- Georgia Tech sophomore and Mechanical Engineering major Nick Selby gave an absolutely incredible welcome at the 2013 Freshman Convocation that ignited McCamish Pavilion. This rousing speech lead to a standing ovation from the freshman class, and we're pretty sure it will get you out of your seat as well. Make sure you share this amazing video! GO JACKETS! No offense but I find this speech quite obnoxious.
His entire speech was about 6-7 minutes long. It's the last part that's getting him all of the attention. I took as it was surely intended to be; fun. Give the kid his 15 minutes of fame. He probably has gotten way too many wedgies during his life, and he seized his moment. I say good for him.
I love how Georgia Tech still posted this. This speech was for the students and by the student. And I like how the University did not try to cover the speech up. Props to the student!!!
I have watched this several times and still find it stirring. Imagine the guts it took to pull this off in front of the president, provost and all your professors as a Sophomore. The fact Nick pulled it off with so much confidence is impressive. I would have been a nervous mess!

What these Incoming Freshman also need is an old Alum to tell them don't worry that even well over 30 years after you graduate - you'll still have regular nightmares about the place, and don't be alarmed when you see your fellow students crying on campus during Finals Week. Finally, I would add - there is still time to transfer and have a normal college life!!

i cant believe the number of comments about asians, debt, and nerd. GT is consistently ranked as one of the best value schools in the country, the asian kids work their butts off are smart respectful and successful, and these nerds will hsve jobs when they graduate unlike many others. Oh and to the guy that said he didnt graduate your right hes only a sophomore.

I would be very surprised if he wasn't a wrestling fan, or used to be. This is stuff straight out of WWE. The music in the background, while used for many occasions, is used by former WWF/E wrestler Ric Flair. If he's not, what a huge coincidence.
The music in the background is Strauss - it was performed well before the inception of WWE and s most widely known from the opening scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I know. I know. Everyone knows that Ric Flair's song is a classic taken from Strauss. The only reason why I said I wouldn't be surprised if he was a wrestling fan was all the pageantry and the over the top style of his speech. The way he holds the microphone and whatnot. Stuff like that.
