpul just make a picatinny compatible ACR stock themselves. It would obviously sell very well since a whole cottage industry of ACR stock clones has been established.
I'm assuming the same reason they don't make any version of the ACR stock anymore: The molds for them wore out and they'd be too costly to replace for a relatively niche product that already has several competitors and reproductions.
I don't buy that though, for a company as big as Magpul and with them releasing a new AR stock all the time. On top of the fact more and more guns are shipping with a pic rail rear there is no way it wouldn't be worth the investment and yeah there are clones but I guarantee if Magpul made it again most people wouldn't even think twice about buying it over the clones.
Honestly, they are better off not touching it (Bushmaster still has the patent I think) and just have customers install folding tube adapters with DT or SL installed. Honestly, the DT is the best stock Magpul has made, and before that the SL and CTR were really damn hard to beat.
Thank you for being upfront about PSA supplying you the rifle knowing full well you’re gonna do a review video, knowing that you have a fairly large audience who listen to your opinions. Having said that, I just saw a small RUclipsr who purchased his own .308 JAKL and got 4.5 MOA at 100 yards while using a sled. Reviews from known and popular RUclipsrs are more believable if they review products without the manufacturers knowing.
PSA gets a LOT of hate. I think they make fine stuff for the price point. First things I do to a new rifle are triggers, muzzle device, and usually gas block. During all of that you may find some things that need addressing. Not a huge deal for me. But I see why some people are annoyed.
Americans are spoiled.....look what happened to the truck industry.....it was meant for utility and now it's about luxury and gizmos and comfort and wood grain interior with 50 cup holders and a popcorn machine.
Ah man, the title is confusing. I though this was a Public Service Announcement regarding Jackals. Them pesky dingoes been roaming free for far too long!
I bought an original ACR for 1800 years ago. Crazy reliable and accurate. I love it! Plus it always gets cool points at the range when people want to check it out.
Great first impression video! I would agree a 1913 stock makes sense as a replacement for future videos, and I would suggest embracing the hybrid AK aspect of the Jakl and using the Midwest Industries Alpha AK 1913 stock. It would still allow folding, has variable length of pull and comb height, and is reportedly quite sturdy.
@@mr_trigga-timeweird, I’ve been dealing with PSA for years and never had any service issues. I’ve called Sig many more times than PSA which always could be labeled as bad service. I’ve never had to call Glock, lol.
I agree. I would really like to see this JAKL with IMI razorcore handle the practical accuracy course with a 1-8, 1-6, or 4x prism and everything else stock/factory. That ACR fake stock from F5 is TRASH. If I ever get an ACR-At-Home, that F5 stock is going in the closet as an oh-shit-need-backup and I'm buying a Folding buffer-tube adapter and Magpul DT stock with a riser.
I liked this comparison on the recoil impulse. I shot my JAKL for the first time yesterday and I thought the impulse felt so cool. Very satisfying weapon to shoot, and honestly there’s value in that lol.
PSA does great work, but you absolutely need to check everything and function test it at the range a few times before you rely on it. I had a castle nut come from the factory so loose that my AR shot once and broke, and I had to replace the recoil spring detent.
Thanks for taking the time to do this review and thank you PSA for giving us another alternative to the overpriced FN SCAR...Joining the CZ Bren 2, Robinson XCR L&M. Can't wait to add one to the collection. Looks killer in FDE too!
50 years from now, Stoner's base design will still reign supreme. Advancements in manufacturing technology, material science, and cartridge design are the only things that can create a superior rifle (in my opinion).
@@DominicZelenak What about a good AK isn't quality? The biggest problem with the AK is that the biggest producer hasn't iterated on the design. In terms of reliability and manufacturing, a Russian AK is still a damn good rifle.
@@DriveCarToBar I don't disagree. there's millions quality AKs on the market. Badger was measuring supremacy by numbers and I corrected him. Its my opinion that an AR is a superior combat rifle, especially for an American. You can believe otherwise; that's fine. Its been debated to death and its a cliché at this point.
Ive got a mk2. No issues to speak of. I have the jmac, and a zhukov, each on a separate lower. One for armor. One for enjoying it. I recommend the zhukov over the f5. You get a known quantity from Magpul. And that quality is awesome for the price. John was justified in his frustration. As for some other things.. thr construction is stout, the accuracy is adequate. And i suspect that once the .308 comes out, they'll probably make considerably more units without issues.
I have a Jakl as a range toy and it's a fun gun to have and shoot. So far only about 400 rounds through it but no issues. It is front heavy and the recoil (into the shoulder) is light but the mass coming back with the long stroke system gives it some sight movement that you need to really lock down or the front of the gun will wander. The stock looks great but it's not the best practically. In addition to what you point out I tend to put my cheek back toward the butt pad and my cheek ends up in the gap. My $5000 custom Sig LT shoots really, really nice but I can't compare the two rifles. It's a decent rifle and I wouldn't discourage anyone from getting it as long as they take your points into consideration.
I like mine. Probably a 30 round mag gets you through whatever you need to as a civilian defender. We always compare to military rifles but is it really fair when PSA has never pursued a U.S. military rifle contract. We’re super lucky to have PSA offerings. Can’t imagine where they will be in a decade.
This was a great, nonbiased review, in my opinion... Most other videos that critique this rifle and company, you can sense the underlying negative feelings for PSA...
bolt rifles put them to shame. it's down to quality of construction, and the design. bolt guns have design that is easy to attain repeatability. but a weel made firearm will perform well in general.
@@9HoleReviews Not to my knowledge. If you want an extended rail on your SCAR you need to get one that mounts to your bottom screws as the bottom screws do not interfere with your barrel. I think the Parker Mountain Machine one mounts using your rail's bottom screws.
@@9HoleReviews I personally do not trust anything that makes your SCAR's screws hold down what is essentially a diving board. However, I have not heard of any wandering zero issues caused by the PMM MRE as that is mainly held in place by the bottom rail screw. Simply not using any extended rail may be the solution to your problems. If you simply must have an extended rail, the PMM or another model that mounts via the bottom rail may be a safe choice.
Long stroke gas piston makes it more like the DR200 I no longer have at home, like the dumb guy I am. Woos are great rifles. I am only at 6:40, so I am holding out for good news at the end. Hahahahaha! Here comes the Woo at 7:40. Nice!
..."Its comes down to if quality control is controlled in-house, or by the end user." This why I like PSA. Give me a blue print that works, and with my own knowledge and research, I can build a decent, yet affordable firearm that didn't break the bank!! Henry is on it!!
a long stroke gun that a common trucker like me can afford is pretty cool. I really like the thing so far from the video, also im glad to see the non sbr version being reviewed
For as long as PMS has been around, and for the broad variety of products they produce, they have been real impressive of late with the quality for the price compared to some very large and very old manufacturers. It's really something IMO.
Small point on the extruded aluminum being cheaper than forging: while technically true the AR-15 receives a massive advantage from economies of scale and being older. Meaning most of the places that make receivers have long since recouped their start up costs. I'm sure there's still plenty of premium markup from the big names, but I'd wager it's a lot less than most people think it is. Also, there's a rather large amount of diminishing returns/exponential costs involved in moving up in tolerances and precision. PSA targeting the civilian market and not chasing military contracts means they can have more "slop" and a higher reject/RMA rate than military suppliers. Not to say PSA is bad. For the civilian market, I think PSA is a pretty good bang for your buck these days.
PSA quality has become very competitive with popular and premium manufacturers. They also support 2a and have paid lawyers to file briefs in the frames and receivers case, even though they fo not currently manufacture 80 %’ers.
Henry, at 19:12 is that brass going back into the ejection port? at 19:10 Josh fires an aluminum magazine through the Jackl and at 19:16 there is a jump cut to another clip of Josh inserting a magpul magazine a new magazine into the Jackl. This cut is done in a way that looks eerily like you edited it to look seamless. During the first clip, you can see what looks like a brass casing bounce back into the ejection port but doesn’t show the magazine being removed. The second clip only shows the Magpul magazine being inserted. Curious if this was done to save time but it really looks like a covered up malfunction on the Jackl’s part. Given this review of the JACKL is mostly positive without explaining much of its short comings, do you have that clip in its entirety? I know this is a crazy over analysis of this small sliver of the video but for my own sanity I want to know if this was indeed the brass going back into the ejection port and if so why not include it into the video? Likewise, the clip continues and you state you like the ejection pattern but to me, that ejection pattern seems weak and potentially another issue of the JACKL. If you actually read this, thanks and wow.
Hey man, so when we were shooting it we really didn't notice it, I think it was probably because after the bolt locked back, we dropped the mag and slapped a PMAG in. I didn't notice it till another viewer pointed it out and we'll see if we can duplicate it. I realize it looks like a cover-up, but if it were, we wouldn't have showed the actual issue... which we have no reason to cover up as well. That said yeah we'll see if we can duplicate it
@9HoleReviews I was thinking it was just funny luck with gravity, was wondering if it cycled and got knocked out or if the case just dropped out when you removed the mag or if there was an actual malfunction
one thing to always take into consideration with comments sections and PSA... they are one of the few Direct to consumer firearms companys and by far the largest. anyone who works in Gunstores are the industry does not want to promote in anyway PSA due to there is no way for them to get there beak wet. they would way rather sell you a radical, diamondback are in house cheap gun than to a background check and maybe make $20 on your entering there stores to pick up a gun that was mailed to them. i have budddys who work at gun stores and they hate PSA because it is a gun sell they dont make everyday and people coming into store to pick up there gun then other customers see the PSA product and everyone shops online nowdays ... i think thats why there is a overwhelming amount of negativity towards PSA just on youtube comments section
Joe, you nailed it. I would also add gun stores want you to buy their overpriced accessories with your new purchase too. Probably they make more on those sales then the gun.
Great Content: I am a huge fane of the PSA JAKL however I do not own or have I shot one I would prefer to wait on hopefully a 2nd gen. as to where PSA would hopefully address & correct all the issues consumers ad influencers have mentioned.
yall gotta check out the cmmg br4 just got one and love it. they shoot flat low recoil. Crazy accurate!! have had a chance to run with it yet but don't they'll be any problems as smooth at it runs.
@@Vdubb And apparently it did beat the SCAR in the trials a long time ago. Then some higher ups made some excuses to not buy XCR rifles and buy the SCAR instead.
My only issue with the PSA JAKL. Is because of the "acceptable" price point made by the manufacturers. But I ultimately blame the Bushmaster for pricing their flagship ACR like it is made out of solid gold bricks same with FN with their SCARs. If the JAKL had been $800, then it will be much more enticing than the current AR-15s ($400-$600) and AR-10s ($1,200). But if it was like where it is $1,200 (or 1.3k in the pinned comment) I would pick AR-10 then AR-15 (1.2k) over the JAKL for having more for what your money's worth. And no, I doubt it is competing against the SCAR. It is competing against both SCAR and Bushmaster ACR (if they are coming back). Which I only see the JAKL being a clone of the Bushmaster ACR and not the SCAR. I don't care if people love to spend much more on them or even spent $10K on Hi-Points. It's only a 5.56/.223 semi auto rifle. And I hate it when people treat semi auto rifles like a luxury when they're actually not. Machine guns ARE luxury firearms because of the Hughes Amendment. And I do feel like semi auto rifles are becoming the next Machine guns, same with pistols down the line. Which it is the only reason why I don't like the bare minimum going up in price when the economy doesn't do the same. Sorry for my long angry rant about this. I just hate it when decent rifles become overpriced and nitpicked into something that will bite them in the ass down the years....And no this isn't a "poor man's" angry rant. I just feel my intelligence being insulted by some company's choices which it will change the firearms industry in a drastic way for the worse.
TL;DR version of my comment: The Jakl is actually competing against many rifles in the market that can easily outperform it for its price point. And I do like the looks but not the price point they are asking for. Even if I do have the money to throw at.
Love my K2 and MAX-1. Wish I hadn't parted with the other few Daewoo I had in the collection. The JAKL is interesting, but Im not sold on it. My 18" race gun does everything fine as long as the barrel doesn't get too warm. Though I have probably 6 folders, it's not really a critical design feature for me. I like piston guns; still not critical in my humble opinion
Great video! Would love to see you guys do one on one of the B&T APC rifles! I have one and love it but there’s not a lot of content out on it which is sad.
Complains that the stock is flimsy/flexible while everyone running braces says "My brace is equal to your stock". PERSPECTIVE........... In all fairness, I would take this flexible stock over any brace.
I'm trying to follow along with what you mean here.....so, 'complaining' (ie, pointing out that this stock is not good - at least, the one that shipped with ours isn't) isn't okay because some people are choosing to run setups with braces? I'm not really following the logic. One of the most important components as it relates to recoil control is a sturdy well designed stock...so...it's obviously something we'd want to discuss.
@@9HoleReviews true, but in today’s market where the majority of folks say pistol braces are = to stocks, that flex is negligible in this market. Personally I would take that all day over a brace. Folks that like braces would think that amount of flex is perfectly fine. Depends on your perspective. Hopefully that clears things up.
@@9HoleReviews In summation, since the introduction of the brace the importance of a rigid stock isn’t an important attribute anymore. It was great chatting with you guys, your channel is awesome…. Thanks for the excellent content.
@@mr_trigga-time Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, we just completely disagree with that conclusion. Just because braces exist and people choose them for legal simplicity, knowing full-well that they are flimsy, etc. , it doesn't mean that companies selling stocks should be held to a lower standard. The stock is an integral part of the product and you can absolutely feel that this one is a limiting factor in the ability to control the recoil on this setup. I'd go as far as saying that I've shot with braces that are more rigid than this setup.
ahhh tbh i just saw that, I'm assuming that when we pulled the mag out the cartridge went with it and we didn't even notice? We just saw it in another comment, and will try to duplicate it to see why that happens. If we were trying to edit it out, it wouldn't' be in there for you to see, but we don't do that.
It would be interesting to see one of the stocks break, it could simply be quite flexible but either way it's not ideal. I remember that was actually one of the things that was holding the M16 back. They wanted to be able to hit people with it and realized it just wasn't a great idea with the buffer tube
The JAKL looks even better than the ACR imo. If they lighten it up just a tad with a Gen2 version or whatever and fix some of the other bugs, it would be a dream. Btw I love how you actually talk about how the recoil feels etc, most other guntubers just describe the specs on their rifles or compare groups.

I just want to know where you got a set of HK drum sights lol
Maybe a dumb question but, what do you mean by Picatinny compatible? I hear picatinny and I’m only thinking the hand guard.
@@goodbonezz1289They stick a rail on the back of the receiver and you can attach certain Stocks that way.

I bought an original ACR for 1800 years ago. Crazy reliable and accurate. I love it! Plus it always gets cool points at the range when people want to check it out.
Jakls are such good looking guns. Good review
Never thought about it like that, but yeah, i reckon it really is more of a space aged daewoo k2.
We like a good discussion on the finer points of long and short strokes. This was a nice watch considering the JAKL is on my short list to get.

When is the practical accuracy video? PLEASE 🙏
Accuracy please
I liked this comparison on the recoil impulse. I shot my JAKL for the first time yesterday and I thought the impulse felt so cool. Very satisfying weapon to shoot, and honestly there’s value in that lol.
PSA does great work, but you absolutely need to check everything and function test it at the range a few times before you rely on it.
I had a castle nut come from the factory so loose that my AR shot once and broke, and I had to replace the recoil spring detent.
Great episode. Great comparisons, and it look like you boys had a lot of fun. 😊

50 years from now, Stoner's base design will still reign supreme. Advancements in manufacturing technology, material science, and cartridge design are the only things that can create a superior rifle (in my opinion).
Reign supreme? Not in pure numbers terms. 8-10x as many AKs out there as ARs. Not that this IS an AR-15.
@@skepticalbadger quantity does not equal quality.
@@DominicZelenak What about a good AK isn't quality? The biggest problem with the AK is that the biggest producer hasn't iterated on the design. In terms of reliability and manufacturing, a Russian AK is still a damn good rifle.
@@DriveCarToBarMaybe in the stone age before optics. The AR design is a decade newer and that really did show when the US gave everyone a scope.
I got my Jakl with a JMAC triangle folder and its SOLID as hell.
It's a decent rifle and I wouldn't discourage anyone from getting it as long as they take your points into consideration.
yeah we really agree with your assessment that it's hard to compare the two rifles. Simply put they're made for very different markets
Probably noon existent because people won't be able to afford their low quality firearms anymore.
This was a great, nonbiased review, in my opinion... Most other videos that critique this rifle and company, you can sense the underlying negative feelings for PSA...

I love that everyone's actually admitting that AR's are the most accurate.
bolt rifles put them to shame. it's down to quality of construction, and the design. bolt guns have design that is easy to attain repeatability. but a weel made firearm will perform well in general.
For gas guns, AR15s beat out every other gun. They have very little weight on the barrel and that weight doesnt shift during firing.
@@sinisterthoughts2896 bolts guns dont do much in a firefight, though.
The SCAR's screws walking out is a known issue caused by KDG stendo rails.
was there ever a published fix?
@@9HoleReviews Not to my knowledge. If you want an extended rail on your SCAR you need to get one that mounts to your bottom screws as the bottom screws do not interfere with your barrel. I think the Parker Mountain Machine one mounts using your rail's bottom screws.
that's unfortunate. but good that PMM works? does it?
@@9HoleReviews I personally do not trust anything that makes your SCAR's screws hold down what is essentially a diving board. However, I have not heard of any wandering zero issues caused by the PMM MRE as that is mainly held in place by the bottom rail screw. Simply not using any extended rail may be the solution to your problems. If you simply must have an extended rail, the PMM or another model that mounts via the bottom rail may be a safe choice.

You guys should do a review on the PWS rifles.
PSA quality has become very competitive with popular and premium manufacturers. They also support 2a and have paid lawyers to file briefs in the frames and receivers case, even though they fo not currently manufacture 80 %’ers.
Nice, I have ACR. I bought mine back in 2014
Henry, at 19:12 is that brass going back into the ejection port?
at 19:10 Josh fires an aluminum magazine through the Jackl and at 19:16 there is a jump cut to another clip of Josh inserting a magpul magazine a new magazine into the Jackl.

@@Vdubb I know but that sounds like a silly excuse nonetheless.
Would be killer if they had an FN barreled version. Keeping an eye on how these work out long term.
