The basic idea is that unrealistic physics lets the bully produce kinetic energy when bumping into it. This is exploited to use the bully as a battery (or a capacitor?) to build up speed on Mario's behalf
That Bully just experienced something far beyond its comprehension. Being nearly killed, only to survive, being ran into for 21 hours straight, smearing across the volcano in some sort of Bully superposition, going thousands of times faster than it has ever gone, sending another being to a parallel universe by a monumental transfer of speed... My god. I have no idea HOW the HELL you did it, but this managed to be more impressive than Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5x A presses. Here I was thinking "ok new tech, he just saved a bully while it was in the lava, what is he doing with that" Little did I know that was very fast gonna turn into over 3.4 Million Mario Speed. For reference, that's a bit over a million meters per second, almost 3000 times the speed of sound or about 0.34% the speed of light. Jesus Christ.
@@poudink5791 yeah, at this point HMC 0.5x is like a mid tier strategy in terms of complexity and involvement. SA, almost everything in TTC, and some stuff in RR or WDW overshadow it. And I'm probably missing more.
This just boggles my mind on every level. I can't even begin to fathom the number of months it took to engineer this, let alone program and implement it in-game as efficiently as possible. This is some exceptional work, bravo!
This has been in the works for months and seeing it all come together into an over 24 hour tas is amazing. Great job to everyone involved and good luck on sott and fs
In this episode of ABC, Mario loses a deal with the devil and gets trapped into Hell. As a way to take out his frustration, he starts bullying the bullies for 21 hours until he realizes he can build speed with them to travel into Parallel Universes to steal the star and escape. Fun fact, the name of level actually hints at the solution. Mario uses the elevator to take a deTOUR into a parallel universe. Clearly this was intended by the devs.
Wow. This is amazing. The visual of moving so far across PUs so quickly that you can visibly see Mario moving across the map and falling to land on a platform in the relative view is a sight to behold.
If anyone ever asks: "why is math so important anyway?" I'll show them this. The fact that people spend their free time to figure out all of this crazy multidimensional stuff just so they can save an A press or two is insane to me. We're still finding out new things about this 26 year old game TO THIS DAY, when technology has long since progressed past games like this. We can even emulate this game through a webpage with how far we came. So even if you won't need to learn math all like this to do something amazing like this, you can't deny how cool it all is to see
I remember seeing one of your videos from 6 years ago saying elevator tour couldn’t be done even with infinite lava boosts. So seeing this so many years later makes me happy.
With every new A press video, there is so much living tension in knowing that _something_ insane is about to happen, but not knowing what, how or when it'll happen
The only word I think describes what I just watched would be "arcane"... I have no understanding of what I just witnessed, or of why you did it the way you did. But it worked. I don't think the word "impressed" adequately describes my attitude to this. Complete and utter befuddlement is all I have experienced. Great stuff!
With little regard of the exact context of this video, I decided to go in and watch the whole thing in full screen, observing it as if it were an artwork. Watching Mario running around in circles or just standing still to shift around levitating Bullies was a peculiar experience. Once the good ole quadrants showing the cameras and maps came in, I knew that they pay-off was approaching, and it was quite satisfying! I also quite appreciate the humor in the early sped-up segment, given its inclusion of dramatic music over imagery of Mario running around over many hours while various graphs giving context to what is happening go over the screen.
Absolutely nuts!!!!! Insane how much went into this strategy. Thrilled to see it bring the A count down so soon after the last ones. The brute forcer bit was also quite funny
*WE DID IT?!* I thought this was going to be one of those impossible ones that would likely never be done à la Winged Mario Over the Rainbow, but here we are! The number grows smaller! It seems like the source code leak has helped us a lot.
The leak wasn't helpful at all. The SM64 decomp was already complete by the time the leak happened and I believe the bully battery strat was being talked about even before that.
Another A press save! It's really unbelievable how far can this game go in terms of crazy setups and hidden/unintended techs, hope to see that A press count reaching 0 sometime soon!
I came in expecting to be completely bewildered, but this was utter insanity. Just when you think, "wow, that was the most complicated and genius improvement yet!" there's another marvel of pure dedication that somehow tops the previous one. Fire Sea is next guys! The pole will once and for all be conquered!
Reading the description is like following along an article in a scientific journal abstract. The amount of jargon, the procedural steps, and the conclusion all have such a charming and familiar tone to them considering I have no idea what any of it means.
amazing. everytime someone dares to think an a press cant be saved, a new strat comes up and lowers the number. i think i subscribed when the A press count was around 23 or 26. i thought i was looking at a finished project. but here we are.
Kudos for a comprehensive credits list for how this entire effort was put together. I like knowing that the ideas that give birth to these insanities are traceable at least to some extent, rather than handwaving the issue away with "The community came up with [this and that and those]"
These community efforts genuinely give me hope and inspiration for humanity. And thank you for the edits Pannen, unnecessary but made this even more enjoyable :)

At this point, getting burned by lava is a suggestion, bullies are questioning their existence, and you can cross thousands of PUs just by running into a bully for 1.5 days
Life advice: If a bully bullies you, just kill it and play with its still dying corpse for nearly a full day to give it enough internal potential energy to launch it into a parallel universe, but only such that it doesn't travel to a parallel universe, then use its potential energy to add to your own so you can go to a parallel universe, such that you do travel to a parallel universe, so you can use an elevator platform to teleport to your dream life so you can rub it in that dumb bully's face and say "I told you I could do it!" and make your dreams come true!
“Oh wow! I wonder how Pannen saves this A-press?” “Today we’re going to split a Bully between the planes of life and death and build dimension-tearing speed off its ruptured astral projection for 21 hours, until neither the laws of physics nor the laws of any divine can catch up with Mario.” I watch your career with great interest. Congrats on the A-press save!

I was initially going to say "I love the cute bully icon on the HUD, what a great touch!", only to be blown out of the water by the montage. Very cool, love that presentation!
The bully icon is awesome. Great work all around!
@@novarender_ agree!
editing made me actually laugh out loud. great stuff yet again from the community!
I laughed like a maniac. Felt pretty appropriate too.
what. WHAT.
the level of insanity we're reaching, man. this is what i takes to save the final A-Presses.
15 to go. very good luck to you and your team.
Well, all the easy ones are done (probably), it's all uphill from here. :P
I laughed for half a minute straight when "O Fortuna" started. You guys rock.
I liked that too!
My god. I have no idea HOW the HELL you did it, but this managed to be more impressive than Watch for Rolling Rocks in 0.5x A presses. Here I was thinking "ok new tech, he just saved a bully while it was in the lava, what is he doing with that"
Little did I know that was very fast gonna turn into over 3.4 Million Mario Speed. For reference, that's a bit over a million meters per second, almost 3000 times the speed of sound or about 0.34% the speed of light.
Jesus Christ.
Mario went nearly 1000 PUs
Relativistic Mario
@@Your_choise That does put things into perspective
More impressive than HMC 0.5? Thats underselling it.
@@poudink5791 yeah, at this point HMC 0.5x is like a mid tier strategy in terms of complexity and involvement. SA, almost everything in TTC, and some stuff in RR or WDW overshadow it. And I'm probably missing more.
In literally all the years I’ve watched this challenge progress, this one takes the cake for the most absurd sequence I’ve ever seen.
did u watch the recent TTC videos? they are way crazier
@@Rmac524 are there more besides the ones from a month ago?
This is a pretty good rival to Watch For Rolling Rocks
And then the geniuses made a new TTC video that's crazier still
This just boggles my mind on every level. I can't even begin to fathom the number of months it took to engineer this, let alone program and implement it in-game as efficiently as possible. This is some exceptional work, bravo!
Pannenkoek is a multidimensional being who can comprehend more than god himself
This has been in the works for months and seeing it all come together into an over 24 hour tas is amazing. Great job to everyone involved and good luck on sott and fs

In this episode of ABC, Mario loses a deal with the devil and gets trapped into Hell. As a way to take out his frustration, he starts bullying the bullies for 21 hours until he realizes he can build speed with them to travel into Parallel Universes to steal the star and escape. Fun fact, the name of level actually hints at the solution. Mario uses the elevator to take a deTOUR into a parallel universe. Clearly this was intended by the devs.
"Clearly this was intended by the devs"
@@xRockLobster75x "Clearly this was intended by the devs"
Let's make this a meme
@@xRockLobster75x "it's not a bug, it's a feature!"
So even if you won't need to learn math all like this to do something amazing like this, you can't deny how cool it all is to see
True
Coming here just after this star was solved in 1 minute
You know it's gonna get good when the Parallel Universe map pulls up
Nice job everyone involved, this is some truly insane stuff!
Watching this feels like watching a toddler struggling to put the cube in the circle hole but I'm the idiot.
Another day, another A press defeated
Congrats marbler and pannen and everyone else! You did an amazing job with this. Again.
The saving of A presses is always a treat to view, even if it doesn't occur often. Amazing work!
I love that a video that starts with a brute forcer set to O FORTUNA is what made my day.
I've never been a part of this community, but I love seeing what y'all have been up to. Every time a new a-press is deleted, it's a huge win.
Mario: Hmm, today I will accelerate a Bully past the speed of light so I don't have to jump.
This was needlessly dramatic and I love it so much. Congrats to everyone involved.
@@poudink5791 Oh. Interesting.
I haven't been this mind melted in a long time. Here's hoping that a certain other lava level gets solved soon.
Another A press save! It's really unbelievable how far can this game go in terms of crazy setups and hidden/unintended techs, hope to see that A press count reaching 0 sometime soon!
I love how pannen just disappears and then suddenly comes back stronger than ever
Wow, and I thought certain other A button saves got quite complicated. It's amazing how this one even managed to get figured out and executed.
I find it hilarious that the real answer was not to make Mario build speed. But to have a bully build up speed for 20 hours
I have no idea what you’re doing, but you, sir, are a mad man. Have an upvote!
This is where hard mode begins, we have to TAS the TAS to figure out these new saves.
I came in expecting to be completely bewildered, but this was utter insanity. Just when you think, "wow, that was the most complicated and genius improvement yet!" there's another marvel of pure dedication that somehow tops the previous one.
Fire Sea is next guys! The pole will once and for all be conquered!
Eventually, the bully stopped thinking.
I like knowing that the ideas that give birth to these insanities are traceable at least to some extent, rather than handwaving the issue away with "The community came up with [this and that and those]"
You know it's getting real when the PU grid is in the hundreds.
My head has never hurt as much as it did reading and comprehending the description. All of you are legends, abc team

I don't think this is what the devs had in mind when they named a star 'Bully the Bullies'
This is incredible. The complexity makes N64 Secret Aquarium look like a first grade quiz.
And the tick tock clock recent save also makes this seem easy
Remember when watch for rolling rocks 0.5xA was first done and it seemed overly complicated? That was barely 6 years ago
This is so amazing and impressive
Really makes me wonder just how long the entire A button Challenge speedrun would actually take
About 40 hours for 2 stars. Still not even close to as ridiculous as SM64DS's equivalent though.
The full 120 star run is currently estimated to take 58 hours. Pannen has a spreadsheet linked in the description.
@@Splax77 that's for the current 120 star strat that still has A presses currently though. The subvariant of 70 star 0xA still takes longer than that, just because of waiting for a floating platform. :P (though I imagine they'll likely find a faster solution to that soon with the new tech they're playing with)
Excuse me?! It amazes me how this challenge is still going strong! Also nice editing.
Even though there are far more pressing things to be interested by, I've never noticed that the lava texture in the volcano slowly spins.
My favourite part about this is how he still flexes and does party tricks on the elevator in the middle of this insanity
That Bully was tortured for more than a full day just so Jumpman didn’t have to jump. What a hero.
When it's your turn on the N64 but your brother says "just one more star"
My brain hurts.
I knew the 3x speed outa a bully was a thing, but my brain just melted trying to figure out how ot drifts across the map that way.
Also that python scirpt montage at the start was hilarious.
It looks like Bullies are the new key to the multiverse.
I’m so glad you’re still making these videos. I forget about videos like this until they suddenly come up. But honestly, I’m glad they’re still being made. Mario 64 tricks are super cool.

the editing on the brute forced slow bully battery is incredible and hilarious, i love it
Great job to everyone who contributed to this!
Good lord, I get impatient when a program takes 10 minutes to finish... You waited a WEEK on a program to finish?! You are all incredible beings, congrats to everyone involved in chopping off another A in Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaario 64!
Woah, didn't see this coming! Happy to see another improvement
At this point, getting burned by lava is a suggestion, bullies are questioning their existence, and you can cross thousands of PUs just by running into a bully for 1.5 days
It's all fun and games until O Fortuna starts playing. From that moment on where are no longer watching a TAS, but watching art.
I really shouldn't be surprised. But I am! How does it keep getting more crazy!?
Truly outstanding stuff!
POV: Mario sends a bully to hell before getting bored and picking up the star
“Oh wow! I wonder how Pannen saves this A-press?”
“Today we’re going to split a Bully between the planes of life and death and build dimension-tearing speed off its ruptured astral projection for 21 hours, until neither the laws of physics nor the laws of any divine can catch up with Mario.”
I watch your career with great interest. Congrats on the A-press save!
TerminalMontage's Speed Demon has never been more accurate
I applaud you and your seven contributors for what has to be the most creative strategy in the history of Mario 64. This was wild and definitely deserving of O Fortuna.
Nice this is pretty cool but my little brother discovered this on accident when we rented the game back in 1998. Glad to see someone managed to record it though.
