I was mocking them when I was 19, now I am stunned by them in my 49. Electro funk at it weirdest. How come this weird kind of music was at charts is still mistery to me. Nick Beggs is a killer on bass. Wish this was covered by Grace Jones. Now I see how much talented they were. Amazing.
Would have been a top 3 hit if it hadn't been up against some really strong singles like Let's Dance, Beat It, Sweet Dreams, etc. Not as weird as Ghosts by Japan which was in the charts about a year earlier.
This song and the video are brilliantly ridiculous and a great homage to excess and celebrity culture in the 80’s!! One of my favourite guilty pleasures! I like it so much I once repeatedly played it for two hours non stop!
Along with The Human League, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, Eurythmics, Bananarama, Adam and the Ants, Tears for Fears, etc etc etc....
I've been pondering this video's meaning for many, many years. And I think it has mostly to do with egotism, and how wealth can contribute to that (check the lyrics). When it comes to Nick's 'shadow man,' I think--again--that's the ego. Shadow Man causes Nick to stumble, crash, and burn in every situation here. In so many instances in this video, egos and expectations of fame and wealth are dashed. In the end, all are LITERALLY reduced to rubble, in the metaphorical earthquake!
Ahh, thank you for explaining that. I was trying to figure it out the whole time. Decided to scroll thru comments to see if anyone had one about the meaning of the video. I think you're right. 😊
I've been baffled for almost 40 years over this video. Nick Beggs was/is deeply religious so there may be some religious angle to the iconology as there were in many of the later Kajagoogoo songs.
An surreal video as well , in a way it was good that this band was so shortlived , they burned at the brightest in that very moment , unlike some that just drag on.
I think this is prior to when he picked up the Chapman stick but i am not sure. This bassline could have been done with the stick. Synth arr. also cool even by todays computerized standards. Song? ...well.
@@mordaciousfilms same! the kajagoogoo fandom is really dry these days bcuz majority of their fans were teenage girls in the 80s who loved limahl, its great that theres still legit fans!

This was one of my favorites during the summer of '83. I was 14 at the time. I remember pretty well 'cause we used to play 'disco bar' in my friend's attic. Another favorite of mine that same summer was the B-side of Duran's 'Is there something I should know', called 'Faith in this color'. It's an instrumental track. Years later (like 10) I suspected the Stereo MC's of being inspired by its break, when they came up with 'Step it up'.....
This music video sums up eighties as an era: White pants, sport coat/tshirt combination with the sleeves rolled up, RayBan aviators and mullet blowing in the wind. Mobile phone the size of a brick.
Dismissed them at 8, respect them at 48. A band that was steered initially very well by Llahmal seemed to get lost by the 3rd album and its a shame in a way they couldnt get to enjoy the same success. But they did reunite eventuality and itvwas good to see them altogether again.I hope they do something this year for 40 year's, it would be a waste otherwise. Here's hoping
Had no idea Kenny Everett was in this video ! Brilliant. With groups like this, the singer is usually the best looking, but would say the keyboard player probably got a fair bit of fan mail at the time !
That's because music videos made the music industry and music buyers more image-conscious and naturally, entertainment companies were more strict in the looks of their talent.
Somebody should really remix this track into something else...the synth and bassline are crazy on this!. Okay some 80's bands might not have stood the test of time...but the constituent parts on this record are pretty worthy!. Oh and excellent casting of Kenny Everett...never expected him to crop up!.
They were their strongest together for sure. It’s difficult to say because the pop music scene was already changing by the time of the albums they did separately.
I believe so yes, he was responsible for Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody getting airplay in the UK since he was good freinds with Freddie Mercury so it may be a joke about how Kajagoogoo have paid him to play their single here.
Amusing video in the heyday of the awesome 80s limahls vocals stuarts synth combining with nick beggs killer bass playing great band that sounded and still does simply grand to hear

It’s muso mince. Talented musicians but it isn’t any good
So true 😂
💯!!! As we got older we now fully appreciate how great they were!
Stuart's synth parts and sounds on this song are superb. Very fine player.
Nick Beggs, bass master!

Y'know, I once asked the DJ in Greece (when on holidays there years ago) to do the same with the B52s Rock Lobster. GREAT!
This clip is so 80's even the 80's are jealous

Such a funky tune in parts, with such fine and apt, minor chord changes, especially, early on in the tune. Kajagoogo's best, in my opinion.
This is their best song!!
Yes 👍
No matter how old you are, if this doesn't do it for ya, nothing will.
I agree , great synth and slapwork on this one , the most danceable as well

They should never have got rid of Limahl things were never the same again great Band and music 💜
So why did they got rid of him anyway?
Allegedly he was a Egomaniac and was becoming difficult to work with
Im guessing drugs
It was a bad mistake!
The rest of Kaja wanted to be more professional and do more advance music whereas Limahl wanted to stay the same and keep making pop singles.
Although not a massive hit, this has to be the most-80s sounding & video I’ve see and heard !
I've got an deja Vu!
The bassline for this track is absolutely ridiculous. Nick Beggs is a beast!
Yeah, Nick Beggs and Mark King were the main guys who inspired a lot of people to start sticking out their thumbs and start slapping.
