A viewer asked me to compare the PSA JAKL to the Brownells BRN-180. So, we take a look at both, compare them and I decide if I could only have one - which one would it be? - Развлечения
can everyone just stop asking Mac how to get involved in the firearms industry? please
Best comment. XD
Seriously
😄
Lmao. This comment is undefeated and undisputed
😂😂😂
The JAKL reminds me of the 1st gen MCX. Heavy and unrefined, with rolling changes being done as it came out. Which eventually turned into the light weight version of the MCX. If I was a betting man, I would wager that we’ll see a “light weight” JAKL come out in the foreseeable future. They just gotta figure out what parts do and don’t need to be overbuilt.
Nothing on any PSA gun is overbuilt. It's heavy but not overbuilt. It's just sloppy.
And before Sig did its beta testing on the gen 1 mcx and the verstus, they did the same damn thing with the sig556. Put an A1 profile barrel on it, lost the fish gills and quadrants and you got a lighter, better but less modular gun. And then quit supporting it Ala the mcx, and vertus.
I have a JAKL I've put some rounds through, and I think the biggest single thing they can shave weight on is the handguard. Idk if the longer railed variants are thinner, but on my 10.5" the handguard is DUMMY thick. I imagine they could shave some weight off of it since it's monolithic, but I'm no engineer lol.
Would also like to see them move to a different barrel profile and something more standardized with the AR pattern for the barrel fitting, but that might not be possible without an expensive redesign.
After owning one that is 100 percent false. The monolithic upper and rail and barrel are too thick or over built. If they made the mono lithic upper half the thickness and the rail the same they could shave some weight. But for now its built like a tank. I found that with the right forgrip the weight is not longer an issue.@@armorers_wrench
same observation i got the monolithic upper and rail could be half the thickness they are now.@@DunkThemMuffins
Another great highly informed comparison video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
@@Militaryarmschannel DAEWOO K2 has entered the chat. What's old is new yet again. Warranted comparison video forthcoming.
I'm holding off on buying a Jakl until the kinks are all worked out and it reaches its final Super-Saiyan form, I'm also excited about the 308 version. What brings me to side with the Jakl is the swappable charging handle, the AK-like gas system, and knowing that PSA will continue to upgrade and support the system, unlike my ACR.
All very valid points!
Agreed, in a year or three when they're done iterating on it, the JAKL will be a fine rifle. But I don't think I'll be purchasing one even then. Replacing perfectly good, functioning and kitted out PSA guns that I own with a JAKL just doesn't make sense. If it was modular enough to run the three calibers I care about(5.56, 300BLK, and 308) off one highly durable chassis that'd be one thing. One lower and two or three uppers would be an interesting thing. But I don't think that's how it works. So unless I have a really tragic boating accident, I'll pass.
BRN180 is neat, but in the same boat. I suppose this is only an issue for people who dearly want piston guns.
@@Arkancide The jakl isn't going to replace my kitted BCM or any other of my rifles. It will be just another rifle in my inventory. I just like the AK-like operating system, especially in 308, and future PSA support.
@@grunt1807 I see. It may be because I'm a poor, but that thought never crossed my mind... Having an 'inventory' of rifles is beyond my imagination. Well, good on ya, and I hope you enjoy them!
@@Arkancide Honestly I'm with you on this one......might also be because I'm a poor but who knows. Once the 308 version comes out it would be great to only need two lowers to use and three uppers. Plus, and I know its just wishful thinking, but maybe we could even see PSA come out with a 12 gauge upper for the 308 lower.
I’ve picked up a BRN180 and have been very happy with it. I’ve told myself I’ll hold off on a JAKL upper until a pencil-barrel version or updated gen-II version is released - will likely just grab the 13.9 P&W upper and throw it onto one of my spare sat-night-special Anderson lowers.
I'm sure you already know this, but there's a part or two you need to swap out on your lower if you want to slap the JAKL upper onto an AR lower. I believe it's the ping pong paddle you need to swap, but it's been too long since I did mine lol.
Puppy hearing protection has gotta be the best thing I’ve ever heard of
There are some good companies out there offering it. This set is made by Rex Specs.
@@MilitaryarmschannelI wouldn’t complain if we got more footage of your pup.
I was wondering if such a thing existed for cats and dogs. That's cool.
Flat out appreciate seeing that, so many people just obliterating their poor pet's hearing.
Mac, you do have a great dog! He doesn't mind wearing ear pro at all! Glad you take good care of him or her!!
I bought the 14.5 jakl and I really have been enjoying it
I enjoy mine too. It wasn't an easy choice for me.
I noticed Brownells is now selling both a folding charging handle and a non-reciprocating charging handle for the BRN-180. Midwest Industries is selling an AR-180 style folding stock that looks similar to the one Brownells used to sell.
I have the 180 and love it… I will say this , when I first got it the upper and lower, they wouldn’t fit together and both were sent back to pws …got back brand new upper and lower… so they have had issues… once I got them back it has been flawless
Haven’t even watched it yet. I love it. I’ve been waiting for this video for the last year and a half.
I would choose the puppy with the hearing protection. 🙂
I think I’m going to go with the jakl because I like the looks just a bit better. I like pws but PSA for me has been killing it lately and I haven’t had any issues. Can’t wait for the 308 jakl
PWS website is completely out of stock.
@@FXIIBeaver Jakl's are restocked about once a week. Just keep checking the stock at 11:30-Noon Eastern Time until the version you want is in stock.
Retro vs acr
Jakl for me.
@@johnhenrybottom1992 jakl me off
I built a 300blk pistol using the Brownell's BRN180 upper. Easy, reliable and fun to shoot suppressed or not. (Yes, a little punchy)
I have been watching PSA for a while now. Saw your visit to their factory. I really like how they think! Saving up for a PSA purchase in the future.
Refreshing video.
Too bad the barrel LITERALLY SCREWS OUT. Garbage design
I sold my SCAR back to the gun shop & brought a psa jakl. 2 daggers 100 round drum & 250 rounds.
Well? Do you like it? is it reliable?
and how do the daggers fair when shooting akimbo?
@@Matthew-bc9mr what's akimbo

My favorite aspect of the PSA Jackl is that it is similar to the ACR rifle. A highly underrated rifle in my opinion.
Can't stop thinking about puppy hearing protection on different breeds of doggo
These are offered by Rex Specs.
Jakl, I support innovation, and PSA is faithful the civilian market.
Yea I always buy from PSA simply because of their loyalty to us.
I have had the Foxtrot Mike FM15 and since they updated the plastic butt plate the stock attaches to It's been spot on!!! They even supply the heavier spring to install when you shoot it suppressed. I'll wait for the later version of the JAKL. I'll have to look into that BRN300aac though!!!!!! thanks for the heads up on that.
I have a 10.5” 223 WYLDE BRN180 upper on a ADM ambi lower with a Geissele flat trigger, DD grip, triangle folder, Trijicon MRO, Surefire M600DF with Modbutton lite and an ASR 3 prong for the Saker 556 can. Great suppressor host and the smoothest racking rifle I’ve ever felt. Feels like the bolt is on ball bearings
I have a JAKL and love it. I will definitely get the 308 when it comes out.
BRN 180 is actually made by primary weapon systems. Who also makes a long stroke piston AR. It is fantastic
I own both guns. Had the Jakl for a while now and love it. Haven't got to shoot my Brn180 yet, just got the upper today and the lower is off being engraved. Thanks for this video.
I just picked up a BRN-180 upper, and I wasn't certain I want to keep it. Now I feel much better about it.
Of course PSA won't ship to my state, so that's not an option. Yet.
Thank you!
Your dog with the earmuffs on is adorable
Another upper that would be interesting to through in the mix, would be the Foxtrot Mike FM15 gen 2.
I love seeing innovation in the industry, and I wish all of these companies coming out with unique designs great success. But they (PSA, CMMG, Sig, Perun, etc.) really need to stop putting charging handles so far forward and so close to the top rail. Robinson Armament figured it out years ago, put the charging handle further back just above the magwell. This way it doesn't interfere with your grip when you go to C-clamp it, and also you don't scrape your knuckles on your optic when you charge it. Minor nit-picking I know, truly I do hope these companies do well and continue to improve on their new and interesting designs. Thanks for another fun video Tim!
The charging handle on the Jakl is non reciprocal and high enough it won’t bother you.
@@FXIIBeaverI have the 10.5 Jakl and if you put a PEQ or other LAM on the top rail, it will definitely impede your access to the charging handle. I really wish they had some sort of extra long folding charging handle that would clear LAMs when unfolded, but the length needed would expose it to carbon from the A2 birdcage.
@@DunkThemMuffins and if you run that exact setup on an AR you won’t have anywhere to grip. If you want hand room you bought the wrong upper.
@@FXIIBeaver You do know that the majority of LAMs have the fire button on top right? You just use your thumb to press the button from a C clamp grip if you need the laser. Never had a problem with hand room and a LAM on a standard 10.3 upper.
Gotta go with BRN 180. It's a proven system. Great video as always thanks!
Thank you for watching!
The ACR we didn't ask for but we needed.
Another awesome new video. While others flounder and can’t come up with new content… Tim delivers the good stuff.
BRN-4 over here. Or the URGI upper brownells had a $300 discount on.
The term "at home" is for the short bus and considering the original AR180, ACR and Current Scars were/are made in the USA it's extra short bus.
I appreciate that they sponsor you and other gun tubers. But Im not a big fan of the private gun schools advertising. Because there are some expert gun smiths like school of the modern rifle, or ex-military armors. But setting an expectation that they need to pay tens of thousands for schooling before they can put their skills into practice in the field seems setting up the same cycle of never ending debt as other industries.
My problem with these online gunsmithing programs is two-fold. First, they largely exist to siphon GI Bill and federal student loan money. I’ll guarantee most of their students are using one of those two payment methods. Second, and more important, gunsmithing is a skilled trade. And like with any skilled trade you REALLY should learn it in-person rather than mostly online. I don’t care what anyone says…learning isn’t equally effective with both approaches. There’s no substitute for having an instructor literally standing by you as you learn.
The last two gunsmiths I used were horrible. They seriously didn’t know what they were doing. Wanna guess what both had in common? They had “learned” gunsmithing from one of these online schools.
I’m afraid these schools are likely churning out people who really don’t have a full and well-developed skill set, in turn flooding the market with people who probably don’t have much business calling themselves “gunsmiths”.
There IS a demand for gunsmiths but finding one who actually knows what they’re doing is getting harder and harder.
@@fraudsniffer7280 Hand's on is the best way by far. Most of the people being churned out of these online classes should be considered Armor's, not gunsmiths.
Agreed. Honestly CST (and other schools) are set up to maximize profit and maximize GI Bill intake. They had absolutely turned CST into a cash cow. That being said, most of the instructors knew what they were doing and the real Rubicon is getting to work on actual customer guns enough times that you figure out what the hell's going on. The reality is, there are many types of guns you can specialize in and some of them you'll make money doing. You're not going to get rich repairing Grandpa's shotgun.
The other fact of life that comes with going to gunsmithing school, is that less than 10% of those students will actually become gunsmiths. Experienced dedication and hard work get you there like any other skilled technical job, and there is plenty of work to be done. Pick something you love doing and specialize in that. You do it long enough and you'll be an expert.
These youtubers should not be pushing something that will get their viewers into perpetual debt. They do it for money…they could take different sponsors that wont bankrupt Americans
@@1stidvet553 Bullshit. It's a personal responsibility and choice whether or not to take on a debt. No different than taking a loan for a car or any other loan. I have zero sympathy for anyone with "student debt". Being in "perpetual" debt is a choice, no one is forced into it.
The jakl stock looks awesome
It does but…if you like to have a long pull (extend the stock out) and rest your cheek near the back of the stock you will fall into that gap where there is no cheek well. When I shoot it I have to change up my shooting mechanics so my cheek can rest on the stock. It looks great but for me I don’t like it.
Love my BRN180, great carbine.
As a potential PSA JAKL buyer, thank you for your input. Learning the rolling changes are coming out for the rifle makes me want to wait for a "Mark 2" version once they work through all the feedback.
The Jackel 308 may bring 308 to the front of the pack in battlefield cartridges!! PSA learning the industry!!!!
They listen to what their customers want.

TL;DR: the BRN180 is a more refined product. The AR18 gas system has been used in a number of other guns and is well understood.
The JAKL is still a “work in progress”-which is fine, just understand that it’s a newer, not as well tested design, and PSA is still getting feedback from the field and incorporating that feedback into the design as the product evolves.
Built my BRN 180 just to be different & have the old style look, but runs like a champ.
Gen3 BRN is coming. And Baron, has hinted at a the potential for a BRN160 (Stoner designed an ar16 in .308)
Interesting.
@@DB-yj3qc indeed. Potentially more interesting than the .308 JAKL. The 5.56 JAKL is heavy. And the .308 looks like a storm boltor. So, hopefully a brn160 could be a lighter option. Would be even cooler as a G2 pattern upper though
Gen3? Linky?
They just did a video on the 308 jakl yesterday
I love the folding stock ar's. Bought the early release Sig MCX. Just recently picked up a Foxtrot Mike 12.5 pistol complete for $600. Added a folding brace, very lightweight and accurate little gun. Has run 100%.
Glad some of the issues with the Jakl were already addressed. However, PSA does need to use a different (lighter) profile barrel. Shaving off 8 oz would be great.
I plan of purchasing a Jakl, just waiting to see if PSA is going to address the weight issue. Something tells me, it will be a while...due to they're going to concentrate their efforts toward the .308 model.
I love your dog hearing protection!
Based MAC!!!
The Jakl in 300BO with the short barrel and a suppressor is absolute fire. Very impressed with it! I don't know why you would buy either of those in 5.56, just stick to a standard AR for that. The Jakl's charging handle is in the perfect spot, right by your nondominant hand for super fast manipulation. The AR and the BRN180 force you to break grip to operate. With the Jakl you can stay on target ready to pop off another round.
Nice review thanks
With the jakl, you also have to change your bolt catch. It was a toss up between the Jakl and brn but I went with the Jakl because they had a 14.5 pin and weld option.
PSA will release a bullpup lower for the Jackal. Which you will like for sure, hopefully it will address the front weight the barrel and gas block quite a bit.
Pick up a BRN 180 running it now For 2 years, I have no problem with it.Our may i say the only problem was.The stock came loose and I tighten it up with an allen Wrench been running it 2 years now. No problem Flawless no complaint.
Got the 5.56 and .300bo jakl uppers, love them so far. Probably will get the 7.62x39 brn180 upper since I prefer the AR style mags system over the rock n lock ak crap. Both are great, jakl is a little heavier but super smooth cycling and recoil impulse. The brn180 is lighter but choppier. I'm still playing around with muzzle devices too.
The 'dog leg' charge handle is a problem for some rail-mounted devices on BRN180's creating pinch-points. A3 Tactical makes several versions of the charge handle that offer ergonomic and anesthetic improvements.
Piston driven, with folding stocks and AR controls
The sky is blue, with birds and a sun
I have a couple of BRN-180'S with the BRN-180 'Modern' lowers. These were bought before the Jakl was released. Tried to get an FDE version, but they weren't available at the time. The Jakl is interesting and may wind up in the collection at some point.
Pencil barrels don't work on piston systems because of the disruption in barrel harmonics introduced by the piston. It can be done but then you'll repeat what happened to Sig with the first version of the MCX failing the military accuracy testing.
Looking at the BRN-180 is like looking into the past, it is so old-school and that is where it will stay. The JAKL is more modern and is still being improved, which I like! And since I am a huge fan of AR-10 rifles over the AR-15, I am excited about the JAKL in 308 coming out soon. I look at the JAKL as the future in rifle design at a great price point. And as with any new rifle design there are always bugs to work out. What I do find is that the problems they had with the AR-15 rifle when they first come out were not a problem with the AR-10 that came out first and work great from the get-go! Plus, PSA make quality rifles, and I have no doubt they are well on their way to bringing in another classic rifle.
There is a BRN-180 in 350 Legend, which might interest some hunters
of the 2 ...alrdy picked jakl and it was a great decision
Literally deciding between these two for my refund... Thank you MAC!
Besides it being slightly heavy once I fitted mine out, my Jakl is my favorite toy. Im going to slim it down soon. I got the 16” variant in FDE, PSA had a good deal on them a couple months ago for $1100.
I had originally looked at the BRN180 after passing up a chance to buy a Sterling AR180 back in earlt 90s. But I went with the Jackl as it afforded a 14.5 pin and welded. I always liked the 180 folding stock.
I would love to see the Jakl in 6.8SPC. That would be awesome
I have been asking for almost 2yrs
I prefer the Jakl over the BRN. Just preference. PSA has been very innovative lately, they just need to really ring in their quality control. I have two of their AR15s and i must say they run perfectly fine. But next to my DDM4 and my two Giesseles, when you put them together you can see and feel the difference in quality. But they do run very well
The Canadian legal gun vs what used to be a cheaper alternative to a Colt M16/603/SP1 AR-15 back in the day.
Shoe Horning the gas piston into a di ar15 setup is what a lot of Canadian 180 alternatives tried to do. Resulted in a bunch of bent and broken gas pistons.
Considering you were a fan of primary weapon systems, and also a fan of Robinson armament. I would very much like to see you compare the Robinson XCR with the new PWS UXR…. They seem very similar in concept. And very similar and design. Both of which feature quick change barrel and caliber system, and appear to come completely ambidextrous.
I’d probably go with the JAKL. Just seems a bit simpler of a design. One piece piston vs multi part. Handguard doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning. A lighter barrel would be cool like you said.
JAKL is made for going short and quiet. A light barrel does not make sense, or a barrel in the length reviewed.
@@KalashniKEV762 I don’t have any issues with a short suppressed gun having a pencil barrel. For my use, the trade offs are worth it.
I love my BRN-180. I’ve been teased by a reliable source that Gen 3 is on the way, some of the improvements were already incorporated into the .350 Legend version.
KNS also makes a picatinny buffer tube thread end-caps for AR15 lowers. Just make sure you buy the version with wings to cover the rear take-down detent spring…
BRN-180 for me.
With a few updates ,the rra pds would be a very good option . Give it a 1/8 twist barrel instead of 1/9, chf qpq nitrided, a few cartridge options and a few other options like barrel profile , brackets to use standard AR barrels ,ect. . It sadly never took off like it deserved too. It was made when rra was pioneering designs . They made the first Dedicated pistol caliber carbine lowers for Glock mags at about the same time they created their short stroke piston system carbine with non reciprocating forward charging handle , side folding stock, adjustable gas system and easily changed handguards for rails or no rails. Personally I think it's ascetics are really good too.
ive had both Ar-180B and a 1st Gen BRN-180 pistol and am going forward with BRN 300 blackout pistol
I'd pick the Jakl because it doesn't have that cutout in the upper receiver for the reciprocating charging handle. That cutout just makes it easier for debris to get into the internals and cause a malfunction
I just put together a BRN-180SP. Eventually will have a Jakl too! Why chose! Have them all!!
Awesome, I hope you do a similar video with the scar and 308 jakl when it’s released.
SCAR at 5 times the cost. I will always choose the JAKL.
A polymer lower and sleek blocky look upper of the AR-18 based platform sounds like success, and cute.
Jakl is pretty sweet . I want to get one
Love my JAKL. I looked at both and chose the JAKL because it looke more like a scar and because I like PSA. Can't wait for the .308 JAKL.
I wish you would've added a rock River PDS In the category... It's also very similar.
They are the price of the jakl and ar18 combined
I have the 180 and have had no complaints with it. The first rifle I truly wanted after I got out of the Marine Corps was the ACR, so if I had the money I’d buy the Jakl. I think in the long run the Jakl will be a better rifle.
I like the JAKL because of its American Kalashnikov-ness Just strikes me as happiness in a box.
I already have the jakl and a few ar's in different calibers. I love my jakl. The forend gets hot so I use a foregip. It's definitely front heavy. The model I have I believe is newer than the 1 you have in the video.
I've heard mixed things about MAC. The fact that hes one of, if not the only, channels i have come across so far that puts hearing protection on his dog.. tells me all i need to know about him.
Yay for the Shepherd ❤😍
Just looked at the Brownells website for BRN 180 and they have several caliber options... 223, 300blk, 762x39, 350 Legend. Yes, a 308 would be nice though
I like the Jakl on paper.. In practice, I'd go with the BRN 180 just on quality alone.
I've had a 10.5'' BRN 180s Gen2 in .223 wylde for over 2 years on an Anderson lower, it's been flawless and surprisingly accurate.
I still pick the AR15
You should really consider a BRN-180 upper fits right on your Mil-Spec lower
Basic
@@sarchlalaith8836also runs dirtier
@@vicdiaz5180It was designed to. But you think that's a problem lmao.
Nothing beats the AR15
Tim: 8:45 "Any AR upper will pin to the BRN180 lower" Maybe it will pin to it, but the AR upper as a traditional DI gun is incompatible! The solid rear cast lower with 'Pic rail' stock attachment will not accommodate the BCG and buffer system of an AR. You can however put a BRN180 upper on a milspec AR lower. Perhaps that's what you were thinking
personally I like them both bit if I could only have one I would choose the BRN-180. However I think a Gen 2 version, of the Jakl correcting the gen 1 issues, and adding more options. therefore yeah if a gen 2 Jakl were here, fixing the current issues with the gen 1 Jakl, I would definitely choose the Jakl over the Brn-180
I think a better comparison would be a Robinson Arms XCR versus the PSA jakl.
I own both. The XCR is way better. Having said that, the JAKL is 1000 dollars less. Personally, I love both of them!
BRN 180 all day! The Jakl is awesome but looks to front heavy like you said. I think PSA listens to its buyers opinions and will upgrade eventually.
I would pick the Jakl, because it keeps evolving, AND I want to trust and support PSA as the people's arms company going forward.
I was a jakl buyer until I found adams arms and now I have two of their p2 uppers and couldn’t be happier
Love the 180 and the smooth recoil. Was planning on getting a jakl with the pinned muzzle for my suppressor. Once i finally received my hux suppressor, I'm taken back a bit by the added weight. I also added a new optic. Everything is pretty heavy.
Knowing the jakl is heavier, even with a couple inches less barrel, has me paused on that decision.
I'm not totally someone who loves optics but the whole setup with a suppressor just feels like unnecessary weight.
The brn is really a quiet contender here. I'd love to see them expand and build upon that product. They need product developers with the aptitude of PSA but the engineering chops of Brownells contractor builders.
I was hoping you'd cover weight/ balance, accuracy and reliability
Thanks
I feel that's a fair comparison. I have not shot either so I can't argue with your results either. I do know that there's something about the 13.5 p&w Jakl in FDE that just looks GOOD!
i got the jakl, love it,
I'd def go with the Jakl. I've got my eyes on one currently and the support it has over the 180 is very soon, if not already, to overshadow it
Comper JAKL to Robinson Arms XCR
BRN-180 upper is the way to go unless you want to purchase another firearm and all that hassle. Brownell's has a lifetime guarantee.
Would def go with the JAKL. Very easy to mount to a ar lower. I see the new ones have different charging handle and gas nob. Always improving is a plus to me.
I bought a BRN-180 556 rifle upper when the only options were pistol or rifle length. because I wanted an AR that would function with the stock folded. It was on sale for $750 & I mated it with a PSA theme lower. I completed the lower with a Sylvan Arms folding stock adapter, minimalist stock, lower completion parts from my parts stock. Including FFL transfer fee, sales tax on the stripped lower & FFL transfer I have less than $200 in the lower. I probably will replace the muzzle device with one with ASR suppressor mount. My Silencer Central Banish 30 & Silencer Co Hybrid 46M and Omega 300 all have ASR mounts.
