Omg!!! So inspiring! Thanks for that! I’m 29 and have been a cleaner for 8 years. I clean family homes and am fighting my way to become a Physician Assistant. I’m still finishing up my ekg tech program and have paid for my bachelors on my cleaners salary! I’m pretty proud of what I do and where I got so far. I feed my two kids and with a careful budget I am able to finish my masters. So happy you posted this! ❤️

Videos like this are what separate you from the other RUclipsrs. You actually worked your way up the ladder. You're a hard worker and deserve all the success. When I was younger I used to clean bird poop from window ledges when I lived in a flat for pocket money. I've also worked as a waitress and (sadly) in Primark. They're awful but it's great work experience. I'm not feeling hopeful for jobs after university this June but I'm trying to keep the faith.

Sophie, I really enjoy these types of videos - career advice, how you've made success, sharing your journey etc. However .. the tripling salaries and double promotions dont just come about. I would LOVE to hear about HOW you made yourself indispensable to your place of work/ prospective employer because many of us struggle to know how to stand out/ move up the ladder.... and companies are becoming more competitive to be in (with tighter purses). Maybe you could share a list of actions/ attitudes / approaches you took? Thank you!!

some might call it luck but I think its also down to skills meeting opportunity at the right time but yet again perhaps Sophie has been incredibly lucky spotting and working for the right firms cos i know in most companies I've worked in, they're very reluctant to promote let alone tripple salary even when I've clearly been able to show my worth and how much I've brought into the business. They always had other ideas and would rather give the promotion to someonelse and I in turn take it as an opportunity to move on because I find i could double my salary in a new place even though it meant starting over which for me is result because my experience so far asking for raise in most places I've worked; they offer to add 1K or 2 more to your current wages which i find quite irritating and insulting but moving on always got me almost twice the salary i earned at the previous place or atleast 30% on previous earnings which again sounds much better than 1K :)))

MissWard20 what field do you work in? Maybe certain ones are more open to promotion/ pay rises than others? Glad to hear you found your own path and places that valued you as much as you value yourself!

    • @Uma.May1
      @Uma.May1 6 лет назад

Alecia Dunn thanks Alecia. I’m in the creative field too as Sophie but asking for promotion/pay rise just haven’t worked out the way I’d planned but still cos I get the pay rise somewhere else and I think Sophie covered this in another vid where she said something similar that she just moved on whenever she asked and they didn’t agree or give it to her. But in general think we all just have different experiences with promotions/payrise . Some stay in thesame position for over 5years no movement and I never got it xx

I think its humbling when we have jobs like this, Im nurse but I use to work in the laundry center in the hospital part time while going to school, the things you deal with especially dealing with the bloody or feces clothing from the patients, it really made me respect the housekeeping staff I see around the hospital because those jobs aren't easy and I appreciate anyone that is able to do the job that needs to be done.

I have my share of own stories and struggles. I just recently landed a job at LV for Product Developer and it is so good to hear all the comments negative and positive you have about all these luxury brands, hopefully some of the quality will start changing at LV to be match with the price tag. Would love to hear more of your professional stories as well as critics on luxury brands what not to buy and what to be aware of when thinking in investing in such expensive products.

Really inspiring. I did all kind of jobs while studying (cleaner, cooking demonstrator at houses, animator for elderly people and for adults with special need, procurement assistant, tutor...) and I finally finished my Master and a PhD in Science but can't find a job yet in my field. Meanwhile I need to eat so I am trying to go back to cleaner or technician jobs while applying for jobs in my filed but 1) employers do not want to recruit PhDs for jobs which according to them "do not require a higher education degree" 2) other employers in my field want you to have a PhD an few years experience after that, but no one wants to give you a chance to get that experience!

Great video @Sophie Shohet!! 😊 What you may find boring, we do indeed find fascinating!! I've always said it's ok to have a job that "just helps ends meet", because you never know what connections or people you may meet or work for that could serve to promote you, or work with you when you decide to branch off and self-establish!! So much of employment today, in this data age, is all about networking!! I'm glad you were able to work your way up the ladder... ambition & determination are priceless attributes to possess!! loved this video, watched it 2 times without realizing it, a while back and now. It's a perfect example of a concise, very informative and formative video!!! so kudos for this Sophie! It's what I loved about ur chanel the first time. I got 6 months ago the position of store manager, after 7 years hoping and wishing a growth. and even if I was happy about it, and feel proud, I still am not confident about what i'm doing, whenever there's new changes I start freaking out and having doubts and being really scared... and maybe it's a normal thing, as u said. I hope with more experience I will get more of that natural confidence and wisdom and feel more confident about my position.

I haven't even got 2 minutes in and you've hit the nail on the head. My desire and enjoyment of nicer things do not stem from envy. When I see someone like you all I think is "well done!" Great story and inspiration. I’ve pretty much got a similar story right now. I’m 24 and praise God, I’m earning ~35k. I always wanted to be on my age in regard to salary so I got out of uni at 21 and went onto a 21k job and each year I’d go up with my age. I recently beat everyone at interview for a senior position. I stayed loyal to my employer and was patient. I didn’t even qualify for the person specs but they liked my confidence and straightforwardness enough to offer me the job. Now I just want to keep working and striving for more. At uni I worked as a cleaner for the student union- waking up 5am to 10am every weekend. At the same time I was an emergency dispatcher. Some days I would finish my dispatcher job at 12 and go home to wake up at 5am for my other job. I learnt so much from the low level jobs and I’m grateful to God for giving me the opportunity.

It's about the tenacity and the journey of becoming a better version of yourself. This is quality content, I (among many others) are watching and learning. More please!

I agree, those bad jobs can really give you the motivation to do better in life. I remember working as a cashier and being treated really badly by customers for no reason and working at jobs where professionals thought they were better than us and would look down on us because we were just admin staff and whenever I felt put down like that, I would think "I need to study to get out of here and not have to put up with this people". I always knew I wanted to have a career, but these situations would propel me even more to study and work harder to get there. And I also think it grounds you so that when you are higher up, you don't mistreat people who are doing lower-end jobs because you know what it's like to be there and you appreciate your job even more because of the hard work you put into getting there.

Such a great video Sophie, every job is a learning experience! I'm actively looking to leave my company after ten years of employment because they really don't appreciate my hard work. I became comfortable and lost my drive, but it's back and I'm excited for my new career!

Love this video, Sophie. I’ve also worked in sales from the bottom and it led me to succeed in my own business. All those ruddy jobs do count! And as a fellow entrepreneur, definitely get the scary feeling in the beginning with the money coming in. Thanks for such a lovely video. Adds a nice touch to the luxury which is also incredibly fun to watch (as a fellow fashion and luxury lover who worked her way up!)

Love these , so refreshing to see dimension in a you tube video. I remember being told by a boss when I was young to ‘always find something to do, even if it’s just polishing the silverware again, never let the customer see you standing around doing nothing’. I never forgot that and to this day I always find work to do even though I am no longer a waitress and work in a science field. I notice all the time when staff either at work or elsewhere just stand around and it looks so bad.

Hi, Sophie, I discovered your channel with your luxury roast and it was so funny and got me watching more. Then I saw this video and thank you so much. It just gave me a big realization of how I became comfortable in my current job and I am staying because I like it and my colleagues but there's no more challenge. Being out of my comfort zone is where I want to be and keep on learning. Thank you for the reminder and the push like you say!

I love your stories. I used to be a cleaner, too. I work at a grocery store now. Cleaning is the worst. I used to clean for hoarders, too. I'm studying to be a GIS analyst, now. I hope I can get there soon, then be a consultant after graduating college someday. Cleaning and working in grocery taught me how to work with people, and work hard. Customer service is the worst because customers are not nice. They can be gross, rude, and creepy; however, I was able to learn how to deal with it. Great video. :)

This is a great story, I agree with you about the beginning jobs teaching you respect and a how they allow you to value what you do for a career later in life. I actually am going to share this video with my son who will be graduating hishschool this year. I tell him the same story from my own life experiences, but it helps when your kids hear of others besides the parents proclaiming the same thing :) Thank you! I especially love your outlook about not being envious of others for what they have, but using that want as a drive to make you work for something. Brilliant outlook! 💕 Love you and your channel.

OMG! hahaha, I'm currently working as a freelancer, quited as a customer service rep a month ago and starting to build my own Marketing Agency from scratch. Yeah a lot of people told me to not quit your job unless you have a solid gig online. But the stress on my previous work just drain all the energy that I have, that I don't have anything left in learning freelancing. And I have to agree big time on you can work anytime from home, but the scary part and also the challenging part is knowing that you don't have a fix monthly income. So glad I found your video Sophie. Btw, I love these type of videos. It just makes me more hungry to push myself on achieving my goals :) Thank you!

This is a breath of fresh air. I myself is in that space where Im ready to move up from where I am, only thing is I'm not sure where to go or how to get there! Im more of a creative person and where I live has little to no opportunity in the creative feel. I want to do something that Im passionate about but also something that can more than meet my bills.

Thank you for your honesty and really clear direction on what needs to be done if you want to be successful. On You Tube it can seem like it’s really easy to have the life you’ve always wanted without putting in the hard graft to get there or by getting the right level of education to support you in achieving your dreams. I also like that you encourage people to not be envious but instead be focused on how to get what you want rather than being negative about what other have. I think it’s a fantastically positive message. 👍

I'm new to the workforce in my first real entry level job in marketing and its motivating to hear you share about your career... Excellent advice. My first job was working in a paper shop. Most of the time I was in school I did waitressing over the school holidays, moving up to bar work while I was a student. It taught me that I didn't want to work in Hospitality, and it paid off my overdraft each year at the end of Uni terms. Having a good work ethic is the best grounding of all. Might be worth mentioning the long term pay and conditions. A job that has a good pension is also worth looking at.
