Is the Supair BIRDY "super-high A" paraglider really an "A" wing? 🤔

  • Fitting between the EONA 3, EIKO 2 and LEAF 2 / LEAF 2 LIGHT, the semi-light BIRDY is the 'Swiss Army Knife' of the Supair paraglider range. 🪂
    Flybubble's Nancy and Carlo got to test fly the new "super-high A" paraglider from Supair, the BIRDY, during the first-ever Supair Pro Seminar, held in Le Grand-Bornand in the French Alps in March 2022. Launching on the snow at 2000m ASL, they flew the BIRDY in good thermic conditions, with nice altitude gains. Taking advantage of having plenty of height, Carlo put the wing through its paces a bit doing some SIV manoeuvres with it as well.
    What do you think - Is the Supair BIRDY a "high A" or a "hot A" paraglider? 🤔😏

    Since we first tested the Birdy in France, Nancy and I have tested it lots more back in the UK and got to know it well. Each time we've flown the Birdy we've been impressed with how well behaved it is, on the ground and in the air, and how much we enjoyed flying it. The launch behaviour is excellent in all wind conditions. In the air the feeling and handling are reassuring yet fun. The performance (glide, speed, sink rate, climbing ability) is excellent, more like a low to mid B wing. When pilots asked us what level of wing we were flying, they were amazed to find out it was an A, because they could see it was clearly performing so well compared to higher rated, less safe wings.

      Nice video review and here... Thx, as someone hoping to complete their CP soon I have been looking into 'first' wings... This one has caught my eye due to the alleged scope for progression on the one wing... Should I assume then from your reviews that you recommend this wing for beginners as their first wing?

    Hi Nancy & Carlo, In what scenario could you stall the glider except landing, toplanding, launch abort?

    • @flybubblecarlo
      @flybubblecarlo 2 года назад +1

      Hi airgabor para. Great question! 👍 There are many scenarios where the pilot could accidentally stall the wing e.g. whilst soaring or thermalling, when avoiding others or the terrain, flying in turbulence, strong wind gradient/shear, flying in rain, wing wet or out of trim, knot in the lines, twisted riser... . Stalls and spins (asymmetric stalls) are actually one of the most common reasons for incidents and accidents in free flight. Often the pilot doesn't realise they have stalled or spun the wing, even if highly experienced. Paraglider pilots tend to think they had a collapse, and that this was what caused them to have an incident/accident. Sometimes they had a collapse which shouldn't have been a big problem (with correct pilot reaction) but then they over-brake and stall or spin the wing, leading to much bigger problems. We have various articles (some with related videos) in the Flight Skills
      section of our Flybubble Knowledge Base: flybubble.com/knowledge-base

      @TheGrundigg 2 года назад +1

      If you are asking about stalling on purpose there are also scenarios where you would do such a thing. You can use a stall to reset a misbehaving glider or to enter backfly which can resolve some cravates. Those are high level manouvers which you would learn in an SIV course. They are important to know on higher level gliders or if you are planning to fly acro.

      @flybubbleparagliding  Год назад

      Hi Paul. We plan to publish a combined review of the Nova Aonic and Aonic Light as soon as we can, if everything works out, can't promise or say when. We've already tested the Aonic a good amount, so know it well, just not had time to create a review of it. 🪂🤓

    • @flybubbleparagliding
      @flybubbleparagliding  Год назад

      ps. Much as we'd like to, we don't have the resources to publish free video reviews of all products we test. To give an idea, there are currently 185 wing models and 87 harness models from the brands we deal with - and that doesn't take into account all of the sizes! We do plan to publish more freeflight gear reviews going forwards, if resources allow. The fact is, this mainly comes down to more pilots choosing to support us and order their shiny new wings and harnesses from us! 🪂💺🙂

    Who is going to fly an EN-A glider with a pod harnass though? Seems like an unlikely combination for a potential customer.

    • @flybubblecarlo
      @flybubblecarlo 2 года назад +2

      Good question Rob! Which begs the question: Why not choose to fly an EN-A wing with a pod harness? Why choose fly an EN/LTF A wing, rather than a higher rated wing - what are the real pros and cons? Why choose to fly a pod harness, rather than an open harness - what are the real pros and cons?
